Alias could not be opened/Name or password is incorrect (Vista- OSX woes)

I recently bought a Macbook (my first Mac, loving it by the way) so I'm trying to find a way to access all my media files on my windows PC over my wireless network. I've enabled sharing on both my Windows and my Mac and using my Windows Laptop to copy files onto the Mac is absolutely fine. However, the problem occurs when trying to access my Windows Laptop with my Macbook.
When I go through finder and browse to my Windows Laptop using 'Network' from the sidebar, I get a prompt for workgroup/username/password, and after entering get the error message:
The alias "_" could not be opened because the original item cannot be found
If I hit command + K instead (in finder) and enter the IP address of my Windows Laptop, I get a different error message:
Could not connect to the server because the name or password is incorrect
Does anyone know why this is happening? I've been googling for the past 2 hours but am yet to find a solution.
Additional info:
1. I'm using the workgroup/administrative account name/administrative password to log onto the Windows Laptop when prompted.
2. I am getting the option to choose which shared folder I want access to before I get the prompt.
This wouldn't be so irritating if it wasn't so easy to access my Macbook's files using the Windows Laptop. I just want things to work as well the other way around.
Can anyone help me?

A great link for seeing how to set it up with windows xp. Can't imagine Vista has changed it much.

I get this message when trying to access a networked PC
After a reboot i go to my network and I can see the XP PC there, after i double click it asks for user name and password, but it always comes back with this message.
"The alias could not be opened, because the original item could not be found"
I have 2 PC's on my network, I can access one with no problems, but not the other.
Any help?

Sort of fixed this issue by connecting to the server using the name and not the ip address.

Mac alias could not be opened....

everytime i try connecting to a computer on my network i get a:
"alias could not be opened because the original item cannot be found"
i have just recently upgraded a G5 computer to Tiger, and previously i was able to connect to the network and it was all fine. After the upgrade, it gave me that error every time i tried connecting to a computer. my internet connection is fine, my email works fine, other computers can connect to that computer but it can't connect to any computer. I am very lost and confused...can someone help me?

OK, then some things you might try:
1. In /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/ folder toss the following if present:
com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
com.apple.smb.server.plist
preferences.plist
You will need to reconfigure all your network preferences on this machine.
2. In Network preferences TCP/IP section for the port you are using, turn off IPv6 in the Configure IPv6 drop down menu. Do this for all the ports you currently use - Ethernet, Airport, etc.
3. Update OS X to 10.5.4 or the current version. You can download combo updaters from www.apple.com/support/downloads/. 10.5.1 is not the best version of OS X to use as it had many problems. Of course back up your current system before doing any updates, and repair the hard drive and permissions before backing up.

I changed my iPhone lately but i can't restore my last backup since it keeps saying "itunes could not restore backup because the password was incorrect" but I don't know where to put the password to make it happen... Any suggestions?

Select your iDevice in the iTunes.
Choose the Summary screen (tab) and scroll to the bottom of the screen.
Then un-select Encrypt iPhone backup.
iTunes will then prompt you to “Enter the password to unlock your iPhone backup”, enter the password you set originally.

I recently had to re-format my HD due to error with the face, all was running fine until today. I had backed up all my files to my external hard drive prior to the HD crash. Photos and Itunes. Problem is today my i photo library was gone as well as my itunes music. When i tried to restore the folder I could not open my files that are .jpg saved on my external drive. I did the shift+option key when starting I photo to recreate the folder, but I still can't open my files in the external drive. Obtained the error "Alias .jpg could not be opened because the original could not be found". Are these pictures now lost forever? I can see the .jpg on my external drive. I click on it and it ask me to fix, and choose , but everything is grayed out. Also now my computer doesn't recognize my ipod to sync since the itunes library has been changed or something. the folder was there , but non of my music. Thank you for responding. I am really hoping I can get my photos at least back. Here is what I did. I thought I was being smart by backup up my folders which contained my photos and music to my external hard drive, however I must not understand how mac does this. I dragged and dropped both my itunes folder and iphotos folder to my external hard drive and checked to see if they were there. I though great all looked great. About a month later my mac got a error which indicated my hd crashed so I reformatted my drive and reloaded everything and then I recently noticed that my music and I photos folder were gone, empty. How to open a Numbers doc after message "The document (name) could not be opened." is received?

I opened an Excel file with multiple worksheets by doubleclicking on it, saved it as a Numbers file and made lots of changes to it. Now I can't open it at all. All I get is the message "The document (name) could not be opened."
Any ideas?

It seems that your doc is corrupted.
Try to rename it from ********.numbers to ********.numbers.zip
then double click it
You will get a new ********.numbers file with the structure 'package'.
Try to open it by double-click.
Sometimes it works.

Cannot open Pages documents that I've worked on. I open a new document, work on it, then save and close it. When I try to open the document again, I get the following message: The document "[name]" could not be opened. The file isn't in the correct form

I cannot open Pages documents that I have worked on and saved. When I try to reopen Pages documents that I've saved, I get the following
message:
"The document “[name of document]” could not be opened. The file isn’t in the correct format.
The file might be corrupted, truncated, or in an unexpected format."
I have downloaded the latest update to iWork, but that doesn't help.
I use Mac OSX 10.6.7
I am using Pages '09 version 4.0.5 (852)
If anyone can help, I would greatly appreciate it.

A few general trouble shooting tips that may apply here:
1. If you used Software Update to do the OS update(s) to reach 10.6.7, go to http://support.apple.com/downloads/ and download and apply the Mac OS v10.6.7 Combo Updater. The Combo Updater contains some fixes that were not included in the incremental updaters used by Software Update.
1a. Check that you have the current version of Pages (and of the other iWork applications) installed. All three applications' current version numbers end in .0.5
2. A common cause of malfunctioning applications is a corrupted preferences file (.plist file). Your Pages '09's plist is at yourname > Library > Preferences > com.apple.iWork.pages.plist
Quit Pages, locate the file and Drag it to the Desktop (or to the Trash).
Restart Pages and attempt to open one of the files.
If all is well, Trash the plist file and empty the Trash.
If there's no change, AND you've made changes to the Preferences that you wish to keep, drag the file back to its previous location, replacing any new one that has been created.

No idea when this started but cannot launch iTunes at all. To reiterate, when I try to launch iTunes I get the following error message: The itunes application could not be opened. The file name was invalid or too long.
I actually uninstalled it and reinstalled on my external drive and it came back with the same error. Any ideas on how to troubleshoot what caused this? I am at my wits ends with this!

I can't get mine to open at all. I even try clicking on a song to see if that will open it, nope. I have hooked up my iphone and ipods, nope. Click the icon, nope still nothing. It keeps erroring, but won't let me copy the error to put in here. I looked at the report it wants to send out, but there is nothing that says why it is erroring. Anyone else having this problem. I have a file saved at iCloud that can not be opened anymore.
Numbers says: The document “Name” could not be opened.

I've solved my problem by following instructions here:

Step-by-step:
1. renamed .numbers-tef file to .pdf;
2. control cliked - then - Show Package Contents
3. double clicked index.xml.gz - index.xml has been created!
4. renamed back .pdf to .numbers
5. double cliked file and Bingo! Numbers opened the file.

When I tried save as a file, I get an error msg:
"Could not save (file name) because the file is already in use or left open."
The file is not open anywhere accept Photoshop.
Mac Pro, OSX 10.5.6
Photoshop CS4.
I searched the forum but could not find anything even though i'm sure someone already asked it.

There is a problem with both Photoshop and InDesign, then we can blame wich ever it is.
1. I open a .psd file in Photoshop CS4 by double clicking it in Bridge
2. This image is placed on a page in a open InDesign document.
3. Doing some changes in Photoshop on the image.
4. Trying to save and get this error message (this topics subject)
5. Deleting the image from the page in ID doc, it is the only one in the document.
6. Can't still save file.
7. Closing ID completely and now I am able to save the file.
I tried turning of Live preflight in Indegisn but that didn't help.
So probably the fault is InDesign or the MacOS. I didn't have this problem with CS3. It is a stupid problem because this type of workflow is pretty common and one would expect it to be solved by now.

If you suspect unauthorized access to your apple ID I would normally recommend resetting your password, but you have already done this.

I get this message whenever i try to connect to a shared drive either in windows vista or ubuntu (same machine, triple boot) but windows xp will connect. My network consists of a netgear WGR614 (new) where the mac connects wirelessly and the pc is on a switch/hub with a static ip. bonjour is installed for xp and vista. (is there a linux version or equivilent?) Does anyone know why xp will share but the other OS's won't? Thanx

I had the same problem, I forgot that my pc was running a firewall. I shut it off and my mac connected instantly. You might have to shut down finder and reopen. Also as a follow-up, you may only see "my documents" as an option on your mac to open and use. As I like everything available to me, I had my whole C drive shared, but My Mac didnt see it. On my Pc, I unshared the C drive then shared it and went back to my Mac and reconnected and it showed my C drive...Yes!! As far as running the firewall during networking between the 2, you will have to tweak the firewall permissions, all are different, I could not tell you how to do it. Hope this helps.
