Albums disappear in iPhoto 5.0.4

I'm running 10.4.2 & iPhoto 5.0.4
Today, when I opened up iPhoto all my pictures were there, but no albums. Does anyone have any ideas how I might get them back?
Thanks,
Ben

Hi Ben,
I have read of others having this happen to them. Unfortunately, I have no read of any solutions. The album information is stored in the iPhoto.db file (I think).
this file must have got corrupted somehow.
all I can offer is to redo the albums and hope it doesn't happen again. I wish I could tell you more.
You can try rebuilding the library, but I don't think that will help.
If you can, work on a duplicate of the iPhoto Library.
To rebuild, hold down the command and Option keys while launching iPhoto and choose all the options except the "orphaned photos" one.

  • Photos and photo albums disappeared, but iPhoto library still has 60 GB.

Photos and photo albums disappeared, web gallery titles remain but show (0). iPhoto library still has 60 GB size. How do I retrieve photos, events and albums. Thanks in advance.

Are you getting an "!" in the window when you try to edit a photo. The "!" means that the library has lost the file path to the original file. This happens when there has been an interruption to iPhoto while it is writing to it's database file, Library6.iPhoto. Moving, renaming files or folder inside the library package while in the Finder is another way you can get that indication. Try the three fixes below in order as needed:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the first three options.
2 - rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: It may take some time to create the new library if you have a lot of photos. Report back on how long it took and how many photos you have in the library so we can give other users an idea of how long it may take.
3 - start over with a new library and import the Originals folder from your original library as follows:
Creating a new library while preserving the Events from the original library.
Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
Open the library package like this.
Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library if you have the Finder checkbox unchecked in the Events preference pane.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Photo album disappears from iphoto

My two most recent albums keep disappearing from iPhoto, and thus from my iPad and iPhone.  I've repaired permissions and the iPhoto database, but no joy.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Remember: we cannot see your machine. There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 8 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS.  So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Basic things like :
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For instance: 'iPhoto won't export' is best explained by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

  • Albums /photos "disappear" from Iphoto 08

    Hello
I used Iphoto 08 for many years.
Recently I need to send some photos taken in 2004/2005 to some friends.
Unfortunately, I notice that some albums "disappear" from Iphoto 08.
I don't think I have deleted them by accident or whatsoever .
So, what is the cause and is there any way of "recuperating" these albums ?
Many thanks for your advice, help !
    MY gene

    James:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. What exactly are you referring to by the "burn folder" feature on Tiger? Did you create a folder on the desktop and then move the iPhoto Library folder from the Pictures folder into the one on the desktop? If that's what you did and then deleted that folder from the desktop you have deleted all of your photos. The iPhoto Library folder that you now see in the Pictures folder was created when you launched iPhoto the next time and it will be empty.
If you haven't used you computer much since then you may be able to undelete those photos with Data Rescue or SubRoas File Salvage. Use you're computer as little as possible until you've had a chance to run one of these applications.
Hope this has been of some help. Good luck.

  • Web gallery albums disappear

The problem: An album in iphoto web gallery has just disappeared from my iphoto program. I created a replacement album in web gallery but now when I go to my web gallery I see the old one and the new one. I cannot delete the old one as it does not show on my dot mac account and in iphoto. How do I delete the old one? Why do these albums disappear from iphoto in the first place.

How do I delete the old one?
THis is the easy qustion - go to your iDisk and delete the gallery -- finder ==> iDisk ==> web ==> sites ==> _gallery
Why do these albums disappear from iphoto in the first place.
    That is the hard question.
First be sure you are using the latest version of iphoto - 7.1.3
Second be careful not to make changes to the gallery while it is updating (this should NOT be a problem but appears to sometimes cause problems)
Third report to Apple -- iPhoto menu ==> provide iPhoto feedback
Because of this issue (although have not experienced it myself) I suggest creating standard albums for all galleries and doing all of your changes before creating the gallery - this avoids some problems and gives you a back up in case you need to regenerate the gallery due to a problem

  • Photos in iPhoto 11 albums disappeared...

    Hey all!
I recently had pictures from an old drive recovered. I was given the iphoto library folder but I had built a new library with new pictures since. I used iPhoto Library Manager to merge both libraries and it worked fine until recently, all the pictures from the albums disappeared. They are all in the photos and events but all the albums are empty. I tried repairing iPhoto but it didn't work. Any suggestions anyone? Thanks in advance for the help!

I tried that Terence and it doesn't work... I really don't want to go through 35,000 pictures one by one...

I created an album on the iPhone but when sync'ed to the mac, the album disappears.  Is there a way to share albums created in iphoto on the iphone with the iphoto on the mac?

Is there a way to share albums created in iphoto on the iphone with the iphoto on the mac?
No, there is not yet a way to do that. Albums created on the iPhone cannot be synced back to the mac.
You might try other ways to send photos back to the mac in a structured way, depending on your IOS version:
You could use Journals instead of albums. If you share a Journal, you can see it on your Mac.  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH3152
Or create shared photo streams.  iCloud: Using and troubleshooting Shared Photo Streams

  • IPhoto 9.5.1 Album disappearance.

    iPhoto 9.5.1 Album disappearance.
After updating an album of my most cherished pics from the last 15 years of family and friends, I attempted to drag and place it onto the iPhone icon under the heading "DEVICES" (iPhone was plugged into computer and visible in iPhoto) I have added photos to my iPhone from iPhoto in the past without incident. However this time the photos did not go onto the iphone. the album vanished. I did a secondary test with a small, easily reproducable album and when I dragged the album to the iPhone icon, a line with a circle appeared both below the icon and also above the iPhone icon (still within the DEVICE headed-section). Dragging and dropping the second "test" album more slowly, it appeared to have gone into that space above or below the iPhone icon without appearing anywhere. The original album (all I care about) was called "keepers on iPhone" and I have been building it for several years and had yet to put it on this newer phone I now have.
any idea how I can locate it? search for it? It would be painstakingly laborious to try to recreate it to get it close to the original file.

Thank you Terence. I am sure you are correct. I have a question though. When I looked into iPhoto Trash, there were many photo albums I had deleted over the last several weeks that were still visible in the trash, as I has not "emptied the trash" So wouldn't these 2 albums be in the trash also? if iPhoto thought I was deleting them, wouldnt they be with the other albums.
Can I see iPhoto albums in iTunes and drag them onto my iPhone there?

  • Pictures in iWeb albums disappeared after change location of original files

I created many albums in iWeb by dragging albums from iPhoto. But then I noticed some pictures from my iWeb albums disappeared after the original pictures got removed to another location (or deleted). How can I tell iWeb to make a copy of the pictures in iWeb itself so my iWeb albums can stay the same even when i need to reorganize the original files on the hard drive?
Any suggestions on how to restoring my albums in iWeb? I am having a bit headache now. Thank you very much!

That is not normal behavior. The photos should stay in iWeb even if you delete them from iPhoto. Are you running a "referenced" library or a "managed" one?
Managed is the default option. If you're running a reference library that may be the reason. If so contact Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iweb.html and http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html.
Unless you have a backup of your domain file predating the loss of the photos I don't know how you will recover the photos.

  • My photos have disappeared from iPhoto 11

My hard drive was replaced at the beginning of this year by apple because of the possibility of premature failure. Just before Christmas 2013, i discovered my iPhoto was blank. sometime in January, the photos all reappeared but as of yesterday, they have once again disappeared from iPhoto. The pictures are still on the harddrive as they can be seen using Finder but are no longer grouped by albums. Also, they are locked in Finder. The iMac is running OSX 10.7.5 and the iPhoto version is 9.4.3.
I would like my photos back in iPhoto and would like them to be reliably there when i go to view them. Any suggestions? Apple Support advised me they had never heard of this happening.

  • All new albums disappear

Every time I create a new album, close down iPhoto and then return to the program, the album will have disappeared. What to do?

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • My images have disappeared in iPhoto

    10.9.5/imac/2.7 GHz/8GB memory
Over 3/4 of my images have disappeared from iPhoto. Have been through all the usual iPhoto repair methods but absolutely nothing.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Albums folder in iPhoto Library folder missing

The Albums folder in iPhoto Library folder missing. This means when I try to sync photos to my iPod (video) in iTunes, none of my photo albums show up (though I can seclect a specific folder useing year, month day, etc.). It also mens that I must navagate through the date folders to find photos when trying to attach them to e-mails.
I am running a G5 with the latest version of OSX, iPhoto, iTunes.
How do I recreat this folder?
    Thankd for any help.
    Cheers__ Heath

    Hi Heath,
iPhoto 5 now stores the Album information in a data xml file. The Albums folder within the iPhoto Library folder is no longer used. At some point, usually after a rebuild, you will no longer have that folder in the Finder.
If you need to access photos from an album it is very difficult for a third party application to navigate the iPhoto Library in order to find the photo you need. You will have to know the date of import in order to find the photo.
There are some third party applications that can read the xml file and can navigate the iPhoto library and show you the Albums. Hopefully more applications will be revised to read this file.
Until then you will have to Share/Export the photos to the desktop. You can then navigate to the desktop to use the photos (example: web uploading from online photo site)
If your application supports drag and drop, you can drag the photo from an open iPhoto Library window into your application.
For email you can also use the email icon within iPhoto to open a message with the highlighted photo attached.
You can also use spotlight to find images in an Album...
This is what I have done using Spotlight to find my images that are in iPhoto albums without opening iPhoto..
In iPhoto, select the album, then select all, go to Photos/batch change.
Change the comments to text. In the text field I put the name of the Album.
    Do this for each album.
    Close iPhoto.
Open Spotlight and put in the name of the Album ( you have to remember the names of the albums or have then written down)
In the spotlight search results. click on "show all"
Under "Images" click on the "xx more" to show all the images in the album.
Make sure you have it in icon view, the icon view box is the last one on the blue images line.
Now you can control click on the image to "reveal in finder", open in iPhoto or Mail, etc.
I am not sure if this is going to make you happy and it is a little more work, but you can find images in albums and even view them in a slideshow (by clicking the play arrow at the end of the Images highlighted blue line) using Spotlight, all without opening iPhoto.
One important thing to know is you can set up a graphic program to be an external editor (when you double click an image in the library} such as PhotoShop or PS Elements. You set up that within iPhoto Preferences. Just make sure you save the image flattened and with the same name. The edits will then be relected in iPhoto when you hit "save".
Two Apple kbs for you to read
Don't tamper with files in the iPhoto library folder
    About the iPhoto Library folder
Also, when you choose a folder to sync for your iPod, choose iPhoto in the drop down menu in iTunes, then choose the Album you want to sync. Do not choose a folder on your hard drive and then the Albums folder in the iPhoto Library folder.

  • HT5129 I already have the pictures in those albums on my iPhoto and want to just get rid of MobileMe gallery.  What to do?

How do I NOT migrate existing albums to my iPhoto library?
I just want to get rid of Mobile Me Gallery?

iCloud is not available in Snow Leopard 10.6.x. You need OS X Lion or Mt Lion to gain access to iCloud.

  • Option to "Move Album Out Of iPhoto Events" not showing

I've read that other Photos users, when right clicking (or Control + click) on one of the imported iPhotos Events albums, see an option in the contextual menu to "Move Album Out Of iPhoto Events". I am not seeing this option, only "Play slideshow", or Rename/duplicate/delete Album, or Sort By Name.
Anyone seen this and/or know how to resolve this? Thanks.

OK, thanks Leonie... unfortunately I can't do them in a batch though, I have about 300 of these!
An example of somebody who is able to do it in a batch is in here: Convert iPhoto Events to Photos Albums

Re: Convert iPhoto Events to Photos Albumsin response to Kevin Hawkins
I had the same problem. There is a quick and easy fix. Go to My Albums section and then go into the album "iPhoto Events" and then hit Command + A (Select All) that will highlight all the events. Then right click and click on move events out of "iPhoto Events". Once you do this, all your events will be individual albums listed in the album section.
.. so why am I unable to do that?
