idoc:
Data Creation in Idoc
IDocs are text encoded documents with a rigid structure that are used to exchange data between R/3 and a foreign system. Instead of calling a program in the destination system directly, the data is first packed into an IDoc and then sent to the receiving system, where it is analyzed and properly processed. Therefore an IDoc data exchange is always an
asynchronous process. The significant difference between simple RFC-calls and IDoc data exchange is the fact, that every action performed on IDocs are protocolled by R/3 and IDocs can be reprocessed if an error occurred in one of the message steps.
While IDocs have to be understood as a data exchange protocol, EDI and ALE are typical use cases for IDocs. R/3 uses IDocs for both EDI and ALE to deliver data to the receiving system. ALE is basically the scheduling mechanism that defines when and between which partners and what kind of data will be exchanged on a regular or event triggered basis. Such a set-up is called an ALE-scenario.
IDoc is a intermediate document to exchange data between two SAP Systems.
*IDocs are structured ASCII files (or a virtual equivalent).
*Electronic Interchange Document
*They are the file format used by SAP R/3 to exchange data with foreign systems.
*Data Is transmitted in ASCII format, i.e. human readable form
*IDocs exchange messages
*IDocs are used like classical interface files
IDOC types are templates for specific message types depending on what is the business document, you want to exchange.
WE30 - you can create a IDOC type.
An IDOC with data, will have to be triggered by the application that is trying to send out the data.
FOr testing you can use WE19.

An IDoc is simply a data container that is used to exchange information between any two processes that can understand the syntax and semantics of the data...
1.IDOCs are stored in the database. In the SAP system, IDOCs are stored in database tables.
2.IDOCs are independent of the sending and receiving systems.
3.IDOCs are independent of the direction of data exchange.
The two available process for IDOCs are
Outbound Process
Inbound Process
AND There are basically two types of IDOCs.
Basic IDOCs
Basic IDOC type defines the structure and format of the business document that is to be exchanged between two systems.
Extended IDOCs
Extending the functionality by adding more segments to existing Basic IDOCs.
To Create Idoc we need to follow these steps:
Create Segment ( WE31)
Create Idoc Type ( WE30)
Create Message Type ( WE81)
Assign Idoc Type to Message Type ( WE82)

EDI FLOW :
Here is some thing which helps you and here the purchase order is taken as example too..
Electronic Data Interchange, or EDI, is the electronic exchange of business data. Using a standard format, EDI provides a method of transmitting business data from one computer to another, without the need to re-key data. This electronic link can result in more effective business transactions. With EDI, paper documents such as invoices can be replaced with electronic transmissions, thus time is saved, and the potential for error is minimized. Data can be exchanged at any time. Related business expenses, such as postage, printing, phone calls, and handling, can also be significantly reduced. EDI can aid in the support of manufacturing efforts, such as Just-in-Time and Third Party Warehousing, and financial efforts, such as Electronic Payments.
What parts of the business cycle can be supported by EDI?
Any business documents that are currently exchanged using paper can be converted to an EDI. Standards. Standards include ANSI X12 and XML/EDI are primarily used in the United States, while EDIFACT is used in Europe and Asia.
How does EDI get started?
EDI gets started when one company contacts another expressing interest in trading business documents electronically using Electronic Data Interchange. The two companies must first determine each other's EDI capabilities. If you do not already know your EDI capabilities, we have prepared a questionnaire to help you determine them. If you are already EDI capable, we will coordinate with your technical staff to determine a testing plan. Upon completion of testing the EDI documents, the appropriate business personnel will set a production start date to begin the exchange of EDI business data. If you are not EDI capable, we recommend you first obtain a commitment from your upper management. Your company will need to allocate resources and capital for software, hardware, testing, possible programming, and training.
What is the flow of EDI?
The flow of EDI depends on the sophistication of your systems and your EDI software. If you have internal purchasing/order entry systems, you will need interface programs that can extract and insert data out of and into these systems. EDI programs that interface with your internal systems are preferred over software that requires re-keying of data. Embassy Software specializes in seemless interface between EDI and your back office systems. Using a purchase order as an example of a business document your customer would send that PO electronically (850) to you. It could be sent either through a VAN (Value Added Network) or through an FTP server. You would take that 850 and convert it either into and ODBC database, a flat file or XML document to be imported into your Order System with the use of EDI Software such as PassportXchange.. Using EDI communication software, which is part of the PassportXchange package you would pull down data at set intervals from the VAN or FTP. These documents are then processed through EDI translation software and output to our order entry system. Finally, an EDI document called a functional acknowledgment (997) is sent to your customer.

Hi All
I am learning XI and the difference between " ALE, IDOC, RFC, BAPI, BADI "
Not clear and when to use what and how in point of XI ?
Pl..clarify me
Adv..thanks and points

The interface concept of the classic R/3 is based on two different strategies: Remote Function Calls (RFC) and data exchange through IDoc message documents. RFC makes direct and synchronous calls of a program in the remote system. If the caller is an external program it will call an RFC-enabled function in R/3 and if the calling program is the R/3 system it will call an RFC-function in another R/3-system or it will call a non-R/3 program through a gateway-proxy (usually rfcexec.exe). BAPIs are a subset of the RFC-enabled function modules, especially designed as Application Programming Interface (API) to the SAP business object, or in other words: are function modules officially released by SAP to be called from external programs.
IDocs are text encoded documents with a rigid structure that are used to exchange data between R/3 and a foreign system. Instead of calling a program in the destination system directly, the data is first packed into an IDoc and then sent to the receiving system, where it is analyzed and properly processed. Therefore an IDoc data exchange is always an asynchronous process.
The philosophical difference between EDI and ALE can be pinned as follows: If we send data to an external partner, we generally speak of EDI, while ALE is a mechanism to reliable replicate data between trusting systems to store a redundant copy of the IDoc data. The difference is made clear, when we think of a purchase order that is sent as an IDoc. If we send the purchase order to a supplier then the supplier will store the purchase order as a sales order. However, if we send the purchase order via ALE to another R/3 system, then the receiving system will store the purchase order also as a purchase order.
I hope this will help you to understand the difference bet..those

You need to create idocs for the same. Have a look at below link.It will heip you surely.
http://help.sap.com/printdocu/core/Print46c/en/data/pdf/BCSRVEDI/CAEDI.pdf
To Create Idoc we need to follow these steps:
Create Segment ( WE31)
Create Idoc Type ( WE30 )
Create Message Type ( WE81 )
Assign Idoc Type to Message Type ( WE82 )
Creating a Segment
Go to transaction code WE31
Enter the name for your segment type and click on the Create icon
Type the short text
Enter the variable names and data elements
Save it and go back
Go to Edit -> Set Release
Follow steps to create more number of segments
Create IDOC Type
Go to transaction code WE30
Enter the Object Name, select Basic type and click Create icon
Select the create new option and enter a description for your basic IDOC type and press enter
Select the IDOC Name and click Create icon
The system prompts us to enter a segment type and its attributes
Choose the appropriate values and press Enter
The system transfers the name of the segment type to the IDOC editor.
Follow these steps to add more number of segments to Parent or as Parent-child relation
Save it and go back
Go to Edit -> Set release

<b>RFC</b>
Remote Function Call:
RFCs are requests that an SAP component sends to invoke functions on remote systems, or calls that remote systems initiate to invoke functions on an SAP component.A process that can accept RFCs from SAP components. This allows SAP components to access functions in external systems. In SAP BC terminology, the process is called a Listener. Listeners are one or more threads on SAP Business Connector that wait for incoming requests from SAP components. Listeners are named and register with an SAP gateway to indicate that they are ready to accept requests. Listeners can accept RFC or tRFC requests.
Transactional RFC (tRFC) and Queued RFC (qRFC). tRFC is used mainly to transfer ALE Intermediate Documents (IDocs).
Transactional RFC:
If an error occurs during a synchronous remote function call, the system cannot tell at what point the error occurred (most crucially, whether the function module was actually processed in R/3 before the operation failed). Restarting a failed call is therefore a dangerous thing to do, since you risk duplicating a completed function call.
To alleviate this problem, you can use transactional RFC, which guarantees that each function call you issue will only be executed once, even if you submit it repeatedly to the R/3 System. The system implements this safeguard by assigning a unique transaction ID (TID) to each transaction that you submit. When you attempt to process the transaction, the system checks whether that TID has already been processed. If it has, the transaction is ignored.
Queued RFC:
When you use transactional RFC, you cannot guarantee the order in which the function calls will be processed in the system (it is quite possible that one call might overtake another). For cases where you need to specify a particular processing order, you can use queued RFC, which is an extension of transactional RFC. In qRFC, you place each function call in a logical queue. A function call cannot be executed until all of its predecessors in the queue have been processed. Queued RFC calls are processed asynchronously.
RFC is an SAP interface protocol. Based on CPI-C, it considerably simplifies the programming of communication processes between systems.
RFCs enable you to call and execute predefined functions in a remote system - or even in the same system.
RFCs manage the communication process, parameter transfer and error handling.

BAPI-Business ApplicationProgramInterface

RFC-Remote Function call
ALE-Application liniking and enabling

In " XI"
IDOC ---> Will be used to sending data in Async mode ...
It is very standard and for better performance Async case
RFC --- > Function module and general will be used to make call to function
sending the function (XI has RFC adapter)
BAPI ---> Other version of RFC (Objected oriented) mostly we will use for Sync
calls (Mostly in XI using proxies we will call BAPI's)
I hope this will answer your question

Upgrade impact on ALE, IDOC, RFC & XI
Hi all
We are having SAP R/3 4.6c and planning to upgrade ECC 6.0. Please tell me what are impacts on ALE, IDOC, RFC & XI integrations.
Thanks in Advance.
RajuDuring Upgrade...
ALE : ALE Customer Distribution Model ajustments due to changes in underlying structures and fields in Idoc Segments
We need to adjust the CDM as to adopt these to new ECC6.0 enviroment.
IDOC : Many of the new IDOCS are not released by SAP hence it happens that these IDOCs get stucked in ALE Communication layer and hence we need to see that IDOC's in use or to be used are released by SAP.
SAP supports these release issues ...
Also check the Message Control Settings which needs to be checked and verified during upgrade..
Interface Mappings : - IDOC to Non SAP systems..Proper rights access should be checked...
Authorisations, Access rights for Directories ...
These are the main areas which you should look upon and rest of the things will be known to you once your Business Process testing will start
Thanks and Regards

Remote Function Call:
RFC is an SAP interface protocol. Based on CPI-C, it considerably simplifies the programming of communication processes between systems.
RFCs enable you to call and execute predefined functions in a remote system - or even in the same system.
RFCs manage the communication process, parameter transfer and error handling.

Application Link Enabling:Means of creating and operating distributed applications.
The purpose of Application Line Enabling is to guarantee a distributed, but integrated, R/3 installation. This involves business-controlled message exchange using consistent data across loosely linked SAP applications. Applications are integrated using synchronous and asynchronous communication and not using a central database.
Application Link Enabling comprises the following three layers:
Application services , Distribution services , Communication services.
Intermediate document (IDoc) container for exchanging data between R/3, R/2 and non-SAP systems. ALE uses IDocs to exchange data between logical systems. Non-SAP systems can use IDocs as the standard interfacefor data transfer.
IDocs are created when message types and (object) methods are distributed. The message type is the format in which the data for a specific business process is transferred.
Electronic Data Interchange.
Electronic exchange of structured data, such as business documents, between domestic and international business partners that use different hardware, software and communication services. For this purpose, the data involved is formatted according to predefined standards.
In addition to this, the SAP ALE technology is available for data exchange within a company.

About ALE,Idoc, EDI
sir,
what is the purpose of ALE,Idoc and EDI, what is the difference and how they will useful for sap
suggest meHi
can anyone send me the good links for EDI concepts.explain me a bit about the creation process .
EDI is described as the interchange of structured data according to agreed message standards between computer systems, by electronic means. Structured data equates to a simple and direct method of presenting the data content of a document. The method of ensuring the correct interpretation of the information by the computer system is defined by the EDI standard."
EDI is a technique used to communicate business transactions between computer systems of different companies and organizations. Note that sometimes the EDI mechanism deployed at a company is often used to interface to other systems within the same organization."

ALE/IDOC and RFC/BAPI Integration Scenarios with SAP DS for ESA v3
Hi,
we are planning two PoCs of Integration Plattforms. One of our major requirement set is SAP Integration into our existing SOA.
Because we also have R/3 4.7 Systems in production, we are planning to test ALE/IDOC and RFC/BAPI Integration scenarios with these Integration Plattforms.
My question is:
We are looking for are smart solution to get a SAP Test Environment, where we can test ALE/IDOC und RFC/BAPI Integration scenarios.
It is possible to do this with SAP DS for ESA v3 or shall we better use IDES for that purpose?
Best regards,
StevenHi Abhishek,
This is our scenario. We are doing an integration of SAP HR r/3 system with the CRM system. We need housing information details of the employees which we have in custom infotype 9310 in SAP HR system and we need those details in the CRM system. So am planning out for an ALE/IDOC approach for the integration and gonna maintain the 9310 details in a custom table. In the CRM system, we gonna build a BOL layer for accessing the 9310 details. Also i'm preparing a HLD for this process. I wanna read and go through few same HLD's before i submit my proposal to my client. Please suggest me and help me out.
Thanks in advance.

Differences between rfc and ale/idoc.
hi ..
will u please send the differences between rfc and ale/idoc's.Hi,
Please reward with points if helpful................
ALE is SAP proprietary technology that enables data communications between two or more SAP R/3 systems and/or R/3 and external systems. There are three layers in ALE system: application services, distribution services, and communication services.
For communication services, ALE performs a Remote Function Call (RFC) using the port definition and RFC destination specified by the customer model. RFC is used to communicate between applications of different systems in the SAP environment includes connections between SAP systems as well as between SAP systems and non-SAP systems. Remote Function Call (RFC) is the standard SAP interface for communication between SAP systems. The RFC calls a function to be executed in a remote system.
Means of creating and operating distributed applications.
The purpose of Application Line Enabling is to guarantee a distributed, but integrated, R/3 installation. This involves business-controlled message exchange with consistent data across loosely linked SAP applications.
Application integration is achieved not via a central database, but via synchronous and asynchronous communication.
Application Link Enabling comprises the following three layers:
application services
distribution services
communication services
Two Development Models
Distribution using BAPIs
Distribution using Message type
The programming model "Distribution using message types" contains the definitions of message types and IDoc types and the ABAP code for processing inbound and outbound IDocs.
Defining message types and IDoc types:
If you want to create message type enhancements for master data distribution, you also have to create a new message type for each enhancement.
The ALE interface does not allow you to create different segment data for different IDoc types for the same message type.
Writing ABAP code:
Outbound Processing
Inbound Processing
You can find information on other ALE functions under:
Master Data Distribution
Communicating with Non-R/3 Systems
1. The Remote Function Call facility allows you to call an R/3 Function module on a remote machine.
2. To communicate between two R/3 Systems and also with an External System. External Application program also can call these function module for integration.
3. RFC or sRFC - Synchronous RFC
aRFC - Asynchronous RFC
tRFC - Transactional RFC
qRFC - Queued RFC (I.e. Serialization of tRFC)
Types of RFC Call
Synchronous
CALL FUNCTION Func Destination Dest
CALL FUNCTION func DESTINATION 'NONE' ...
CALL FUNCTION func DESTINATION BACK' ...
Asynchronous
CALL FUNCTION func STARTING NEW TASK taskname
PERFORMING form ON END OF TASK
RECEIVE RESULTS FROM FUNCTION func

Changes to customer search and Pull RFC [ALE/Idoc's]
Hi All,
I'm having a scenario as above in my project regarding the ALE/Idocs:
Customer Reference Server(CRS) is the Database through which the data is pulled. At present whenever customer wants the data it is pulled by the RFC method from CRS, now we must change it and pull the data through ALE/Idoc method that means we must trigger the Idoc whenever the customer pulls the records from the CRS. We must remove the RFC method entirely and implement the Idoc method.
If possible please provide me the logic for the same how to implement the Idoc method.
Waiting for your early response.
Thanks in advance

Hi,
I can see the ALE IDOC configurations at many places . Whats the process to send an IDOC to External Non-SAP System?
Does it differ much??
Please explain the steps.Hi,
Pushing the IDOC from SAP to External:
IDOC are SAP specifc data structure. Only SAP understands IDOCS natively. Normall what you can do is write a process that maps the IDOC to the format the recieving system is looking for. ie: flat file etc... Or if the external system can be coded to understand the IDOC structure, you could put a flat file with this structure to be read by teh external system.
Pulling from the External system:
Usin connectors, the external system can call a BAPi or RFC function module that can create IDOCS and pass the data to the external system using the IDOC structure.
thanks.
