Alert sounds I don't recognize

I'm getting alert sounds in the background I don't recognize. None of the apps in  my dock bounce up and down for attention. I can't associate it with any particular action. Usually it's a double click sound (like a tick tock or flipflop). The one that sounds like a camera shutter is creepy. They are not my Mail or  Calendar alerts.
How do I trace the source?
Thanks
MacBook Pro
OS 10.9.5

Log out or restart the computer without launching any applications. If you still hear the sounds, then it's likely that one of your login items is causing the problem. Select the Login Items tab in the Users & Groups pane of System Preferences. Delete any items that you don't recognize. If you're not sure which ones to delete, double-click each to test it.

  • Alert Sounds don't sound

After upgrading to OS 10.4.3 my alert sounds can no longer be heard. I checked Sound preferences (both Sound Effects and Ouput) and everything seems appropriately setup.
No test sound is played when a new alert sound is chosen. The Help button does not generate any help.
iTunes and QuickTime are audible as before. Feedback is provided when volume changes are made.
There are other posts about sounds and OS 10.4.3 recently so there may be something in common.

I am having a very similar trouble. My email alert sound stopped several days ago. Tonight I tried to fix it by going through the Sound control panel. I noticed that the "Play alerts and sound effects through:" pulldown was greyed out. I clicked on the Help icon, and a blank help window came up. I closed it and tried again, and the window wouldn't even come up.
The Garage Band fix didn't work. I haven't tried a PRAM reset, because I thought we didn't have to do that with OS X. I'll try it in a minute.
Over the past couple of weeks I've noticed a progressive degredation in my system, too. Simply opening a Finder window can set the beach ball spinning. Safari used to autofill commonly used blanks on forms, and it stopped doing that. Cookies have been disappearing too. I used to be able to turn on cookies long enough to get logged into my favorite web sites, and then turn the cookies off. Stored cookies would exist with my password data and I could browse my forums and shop without having the cookies turned on and accumulating unwanted ones. Now I find that I have to leave them on and constantly retype the password info.
Any chance that we might be looking at an OS X bug, or even worse- the first of the OS X viruses?

  • Alerts sounds are not working after upgrading to iOS 7.1.2

    Hi,
I've noticed that all the alerts sounds are not working anymore after upgrading my iPhone 4S to iOS 7.1.2
I’ve reviewed similar posts regarding the same issue; and it seems this is a common issue in iPhone 4S when upgrade to iOS 7.1.2.
Apple, please Advise if there anything I can do to resolve the issue especially that my work deepens on the push emails and alerts that requires prompt response.

    I got this issue resolved.
It caused due to some dirt in the charger slot; such dirt caused the phone to assume as if it is connected to a car kit and that is why it does not produce any sound except the Ringer and the Alarm.
It has been fixed by cleaning the charger slot by toothbrush! with some
    drops of a cleaner.
Do not do it by yourself, as it might be a risk; rather, let it to be done by an expert.

  • Computer AND iTunes don't recognize my iPod touch.  Comp thinks it is a camera.  iTunes won't bring up devices at all.  I've already uninstalled iTunes and QT and reinstalled after problem that happened when I updated iTunes... getting beyond P/Oed!!!

Computer AND iTunes don't recognize my iPod touch.  Comp thinks it is a camera or something.  iTunes won't bring up devices at all.  I've already uninstalled iTunes and QT and reinstalled after problem that happened when I updated iTunes - updated iTunes completely demolished my computer's ability to recognize the sound card and computer had NO sound at all.  I had to uninstall iTunes, QT, AND my sound card and reinstall them all.  Sound worked fine, but now I can't sync my iPod.  Computer recognizes that "something" is hooked up (thinks it might possibly be a camera) and I get that "open with" window.  In "my computer" it shows that there is an "iPod" connected, but it is pictured as a camera.  In iTunes my username is no longer appearing (although account info is there) and NO devices whatsoever get listed.  There is nothing wrong with my USB ports or cable.  And of course Apple won't help anyone unless you pay them to. ... I am getting beyond P/Oed!!!  You pay hundreds for a product and all you get are headaches with their stupid bug infested software and no support at all.
Can anyone out there help me clean up this unbelievable mess Apple and iTunes has created in my computer?
    Thank you.

After three completely wasted days trying to figure all of this out I finally got it fixed - on my own - by reading dozens and dozens of rogue posts in indie forums from people that refuse to dish out money to have a company TRY and advise possible fixes on their own glitches.
(here's a novel idea - fix the glitches Apple.  Or - don't send out updates filled with bugs in the first place)
Everything (several applications) had to be uninstalled in a very specific order and then restarted , then it all had to be verified with manual deletions of leftovers, and emptying the recycle bin, then another restart, then iT had to be reinstalled again and the system restarted again, and two more update downloads. Holy!!!
I love my little iPod touch, but I honestly must say, when this kind of thing happens (and it has several times now when I try to deal with iTunes or Apple), it makes me want to flush it down the toilet.

  • Hi. when I'm texting, if the person i'm texting sends a text before i've sent mine, i dont get an alert sound and the message only arrives after mine is sent even though i may know its there waiting. I didnt have this problem till i updated software. 4s

Hi all. Hope someone can help with this infuriating issue that I didn't have until updating. If a friend texts me while I'm texting them, I don't get an alert sound and the message stays outside waiting for me to send and finish. When I send, my friends message comes in but ive probably gone to home position and missed it. waiting for replies till all hours.

I think the problem lays with Last.fm. I had the same exact problem as you. In your processes screen, end the task "lastfmhelper.exe" Last.fm still scrobbles. The tracks don't skip, although I notice there is still a bit of a lag in the first part of the song - but if you can deal with that, no skipping. I think you will have to end that task everytime you boot up your computer, or uninstall last.fm completely until they fix it; it is a bug in their software, as opposed to iTunes.

  • How do I create a new alert sound?

In OS 9 it was obvious how to create a custom alert sound, but I don't see how to do it in Tiger or Snow Leopard. Any suggestions?

spudnuty- this works on my MBP Snow Leopard but not on my G5 iMac. In the Library folder_Alerts it will play in iTunes as an audio file when I click on it. But in my Alerts window, it is silent, unless I play another sound. Then when hit my custom sound it plays the previous installed sound.

  • Need to have an alert sound when the program I'm working in times out

I work at the Univ of Utah. We have a program that times out after 40 mins. I've been told by the campus IT folks that Firefox does not supply an alert sound option for this type of situation. Is this information correct? If not, where do I find the option to have an alert sound?

    Thanks! - worked great!!!...
I checked out the onStatus function in the help documentation
before I posted the thread, but didn't understand how to use it.
Based on your code below, I still kind of don't (even though the
    code works fine)...
Can you kind of explain, line by line, what's going on in the
little tidbit of code that you wrote. That way I'm not just fishing
for help blindly, and I can actually learn something so I don't
have to bother people in these forums in the future (and maybe help
    others!)
Thanks again, Leo - much appreciated!!!...

  • How do I get rid of or change that twitter alert sound in Mountain Lion?

I would love to change the twitter alert sound in 10.8 to something more pleasant, but I don't see anywhere to change it. Maybe I could replace the sound somewhere in the system files?
Might just have to disable alert sounds for it but I do want something to play......

That is the general alert sound, not seeing anywhere to change the twitter alert sound which isn't listed under the sound preferences.

  • Alert sounds

I have an alert sound, sometimes out of the blue, for seemingly no reason
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but it is driving me crazy!
How do I figure out what Mac is trying to tell me?
I don't pay much attention when I am doing something or opening something to the sounds. But this one just happens every once in a while. I checked the "built-in" sounds in my settings and cannot find the actual sound, It is just like, a donk sound, I guess.

Have you checked your comp clock chime settings?
    System Preferences>Date&Time>Clock
Check to see if Announce the time is enabled. If so, click on the Customize Voice button to determine if Purr is selected.

  • Right click in safari 4.0.3 always causing alert sound

Hi, I've just come across this issue, whenever I right click directly in any web page of safari 4.0.3 (by directly I mean, without any text selected, and not in the input field), an alert sound appears. I've tried checking my mouse settings, repairing disk permissions, restoring defaults of keyboard shortcuts, uninstalling some recently installed software/apps, but none of these works. Yet if I right click with selected text or in input field or in any other application, there's no such issue. I wonder if this is a bug of safari 4.0.3 or what. And now I'm really frustrated and can't figure out what can be done to kick this alert sound away. Please help, thanks in advance.

is it only me? no one has the same issue?

  • Alert sounds for no apparent reason

Several times a day a get an alert sound. I think it is the "sosumi" alert. But nothing apparent occurs when it sounds. I don't get any new emails, nor do I get a window with any information, directions, warnings, or anything else.
    Any ideas?

Yep, I do have Skype, but I've had it for a long time. These alerts sounds started only recently.
You should still check it to make sure the alert sounds haven't somehow been changed or turned on (if previously off). You also need to check any other apps that you have running, including anything in System Preferences -> Accounts -> Login Items. See if any of those might have some kind of audible alert sounds.
Shouldn't an alert sound be accompanied by something on the monitor screen?
Not necessarily. Depends on what the developer of any particular app decides to do.

  • Can I change the 'delete song' Alert sound in iTunes?

My dog either has sensitive ears, or a sensitive disposition. Regardless of which it is, the alert sound produced by iTunes when I delete files affects him. He gets very upset, and won't settle down for five to ten minutes. I try to mute my sound when I delete files, but sometimes I forget.
Can I change the sound iTunes uses for the "Delete Alert"?
My dog thanks you for any assistance you can offer.
    Steve

    Ok Brannon,
You need to take a look at system prefs. Go to sound>sound effects.
You should see a whole list of alert sounds. Mine is set to funk, which is a dull and low 'thunk' sound. You might find one that your dog finds inoffensive. You can click on these and hear them. You can also choose where you them to play from. ie if you have iTunes blaring out of your hifi speakers, you can set your system alert sound to play thru your macs internal speakers. The best bit is that you can set the alert volume relative to the overall volume.
    I hope that helps you
Cheers, and woof woof wa-woof woof to your dog. Don't worry, he'll get it.

  • Mail loses it's alert sounds almost every time the system goes to sleep

I don't have a clue what's happening, but the alert sounds are restored when I quit mail and restart it. I've checked and determined that Sound is on when this happens and it doesn't get muted somehow. I leave Mail running all the time. This also happened in Lion but not in Snow Leopard. I've tried changing the Sound settings but if there is any change it doesn't last.

    Sometimes there are problems.
Somethings to try but probably won't help....
    1. Repair Disk Permissions
    2. Startup in Safe mode by holding down the "Shift" key....
    3. Reset the P Ram by holding down the "Command/Option/P/R" keys at the same time...
The above are standard items to do on any Mac from time to time.
I repair permissions at least once a month....
The other 2 periodically as they do straighten things out when they get out of whack....
    Thanks for the feedback.

  • Why am I not getting any alert sounds in Lion?

I just upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion 10.7.3 and find that I am not getting any alert sounds. Mail sounds work, voice notification [as in giving me the time on the hour and other spoken alerts] works, but simple things like trash emptying, taking items out of the dock or Finder side bar don't work at all.
I gone to System Prefs many times to try and tweak some things. Discovered that I had a lot of old Xounds sounds, so I deleted those. I'm at a real loss here folks, so if someone can point me in the right direction, I shall be forever thankful!

Have you got notifications muted ? Only notifications (including games) get muted, so the iPod and Videos apps, and headphones, still get sound.
Depending on what you've got Settings > General > Use Side Switch To set to (mute or rotation lock), then you can mute notifications by the switch on the right hand side of the iPad, or via the taskbar : double-click the home button; slide from the left; and it's the icon far left; press home again to exit the taskbar. The function that isn't on the side switch is set via the taskbar instead : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4085
