Alesis MultiMix problems

Hey all, I am using an Alesis MultiMix 8 (FireWire) with my G5 and I can't seem to get it to work properly. The unit worked well for a month or two, then I left the country for 6 months and unhooked everything. Yesterday I reconnected the kit, ran all the software updates, and the mixer is screwy. The mixer seems to hijack the internal volume control in the system and crank it up to 100%, which causes massive feedback even at the lowest control room volume setting on the mixer. I remember clearly that before I was able to adjust the system volume using the keyboard AND the control room volume on the mixer. Anyone have any ideas here? All firmware is up to date - all I can think is that the OSX update must have made something go screwy...

Nope, that isn't it. I have the control room outs going to the monitors and am not using zero latency monitoring, so the feedback loop shouldn't be there. I played with it a bit more last night and the problem was partly solved by changing the input on my receiver from Phono to Video - maybe the phono in doesn't expect a line input and gives it a little pre-amp or gain. Don't know - it sounds better now, but still not ideal. Thanks, though.

  • GB2 & Alesis MultiMix Firewire Problem

I just purchased an Alesis MultiMix Firewire mixer to use with Garageband 2.
As a mixer, everything works fine, apart from the firewire.
When I connect the mixer to my PowerBook G4 (10.3.9) via firewire, Garageband and Audio / MIDI Setup see the firewire mixer. I had no problem recording via the firewire connection. My problem is when I try to play back the Garageband recording through the mixer via firewire. The output is distorted and choppy.
Next I tried playing something that I recorded before I got the mixer (to determine if it's an input or output problem). This played back distorted and choppy.
Next I didn't use the mixer but routed the GarageBand's output through the PowerBook's built-in audio. It played fine.
I also tried a different firewire cable and powering both the mixer and computer up and down many times inbetween. Nothing changed.
So I know the problem has to do with the Garageband output through the mixer.
One thing I thought was curious was that the mixer worked at 24 bit and GarageBand works at 16 bit. Could this be the problem? I couldn't find any way to configure the mixer to work at 16 bit.
Anyways, any help would be very appreciated.
    Thanks,
    LeonD

Well I've been on the phone twice with Alesis today. They basically had me try all the things I tried on my own. At one point, they thought I had a defective unit so I brought it back and traded it for another one. The second one did sound a little better but it still was not useable.
One of the tech was using a 12" PB and said his worked. I tried with a 15" and 17" PB. I also have a 12" iBook. I tried that and it also didn't work.
Alesis is not giving up. They gave me one thing to try and said if it didn't work, to call back tomorrow. I actually live near Alesis and offered to bring my gear in and have them look at it first hand. They declined saying they weren't set up for that.
The oddest thing today was right before I called them the first time, I tried playing back via the mixer and it worked. I didn't believe it. I tried both GarageBand and Cubase. Then just to make sure, I shut everything down and started back up again. My problem was back and I haven't been able to make it work again.
    Recording shouldn't be this hard,

  • Problems Using Logic Express with Alesis Multimix 8

    Hi,
Does anybody have any experience of using the Alesis Multimix 8 USB with Logic Express 7.0.1? As far as I can tell the software is set up OK. The problem is that there is an awful amount of noise present on both the input and the output (sounds like inordinatley loud dither). The problem is also present on Garageband and iTunes but not with Cubase LE (bundled in with the Multimix).
I have searched and searched the internet for drivers for the Multimix but with no luck. At the moment I am just using the "core audio" USB codec drivers that are built in as I seem to have no other option.
Does anybody have any suggestions before I go ahead and buy another external audio interface? (got my eye on the new Behringer F-CONTROL AUDIO FCA202)

PS I am running OS X (10.3.9) on a G4 iBook (1.33 GHz, 1.25 GB RAM) and have done all the updates available for Logic Express 7.0(.1)

OK I understand it's helpful to others to post solutions should you find them so here goes:
It would seem that the problem is with the built in CODEC used by OS X. You can update using the drivers available at http://www.usb-codec.com
I used the demo version to see if it solved the problem which it did. However you need to buy the software to get rid of the annoying beep every 30 secs on the demo version. well worth it to get my hardware working properly though.

  • Alesis MultiMix 8 Firewire Problems

I recently bought a one of these interfaces and whenever I try and install the drivers from the cd it gave me, it doesn't start the installation process. Instead it spits out the cd without doing anything. I don't know what to do.

    Hey there!
I experienced the same thing last week with the installation CD of my Alesis Multimix 8. Strangely, the CD did load on my friend's Mac Mini Duo and we decided to transfer the CD's files to my MBP via Bluetooth.
BUT, you can go checkout the Alesis website and find the latest Multimix 8 drivers for MAC intel: http://www.alesis.com/index.php?id=58,62,0,0,1,0
As for installing Cubase LE, well you might have to find an alternative...
So you are not the only one to have that cd spitting problem with the MBP.

  • Adobe Audition CS6 and Alesis Multimix 8 Firewire multitrack problem

I have the Alesis Multimix 8 Firewire mixer and am using Adobe Audition CS6 for my recording program.
I'm trying to connect 4 microphones via XLR and have them run in individual channels in Audition but I can't get more than 2 to show up on the program even though I have 3 plugged in right now. On top of that, I have to run input 1 and input 2 as mono channels instead of stereo channels to get it to work at all.
I'm looking to do a Podcast with my set up, is there a better program to use to record and edit? Or am I missing a driver for Audition or the Multi Mix?
    Thanks!

Well, first the easy bit.  Microphones ARE mono devices so using mono channels is absolutely correct.
Beyond that, you mention drivers.  There are no special drivers for Audition but it is worth going to http://www.alesis.com/multimix8firewire to see if there are any driver updates for your mixer.
You don't mention what Operating System you're using but whichever it is, you should go to the Audio Setup page for Windows (i.e. not in Audition) and make sure it's detecting all the channels from the Alesis properly.  You may have to set the Alesis as your default audio device for this.
On the Edit/Preferences/Audio Hardware Setup menu in Audition, make sure you have the proper device type selected--I'd guess ASIO for a start.  Make sure your Alesis is selected as the default hardware.
On the Edit/Preferences/Audio Channel Mapping menu, make sure you can see all the channels from your Alesis.
Finally, on the Multitrack screen, set the Input for each track to be the appropriate channel from the Alesis.  If you're going to do this regularly, I recommend you get everything set up then save it as a Session template.
And I can't think of anything better than Audition for what you want to do...that's why it's used in thousands of radio stations around the world!

  • Audio Input Problems with Alesis MultiMix 8 USB Mixer

I have hooked up an Alesis MultiMix 8 USB mixer and condensor Microphone to my new iMac G5's USB port. When going into the Sound Control Panel my input slider for Audio in is grayed out and states that their are no input devices, (I chose the USB input device instead of internal mic.), yet it does pic up the sound from the mixer and mic. Also, I change my preferences in Garageband to use the USB mixer and Mic, but my Track Editor "wave forms at the bottom af Garageband are barely visible, no matter how loud I set the input volume. I used to have very large wave forms in the track editor when using my Logitech USB mic. The sound is fine when played back but it is a real pain when trying to edit in Garageband when I can barely see the wave forms in the track editor. I have tried this set up on my Powerbook also, with the same results. Can someone please help me with the settings using this mixer so I have GOOD usable wave forms in Garageband. Thanks -Swomper

  • Adobe Audition CS6 and Alesis Multimix 8 Firewire choppy playback

I recorded a whole podcast using both Adobe Audition CS6 and Alesis Multimix 8 Firewire, and I originally played it back it was fine.  Now after a week I play it back in Adobe Audition and the dialogue is choppy and repeating itself constantly every second.   When I export it in a multitrack mixdown as a WAV file it still does the same choppy repeating thing.  Has anyone else run into this problem who has a fix?
    Thanks!

I don't use any Alesis products but have heard rumours in another forum that they're having some driver issues.
Maybe as an experiment you could export to a wave file and try playing that through your internal sound card rather than the Multimix.  If playback is clean when not involving the Multimix that may suggest the problem lies in the Alesis gear.  If the skipping is still there then something is likely going on within Audition.

  • Alesis Multimix !6 Firewire with logic express 7

    Hi,
I just recently bought the alesis multimix 16 firewire and i wish to record using logic express 7. I cannot figure out how to set it up so i can record.I am fairly new to the whole logic software......If someone could help me that would be great

    Hi Mike,
Logic is not a toy so you should read at least the getting started manual to understand how the program is structured.
About your question, I don't know if the multimix is straightly recognized or if a driver from Alesis is required.
Pleae give me more details about your problem and I'll be glad to help you.

  • Firewire issue with Alesis Multimix

Hello, I have an iMac 10.6.4. I have been trying with no success to hook up (via firewire) to the Alesis Multimix 8. I also have the Tascam 1804. I downloaded the correct drivers for each source. Followed all directions such as turning units off and restarting. For some reason, it seems the iMac does not see either of the units. I have been alternating the units several times, removing and re-installing the drivers. Yet, I cannot see the either unit in hardware overview, nor in Logic Express. I am using a new firewire 9 pin to 6 pin cable. When I click on the icon for the Alesis unit, I get a message saying "Alesis Firwire, no devices found, connect devices" The Alesis does not show in Logic Express either. As far as the Tascam is concerned, their message states, FW1804 not available. It seems the iMac just does not recognize any of these units. Can anyone shed light on this for me please, I would hate to run out an buy another interface!

Have you tried hooking up just one device at a time? Don't know if it will help, but maybe it needs a little time to configure one device at a time.
I had the same kind of problem (with hooking up a Mbox2 (firewire) and an ext. firewire HD). I installed them separately. Now they still don't really like working together, but when I hook up my HD first and after that the Mbox, it works fine.

  • High CPU Load with Alesis Multimix Usb 2.0 mixer

    Hi everybody,
i'm still playing around with logic studio 9, mainly mainstage 2.1.1 for a possible future live use.
Today i tried to use my Alesis Multimix 8 usb2.0, just as the output devices, using software instruments with a m-audio keystation.
I always get cpu peak load when playing notes, with every patch, either internal apple instrument or third party au instruments, when idle cpu load goes to about 40%...
If i revert back to internal output / internal input, cpu load drastically goes down to 10% idle and max 50-60% with internal instruments, max 80% with 2-3 layers of third party au instruments (Omnisphere, loungelizard, m-tron)...
I know that Alesis mac drivers for snow leopard are at a beta stage, but am i the only one experiencing this or is it a known problem?
    Thanks,
    Alex.

    Hi Pan,
i made a different test today...
I know it's not the same but i tried using a guitar rig on mainstage (guitar on channel1 in the mixer), and even with 256 samples i ALWAYS get 100% cpu usage...
then closed mainstage and opened NI Guitar Rig 3 as standalone, using the alesis as interface, with 64 samples as buffer, i cannot go over 13-14% of CPU usage (Hi quality enabled)... I know that mainstage adds more effects than the ones i selected in guitar rig 3, but the HUGE difference in cpu usage cannot be just that, i mean...
It could be if one of the effects Mainstage was using is Space Designer.
If it is using Space Designer try using a lesser reverb, like Gold.
USB doesn't use that much more CPU so that's not the problem.
You are comparing two separate guitar setups, correct? Or do you mean you're opening Guitar Rig 3 in Mainstage?
    pancenter-
As I understand it you are opening completely different setups, correct.

  • Help needed in getting my Alesis Multimix Firewire 16 to work with Audition CS6

I've just bought a new Fujitsu AH 532 Lifebook Laptop with a Windows 8, 64 bit OS. I've installed my Adobe Audition CS6 on it and I've connected my Alesis Multimix 16 Firewire to it via my StarTech 34mm Firewire Express Card which has a Texas Instrument Chipset. AA CS6 sees the mixer but only allows a stereo track input but it also does not want to record. I've attached some images of the audio channel mapping, audio hardware setup, and also the multitrack recording view. Also I'm using the Alesis Windows 7 driver for the mixer. You will also see that I cannot select the sample rate in the audio hardware setup panel, the sample rate is stuck on zero. In the multitrack view there's no signal when I press the record button.
All suggestions and help will be highly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Donovan.

It's probably nothing but this is from the Windows Dev Center
"In Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows Millennium Edition (Me), and Windows 98, audio drivers conform to the Windows Driver Model (WDM) and make use of the kernel streaming (KS) components, which operate in kernel mode and are part of the operating system."
I don't see any mention of Windows 8 - maybe nothing?
Just a thought - why not try the asio4all driver just to see if it makes a difference?
You can install it and then select that driver in Audition - you can always switch back

  • Adobe Audition CS6 and Alesis Multimix 8 USB 2.0 Help Needed!

    Hey Everyone!
I have an iMac that I'm running Adobe Audition CS6 on and need some help with getting it to recognize my Alesis Multimix 8 USB 2.0 mixer. Mind you, I have no idea why Audition only lists "Internal Microphone" as my only choice under "Audio Hardware," so every ounce of help will be much appreciated!
So basically, how do I get Adobe Audition CS6 to recognize my Alesis mixer as audio hardware to let me record through it?

I'm not a Mac user but a quick look on the Alesis site suggests you may need to installed specialist Mac drivers, available here:  MultiMix 8 USB 2.0 Integrated USB 2.0 audio interface and mixer
Edited to add...it wouldn't take a direct link but if you click on "Documents and Downloads" you should get what you need.

  • Alesis Multimix 8 input works but not output

    Hi,
I'm trying to use the alesis multimix to playback a garageband project via firewire. This is to hopefully reduce latency. However, when I change the settings in garageband to alesis for but in and out, only the input works. I also triend changing the output in system prefs to alesis, but still nothing comes through. Soes anyone know anything about this dilhemma?
    thanks,
    Kyle

So when I have just a Mic or a Guitar going through the mixer I can see that it is picking up a signal, but there is no sound.

Garage Band set my recording level at zero, and I cannot change it.

  • Recording Stereo with USB Alesis multimix 12

I'm interesting in recording my guitar in stereo (with a condenser pair) while also recording vocals from a different mic. With my Alesis multimix mixer, i can only record 2 spereate tracks into logic by panning one to the left and one to the right. Is there anyway i can record stereo using 2 mics for my guitar and one for my voice?

No, there is no way to record them separately unless you record your guitar parts first then do a second recording with your vocals while your Mac plays back the recorded guitar parts (via headphone preferably). The Alesis MultiMix USB can only do stereo recording and playback at the same time.
