Albums vs SmartAlbums
I've switched from PC and am cleaning up my image metadata before moving it to the mac to use with Aperture.
The vast majority of my images are scans of old prints and negatives.
They have IPTC metadata for: headline and/or caption, keywords, locations, credit and perhaps other that's less important to the discussion
My thought process, as I'm preparing the transfer, is that I will set up projects in Aperture whose contents are SmartAlbums - so that everything is auto-driven.
I am trying to come up with a scenario where it would be beneficial for a Project to NOT rely on a SmartAlbum... and I can't think of one...
Is an Album just another tool, that might be helpful to some folks - especially if they're not using metadata - and might not be useful for other folks? Or is there an advantage to Albums that I'm not understanding?
Thanks!
Marion
To be perfectly redundant to some of the other posts but in some different words-
You have a grasp of the two different albums.
There are a ton of occasions where a static album is a better choice than a smart album. One of them is for slide shows where you absolutely want the images that you want and do not want that to dynamically change by itself. Another is keeping track of specific exports to different clients and services. Another is to avoid arbitrarily complex queries to include/exclude wash iron and dry what ends up in the album. I guess if creating arbitrarily complex metadata and queries is a hobby or pastime that would okay to just use smart albums for every occasion and it is theoretically possible to do it but a significant number of occasions it is far more practical to create a static album.
I look at smart albums a more general collection tool and albums as very very specific collection tools. An analogue would be - do you ever ever select specific images using shift click or command click? or do you always always always figure out how to do a very specific query so that just the images that you want show up in the browser so that you can just to a command a to select them all? Personally I do both, queries to get me just about there and then pick out exactly what I want from there.
RB
Ps. there is at least one thing that albums can do that smart albums can't from a technical point of view. If you ever want to take a project of images with you on your laptop that physically exist in multiple different projects, even though you can create a smart album in a global context and drag it into a project and it will retain it's original creation context it will not export anything with file->export->project. If you do the same thing with a static album the project export will actually drag all of the image versions, stacks, and masters with it.

Smart Album : Inconsistency in the Date Type format used inside Aperture ?
Hello,
After using Aperture 2.0 for some days, I tried to create a Smart Album using as creation option for the Album the Date + "is in the Range" option which is leaving two blank fields for filling the two dates which are supposed to be the date limits of the pictures that the user wants to select.
My OS X is set to the italian language so our date format is the dd/mm/yy type.
When I tried to insert some dates in our format (dd/mm/yy) the SmartAlbum seemed to not work at all (not selecting any picture, or was coming out with weird results).
After checking carefully that there was no filter set which could prevent the correct visualization of the pictures I had no explanation for the problem.
At first I thought that this specific option was buggy as the other Smartalbum creation options (Keywords etc.) seemed to work properly.
Then I had the idea and I tried to use the english format (mm/dd/yy) for the two dates inside the date range fields and to my surprise everything worked properly.
So basically it seems that Aperture recognises the dates correctly only giving in input the american date format mm/dd/yy.
What is not so noice is that there is no check on the date limit correctness so basically it is possible to really mess up with the dates.
I'm also actually surprised the Aperture doesn't complies with the OS X date type which could seem the logical thing to do or at least is not consistent with the date type management inside the program because for example the pictures Dates are instead correctly listed in the List View of the browser according to the OS X date type (dd/mm/yy).
I was wondering what is happening in countries where the date separator is not the "/" but the "." like typically used in Germany which would add another variable to the software routine which is interpreting the date input fields.....
Maybe this could help other non english users who could have been confused like me on the same issue....
Did you notice the same behaviour ? Am I missing something ?
UbySmart Albums will search in the Folder/Project that is shown at the top of the search HUD as well as all Folders and Projects "below" in your structure. However, it will not search through any Albums in that structure. Here is an example:
You images are always stored in Projects (yellow icons) and lets say this is how it looks:
FolderA/ProjectA (this Project stores: ImageA1, ImageA2)
FolderA/ProjectB (this Project stores: ImageB1, ImageB2)
Let us say that you have two Albums like below but there is an image from ProjectB in AlbumA, which looks like this:
FolderA/ProjectA/AlbumA (this Album has pointers to: ImageA1, ImageA2, ImageB1)
FolderA/ProjectB/AlbumB (this Album has pointers to: ImageB1, ImageB2)
If you create a Smart Album below ProjectA it will only show ImageA1 and ImageA2 since it only search ProjectA and not AlbumA.
This may be the issue you have.
Are you 100% sure that the Project your Smart Album is pointing at does include the images you are trying to search through. As you see above then it won't find them if they are only in the albums below that project.
Here are a few rules that I follow in order to avoid getting confused over where my images are located: A) Only include images in albums below a project that are stored in that project. B) Create all my smart albums at top library level and if necessary add extra filters like project name.
Hope you understand.

I'm having an issue with SmartAlbums (iPhoto 5... was in iPhoto 4, too), that is primarily related to film photos I get digitized by the store. On trips, I use 2 cameras - one color and one b&w. When I get the prints and photo cds back, the images on the cds will be the development date, not the date I took the photos, which makes sense as the stores don't know when we took the pictures. (no issue with digital camera as it date/time stamps each picture and they import in the chronological order)
So, when I import into iPhoto, I try to sort them, and see that they only seem to sort based on date, not time of day within date.
I use the batch update and change the dates to be the photographed date and the time to be in chronological sequence. Though the Info for each picture will show that they then have the correclty updated chronological sequence, SmartAlbums don't look to use the time stamp when sorting, as the pictures
Sequnce should be, based on batch updated date and time stamp
Color picture 1 12/01/06 12:00:10
Color picture 2 12/01/06 12:00:20
B&W picture 1 12/01/06 12:00:30
B&W picture 2 12/01/06 12:00:40
B&W picture 3 12/01/06 12:00:50
Color picture 3 12/01/06 12:01:00
The sequence won't necessarily show this way.
Does anybody know if iPhoto and/or SmartAlbums are supposed to sort by time within date, too?
If not, I suppose I'll send this to Apple as a needed enhancement. If the sort should work, do you have any insights into what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks,
Mike
P.S. The ideal solution I try is to drag and drop sort pictures into the correct order in a regular (non-Smart) Album, and batch update the pictures from the first one to the last. The SmartAlbum will only get them to the right date.hi,
Try this.
Use sy-tabix instead of sy-index.

IPhoto – iPod Album sync issues
Has anybody else noticed that iPhoto albums do always make it to the iPod, but that the album sort order doesnt? All albums SmartAlbums and regular, that I have created since the initial iPod transfer, have wound up at the bottom of the iPod album list. This is most frustrating, as I prefer the sorted list I have in iPhoto, which usually puts the newer ones on the top. The longer I scroll through the albums, the more cautious non-iPod users become (I meet many who are otherwise quite impressed with the mobile family photo album).
My only plan to correct this is to restore my iPod.
Any and all help will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike

Extending library/smartalbums (builtin) - any information available?
hello aperture world.
did anyone find some informations about how to change or extend the builtin list of smartalbums shown in projects panel?
Can't the list of smartalbums be extended to let's say: 'before 2000', '2001', '2002' , ...., '5stars', '1orbetter', 'rejected' ...
did i miss any documentation about the smartalbums search criteria?
how to write my own searches?
greetz
=:-)fYes, it seems to be possible, to create a smartalbum outside,
quitting aperture,
move the smartalbumfile to the ' Built-in Smart Albums' folder,
restarting aperture
and having the smartalbum within the projects-Library listing.
BUT, i did recognize a significant difference in size from factory-smartalbums and the self-created ones! (facrory - 4 kb, selfmade - 488 kb).
I did not investigate the difference in runtime yet, but i think i can remember a threat on the forum to point to the slowness of selfmade-smartalbums before.
Right now, my favorite is still to create queries for the 'projects-Library listing' from the factory files, to make them the same size and (hopefully) the same runtime-behavior as factory-queries.
BTW - 'Aperture/Contents/Resources/FactoryLibraryQueries/' only holds the templates for the project-library list, and
' Aperture Library/ Built-in Smart Albums/' stores the actually displayed project-library list, but it seems that there is some information also the SQLite db somewhere (Names, ..?).

Can you show at a glance which event images are in albums?
Say I had an event containing multiple similar but different images, is there a way to show in the grid view for example which images have already been used in one or more albums?
Would be handy to be able to select a 'show list of albums containing this image'dialogue box. I guess you could hide images you've used but that wouldn't work automatically, nor would any other tagging/rating.
Another approach would be to make albums containing everything in a given event, then move the images out of that album once used, just seems fiddly to me.
ACAC
Would be handy to be able to select a 'show list of albums containing this image'dialogue box.
Yes it would and many people have suggested tit. Add your voice to the chorus at iPhoto Menu -> Provide Apple Feedback.
A workaround - and it's no better - is to go to an album and select al, then give all those pics a keyword. Then in grid view you can see which pics have the keyword. (View -> Keywords)

Bit more detail...
Mac Book Air has been struggling for space for a while so I bough at time capsule a) for back up and b) to host my itunes folder remotely. This didnt' work. I took it into the Genius bar and the genius there told me that time capsule is not designed for anything other than back up. Instead I have to connect a G drive through the time capsule's wireless router to my MBA.
I followed his instructions - moved my files from the Time Capsule and MBA directly onto the G Drive - which took a heartening 2 hrs so something must have been happening - and the held down 'Alt' when starting iTunes and selected the new itunes folder as the location of my itunes libarary which I wanted iTunes to 'point at'. When I opened iTunes only 10 albums are visible now.
In ITunes advanced preferences it says it is pointing at the correct folder. The files are all cleary there when I open the G Drive folder to take a look. But I cannot get iTunes to find them.
Any suggestions?
Secondary challenge - in spite of deleting the original itunes folder on my MBA I still get messages pop up telling me my start up disk is out of space and I need to clear some - I expected to stop getting this message now I had done this exercise above. I have emptied Trash. Again - any pointers appreciated. I am new to this world of 'intuitive' macbooks.
CheersAfter admittedly only a quick read the one thing you don't say is how you are trying to make this move. Most people with moving library issues do it the wrong way. Plenty of web sites tell you how to do it the wrong way.
If the iTunes application is started before the drive with the library is fully mounted and awake iTunes will revert back to the internal drive. -
In Photoshop Express, I want images to appear sorted by filename. In the "view as a table" it sorts fine. When I revert to the thumbnail view, the arrangement is random. The dropdown "show" list does not offer an option for showing by filename. If I select the"custom" option, it means I would need to sort 300 images by filename MANUALLY (!!!), a job that a computer does in milliseconds. Anyone with a solution? Thanks.
fwiw, with my images in the 'Folder Location' view the photos are in order by their Windows filename. That is the same order as the hardcopy album the photos came from. So I then created a PSE Album. I selected all my photos and moved them into that album. The order of the pictures was retained in the Album. That worked out great. I wanted my PSE images to be in the same order. I thought I would do it with tags. But creating an album seems to work just fine.

CD imported to wrong folder organization Album/Artist instead of Artist/Alb
I imported (ripped) a CD and the folder convention iTunes created in my music library was like this:
AlbumName/ArtistName
instead of
ArtistName/AlbumName
How could this happen. I have ripped hundreds of CD's and this is the first time it has happened. I am letting iTuned organize my files.
Any clues?
Thanks!Actually I know exactlty what bae77345 is referring to, because I am running into the same problem. Thus my search in the forums.
Usually Ive had no problem in importing a song into iTunes, and changing the song IN iTunes to read as follows.
Name of Song: DAYS `EUREKA OPENING MIX`
Artist: Anime
Album : Eureka seveN OST 1
Album artist: FLOW
And the Windown path would look like this
C:\Documents and Settings\Varxtis\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\Anime\Eureka seveN OST 1\1-01 DAYS `EUREKA OPENING MIX`.mp3
Notice It goes Artist>Album>Song Title
Album Artist would not even be part of the path, which is exactly what I want.
but now it shows
C:\Documents and Settings\Varxtis\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\FLOW\Eureka seveN OST 1\1-01 DAYS `EUREKA OPENING MIX`.mp3
Which goes AlbumArtist>Album>Song Title. it doesn't even include the artist as part of the path. How annoying.
It makes a HUGE difference to me because I need everything in "iTunes Music" library in windows to be pathed as Artist>Album: Song Title. I use a different MP3 Player so, it's almost impossible to have half one way (those that have albumartist) and half another (those that don't) BTW, Sorry apple. . .no Offense. I've had and loved an iPod. . . but it died and I got this as a gift.
I never changed any settings, and quite honestly it's been about a month since I had to update my MP3 player music (thus noticing the problem). So, there HAS to be a reason for it to change. And more importantly, a way to change it back.

I have an itunes account and an ipod, and when I purchased 2 albums on the computer they synced straight to the ipod. I bought an iphone and used the usb cord from the computer to it to sync the itunes albums to the new phone. Everything transfered, and those were albums I had uploaded (not purchased from the itunes store), except the two albmus I just purchased from the itunes store. They appear on my itunes on the computer and ipod, but not on the iphone. What did I fail to do or did I do incorrectly?
This might sound weird, but here's an idea which worked for me re music that was newly added to itunes and showed up in my ipod but wouldn't play - I simply played the tracks in itunes first, just a second of time or so will do it, not the whole track, then connect the ipod and sync again and this time they played - hope this helps.
-
My ipod touch lost all its data due to my computer crashing and having to be rebooted.
This resulted in all software being wiped - including iTunes. Therefore, I lost all my music, apps etc on my library on the computer. I then synced my iPod into the computer which then updated the ipod software and then it cleared all my music.
However, I managed to find my music on the purchased list and was able to re download it.
Although, I'm aware that one album did not apper on the purchased playlist - I have an email to prove that I purchased this album however, it is not appearing to allow for me to download it.
I am pretty sure that this is not the only album but due to the amount of music I previously had on my iPod it is difficult to tell what is missing.
Is there anything I can do to get all my previous music back?
Is there anything I can do by contacting Apple to see if they can help?
Would greatly appreciate any help whatsoever! Just about pulling my hair out - due to no available phone calls until next thursday and NO email address to contact! Thanks very much I have contacted them via this. Just hope they respond quickly- rather annoing! Greatly appreciated though

Sometimes it decides to immediatly shut offafter clicking on music and at other times I can wait a couple minutes for it to load all the album covers and scroll slowly down to the album I want to play. I can play music from playlists still and on the itunes store, but if I scroll fast through the albums in my music, it shuts off. Thanks for the help. Here's my error message details:

I used to have an album now i dont. My ipod says that the album is purchased. It wont let me download it and tries to make me buy the songs. my computer doesnt say that it is purchased and only has the digital booklet. HELP ME!
You should really read the manual.
"How do you restore from backup? "
Restore. When given the choice, choose to use backup.
"And how can I check to see if the pics and videos are on my computer somewhere first??"
They would only be where you put them. What program did you use to import them? Pics/vids taken with ipod are not part of the sync process at all. You should be importing them just as you would with any digital camera.
If you did not import them, then they are not on your computer. -
OS is Windows 7
I updated iTunes the other day and I decided to run "get album art" and instead of finding artwork, it made some of the artwork I already had show up as white squares, or disapear entirely. The ones that are white squares show up under the get info, but not in itunes. I did click in view for show al artwork, no luck. Many of these albums I bought from iTunes. The ones that the artwork was deleted some albums I can buy on iTunes, but already owned, and iTunes found the artwork before, but now cannot. Some are albums that I spent many hours finding and adding the artwork myself. I am very frustrated. I cannot find the time to manually install artwork for thousands of songs.
My work computer is Windows 8, so I really don't want to hear windows vs OSX argument. My company won't switch to mac because you like it better, so I just need a solution to my issue. iTunes it has always worked better for me on my work PC than my macBook, I dont know why, but I don't take two laptops with me when I travel so I have my iTunes library on the PC that has to come with me. This is the first time an update has screwed things up for me.Well my first guess was wrong. The line that failed is the one that writes out the image to disk. I've not revisited the code for that script for ages, but it seems I did add in an extra test for missing files a little while later, then forgot to upload the change. I can reproduce the error message if I deliberately rename a file to confuse iTunes so that seems the most likely reason for your problem with the script. I've uploaded a new build of CreateFolderArt which should work better.
See FindTracks for a tool to repair broken links. You should probably get that issue fixed first.
I know what SPSS stands for but that is all I know about it.

How can I give songs on one album different illustrations.
Pete Philly, a Dutch singer, did a project, called "Open Loops". He uploaded a number of songs that didn't really fit in his new album, to be downloaded for free. I downloaded it, and it turns out that every song has its own illustration. I was curious if it was possible for several songs on one album to have different illustrations in iTunes. Is it possible? If so, how can I do it? Thanks in advance.
From another thread
If you just highlight the name of the genre and press play/pause, you won't have to select an artist.
