Alias for iCloud File

I have just started storing some files in iCloud. I want to make an alias for that file in iCloud and put it into my dock. When the file is on my computer, I can just drag and drop the file onto the dock and the alias is added. I tried that with iCloud to no avail. Anyone know how to do this?
I just upgraded to 10.8.

I too have just moved some files into iCloud and I miss being able to just click the alias on my desktop.. now i have to open Numbers, click the file - more steps..

First I'd like a quick list of steps on how to set up an iCloud alias on the PC (Windows 7).
And second, can someone tell me what an alias is? Because in other forums all I've learned about it is that it is almost an alternate email address, which in fact it's the same address as the primary address. But not... So if someone could clean up that confusion before I start making alias's galore!

This explains how to create an alias on iCloud.com: http://help.apple.com/icloud/#/mm6b1a490a. An alias address is an alternative email address that will receive email in your existing iCloud email inbox. They can be suspended or deleted later. Just be aware that you can't later use it to create another iCloud account or move it to another account.

Can I keep my iCloud files from syncing with my Mac?

I keep all of my photos on an external disk and I just upgraded my iCloud storage to both backup and make my photos available in the cloud. However, my iCloud drive is syncing with my internal Mac drive and I'm running out of room. Is there an option for iCloud files no to sync with my local drive?

The Safari iCloud icon is for iCloud tabs which syncs all of your tabs in Safari between all of your iOS devices and Macs. So basically while you were dragging the iCloud icon into Finder, you were doing nothing. Also iCloud only saves information and files from certain applications such as Reminders, Notes, Messages, Safari, TextEdit, etc. If there are apps that do not natively support iCloud you cannot save their files to iCloud because Apple does not have a feature that can save any file from any app on your Mac. Sorry to tell you this.

Numbers: how can i set an alias to a file in icloud?

Hi,
I moved a table into the iCloud so I can sync it across my devices. That works just fine.
BUT: Since I work with this file quite frequently, I would like to place an alias on my desktop. I am absolutely clueless on how to do this....any suggestions?

I think Jerry's suggestion is the best practice. But if for some reason you don't like opening Numbers first and then opening the document, but always want to just click on an alias on the Desktop, then in Finder while holding down the option key you can Go > Library > Mobile Documents > com~apple~Numbers and find your document, create an alias, and drag the alias to the Desktop (ignoring the warning about removing the alias from iCloud). Thereafter you can click the alias to open the document synced to iCloud. It might be best to try this with a test document to make sure you really want that approach.

I encountered a problem a few weeks ago which is a bit like yours. In my case my Apple ID stopped working after I upgraded to Mountain Lion. I finally found out it was because of the fact that my Apple ID has in fact been an alias within my much older MobileMe/iCloud account. And they weren't able to merge or reset the account at first. It took me a lot of mails and a few calls to get them to resetting the account and changing my Apple ID (for the Apple Store, iTunes, etc.) to a different, non-iCloud related email adress.
Anyway, maybe you can call the Apple Support and kindly ask them to reset the password for this ominous @me.com account so you can finally start using it.
Did you try logging into iCloud using your adress with the appendix @me.com because not everybody has got the @icloud.com ending yet. Technically it's no problem to create a new iCloud account. I can understand though that you'd like to get "your name" back .

HT202999 Performance of 1000+ Files in Pages for iCloud Beta

Has anyone been able to load more than 1000 Pages documents in the Pages for iCloud beta? I get a loading page that never actually loads.

However it seemed the only way to see the file selector window was to close the file I was working on and and then hit the pages for iCloud icon again to get the file select window. However, pages refused to reload. I was left with checking the iCloud files on the Mac. I changed the file name there. It sees to me the online and iOS versions of the program should allow for naming of the file from within the files editing window just as can be done on the mac version.
Thanks for the follow up. I guess I just need to figure out why pages for iCloud wouldn't relaod. I suspect it needs to be closed first and that must involve more than closing a window. That begs the question of how the web based program is closed.

When I create a new blank file in Pages for iCloud beta the file is named blank. There is no obvious way to rename it. If I close the document and then try to restart Pages for iCloud I get an error message stating that pages can't be loaded.
This seems fundamental so I presume it is addressed somewhere.

Connect your iPad to your computer in iTunes. Under the iPad settings under summary, check the box that says backup to this computer. Click apply. Then when you connect the new iPad you can restore that backup on the new one.

Can't acces my icloud files on pages for mac

Hi, I have a weird problem with Pages on my mac. I have installed the last version of pages, and I do have the "Documents and data" item enabled on the icloud settings. When I open Pages and click on "Cloud", there appears no documents even though I can acces all my documents through my ipad and my Ipod touch and through Safari in "icloud.com". The only place where I can´t acces my icloud files is on my mac (all I can see is the introduction to icloud, as if there were no items). I have tried a lot of things, I reinstall pages, I signed out from my Icloud account on the mac, I unchecked the "documents and data" option on the icloud preference, but still can't acces my icloud files. By the way, if I create a document on Pages on the mac, and save it on Icloud, it doesn't show on my ipad, neither on my ipod touch and neither on www.icloud.com. So is like there is a problem with the icloud folder on my mac. Thanks a lot for any comment you could suggest to me.

You have checked, that you are using the same AppleID on your mobile devices as on your mac, right?
And your Pages version is Pages 4.3?
This looks like Pages cannot write to your Mobile Documents folder. Perhaps either MobileDocuments or the Pages folder inside have a permissions problem.
What are the permissions on com~apple~Pages? And on ~Library/Mobile Documents?
Copy and paste these lines into a Terminal window:
ls -ld ~/Library/Mobile\ Documents
and
ls -ld ~/Library/Mobile\ Documents/com~apple~Pages/
Do you see read/write permissions for yourself, like drwxr-xr-x@

You can't delete the address, but you can set up a Rule to move messages to that address to the Trash or another folder. Go to http://icloud.com and go to the Mail page, click the cogwheel icon at top right and choose 'Rules'.
It's a bad idea to post your email address - it's an invitation to spam - even though in fact you haven't posted them in full; I've asked the hosts to remove them.

Dropbox, Microsoft’s OneDrive, and Google Drive all have viewer apps that let you see and manage what’s in the drive. The only way you can do that with iCloud Drive is through a web browser. Very frustrating and backward.

I found a possible band-aid for our problem:
1) On iOS 8 Device, go to Safari / iCloud.com
2) Once you get to iCloud.com, you'll notice it won't give you the option to log in.
3) Tap on the URL bar (this should bring up your bookmarks bar and Frequently Visited Sites)
4) Tap, Hold, and Slide your finger down on that section (this will reveal two options: (1) Add to Favorites, and (2) Request Desktop Site
5) Tap Request Desktop Site
Log in as usual, and you can now access iCloud Drive with your PDFs and other documents like any other computer.
I too am disappointed as I was looking forward to view PDF's shared between my Macbook and my iPad, but I think this should work until Apple comes out with a solution.

ICloud files won't open on Pages for Mac

All of the sudden, I've discovered I can't open iCloud files in Pages on my Mac. (Just checked Keynote and Numbers, both of which I almost never use, and the same problem is happening there).
I CAN open up the files in Pages on my iOS devices and iCloud.com, just not within the Pages app on my Mac. I know I can download files from iCloud.com if I absolutely have to. And while I can't open the iCloud files, I CAN seem to email them to myself. So I have them and can work on them on my Mac if needed...but it's annoying to have to do these workarounds.
ALL the apps (on Mac, iDevices) are up to date, and so is Mavericks -- so I'm not sure what the issue is? Is anyone else having this problem?
I also noticed that some of the files, when attempting to open them, have "-tef" attached to the end (like "[filename].pages-tef"). I've never seen that before, and not sure if that's related to the issue or not. Any help on getting iCloud files to open on my iWork Mac apps would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

An empty .doc file will produce that error message in Pages v5.2. Click once on the .doc file, and then press option+command+i. If it says Zero bytes, game over. Otherwise, what is the Created date reported with the preceding Show Inspector key combination?
If the MS Word document is too old, Pages v5.2 will refuse to open it. If the .doc icon has text in it with the word DOC at the bottom, it should open. If it is a plain icon with DOC at the bottom, or does not have DOC on the icon, it may be an alien that Pages v5.2 cannot handle.

Where is the iCloud file in Finder (Mavericks) ?

I didn't realise that sharing Pages documents on iCloud makes them disappear from their previous location, it's a terrible idea ! Is there an iCloud file somewhere that I could find with the Finder ? At least, I could create an alias to fix my problem... Thank you for your help !

I saw the Library file in HD, the one in System, but not in my user file... The missing information was the "option key" part...
I'll make an alias of this Mobile Documents file and place it in the sidebar of the Finder.

Some playlists and/or songs "not eligible for iCloud"

I have a playlist that contains only music but iTunes Match refuses to upload it, saying it contains "other media types".
Having thoroughly gone through the contents of the playlist, I have found one song, a Frank Sinatra .mp3 ripped from a CD I own, that is listed as "not eligible for iCloud", as well as 4 songs marked by iCloud as "duplicates"
I have tried manually adding the Frank song to iCloud but its status remains unchanged.
The song, in mono, is a 733K MP3
I had to convert it to AAC which nearly quadrupled the size of the file to 3.2 MB and now it's uploaded...
However the status of the playlist remained unchanged until I also removed the "duplicates"
a) iCloud should nevertheless sync playlists, minus the ineligible tracks
b) or you should get a warning that it won't sync the playlist, and better error reporting so you can actually understand what the issue is, as opposed to the usually vague "iCloud doesn't like your track, but won't tell you why" message...
c) duplicate tracks in playlists should automatically (or after a prompt) be replaced by the original track that is in iCloud.
iTunes Match, you have wasted many hours of my time despite my well organized and healthy library.

I changed my Apple ID to my new email and now cannot find any way to access icloud. Unfortunately I had allowed icloud to hijack my airbook files, so of course I am afraid I will lose them tomorrow when I exchange my iphone for a new one and cannot keep an icloud account i cannot access. What a poor sync system! Really atypical for apple!
