Albums in Aperture vs Albums in iPhoto

Hi,
I am a bit confusing about the usage of Albums in iPhoto and Aperture 3.
My understanding,
iPhoto: adding a picture to albums is just to create links, there is always one physical copy of image, modifying the picture from an album will update all albums that have that picture. The concept of Album in iPhoto is more like a tag or a label?
Aperture: adding a picture to albums is to copy physical image files, you may have duplicated images if a picture is added to several Albums. Change of a picture in an album will not update the same picture in other albums.
Is my understanding correct?
Since my iPhoto and Aperture use same the iPhoto library, how do they actually work together when browsing albums? iPhoto creates links but Aperture copies files.

versions do not mean duplications of images, versions mean changes-to-be-applied?
That is correct.  Versions are image files in limbo - just a set of adjustments describing the changes that need to be applied to the original to render the image as an image file. You create new versions by using the command "Photos > Duplicate version" or "Photos > New version from original". Or by setting the preference to create new versions when making adjustments.
This paragraph in the manual is very misleading:
When you drag an image into a different album, Aperture creates a duplicate version of the image and places it in the album. An image can be copied into any album in the same project or into albums in different projects. The destination album can be an album, book album, Light Table album, slideshow, or web journal or webpage album.
Dragging between albums does not create new versions - it adds a link to the same version to the destination album. You can test that, by dragging an image to an album and flagging it in the album. You will see that all occurences of this version in all albums will be flagged. SO there is still only one version after dragging, but used in different albums.

  • "one or more of the items in your selection contains Aperture albums that are not supported in iphoto".

I have some folders in iPhoto called 'Recovered Folder'. When I try to delete them I get this message: "one or more of the items in your selection contains Aperture albums that are not supported in iphoto".
I don't use Aperture (did install it to try it out), and have deleted Aperture App from my Mac.
How can I get rid of these fodlers?

    i finally figured this out:
fyi, iphoto and aperture can now share (i.e., access) the same library. apple details it here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5260?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
i use both iphoto and aperture, and i suspect something went amiss, at some point, while aperture was accessing my iphoto library.
this is how i fixed the problem:
i launched aperture, then (per the instructions linked above) switched to (i.e., accessed) my iphoto library. i was then able to delete the "recovered folder" and the album it contained. i then quit aperture and relaunched iphoto.
NOTE: at that time, although i expected the "recovered folder" to be gone, it was still present. but this time, i was able to delete the folder from within iphoto without the "contains aperture items" error message.
(Sparky030405, i realize you've since deleted aperture. while i can't say my method is the *only* way to solve this problem, it's the way i was able to solve it. so, you might consider reinstalling aperture in order to delete the folder, then uninstalling aperture, once again.)

  • I purchased (and have now deleted Aperture from my computer and want to use only iPhoto.  How do I delete Aperture albums but keep the pics in iPhoto?

I purchased (and have now deleted) Aperture from my computer and want to use only iPhoto.  (Aperture was simply too much program for me.)  How do I delete Aperture albums but keep the pics in iPhoto?  Please accept my apologies in advance if this is a dumber than dumb question.  I simply want all vestiges of Aperture to go away with losing all my albums.  Any help would be appreciated!

Aperture added  a second view to your library.
You now have an additional section in your Source list , called events. But this section lists exactly the same events that you are seeing in the "Events" view. Don't delete anything from there, or you will delete your photos. But you can press the "Hide" button to collaps that section. But someday you may want to use this list. It makes it very easy to move photos between events.

  • Missing folders, albums and images when Migrating from iPhoto to Aperture

I have 3,333 image in iPhoto (v.7.1.3). I'd like to import the entire library into Aperture (v.2.1) and use that primarily to edit and organize the images from here on out. Problem is, when I try to import the iPhoto library from Aperture, it only imports half of the images (1,553 images). I tried deleting the Aperture library and re-importing everything but had the same result. Any suggestions would be appreciated -- I'm eager to get started in Aperture after years of iPhoto.

Hope we get an answer - I'm in the same situation as you, though I just went from iPhoto to A2.x on an older G5 tower. I've been debating whether to take the time to go through them, reorganize "better" than they were under iPhoto or wait for a more elegant solution...

  • Facebook "Make Shared Album" breaks Aperture connection

As far as I can gather, Facebook albums of type "Shared Album" will disappear from your Aperture Facebook listing.
You can no longer share photos directly from Aperture for Facebook albums of this type.
I've not found much discussion on the web about this, but I have confirm this behavior by creating a test album in FB, then sharing it--it disappears.
If anyone knows of a fix to this, I'd appreciate it.
    Regards...

Same problem here and it's the same with iPhoto.  It's just plain ridiculous and I don't know why Apple hasn't fixed it.  As a result, I'm not using the Aperture Facebook uploader anymore.  I'm using a 3rd party solution: Facebook Exporter for Aperture by Sean Farley.  It has it's unique problems as well, but at least Sean is working on it. http://seanfarley.org/aperture
Does anyone have any better solutions?

  • Syncing certain Aperture 3 albums with iphone causes inconsistency

    Hi!
I'm trying to sync some of my projects/albums in aperture 3 with an iphone 3g with latest firmware and have the following issue: Sometimes iTunes shows that there're only one photo in the album, while there may be some dozens of photos. This happens with random albums and selecting/deselecting this album in iTunes doesn't fix that. I've tried to relaunch all apps, change the number of photos in albums and that doesn't work too. iTunes just tells there're single photo in the album.
Interesting thing is noticed: selecting/deselecting that albums changes the capacity progress bar, but in the AUDIO section. I'm absolutely shure there's no any audio/video files in that project.
Syncing Vega Mod project. Audio capacity is 0,74.
Then selecting Vega Mod project. iTunes shows 1 version (but there're 8) and audio capacity changes to 0,83 o_O ??? Did i miss something?

I've tried to rename the album inside the Aperture, that has changed the behavor of capacity slider (it is not changed in audio section anymore) and gave the different number of items in the albumm (now shows 2 instead of 8).
I also verified that all items inside the album is the same kind/rating/category - all is unrated and just has been imported from iphoto.
Rebuilding and checking Aperture library for consistency didn't give any result.

  • Complex smart albums in Aperture

    Hello,
I thought I saw a complex smart album in either Aperture or iPhoto which combined two sets of "opposing" criteria.
    Example:
    Any
    Album name is "album1"
    Album name is "album 2"
    All
    Names do not contain "word"
If I remeber correctly there was a clearly defined line in the Smart Album creation window.
Has anyone seen this as well

    Hi Frank,
yes, you can combine several rules in a smart Filter or a Smart Album in Aperture, even with opposing criteria.
But this only works for rules using regular albums - I never succeeded, when I tried to reference a "Smart Album" in these rules.
    Regards
    Léonie
For example, this Smart album computes the difference album between two Aperture albums: All images in the Screensaver that are not in the gallery and are not rejected.
Added: But complex rules combining "Any" and "All" I have only seen in iTunes, not in Aperture; the only exeption I know of are keywords. You can have a toplevel combination of "any" or "all", and at the keywords level again a new combination.

  • Albums not available for browsing in iphoto 6

I have just noticed that I cannot browse for pictures in iphoto 6 like I used to be able to in iphoto 4.
What I mean is, if I was writing an email, say, and then wanted to attach a photo, I could navigate to my iphoto library and choose the Albums folder, where I could easily find a particular photo to attach.
I see that in iphoto 6, there is no Albums folder listed when I go to browse. I have albums created, but the folder "Albums" is no longer there in the iphoto library folder in the Finder. This is a real problem. How does one go about browsing for a particular photo without openning iphoto and exporting it or writing the email directly from there? Is there a way to get the Albums folder to reappear in the iphoto library folder?

I see all my smart albums in iTunes when I sync the iPad. But sometimes iTunes is confused about the current library. I have several iPhoto and Aperture Libryries, and I noticed that iTunes sometimes still tries to sync the previously opened library, not the most recently opened one. To be able to tell which library iTunes is showing, I name one of the projects exactly like the library. So I can tell easily, if iTunes is syncing an older copy of the library.
For example a small test library named "iPhoto Library" containing one smart album:

  • A single photo in Aperture smart album shows multiple times on Apple TV2.

Sometimes a random photo in my Aperture smart albums displays on my ATV2 multiple times..can I fix this? For example, currently a single picture shows up on the Apple TV in the photos taken "in the past week" smart album 124 times, and the same picture shows up in the "in the past month" smart album 15 times.
When I double check the picture in the original smart album on the computer, it appears correctly, i.e. only one time.
    Suggestions?

I'm having the same problem.  I deleted all the photos in the photostream then tried to drag a couple new ones in to see if they'd synch.  Nothing is happening.  I recently installed aperture (have about 125 gb in the library).  If anyone has an idea what to do, i'm open to try something.

  • Syncing albums from Aperture 3.5.1 to iPad

I have a series of albums in Aperture that I sync with my iPad using iTunes. In the past they always synced as albums, but now they have started syncing with the photos arranged by date as events. This is NOT how I want them arranged! How can I make the albums sync as albums again?

Are you sure that it isn't how you are viewing them on the iPad? Open Photos on the iPad and note that there are 2 icons at the bottom (Photos & Albums). Have you tried changing that to Albums?

  • Deleting Flickr-albums in Aperture

    Hi,
When I delete a Flick-album in Aperture all photos are deleted on Flickr.
    I don't want this...
Is there a way to delete a Flickr-album in Aperture and leave all images online?
    Thanks,
    Vincent

I 'disabled' the web account, but couldn't 'Remove' it. Thats the catch. I can't remove the account while Aperture is synchronizing. I can't stop or pause Aperture's sync process long enough to delete the account. Therefore I get stuck in a loop.
What I just tried, and was successful with:
Go to my MobileMe gallery page. Delete every gallery on the page. This apparently makes Aperture take a longer time to find the albums to sync to (this comes in very handy later)
    Launch Aperture.
Wait for it to start sync'ing (or more correctly, start trying to find the albums you just deleted).
click the 'sync' swirling icon next to the current gallery that is in the sync process.
Aperture throws a warning dialog something like "you can continue to sync by clicking this button again later".
Click OK, and prepare to do the following as fast as you can......
Very quickly, before Aperture decides to start syncing the next gallery in line, click:
    File->Web Accounts->Edit Web Accounts
Select 'MobileMe' and hit the ' - ' button to remove the account.
IF the "removing this MobileMe account will delete all your stuff" warning dialog pops up BEFORE the Aperture Sync process starts on the next MobileMe album, you're in luck, and you can successfully delete the MobileMe account. If not, go back and try again.
Aperture may 'unexpectedly quit' a time or two, but once I got the timing just right, I managed to finally delete the MobileMe web account, and now Aperture seems to have, for real, forgotten all about MobileMe.

  • I deleted my albums from Facebook while cleaning my iPhoto archive.. Does anyone know if i can get them back and how? thanks!

i deleted my albums from Facebook while cleaning my iPhoto archive.. Does anyone know if i can get them back and how? thanks!

    while cleaning my iPhoto archive
What do you mean by that?  Do you mean you deleted photos or albums from your iPhoto Library?
You best solution is to use Time Machine to restore your library from just before you "cleaned your iPhoto archive".

  • Why aren't my albums viewable from the finder/pictures/iphoto library ?

When I want to import a photo to a website and I choose the picture file on my hard drive then the iphoto library none of the albums that I have created in iphoto are visible. The only organization is chronological and I have no idea where to find my pictures. I end up having to create a folder on my desktop and import the photos there first. There must be a better way!
    Joan

Click here for information. The iPhoto Library is a Mac-style package instead of an UNIX-style one; this type of package exists in Mac OS 9, which has no UNIX connection.

  • IPhoto "new album" command returning null album

If I run this script, the result is "album id 0 of application "iPhoto"".
    tell application "iPhoto"
set a to new album name "Foo"
    return a
    end tell
I'm not very experienced with AppleScript, but I believe the id 0 indicates "null" -- if I try to do something with it, like "return name of a", I get an error: "Can't get album id 0".
In contrast, if I do this, the result is "album id 4.294967373E+9 of application "iPhoto"":
    tell application "iPhoto"
set a to new album name "Foo"
    return album "Foo"
    end tell
This seems very simple, but apparently I'm missing something.
(The reason I care is that iPhoto's album names aren't unique identifiers -- if I create a new album, I want to be sure I'm working with that album and not another that happens to have the same name.)

Looks like a bug. Try this as a workaround:
    *tell application "iPhoto"*
    *new album name "Foo"*
    *set A to last album*
    *end tell*

  • After update to yosemite screensaver doesn't find aperture library albums

After I updated to Yosemite the screensaver doesn't seem able to find aperture library albums.
When I select an aperture library album (last 3 months) the screensaver is initially able to find this album. After a while and for sure after a restart, it uses the default  'National Geographic'.
It looks like it takes a long time for the screensaver to open the selected album and then it finally takes the default folder.
    Does anybody have an idea?

Screen Saver changes on it’s own
Another workaround is to delete the pictures in the National Geographic folder and add your picture there. Hard drive level Library/ScreenSavers.
