Alert! Apple web security- a scam?

Recently I keep getting a pop up window that says "To help protect your computer, Apple Web Security have detected Trojans and ready to remove them." From the "Apple Security Center" (?), it says my computer is infected with 65 viruses. and 18 critical threads.Of course, I can click on their icon to repair these. Is this a scam? Ive never heard of this "center" and dont think my apple IMac G5 is infected. Any free way to find out?

Of course it's a scam.  (The malware authors badly overplayed those malware counts, too, but I digress.)
Where's the pop-up arising?  Specific web sites, or all over the web?  (More than a few web sites have been breached lately, but then there are a number of sites serving up malware.)
You'll want to look at loading a Flash-blocking tool into your browser, disabling popups in whatever browser you're using, and you'll likely want to disable Java in the browser, too.
As a general rule, do not authorize the installation of proffered downloaded tools from any source other than from Apple.  This includes the notorious "required video codec" from a web site purporting to show videos.  (Legitimate video sites will almost always use either Flash or H.264 for video, and you have those.)  And yes, the MacDefender stuff.
(Yes, there are many download packages that are legitimate, but the usual sorts of freebies around can also be Trojans.  If you're not sure, look around for feedback before downloading the package.  Or look to use the Mac App Store as a source, or another curated source.)
So-called Trojans ("Trojan Horses") are easy to implement on Mac OS X and on most other operating systems.  Get somebody to download your malware package, and get them to enter the privileged password to authenticate it, and (as a malware author) you're good to go for whatever you're planning.

If you haven't downloaded anything or clicked on any links in the web page, then simply delete the email message from your email program.  If you have clicked on something then you may have infected your computer with a trojan.  In that case see the following:

If you discover a trojan program is running on your computer then look to the following information for assistance:
    1. A recent discussion on the Apple Support Communities: MacDefender Trojan.

Removing strange software can be a task.  The following outlines various ways of uninstalling software:
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a Startup item or a Log In item.  Startup items are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the Delete [-] button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, Easy Find, instead.  Download Easy Find at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Note that you must have this software installed before you install software you may need to uninstall.  Uninstallers won't work if you install them after the fact.  Here is a selection:
    AppZapper
    Automaton
    Hazel
    CleanApp
    Yank
    SuperPop
    Uninstaller
    Spring Cleaning
Look for them and others at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
For more information visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on removing software and dealing with spyware and malware.
After removing all the components of the software you may have to restart the computer to fully disable the software.  This will be the case when removing software that has installed a daemon.  After the daemon has been removed you need to restart the computer to stop the daemon.  Alternatively, you can kill the daemon process using the Terminal application or Activity Monitor.

I have make lot of tests with no result, I haven'treceive any alert mail.
how can I make a test alert or generate an web security alert?

  • Warning System spameater Unable to connect to Cisco Web Security Service.; URL Filter...

My C670 ESA's have been throwing these alerts intermittently for the past few days, anyone else seeing them?
    The Warning message is:
Unable to connect to Cisco Web Security Service.
URL Filtering will not work correctly.
Please verify all network, proxy and firewall settings.
    Connection to "v2.sds.cisco.com" failed.
The last error seen on this connection: "Request failed with code: 28 (Connection time-out)"
    Version: 8.5.6-092
Looks like it is open on port 443 and currently up.  Hitting it with a browser gives me:
    https://v2.sds.cisco.com/
After an error or two they go away and appear OK.
Checking the logs I don't see a way to verify URL lookups are working, is there a way?
Also, I setup URL filtering six months ago and had it set to only trigger on (-10)-(-9.5) and saw about an 80% false positive.  It has improved over the past six months drastically but still catching mostly advertising URLs and allowing all phishing URLs right through.  I've yet to see it block a phishing URL.
    Jason

After lots of trial and error, I was able to eliminate this problem.  What I wound up doing is defining the XE service again in the listener.ora file:
    SID_LIST_LISTENER =
      (SID_LIST =
        (SID_DESC =
          (SID_NAME = XE)
          (ORACLE_HOME = C:\ProgramData\oraclexe\app\oracle\product\11.2.0\server)
I know that typically you should not have to do this, especially since I already had defined DEFAULT_SERIVCE_LISTENER = (XE) at the bottom of the listener.ora file.  Explicitly defining the XE service in the listener.ora file allows the listener to find it while the system is running under the Cisco AnyConnect VPN.  The only hiccup I found by doing this is that the XE service is discovered twice by the listener when the system is NOT running under the Cisco AnyConnect VPN.  It still works OK.  The listener just seems to ignore the repeated definition of the XE service (see output below):
    C:\ProgramData\oraclexe\app\oracle\product\11.2.0\server\bin>lsnrctl service
    LSNRCTL for 32-bit Windows: Version 11.2.0.2.0 - Production on 13-JUN-2013 10:03:15
    .......(omitted output).......
    Service "XE" has 2 instance(s).
Instance "XE", status UNKNOWN, has 1 handler(s) for this service...
        Handler(s):
          "DEDICATED" established:0 refused:0
             LOCAL SERVER
Instance "xe", status READY, has 1 handler(s) for this service...
        Handler(s):
          "DEDICATED" established:0 refused:0 state:ready
             LOCAL SERVER
    Service "XEXDB" has 1 instance(s).
Instance "xe", status READY, has 1 handler(s) for this service...
        Handler(s):
          "D000" established:0 refused:0 current:0 max:1022 state:ready
             DISPATCHER <machine: DEV-M-137GF, pid: 5544>
    (ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=tcp)(HOST=DEV-M-137GF.paychex.com)(PORT=58257))
    The command completed successfully
If anyone has a cleaner solution for this problem, please let me know.  Otherwise, I am moving forward with what I did.
    Thanks.....Paul

  • Ask your question.APPLE WEB SITE IS SLOW

I'm on apple support page,I ask a question,10sec later the page comes up. I click on a question and 5 sec later the tiny circular spins letting me know it's looking for the page and then 5 sec later the page opens. Anything and every thing I do the apple web site takes about 10sec or longer every time I click go.
A lot of times if I click twice and some times just once I get a pop up telling me Apple is not responding.
I thought it was verizon service but I just got charter and it's the same way. Any Ideas??
I just went down this page to find out where the best place on apple is to put my question and I clicked the box WiFi and 5 sec later the check mark showed up.

I actualy had Verizon shut off and removed there security from my p/c and I'm in awe. My p/c is fast and I no longer have trouble with turning pages. I was wrong about charter.com it's who I have now and I'm not haveing trouble with slow int and clicking on the next web page is fast.
At first it was the same thing w/charter but I still had verizon. I wanted to see if charter was better before I got rid of Verizon but I got speed only after I called Verizon and had them shut me off and then I got rid of there security.
    I HOPE THIS HELPS.

Forgot the answers to the Apple ID security questions. How do I reteive or change them? Yes, I tried the FAQ and everything on the web, doesn't help because I don't seem to have a recovery email address either.
HELP! I just added 30 CHF from an iTunes card to my Apple ID, but without the swcurity questions I cannot make purchases :-(

Welcome to the Apple Community Els-deL
If you don't know your password, don't know your security questions and don't have a rescue address or don't receive a reset email, you should contact AppleCare who will initially try to assist you with a reset email or if unsuccessful will pass you to the security team to reset your security questions for you.
If you are in a region that doesn't have international telephone support try contacting Apple through iTunes Store Support.

  • Please Alert Apple Devotees of Problems

Steve Jobs says he "Loves Apple customers". I believe that, I hope I am not wrong to do so. But this alarm problem on the iPhone has not been dealt with in love. WHY wasn't it posted on the Apple web site as a warning? I missed a VERY important appointment this morning because I overslept – my alarm didn't go off and I was not aware of the difficulty.
Apple keep me on board by being open and honest like in a family.
Is this too much to ask?
    David

I feel I am getting slapped for this thread. You are slapping an Apple Devotee. I head up an organisation we serve thousands (though I know we do not serve millions, upon millions), when we hear how we can do something better we rejoice, not get grumpy. We believe the motivation is to help us to do better. We are grateful for that.
This morning I let approx 150 people down because I didn't make the appointment. I was trying to make their lives better and I failed. I felt gutted. So have a heart.
What I am asking for pure and simple is a way of letting folks know there is a problem. I don't surf for Apple problems randomly. My request is pure and simple:
"If there is a problem that could have significant impact (alarms are significant) please can Apple let us know when they know?"
As a devotee I use the Apple web site daily and also iTunes most days. I think there must be a way to alert "card carrying Apple users" so we do not suffer under it. *What is unrealistic about that?* A simple header: *iPhone Alarm problem* with a link would be suffice. I am genuine when I say that I believe Steve Jobs does love his Apple clients. I think he does care. I enjoy the whole Apple ethos. I'm saying "Hey we can go one better here!" This is a way to manifest that. So don't get heavy, I'm your brother

  • Message from Apple Web Centre

On 30 May 10.00pm (AET) when I open the Safari, suddenly it came up a message from Apple Web Centre and ask me to delete some files because they got inflection or virus. I didn't do it. Is someone got the same request?

Do not do anything with that - it is NOT from Apple. It is a scam and a trojan. Get rid of the window. Do not download anything. If it downloads itself, check your computer and delete it. And read these:

  • Downloads for different products e.g., Crawler Web Security won't take

I attempted to download different toolbars and products such as from Crawler's Spyware and Web Security without any luck. It goes through the usual set-up windows and a window opens up to say that the downloads have been successfully completed. I cannot find them!

Does the ext directory have the php_oci8.dll? In the original steps the PHP dir is renamed. In the given php.in the extension_dir looks like it has been updated correctly. Since PHP distributes php_oci8.dll by default I reckon there would be a very good chance that the problem was somewhere else. Since this is an old thread I don't think we'll get much value from speculation.

  • How do I reset my apple id security question with out a rescue email

How do I reset my apple id security question with out a rescue email?

You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions; ways of contacting them include clicking here and picking a method for your country, phoning AppleCare and asking for the Account Security team, and filling out and submitting this form.
They wouldn't be security questions if they could be bypassed without Apple verifying your identity.

Hi! So I haven't used iTunes in a few months but I just got an iTunes gift card and want to make a purchase. iTunes redeemed it just fine but now that I want to make a purchase I am having problems.
