Alert "beep" sounds repeatedly without prompting

greetings to all...
a recent problem of mine on my iBook G4 1.2GHz. after a period of time on, it will suddenly start sounding the alert beep repeatedly, as if someone was clicking outside an alert box constantly. it's very strange and doesn't stop until i restart the computer (or i can just turn the sound down). the apps i have open are usually safari, itunes, amsn (msn client), word... and that's about it. no hardcore processing.
i'm guessing there's a problem with the soundcard... does anyone have any ideas as to why this might occur?
thanks in advance for your help!

You might try running the Apple Hardware Test. Some beeps may be due to failing RAM. If so, you will get an error code indicating failed RAM. If you have an extra RAM stck, you can repeat the AHT with that one and see if the problem goes away.
Good luck!

    HELP.....A bit at wits end!
My 3 year old Tecra A9-S9018v bought new, is a pretty good performer. Well, except for the letter "r/R" key that repeats infinitum whenever I type certain letters or numbers (y, 3, 5, 7, 8, 9, 0 and ALL symbols). The ONLY way to stop it for the moment is to hit 'enter', 'the space bar' or similar keys. Naturally this is frustrating!!
I notice things started when I upgraded to Adobe Reader 9 (a bugged & problematic installation) and it was compounded by a Firefox upgrade. In frustration I dumped 9, reinstalled 8, then everything was fine.
In addition to the onset of this drama, there was a fast repetitive beeping at every startup....which also began with the upgrade of Adobe 9 and went away when I reinstalled 8.
When 10 came out I reinstalled 9 and the repeating/stuck "r/R" AND beeping at startup both returned. Changing back to 8 did not help this time, neither did upgrading to 10. In the interim I upgraded Firefox also, which may have compounded the problem.
I've looked all over creation, explored many avenues and options in attempts to fix things....but this time I can't fix either of these issues! The system has been wiped clean and the basics reinstalled. I have not installed any Adobe software as of yet, but the problems are still present. It was suggested that I replace the keyboard, but I'm not convinced that would solve the problem and what a waste that would be!

    Hi yiorgos --
You're not alone; others have reported the same problem as you. To my knowledge, there has been no reported solution, yet.

  • Beeping sounds when running photoshop CC with open files...

    Hi,
I started gettting randing but re-curring beeping sounds from Photoshop CC whenever I open a file (any file). While files are open I keep getting this annoying beeping sound repeatedly. I have tested my computer to see if it's some other issue but it's directly associated with Photoshop and I can't figure out what it is. I thought at first it's going to be my hard-drive or something as I've had similar situations like this before where I had to replace the drive. The only problem here is it doesn't happen with any other app except photoshop.
Memory / resource ussage at launch starts at almost 800k. When 1-2 files are open, memory / resource usage jumps to over 1,100,000K within minutes. If I add total adobe resources being used, it is higher than the 1,500,000K mark. This includes their multiple instances of CF helper, Creative cloud.
I also never saw the "Photoshop-node.exe *32" process running before until last night, taking up 40K, (Evented I/O for v8 Javascript)
    Please help, thanks!

Have tested further. These r the  things I noticed.
    1. Photoshop fails to initiate error message shows just for a few seconds
then starts normally. This usually happens when I try to open a file
    without having photoshop open.
    2. Trying sone random actions leads to further photoshop errors, crashing
or failing to perform task requested or locking up.
    3. On one file in particular, while trying to save it failed then managed
to save it and got error message with photoshop relaunch request. The
problem starts here. I relaunch photoshop to avoid file open issues. Open
the file it crashed in and get the annoying beeps almost like the file or
elements on the file are corrupt. Qhile file is open, I get the beeps. I
rebuild the file using a new file. I finallu get to the grouped vector
paths and upon attempting to drag, I get the beeps. I copy the paths over
and now the new file starts beeping as well. I close the old file and
beeping happens less often. I continue on the new file and randomly get the
beeps (sometimes 2 sometimes more beeps)... I delete tje grouped vector
paths and since have not had the problem. It seems to have been path
related. I read in other posts how path properties are an issue atm and
have not been fixed, this may just be a continuance of that problem.
    Cheers

  • Alert beeps and lots of "trust"

I have already noticed that many users complain here about alert beeps that can't be stopped. That's my complaint, also, but I don't have any of the 10 or 12 reasons that others have found that could cause the beeps. I can't see any pattern for the beeps. They happen with no Safari launched, no iOS device connected and when I am signed out of iCloud. I do not ever use any of the following:
    Nimbuzz
    FaceTime or other messenger app
    Messages
    Email notification
    Notifications for Safari
    Twitter
    FaceBook
To avert the occasional reader who loves to reply here with "So what's your question", my question is how to kill the alert beeps other than never use sound.
After the last incidence of an alert sound, I checked Console and noticed 123 entries that contain the word "trust" in less than 30 minutes. Is that about iPhone or just a coincidence (I do also have the perpetual "Trust" nag from connecting iPhone, even when I choose "Trust", but that just puts me in the huge crowd of iPhone users with that annoyance. Here is the System Log for a 28 minute period that had at least one alert sound around 3:50 p.m. (I'm not in your time zone)….

Please no reply from "Meg St._Clair" who will probably tell me to read the manual for Mac mini and OS 10.8.

    Try a restart.
Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • High-pitched beep/sound during sleep and shut down modes

I just wish to check whether is it normal that there's high pitched beep (not very loud but can be heard in a quiet room) which seems to be from the LED or AC Adapter during sleep mode. The beep sounds continuous when the computer has been shut down or in off mode while the main plug of where the ac adapter is connected to is still on. Is this normal? My computer works fine. Battery is charging fine. I just want check whether is this normal. It is has been like that ever since I bought my computer on March 2012.
HP Pavilion dm4-3005tx Entertainment Notebook PC

    Hello Huanwei,
It appears that you can hear a "high pitched beep" coming from the notebook while it's in sleep mode or even off, when the power adapter is plugged in and "on". I will try to help you with this.
Normally, this should not happen. Beeping from a computer may happen during start up a few times to indicate components enabling, but any constant beeping or being while the computer is off shouldn't happen.
Does this occur, if the AC adapter is not connected to the notebook when it is in sleep mode or off? Do you only notices this, in a specific location? (office, etc.)
I would suggest, depending on the setup of things. Taking the notebook with no AC to another location in the house. A quiet one, make sure your not near any other electronics (no watches or cell phones either) let the notebook sleep and see if you hear the beeping. If not, then power it off and test again. If no beeping, this is good and the notebook is fine.
Repeat that same test with the power adapter connected ( again no other electronics around you). Listen while it is "sleeping" and off to see if you can hear the beeping again.
If you do disconnect the AC from the notebook , but leave that connected to the wall and take the notebook out of that location, go back to see if you can hear beeps again. If you do it could be the AC adapter. If you don't then it could be an issue with that only when it's connected.
If there was no beeping when the AC was connected in this "testing location", then I would guess it is something else within the house that is beeping (we have seen that before). In which case you'd have nothing to worry about in regard to your notebook.
Let me know where the above leads.
Thank you for posting on the HP Forums.

i'm having trouble with installing a 8g kit in my late 2009 mac mini. when the parts are installed all i get is a beeping sound, is there any way to get around this?

What is the source & link to this 8 GB kit please?
Can you count the beeps or flashes?
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable
In addition to the beeps, on some computers the power LED will flash a corresponding number of times plus one. The LED will repeat the sequence after approximately a 5-second pause. The tones are only played once.
Note: In this case, a flash is considered to be 1/4 second or 250 ms or greater in length.

  • How do you lower the volume on the dictation beep sound?

    Hi there,
I like using the new iPad's built in dictation feature. But when I use it, I find that the alert beep it makes when you start and stop is quite loud, and I don't know how to turn the volume down. All of the other sounds on the my iPad are turned down.
    Thanks!

I've tried this, but it doesn't work. Does anyone not notice the disparity in the volume of the dictation beep and all other alert sounds on your iPad? It's a loud beep. I have my alert sounds turned right down (still audible, but very low.)
    (But thanks Diavonex!)

  • X200 black screen and beep sound when power module is plugged on and off

    Hello,
I have the following problem. Today I turned on my X200 without power module, and when I plugged in power - the screen starts to flicker. This was not before, and I am using my laptop only during a week.
After that I turned on the laptop with power module, it was OK, but when I plug out and plug in power module, computer makes "beep" sound and becomes black for a second. Is that normal behavior?
    Thank you!

does your battery hold a full charge. is it in good shape.  is your machine under warranty. you could try support, but they're probably just gonna tell you to open a service claim.  another thing, did it always do this or is this something that just started. did you just download any updates and this started right after. or did it just start doing this for no reason.

  • IPhoto 9 plus all photos in finder are making constant fast beep sounds, flashing & frozen.  What happened

Few days ago Mac Mail started making fast, loud, continuous beeping sounds while I was writing a long document. The Mail program started flashing, "vibrating," and froze. I had to force quit and lost that email (right - I should have saved it, but didn't).  I tried to re-create the document in Pages and the same thing happened.  Then I tried to recreate it in Word.  Same thing. (may sound nuts to just keep trying new programs, but this was an urgent document.  Figured I could get it done, then focus on fixing the problem)
When I finally got things working again by re-starting multiple times and using Disk Utility, I evenutally opened iPhoto. After working with that program for several hours, I tried to use "share, "which creates an email with a jpeg. The same beeping and flashing started again. I had to shut down the computer. Next day everything seemed OK.  No problems for 3 days.
Tonight I was working with several programs, all doing fine.  Then I opened iPhoto and it immediately started the fast beeping and wouldn't let me access any of my MANY photos. Had to force quit. So I tried to access photos I saved in Finder.  Every saved photo (I have hundreds in Finder) would beep and flash continuously when I clicked on it's icon, even without opening it.
I can't find anything online about this situation. Some articles and forums talk about 3 beeps having a certain meaning. That's not what this is. It's continuous loud rhythmic beeps, flashing and I can barely shut down the program when that's going on.
Background: right before this started, my HD was very full and giving me warnings, so I deleted numerous file.  It's possible I could have deleted something that should NOT have been deleted. I also started in PRAM mode.  If I deleted something, I don't know how to tell what's missing. Also, iPhoto is very full and gave me warnings not to add photos. My Mac is 5 years old and running pretty fast. I installed Mountain Lion several months ago.
Has anyone experienced this? Help!! I don't want to lose my photos!

Running with a very full HD is very, very bad.
OS X needs about 10 gigs of hard drive space for normal OS operations - things like virtual memory, temporary files and so on. Without this space your Mac will slow down as the OS hunts for space on the disk, files will be fragmented, also slowing things down, apps will crash and the risk of data corruption - that is damage to your files, photos, music - increases exponentially.
Then, frankly, telling us you deleted "numerous file" but don't know what you deleted, really means that we can't help.
It's very likely that your Library is damaged from being run on an overfull disk. But you'll need at least as muh disk space again for repair it.
So, you need to get an external HD or two, move some data off that machine to make room. You may also need to reinstall your OS as you're not sure what you have deleted. After you've got your Os working you can try fix iPhoto.

  • Issue with Scanners beep sounds

    Hi,
I have an issue with scanners beeping. I have done everything as suggested in SAP Note 371838 and i am successfull in getting the no of beeps on the SAP Screen but the issue is the scanner is not beeping.
The model of the scanner is Intermec CK3. I would like to know will there be any settings that we need to do to map the no of beeps on SAP Screen to the beeps from scanner.
    Thanks in Advance.
