Albums gone from iphoto

I recently backed up everything to a USB flashdrive. Went to iphoto today (icon on desktop), no albums(600 pictures)
Found them on hard drive: (user name)-Documents-Pictures-iPhoto Library-Albums.
I could move a single jpeg onto iPhoto page.
I tried moving one of the albums folders into iPhoto open page, (got a green plus sign) but got an error message "couldn't create --etc." for each of the 30 jpegs.
What should I do? I need very explicit directions.

Nothing happens when I hold shift and option key while double clicking on iPhoto. I had imported one jpeg from within Picture folder to iPhoto..so application is working. BUT,
When I find my lost ipegs a picture opens in Preview. I can't move it to iPhoto. Message is Could not be imported (they may be an unrecognizible file type,...etc.
It is possible I moved the Picture folder when trying to condense and clean up stuff. So perhaps this is too complicated to solve this way. ??
Is there a way to tell me where the iPhoto Library should be?
I have 2, one in /my name/Documents/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Albums (these open in Preview)
The other in/my name/Pictures/iPhoto Library (aliases)
At this point I would be glad to be able to import from Preview format to iPhoto.
Thanks, Sr Citz

I already tried the hold down option command key and rebuild, didn't work
    HELP PLEASE
no I do not have a bckup

What size if the Library as indicated in the Finder?  If it's large enough to be holding your photos then your photos are probably still in there but the library is damaged.  If the tags you used indicate iLife 11 then try the following:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button,
navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.
If the above falils to recover your photos continue with this:
Starting over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1. Open the library package like this.
    2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    3. Drag the subfolders of the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window a few at a time.
This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
Note:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • Pictures are gone from iPhoto

All of my pictures seem to be gone from iPhoto. I can see them as an icon when go to "open" in PhotoShop, but iPhoto has nothing in its library.

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

Does anyone know how to add photos taken in iOS 8 to albums migrated from iPhoto, or do I have to set up another set of albums?

Anyone know why the "Make Picasa Web Albums tags from iPhoto keywords" option does not seem to work? I expected to see the keywords I added to my photo in iPhoto also in Picasa on the web after they have been uploaded.
Downloaded and installed "Picasa Web Albums Uploader" version 1.3.1.680 from Google. Then from within iPhoto did a File > Export. The above option is shown on the "Picasa Web Albums" tab. I am using iPhoto 09.
Thank you very much for your help.

  • Help! All pictures gone from iPhoto!

I opened iPhoto today and it said zero pictures... none, all gone! I did some hunting around, after catching my breath, and found a bunch of the numbered folders with pictures in them through the my "pictures" in the finder... but iPhoto will not show any. They were all there yesterday when I shutdown and first thing today... gone from the liblary, along with all my folders that they were orginized into! All I can do is open then one at a time now and that's no fun. Any ideas as to what is up????
    PowerMac G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi artboy,
You can try launching iPhoto with the Option key held down and choose to open another library. Navigate to your library, highlight it and click "open" Hopefully it will open your library.
When you launch iPhoto holding down the Option key this is the window you will get.
Create a new library or choose a library to open
Choose to create a new library if that is what you want to do, or choose a library to open by clicking the "choose" button.
If you click the "create library" iPhoto will open with a brand new library for you to import images to. If you click "choose" then you will get this window.
    Open library
Navigate to where the library is on your computer, highlight it, then clcik the "open" button.
If it doesn't open or still shows no photos you might have to create a new library and import the photos from the old.
    Close iPhoto
Rename your messed up iPhoto Library to "iPhoto Library_old"
Drag this library to your desktop
Hold down the Option key and launch iPhoto
This is the window you will get
Create a new library or choose a library to open
Choose to create a new library
Once this new empty library is open it is time to import the images from your old library
    Go to File>add to library
Navigate to the old library on your desktop and highlight it in the window, then click the "open" button.
iPhoto will start importing the images from your old library
    This is what to expect:
Your images will be imported in nice dated rolls. (make sure your view is set to sort by rolls to see it) There are a couple of caveats to this. You will get rolls named "Originals" These rolls will contain your video clips and your original images that you had edited. If you had RAW files they would be in those rolls too (I don't do RAW, so I don't know for sure) Delete what you don't want from those rolls. You will also get the jpeg pointer files to your video clips imported. They will just be jpegs and will not point to the video clips anymore as iPhoto made new ones when the clips were imported again. You can delete those. they should be in a roll right next to the newly imported video clips so they are not hard to find. The thumbnail files don't get imported as iPhoto makes new ones when the images are imported.
Once all you images have been imported, check through the library and make sure everything looks ok.
You can now start making your Albums, and do your keywords or any other organizational steps.
You can also delete the old library on the desktop.
It is also a good time to backup this new library to CD/DVD by burning the iPhoto LIbrary folder in the Finder, or copying the iPhoto Library folder to an external drive formatted for Macs, or copying the iPhoto LIbrary folder to an iPod.
    Good luck!
If you have a recent backup of the entire iPhoto Library folder then drag the old iPhoto Library folder to the desktop and rename it iPhoto Library_old. Drag the backup iPhoto Library folder (make sure it is named iPhoto Library)
into the Pictures folder and launch iPhoto.

  • Photo album disappears from iphoto

My two most recent albums keep disappearing from iPhoto, and thus from my iPad and iPhone.  I've repaired permissions and the iPhoto database, but no joy.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Remember: we cannot see your machine. There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 8 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS.  So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Basic things like :
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For instance: 'iPhoto won't export' is best explained by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

  • N-Up Printing Gone from iPhoto '08

I sure hope Apple brings this feature back but "N-Up" printing has been removed from iPhoto '08. It's a feature we used almost exclusively when printing from previous versions. I was able to tweak the size of the prints to get 16 on a page (we print on 13x19 paper) but when you use a custom size, the photos don't correctly size and definitely do not orient themselves correct (Portrait vs Landscape.)
I see this as a significant feature omission and I hope Apple adds it back in a maintenance release very soon.
    DM

This Apple support page for iPhoto 7 indicates that the contact sheet can be customized in a similar way to N-up:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iPhoto/7.0/en/6438.html
But the words "In edit print project view, drag the Columns slider to increase or decrease the number of columns" do not make any sense to me. There is no column slider available. I would like to print the contact sheet as 2 columns but there is no way I can find to do this.
I did find that the Settings button allows me to delete the file names from the contact sheet (or add dates, which is more useful for my purposes).

  • All events and albums are gone from iPhoto

My library is still in the same location and still 540GB big, but when I open it there is nothing in iPhoto.

My library is still in the same location and still 540GB big, but when I open it there is nothing in iPhoto.
What has changed?  Did you just update or upgrade iPhoto to the new version 9.6, to be compatible with Yosemite?
Is iPhoto opening the correct library? Ctrl-click the word "iPhoto" in the title bar of the main iPhoto window. The drop-down menu will show you, which iPhoto library is currently open.
If the correct library is open, but looking empty, select the iPhoto Library in the Finder and look inside by ctrl-clicking it and using the command "Show Package Contents". Are there photos in the folder "Masters", or is there a folder "Old Masters"?

  • All of my pictures are gone from iPhoto after installing Yosemite..how do i get them back?

I have tried everything to get my pictures back after installing Yosemite on my laptop. Are they gone? Or is there a way to retrieve them?

Define "everything" because if you've tried everything then your last recourse is:
1 - restore your backup copy of your iPhoto Library created just prior to your Yosemite upgrade or
2 - Starting over from scratch with new library

  • Pictures gone from iPhoto 08

All of my pictures are gone. The info about each picture remains but the pictures themselves have disappeared. When I open iPhoto, it says it's rebuilding the thumbnail cache but nothing happens. I've tried rebuilding manually, nothing happens. Interestingly, a few of my pictures now reside on my husband's iPhoto site - they weren't put there by us! But it's only a few.
I'm a newbie, so keep your explanations simple!
    thanks

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Anything I should be paying attention to?
I suggest you backup the database file for the iPhoto Library, Library6.iPhoto, frequently. By that I mean after every import or after any organizational work performed in the library, i.e working on slideshows, books, creating new albums, etc. See the tip at the end of my signature below for a way to do that very easily, as easy as using the Save command (Command+S) in other applications.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Newly downloaded pix GONE from iPhoto (4.03)

Yesterday I downloaded a new set of very significant photos into iPhoto. I viewed them and massaged some of them before quitting for the night. I've been having a few unusual problems with iPhoto, and it choked and crashed a couple of times last night (sent Apple a crash report) - all very worrying signs. But when I did quit, all of the photos were still on display in iPhoto.
Today, none of the new photos are there and even some from last weekend have disappeared! I've just checked the iPhoto library and there is no 2007 folder, so I can only assume they are really GONE.
I have a nightly automatic backup to an external hard disk, but a search of both internal and external hard drives has found none of my jpeg files dated yesterday.
Assuming this set of pictures no longer exists on my computer, is there any chance of retrieving them from the camera's card? (yes, I had iPhoto delete them).
As you can imagine this has not raised my better half's opinion of either computers or digital cameras (or of me either, for that matter).
    Thanks,
    Lee in Tasmania

Hi, Mike. Before tackling your technical questions, two general suggestions for getting more benefit from your posts here:
    1. After promising not to gripe, don't gripe. Ask questions. Most people would rather help someone who doesn't start right off grousing and whining.
    2. When your problem is different from that of someone else whose thread you're reading, start a new thread using the "Post new Topic" link at the upper left of the forum topic list page. Then you aren't drawing attention away from the problem posted by someone else, and you can give your post a subject heading that's more likely to draw attention to your specific issue(s).
    As to your questions:
1 and 3) iPhoto up to v. 2.0.1 was (and remains) freeware. All later versions are available only as part of the commercial iLife 4 package. Certain Macs were shipped with iLife preinstalled (and easily reinstallable, using the discs that were shipped with those computers). But no retail OS X installer disc set or upgrade disc set has ever included iLife — not any version of the OS, nor any version of iLife. So if you bought and installed an OS upgrade, iLife wasn't part of it.
No, trashing the iPhoto pref file doesn't delete albums. I've never used iP 2, so I suppose it's possible that after trashing the .plist for that version, you might need to redirect iP to its library on its next launch. But in light of your question 2, it's more likely that you've corrupted your iPhoto Library (the database iP uses to keep track of your pictures and how you've edited them) by moving things around in the iPhoto Library folder or taking things out of it.
Rebuild your library: Start iPhoto while holding down the Shift and Option keys, and keep holding them down until you're asked whether you want to rebuild. Click Yes, then Save, and wait for the rebuild to be completed.
    2) No, you don't have a choice. Iphoto always stores your photos in its iPhoto Library folder, which by default is located on your boot drive: Hard drive > Users > your account folder > Pictures > iPhoto Library. Within the iPhoto Library folder, the arrangement of everything is up to iPhoto, and it's the First Law of iPhoto that you'd better leave that arrangement untouched. This is a firm limitation in the versions of iPhoto you're using, and it arises from a fundamental presumption by the designers that the application will, for most of its users, be the only photo viewing, editing and cataloguing software they have. Therefore (the assumption continues) most users won't care where their pictures are stored, provided iPhoto can access them — which it can, as long as its database remains intact. A consequence of these assumptions underlying the design of iPhoto is that for the user who frequently handles his photos in other applications, or who has other important reasons to care how the photos are filed on his hard drive(s), iPhoto may not be very useful — it may even be actively annoying. Users who don't match the designers' demographic assumptions may be better off looking for other software that fits their needs better. You may be one of them. No application works well for everyone's purposes.
iPhoto is software for family snapshooters, to keep all their photos handy for viewing, printing, slide shows, and web page use. It offers very little image-editing power or library-organizing flexibility, but its modest capabilities satisfy many home users. Professionals, sophisticated photo enthusiasts, photo archivists and people who just like to be able to file everything their own way have dozens of other photo software options to choose from. When its limitations and requirements are properly understood, iPhoto can have its uses even for some of those people: I use Photoshop, GraphicConverter, ViewIt and several other photo-related applications on a daily basis, but thousands of my pictures are stored in iPhoto libraries, as well as in other places on my hard drives. Though it was certainly never intended as such by its designers, iPhoto can even be used as an instant-access backup repository for photos whose primary storage is elsewhere.
You can also create and use multiple iPhoto Libraries in different locations, if you like: see "Switching between iPhoto Libraries" in iPhoto Help.
Later versions of iPhoto, particularly v. 6, offer much greater power and flexibility than v. 2 or 4.

  • Facebook album missing from iphoto

I am using both iPhoto and Aperture, and both are linked to my Facebook account. However, the primary photo album I use on Facebook - the default "Mobile uploads" album - does not show up in either application. All the other albums do...and if I create a new album in Facebook, it nearly immediately shows up in iPhoto. I've tried removing my Facebook account and re-adding it, but each time I do it goes through and syncs up the albums and omits the Mobile Uploads.
Any ideas how to gently nudge iPhoto (and/or Aperture) into noticing that album on Facebook?
Here's a clue about what may be the source of the problem. Some time ago, when I first connected Aperture to my Facebook account something happened and I had two Mobile Uploads albums and, if I remember correctly, they seemed to be duplicates of each other. So I deleted one of them, thinking somehow Aperture was goofing off and displaying the same album twice. But I believe what I later found, is that the folder that was left behind was a static copy of the "live" Mobile Uploads album on Facebook - so I think I deleted the live one. This became clear when I added new photos to the album on Facebook and they were not updating in Aperture.
So it seems like somewhere my Mac is being told to ignore that album. Interestingly, I got a new Mac a couple of months ago, and it also ignores Mobile Uploads folder so it seems like that instruction is coming from Facebook, rather than being controlled by something locally on my Mac (I didn't import anything from my old Mac).
Just theories...I have no idea what's actually going on. But I want to tell iPhoto and/or Facebook "Hey look...forget what you may have been told in the past. Here's a Facebook account, and here's a copy of iPhoto. You guys talk, and show all the albums currently in that Facebook account in iPhoto."
    Any help?

I think if you go to this link you can fill out a form which sends a message to iTunes support:
    https://expresslane.apple.com/Symptoms.do
I found that by going to the Express Lane (https://expresslane.apple.com/), clicking "iTunes" under product categories, clicking "iTunes Store", and selecting "Purchases, Billing, and Redemption".

  • Albums missing from iPhoto albums folder

I have just noticed that whenever I create a new album in iPhoto, it does not get put into the pictures>iPhoto Library>albums file. It does not seem to be anywhere when doing a search in finder, although the album is on the iPhoto window. I have older albums, but no newer ones. I like to be able to find photos in albums this way when moving to Photoshop. Any idea where they are and why they are not being created in this file? I cannot find any preferences that would have had them moved and like I said, can't seem to find them anywhere.

New? About 2005 with v5 of the application.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use THIS
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
