Alias folders in stacks on dock

I have a folder in my dock as a stack, and it has alias folders inside it.
When I click on one of the alias folders to view the contents, nothing happens and it doesn't open in finder.

Hi tsofio,
I saw this posted by macwiz1220 but it was never confirmed that it actually worked.
This is a variation on it. Locate the file;
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist
and drag it to the desktop, and immediately log out and then log back in again.
If that does not work you might have to use Terminal. Here is the original post:

  • Have a opening triangle to alias folders as to real folders?

    hello.
Would there be a way to get opening triangles to alias folders in the list view (like to real folders)? (They works like that in column view, but not in list view.)
    thanks

Regarding your new tab page being hijacked, can you describe what appears there in more detail? In case one of your extensions is involved, could you test the page in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode]].
You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:
    * "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
    * Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
Not all add-ons are disabled: Flash and other plugins still run
After Firefox shuts down, a small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (''not'' Reset).
    Any difference?

  • I keep getting alias folders and files

After eons usin Mac I, all of a sudden, am getting alias folders and files (including photos) on my new iMac. These can't be opened. Then I keep error messages about not being able to use the same files because they are "backup" biles. Help! I'm not doing anything differently than what I have done for years. And, this issue has virtually stopped my work in its tracks.

Where are you seeing these files, and what application are you using at the time? Select one and open the Finder Info window. In the General section of the window, what is shown for Kind and Where?

  • How to Properly Remove iPhoto Alias Folders

    Hello Team,
Over the many years as an iPhoto user, I have made many upgrades to my iPhoto Library. I have noticed that each upgrade comes with its quirks. The one that is recently bugging me are the alias folders that are created within iPhoto when you 'Show Package Content' in Finder.
For example, showing the contents of iPhoto shows that my files are no longer located in the 'Originals' folder, but now in a 'Masters' folder. I have a 'Library6.iPhoto' along with a 'Library.iPhoto'.
There are a few other alias folders that I'm sure came with upgrades since when I create a fresh iPhoto Library, none of those folders are present.
So my question is...  "How do I (or iPhoto) remove these folders properly?"
I'd like to have all the photo nice and clean with the most up-to-date file hierarchy and not some fragmented linking from yesterday. Why does Apple do this? Is there a good reason?
Also to note, I have tried copying a smaller library with the same issue and tried rebuilding the database, library, thumbnails, etc without any luck of making them disappear.
    Thoughts??
    Thanks!!

Was hoping there was an Apple sanctioned consolidation tool that would convert everything to the new heirarchy.
The "Apple Sanctioned" consolidation tools are the iPhoto Library First Aid tools. They will rebuild the iPhoto Library in exactly the way how it is supposed to be organized.
Back up your library, hold down the ⌥⌘ command keys, launch iPhoto and run "Rebuild Library". The result should be very similar to what you are seeing now. However, rebuilding shpuld only be done, if iPhoto is not working properly or before a software upgrade, that will reorganize the library.
If you want to access your photos, there are more versatile and safer ways than digging around in the package:

  • Stacks folders missing on right dock

After upgrading from tiger to snow leopard there are no stacks folders on the right side of the dock.

It's not clear what the problem is.
You have folders but they aren't displaying as stacks?
Control-click on the folder and select Display as Stack.
You are missing folders on the right side?
If so, you will probably have to repopulate by hand.

  • Why can't we have folders AND stacks in the dock?

If I drag a single item into the dock, I want it to remain a single item.
If I drag multiple items into the dock, I want them to become a stack.
If I drag one folder filled with multiple items, it should only turn into a stack on my say-so, like if I Option-Drag it onto the dock or something. Stacks shouldn't be forced onto the user.
Please make Stacks an ADDED FEATURE and not an ABSOLUTE CHANGE in everyone's daily workflow.

I might actually buy a windows laptop.  So sad.
No need, as long as Apple continues to offer a notebook line-up that includes built-in optical drives, to buy a Windows machine... yet.
As I said, the only thing that I use my SuperDrive for now is backups of all those digital software deliveries, documents, etc. If I finally break down and buy an external Blu-ray drive, I won't use the SuperDrive at all. But right now I have almost 12 years of back-ups on DVD, both single and dual layer - so, for now, I need my optical drive.
I'm hoping that - one day - Apple will sell MacBook Pros with Blu-ray drives. Hey, I can wish, right?

  • Disc image alias don't work in dock

    I recently 'upgraded' to mountain lion and since then my dock shortcuts no longer work;
I keep all of my personal files inside an encrypted sparse image then I have alias files for that drive and some of the folders within it stored on the local drive which I would then have in finder.
This used to work perfectly well and if the volume wasn't mounted it would prompt me to do so.
Now; it prompts me if the drive isn't mounted but then the links don't open their target folders, they work fine if I open the alias from within finder, shortcuts to physical drives and folders on physical drives still work fine when in the dock.
nb; the folders within the sparse image can still be added to the dock as a stack but that doesn't solve the issue.
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks.

Thank you so much for the tip.  It worked, in a sense.  But I have several individual files I'd like to have aliases for.  If I drag each one to the dock, my dock would be cluttered with these aliases.  Prior to mountain lion, I was able to have a folder of aliases on my dock, in list form or stack form.  I can still do that with any files not in a sparsebundle.  But the files in my sparsebundle won't work in that alias folder.  They only work as you suggested, individually dragging each one to the dock.
Is there any way to consolidate these aliases into one folder on the dock?
Again, thank you very much for your time and attention.

  • No applications stack in dock

How do I get an applications stack in the dock - dragging the folder to the dock doesn't work.

    For a visual, see: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3739
Notice that near the top of the article is an image of the dock. Item #3 on Apple's diagram is referred to as the "Dock Adjuster". It looks like a dashed line going off into the distance. You can only drop files or folders on the RIGHT side of that "Dock Adjuster" (if you drop a folder it will create a "Stack"). The left side of the "Dock Adjuster" is reserved for applications.
To do this with your "Applications" you just need to open Finder so that you can see the Applications folder. Double-click the hard drive icon on your desktop (probably named "Macintosh HD" unless you renamed it.). In the Finder window, drag the "Applications" folder to the right-side of the "Dock Adjuster" and drop.

  • HT3739 accidentally removed stacks from dock

How do I get it back?

Which stacks? Those are aliases to the original folders, so find the ones you want to restore and drag them onto the Dock.

  • Duplicating Folders in Stacks Grid

I've got a problem with Stacks that is driving me crazy. Every now and then, the contents inside the stacks that contain my home folder and my applications folder, are duplicated. But NOT inside of other containers that I have dragged to the Dock. If I reboot, it fixes itself. I did several searches here but did not find an answer.
Here is are screen shots that show what I'm talking about:
    Home Folder:
    Application Folder:
Recently Used Items (This one is fine!)
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks!

Well yeah I agree with a few exceptions. the 10.5.2 update basically did away with Quay. But there is still no way to choose a fixed icon for a Stack folder you display on the Dock... so you have to do a mod or "work around".
The update also did nothing to allow you to have illuminated selections when in grid mode, which really should be standard. And the hacks I've employed are terminal hacks, not 3rd party programs. So I really don't think that the hacks are causing my problem.
I think the problem for me was that prior to the 10.5.2 update, I had to use Quay to get what I wanted out of stacks, but the update fixed that issue, and I forgot to uninstall it. And even still, I can't say for sure that Quay was the problem. Could be something else. And if all else fails, I'll just undo the two terminal hacks I've done and see what happens.
And honestly, I'd probably much rather go back to the way Tiger handled user folders on the Dock. That was just fine for me.

  • BIG oops - left with only Alias folders/files. What now?

I save my working files (ok, almost everything) in a collection of folders on my desktop. Used my MBP for last two days as the computer for presentations at a workshop so pulled all Desktop folders into a new folder called Everything - this left my on-screen 'look' much cleaner.  When I went to move everything out of Everything and back to my version of normal, I stupidly emptied my trash before I tested the files.  Folders are there but empty; files are there but empty ... when I click to open they all say:  Kind: Alias, and it appears all are 1 MB on disk.
I used Time Machine earlier this week but have never had to restore from that.  Before I make another move, I'm looking for the expertise of the community.  Is restoring from Time Machine the right move?  Does 'Alias' mean it's all there somewhere and I just need to understand where to look?
    Many thanks,
    Sabrina

An alias is just kind of like directions to tell where the original item is.  I'm unclear on what you did, but if you put aliases to those files on the desktop and then deleted the Everything folder, you will have deleted all that data.  The aliases are now pointing to something that no longer exists.
To restore from Time Machine, open a window in the Finder and navigate to your Desktop folder (which is in your user folder).  With that window frontmost, enter Time Machine (either using the Dock icon or by choosing Enter Time Machine from the Time Machine menu).  Time Machine will show you the latest backup of the contents of that folder.  If the files you want aren't there, go to the previous backup.  Continue until you find the files you want, then restore them.

  • Alias not working in the dock

    Hi all,
I am working on an intelmac 2x2.26 Quad Core Xeon, on 10.5.7
I am having problems with adding a folder in the dock. I work off a server and when I drag a folder to the dock, it works fine until I restart. After the restart the icon is still in the dock but when it is clicked nothing happens. I have already checked the following:
    • Already connected to network before clicking the folder in the dock
    • The original folder still exist
The strange thing is if I make an alias on my desktop of the folder, the link is remembered after restart, and when I put the alias from the desktop into the dock, the link to the folder is remembered in the dock too, but I really need to have the folder working in the dock as it speeds things up alot and also its bugging the **** out of me.
    Thanks for your help

    Hi,
this is a good workaround, but the subfolders often change during the day so I would have to keep updating the main folder with new aliases, also this doesn't really get to the bottom of why the dock is not remembering the shortcut created from the folder on the server

  • Change the appearance of a 'saved search stack' in dock

    Hi,
I read a hint on Mac OS X Hints which I particularly like, allowing for a saved search in the dock to behave as a stack showing all recently used documents. See here for the original hint.
The problem I have is that the icon of this stack is a drawer with papers in it. It looks really out of place next to my other stacks, so I would like to customise it. I have changed the icon of the entry in ~/Library/Saved Searches, but that doesn't get reflected in the dock. I have looked at ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist, but there is no reference to an icon in there that I could potentially change.
How do I change the appearance of a 'saved search stack' in the dock!?
    thanks,
    Rob

I agree with you that this is not good design and only adds to the confusion of new users, not lessens it.
It also makes more steps for experienced users.
Still it is what it is. Personally I'm sticking with Snow Leopard. After all the anticipation I found Apple has screwed up Lion and it is looking like their version of Vista. A rearrangement of the deckchairs to distract you from the gaping hole in the side of the ship, and that the Shipping Company has decided they are switching to other businesses.
Save a version is Save, and OSX handles all saves using versions you can step back through.
Duplicate is Save as with an extra step inbetween where the file has another name that you need to change. btw also lacks a shortcut. Nice one Apple.
Revert has always been there in OSX and was one of the few improvements in that it consistently lets you go back to your last saved version.

  • "Recent Items" stack in Dock

I typed the required commands into Terminal to create a Recent Items stack in the Dock, which I then limited to recent documents.
One morning when I booted, the Recent Documents stack was missing. I dragged the "empty space" where it had been out of the Dock and tried retyped the Terminal commands to regain the recent items stack:
    first, <defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-others -array-add '{ "tile-data" = { "list-type" = 1; }; "tile-type" = "recents-tile"; }’>
and then, when that was not successful, <defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-others -array-ad>.
I followed each one with "killall Dock".
All that happened, both times, was the disappearance of ALL my stacks from the Dock.
Am I typing these commands wrong, or what? I also notice that sometimes after typing one into Terminal, my original prompt doesn't reappear but only a < sign.
What should I do to get my recent items stack back?

    Hi,
    1) go to terminal
    2) type in pico
    3) type in the following script (or copy it!)
    !#/bin/bash
    *defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-others -array-add '{ "tile-data" = { "list-type" = 1; }; "tile-type" = "recents-tile"; }'*
    *killAll Dock*
    4) save file as recents.sh
    5) give it executable rights *chmod u+x recents.sh*
    6) execute it ./recents.sh
    7) keep the file for later use (if you want)

  • All can see on my desktop is the screen saver, no folders and no icons/docks can anybody help?

all i can see on my desktop is the screen saver, no folders, icons / dock it happened after cleaning the laptop and may have pressed random things on the keyboard when wiping over them, any suggestions? Thanks!

    Hi again,
The problem may be corrupted preferences. If it persists, use the Finder's Go dropdown menu at top of screen and select Go to folder. Input ~/Library/Preferences and move these files to the Trash.
    com.apple.finder.plist
    com.apple.desktop.plist
    Restart the computer.
