Alias Hard Drives out of the blue and Trash removal

All of a sudden I have two hard drives and two external drives on my desktop. They have the little arrow on the bottom left corner and I think they are Aliases . They just appeared after being online . I dragged them to the Trash thinking they would unmount but they are still in the Trash.
1st) Any ideas on what is going on hear?
2nd) I've never deleted selected items from the Trash . If I highlight certain items and select Empty Trash will the other items be saved ?

They have the little arrow on the bottom left corner and I think they are AliasesProbably. Why not use "Get Info" from the Finder File menu (or Command-I) to find out?

Just to recap, this is a collection of ports I have collected over time for people who needed this information when setting up the HP ePrint app so that they could view their email from within the app. I am certain other applications also need this information. Although lengthy, I could not find a more comprehensive place to retrieve this information. If I install parallels can I pull my hard drive out of a PC and use it through an enclosure with USB connection?

Moreover, you may be able to start your Mac directly from your PC hard drive and run Windows as you did with your PC. To do it, hold the Option (Alt) key while your computer is starting and choose the PC hard drive.
If you want to do it in Parallels, you have to set it up in order to use the PC hard drive as the virtual hard disk

HT201250 I just had a new hard drive installed in my iMac. Migration manager cannot see my external Time Machine hard drive to restore the files and applications. The drive is operational in Finder

I cannot seem to migrate the full time machine backup from an external hard drive back to the new hard drive. Finder sees the drive and files. When I use Migration managers, it only sees the computer hard drive after I select the time machine option to restore the files.

With what OS X version did you make the backup? If it was the same as the version you are using now, you don't have to use Migration Assistant to restore the backup. Instead, there's a safer and better method, but you will lose all the changes you have made since the last time you made the backup.
Just hold Command and R keys while your Mac is starting to start into OS X Recovery. Then, select the option to restore a Time Machine backup, and follow its steps. Also, you will be able to select the backup you want to restore

Hard drive failing showing the blue screen

Dear Toshiba technical support,
I have a Toshiba notebook Satellite L305-S5875 for few months, and it's still in warranty. It shutted down suddenly showing the blue screen saying "physical memory dump...". I tried to restart me computer, but it does the same thing. I tried to reinstall the vista operational system, but it processed half way, then returned to blue screen again. It seems to me that the hard drive is completely failed. Could you please show me how to fix this problem?

The blue screen error happens when RAM details are dumped into a file. This may be caused by a hardware in the computer. It is possible that the newly installed hardware is not compatible to run in your system. Memory stick problem can also be one of the causes of this error. Sometimes starting your Windows in safe mode will do the trick. To do this, press F8 while your computer is starting up. Then choose safe mode option among the list.

I updated FCPX to 10.9 after I had updated my os to 10.9.1. And the result is that FCPx can no longer read LaCie external hard drive where all the projects and events are stored. The program simply crashes every time I try to read anything from the LaCie.

Could anyone tell me what to do to solve the problem. I updated FCPX to 10.9 and the program keeps on crash every time I try to read files stored in my LaCie hard drive. And the program also keeps on crash every time I try to import files from my SDXC cards.

I have solved the problem. Once the update is done, you need to launch FCPX, and go to File, then "update all events and projects". It will solve the problem and everything works fine.

My MB crashed, a friend put our hard drive in another computer- windows xp, the original hard drive is running the computer and I don't have access to any of my bookmarks or history. I've searched through all the helps and nothing seems to fit my case.

I don't know if I have a "profile", can't find the hidden files or instructions to find them, can't find the firefox.exe file on old hard drive - followed each solution as far as I could and nothing has helped so far.

First of all please remember the advice in my post about backing up information and bookmarks before making changes. Note also
*if you use options from Windows or Firefox to delete personal information it will (or at least will try to ) delete all information from all versions of firefox installed. Do NOT use such options it is likely to destroy History, Bookmarks and Passwords.
* you will have only one copy of History, unless you manually backup the database places.sqlite you could easily loose all your History
IIRC restoring a computer using Windows does not always work in restoring firefox properly, I seem to recall it does not restore all required files.

You will need to read the above linked instructions carefully. Rather than trying to move the profile itself I was expecting you to follow instructions to just copy required files such as the Bookmarks and History that would be in the database file ''places.slite''.
Advanced Method edit ''Profiles.ini' to point at original profile on other Hard Disk Drive' 
There is an alternative method and that is to leave the old profile where it is and use that with the new Firefox installation. I tend to manually move profiles but this is not really recommended as it is easy to make mistakes. You will certainly find the method in the above paragraph easier If you want to try the alternative method then note that
*a file called ''Profiles.ini'' will need editing
*you will need to use Relative=0 and the full path

Copy old profile content to New profile 
This should be relatively easy and work If the versions of Firefox are the same and the original profile was working properly. Note you copy the contents and all sub files and folders, but you do not copy the folder name. So do not completely overwrite the new profile, this is because they will have differing names, Firefox adds pseudo random strings to the name.( In the case of your original profile; from your above post; that includes '''''i7twob91''''' in the name)

AEBS + Hard drive out of the question?

Does the release of Time Capsule mean that in order for leopard users who use a macbook pro, macbook, or now macbook air, will have to buy Time Capsule in order to use Time Machine wirelessly? Or will Apple update the software to allow those who were duped into buying leopard thinking they would be able to use TM without being tethered to the hard drive by a cable? TM was one of the main reasons I bought leopard, and now in order to use it, I'll need to invest another $300+? I dont think so.

There are hacks you can try online. But then again, the safety of them is unknown. It has been rumored that 10.5.2 will fix this problem but some of the newest seeds don't show wireless backup via Time Machine as a feature. However, it's also a mystery of how Time Capsule will work without a modification to Time Machine to back up wirelessly.

Problem with LR5 Import on MAC, it always shows "file cannot be imported because it could not be read" This happens with file downloads from the memory card as well as with files from the hard drive. Happened out of the blue and I cannot figure out why. P

The destination directory, where Lightroom is trying to copy photos to, does not have WRITE permission. Change your permissions.

I accidentally unplugged my 2TB Seagate external drive, and when I pugged it back on, my Mac was still recognizing it, however, when I tried to access its contents, the folders appeared empty, so I tried to eject the drive, but the icon on the desktop was gone, I unplugged it, restarted my Mac, and it did not recognize the external drive. Then I repeated the stunt at lest three times. I thought the drive was ruined, so I got a laptop that runs Ubuntu, and Ubuntu recognizes and displays the contents correctly, which makes me think the external drive is fine. Any ideas on what to do? I mean my Mac won't even acknowledge the drive at all, otherwise I would think about re-formatting. Any ideas, I'd much appreciate it. Thank you.

In iPhoto the double click to enlarge a photo is now a ! in a triangle and I am Unable to print from iPhoto. This has just happened out of the blue.

In iPhoto I have lost the double click that opensup photos, the double click now appears as a ! in a triangle. At the same time I have lost the print facility in iPhoto. This happened out of the blue and I have been unable to reconcile either problem. Can anyone help please.

The ! means that iPhoto has lost connection to the origianl file.
There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
- What version of iPhoto.
- What version of the Operating System.
- Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
- History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
- What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
- Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

In Disk Utility you need to see a volume or partition in addition to the drive.
If all you see is the drive, then when you ejected it you proably corrupted the volume or partition on the drive.
If that is true then your chances of getting anything back are slim at best.
About the only thing I know that might work not is to send the disk out to a service for recovery. This is going to cost like $$$$.

What happens when the external icon jumps on top on the hard drive icon on the desktop?

The external drive icon jumped to the hard drive icon on the desktop and after that happen the iMAC started running slow. Not sure how that happen or what is happening to the iMAC after it happen. All my applications are running and launching slow. Also, when I tried moving files to the external drive I'll get a "error code -36". When I looked up the error message it says that the file is corrupted even though I could still open them. How can I fix this problem and not lose any files? Thanks for any help.

RRFS has probably got the answer basically - but the combined contents of the two drives has probably maxed out the drive space on Macintosh HD, meaning the OS can't use virtual memory properly.
Open a Finder window and read the available space at the bottom.
If you have copied the drive, it should show as a folder under Macintosh HD in the Finder.
I hesitate to tell you to delete the whole folder as that may be too much for Finder to cope with. Open the folder and delete files and folders in small chunks, emptying the trash each time before doing the next..
Meanwhile, if you go to the Finder preferences and uncheck the item for Hard Disks in the desktop list, then move the icon for the external away from that corner before re-enabling the Hard disk option.
You may need to go to View options from the right-click menu on desktop and set 'arrange by' to 'none' in order to get the icon to stay where you want it.

Hard drive question for the gang

Hey guy's
what would happen, performance wise, if you were to take a new hard drive out of its packaging and just clone it. No format no anything just clone, from a working C drive.
I know the drive will boot and work, but how will it act?
I have 2 Identical drives and 1 was cloned like that to see if it would work. Sandra on that drive 15200
on it's formated clone 28127, is the format the reason?

These days they are selling drives so cheap that you have to wonder where they are cutting costs from. It seems to be that they are dropping the Q/C Departments.
As the sizes of drives goes up and prices come down, so does the quality of the drives.
I do hope that the new SATA Drives bring the Quality and reliability back up.

New Hard Drive, best way Copy system and files

Hello All,
I have a brand new harddrive that I want to put in my PB. I put the harddrive in a FW enclosure and installed OSX 10.4 from an install DVD. Looking on this forum for an idea as to how to transfer my system over to the new drive BEFORE putting it in my PB I discovered the existence of SuperDuper.
The problem is that even after searching the forums for much too long, I have yet to find a nuanced answer as to How I should proceed in getting my system copied to the new drive. Should I:
1) Forget about the bright and shiny new clean install waiting on the new drive and just reformat it and then create a clone using superduper (and the "backup all files" command) on the new drive.
1a) if I do this can I just then take the new drive out of the enclosure and put it in my PB and have it look just like my old drive except with a gajillion more bytes of space that I can put all my new music, photos and podcast on?
2) Should I use the OS I just installed on the new drive and just copy a standard set of system/preferences/data folders onto the new drive and then take it out of the enclosure and put it in my PB?

A follow up
1) I downloaded SuperDuper for free.
2) I put my brand new drive in a FW enclosure, with the Oxford 911 chip set.
3) I plugged I plugged in the new drive via Firewire. Then used Disk Utility to Erase and Format the new drive using OS extended Journaled.
4) I then used SuperDuper and the "Backup-All Files" option to Clone my current (old) drive onto the new drive over the FW connection.
5) Once complete (about two hours, for ~ 70GB) I restarted my computer holding down the option(alt). I selected to boot from the new Hard Drive still connected via FW.
6) Once I verified that I could boot from the new drive and that it was indeed exactly the same as my current drive, I shut down my computer and went through the process of swapping the new drive out of the FW enclosure and putting it in my PB. (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=111925) for an illustrated set of instructions on how to do this.
7) I just started up my computer and I am writing this post from my now new internal HD that is indistinguishable from the old one, only I have roughly 1 gajillion, billion, more 1's and 0's to order into files of my choosing. I am doing snow angels in 1's and 0's.
I hope this and the answers from dolbinau help the next person who want to do a really easy new Hard Drive install on their G4 Powerbook (Tibook)
