Alex voice copyright question

I'd like to know if apple has a copyright on the "Alex" voice itself. I'm a writer and I'm writing a series of poems about technology and computers. I really like the way the poems sound when read by a synthesized voice since it fits in with the technical vibe that I'm going for.
If I was to record "Alex" reading my poems into an mp3, add some mood music using garage band, what are the copyright considerations? I'm looking for several answers to the different facets of this question, such as:
Can I legally record the voice at all?
Can I legally record the voice and release it as free content?
Can I legally record the voice and release it as paid content (specifically, I'd like to release a companion CD with a book of poems)?
If so, is it simply a matter of giving apple credit and a citation for the voice? Or would I actually owe them money since I used their voice to read my content and made some (small amount) of money off of it?
If it's really an issue I can read the poems myself, trying to simulate a computerized voice, but I really like the "Alex" voice. It sounds like a neat mix of human and machine, sounding mechanical a large part of the time, but creepily human in others. It's a great effect, and really adds to the mood I am trying to establish with my series of tech poems.
Anyway, thanks for your replies. I'm looking forward to anyone who can shed some light on this.

I cannot comment on the legality issue.
However I would like to give some guidance on how to record poetry using Alex.
(1) You can record directly into an audio file.
* Put your text into a plain text file (not formatted or rich text). One way to do this is with TextEdit.
* Run Terminal, navigate (using "cd") to the folder containing that file. e.g. MyFile.txt
* type the following:
say -v Alex -f MyFile.txt
You should then hear the text spoken by Alex. If it sounds the way you like it, then type
say -v Alex -f MyFile.txt -o MyFile.aiff
You will not hear anything, but the file "MyFile.aiff" will be created in the same directory. You can play this in the Finder, put it into iTunes, work with it in GarageBand, etc.
The advantage of doing this, rather than plugging the audio output of your Mac into a recording device, is that the quality is maximum, there is no distortion, no added noise, no spectral imbalance, and the signal-to-noise ratio will be as good as it gets.
(2) When recording poetry (or anything else), liberally add punctuation. Particularly in poetry at the ends of lines. Commas add a pause and a falling-rising pitch pattern. Exclamation marks will raise the pitch peaks of preceding accented words. An intervening blank line causes a new paragraph to begin, which inserts a larger pause and does lots of things to the pitch.
Compare Alex synthesis of the following two passages. To do so, select all the text and then choose
Safari>Services>Speech>Start Speaking Text
Hit it once
Big Frank bunts?
Cepeda runs to field the ball, so does Hiller, so does Miller
Miller hollers Hiller
Hiller hollers Miller
Haller hollers Hiller points to Miller with his fist
And that's the Miller, Hiller, Haller hallelujah twist
Hit it once,
Big Frank bunts,
Cepeda runs to field the ball, so does Hiller, so does Miller.
Miller hollers Hiller,
Hiller hollers Miller,
Haller hollers Hiller, points to Miller with his fist.
And that's the Miller Hiller Haller hallelujah twist!
(this is from a song by Danny Kaye)
You might not like that particular set of punctuation, but it illustrates the point.

  • The audio in "speak screen" stops working after a few uses. IOS 8.2 did not fix this problem unfortunately. I'm using the Alex voice on a Sprint iPhone 6 plus- if that matters.

I really enjoy the speak screen feature, as the voiceover is too inconvenient and tricky to use. The speak screen option works oerfectly for reading, and helps me as I'm dyslexic. However, the Alex voice stops working after the initial use or soon after. I then have to restart the phone every time in order to get the speak screen to acruelly speak again. Really annoying and was hoping that IOS 8.2 Would fix this, but it appears it had not fixed this bug. Any help with this?

Any problem when connected to another wi-fi network besides your own?
The only additonal troubleshooting options after powering the iPhone off and on, an iPhone reset, and resetting network settings on the iPhone is restoring the iPhone with iTunes from the iPhone's backup and/or restoring with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from the backup.
If no change after restoring as a new iPhone or not from the backup - the same when connected to any wi-fi network besides your own as well as not being able to maintain internet access when connected to your carrier's cellular network, the iPhone has a hardware problem.

  • Is it possible to record Alex voice as sound file?

Hi to all in the iMovie Community,
i am a fellow mac user but usually from within the design and print sector, so do not often come to your community for help. I'm looking for a way to use the Alex voice to record and make an audio file from a text file? Which i can then use together with some video in iMovie - Is this possible?
Sorry to bother you all with this, but i'm guessing the iMovie Community would be the most able to come to my rescue.
I should add that i'm not very familiar with Terminal (somebody mentioned to me there is a way to do what i want there).
    Thanks in anticipation.

Create your text file using TextEdit, highlight all of the text and move to the "Services" menu (under the TextEdit menu).
You'll find an Automator action to send a text to audio file into iTunes. Set the voice to "Alex" and your file is made.
Once in iTunes you can add this new audio track to your iMovie project.

  • Voice Memos question?

Hey guys, I have a question about voice memos on the iPhone 4 and syncing. If I sync the recordings from my phone to iTunes and delete them from my phone (to open up space for other things like apps and pictures), and then plug my iPhone back into the computer, will the memos that were on the computer disappear or will they still be there? Thanks for the time

Did you ever get it fixed?

  • Screenshot copyright question?

I have no idea what forum I'd ask this question, so if my question can't be answered here, please advise where to post.
I'd like to put a screenshot of a Numbers spreadsheet on my website to demo something, but I don't know if there are any copyright issues. I've searched, but can't find any Apple page that deals with it. I found one for Excel on the Microsoft website with instructions, but nothing from Apple.
If anyone can point me in the right direction, it'd be appreciated,
    Doug

    Doug,
Here's what they say to do:

  • Copyright question for posting to the web

    hi all.
i am wondering if someone wouldn't mind giving me a bit of expertise on a question i have.
i have a set of images from various sources that are basically creative imagery. i have organized these and i would like to share them by posting them to an album on my flickr account.
i have named the files with the topic and the photographer and i am wondering if it is likely to create a problem. in /most/ cases these images are actually from the New York Times so the file name says "architecture house_ray jones NYT.png" or whatever.
is there a hard rule against this? is it possible to give attribution in the photo explanation and be OK?
    thanks for any advice.

You'd have to contact the copyright holder to find out what you can do with the images.
    from the NYT website:

  • OK. I have a copyright question. Do I have to put a copyright symbol on each of my photos to protect them from being stolen ? I'm referring to photos of paintings  here. What is to stop readers of the iBook from using the photos?

Ok, I have a question concerning copright. Do I have to put a copyright symbol on every image I use- I'm refering to photos of paintings here. What is to stop readers of the ibook from using my images? They are all my own photos.

You do not HAVE to put a © symbol on each photo. If you own the photos, you hold the copyright. However, nothing stops a viewer from downloading the photo and using it without your permission.
To protect yourself there are alternatives: put a ©2013 by ME in the description of each photo. Always add your copyright notice to the metadata in every photo.
I once had several of my photos taken off the internet and then used in a commercial catalog without my permission. I was outraged, the catalog company was naive, and in the end I received $100 compensation and an apology. - Fabini

  • Logic Loop Copyright Question

Hi all. My question is, are all of the loops provided in Logic, Garageband, or any of the Jampacks, free from copyright restrictions? Meaning when utilized for commercial purpose, do they need to be declared as samples, or is everything provided, basically up for grabs? Thanks!

I thought this was quite clear:
"2. Permitted License Uses and Restrictions.
This License allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple Software on a single Apple-labeled computer at a time. You may use the Apple and third party audio loop content (“Audio Content”), contained in or otherwise included with the Apple Software, on a royalty-free basis, to create your own original soundtracks for your video and audio projects.
You may broadcast and/or distribute your own soundtracks that were created using the Audio Content, however, individual samples, sound sets, or audio loops may not be commercially or otherwise distributed on a standalone basis, nor may they be repackaged in whole or in part as audio samples, sound libraries, sound effects or music beds."

  • Sound Voice over questions

    A few sound questions...
Is there a way to capture only the sound to save space from my Camera...?
When using voice over, it collects all the fan noise from the computer... is there a solution for this?
Is anyone aware of a Digital Voice recorder that could be used and converted for narration and voice over.... ?
    I have mac without intel
I Mac 17 inch with superdrive Mac OS X (10.3.9)
    Thanks

Thanks so far... I am just looking to get voice over picture narration... so just need voice recording ... Now if I can pull music off a CD... is there a way to record on a digital voice recorder and transfer to CD...
The Imac does not have a plug for an external mic, that I can find...
The problem as I see it with recording voice on Camera is that I just need the voice, not the picture and so it uses up a lot of memory to do voice over in Camera since I have to import the useless picture as well so if I am being clear here, I am just trying to have sound tracks such as the ones you can import off a CD
I have been looking a digital voice recorders but most do not seem to work with mac... and I am not exactly sure of what sound file type transfers into FCE via Itune import.
So the short question here are what are the options just for sound files for FCe?

  • How to set up the default voice over sounds exactly like the Alex voice?

    Hi,
Anyone know how can I find out the exactly settings of the New System Voice Over Sound that shipped with the v10.5 Leopard call Alex?
When I first opened the Voice Over set up windows, a voice called Alex greeting me and said it is the new voice of 10.5, it sounds very natural with the exactly right rate, pitch and volume.
But when I later try to go into the voice over set up menu to get the exactly sound as my default setting, I can't reproduce the same sound quality... can anyone know how to fix this?
    thanks in advance!!

I did. Their technical team knows very little about iPhones, and tried to refer me to the local Israeli dealer (iDigital) which doesn't support iphones at all, so I'm kind of stuck.
I found a few posts on the Interenet talking about using *5005*86 to program the iPhone's modem through them, but I couldn't figure what to type exactly to make it work...

    Anyways, thanks for the help.

  • Basic voice recording question

Sorry for the basic question. I'm using a Plantronics headphone and an early Powerbook G4 laptop running 10.3.9. I just want to do some voice recording on Garageband 3.
My system preference for sound is audio line-in port (I don't see a microphone jack on this G4 laptop).
My system preference for Garageband only gives me the built-in audio option for audio input.
I don't seem to be able to figure out how to record my voice. Can anybody help with the settings or procedures. Thanks much!

    Hi charles,
Not familiar with that version of the iBook, but if there is a headphone jack, the line-in would be the same size plug as that (i think it wil have to arrows pointing towards a dot).
Recording voice has alot of options. If we knew what you were trying to record (singing, podcast, voice over) we could be more specific. Budget is a huge factor as well.
Just a couple of quick suggestions,
Podcasting, can't go wrong with a USB mic (Sampson and Blue both make good ones) and you don't have to buy anything else to work with them.
Vocals (singing), you should get a digital interface, a good pre amp and a good mic. In this catagory, the more money you spend (usually) the better quality you will have.
lets start here and you can get back to us....
good luck Charles and welcome to the forum!

  • Voice-Over Questions

I made a movie of a tour of a house. I put in one long voiceover that runs the entire length of the movie, describing each room of the house. I want to split up the voiceover, and move some things that I'm saying around into different orders, and match up some spots where I'm talking about one thing, but something else is on the screen. Example: I'm talking about the fireplace, but the pool is on the video screen.
I loved the old iMovie where you could just split the audio clips, and move them wherever you wanted to.
I've been working on this for hours!!!!
Very Frustrated, but thankful for your help!

Can the loops be used to create my own song and be able to copyright this for myself or are the loops protected by Apple copyright?

Yes - although you don't really copyright your song, that happens automatically as soon as you create it. Registering copyright is what requires you to do something.
or are the loops protected by Apple copyright?
As I understand it, only to the extent that you couldn't sell them as your loops. However, you're allowed to use them in your music, in which you own the copyright.

    Hello everyone,
I am trying to access my brand new Live! cam voice using standard wiaClass code like this in C#:
    WiaClass wiaMgr = new WiaClass();
wiaDevs = wiaMgr.Devices as CollectionClass; // call Wia.Devices to get all devices

In windows XP I get the device appearing in the Device manager as a Imaging device, but it does not appear int the cameras and scanners list in the control panel. What is the deal, do I need some special drivers, does the cam not support standard access?

  • Adding copyright question

Is there any way to add a logo copyright instead of just the standard typed info in Lightroom or even in CS3? I'd like to add logo to batch things and am not fond of the typed copyright look in lightroom.

Not natively. You either use LR/mogrify (google for it) as an export plugin, or you use the print panel in 2.0 beta.
