Alias versus Hostname

Hi,
I want to know what the steps are to create and then use alias for the hostname in tnsnames and DNS in Sun Solaris 10? What files should be updated?
I have been told to use Alias rather than real host name in tnsnames.ora in case if the host name changes. What files should I update to accomplish this in Solaris?
Thanks in advance

"Is the DNS file in Solaris /etc/vfstab ? "
You are way off. vfstab has to do with filesystems. You can add an entry to the /etc/hosts file although only the local machine will see it. For DNS you need to find out what networking software you are using and ask a networking person to add an entry.

  • Member Alias versus Member names

Hi I have a form in 9.2 for which in the Page Section, I have 4 dimensions selected. The properties for the 4 dimensions is set to display alias names. One of the dimensions does not have an alias name and it displays the member name instead.
After migrating the form to 9.3.1, I have not changed the member properties for the forms and this time the dimension-wihout-the-alias-name displays 'Null' since there isnt an alias name for the member.
Is this a feature change in 9.3.1? or is it a setting I have forgotten to modify?
    Thanks and Regards
    Kunal

    Hi,
9.3.1 does have the same functionality. If there is no alias available you should be seeing member names on forms.
There might have been something wrong during migration. Though, even if so, it is still strange you seeing "null" on forms.
Have you tried changing the property to show names, save and re-set back to alias and save again?
Also, you better make sure that you've applied the latest patches for all 9.3.1 modules.
    Cheers,
    Alp

  • Alias versus duplicate

hi all, i have recently switched and have now VERY happily disposed of everything Windose in my house !.
I am slowly getting used to the new way of doing EVERYTHING, i am curious about some of the new commands i have available in FINDER, there is a "Make Alias" and there is also a "Duplicate" they BOTH seem to do the same thing, ie. Make a copy,  am i missing something, becuase i wouldnt think that Apple would have made two commands available that do exactly the same ????
    tim

    No they are not.
Alias is just a shortcut to that file while Duplicate is copying that exact file(basically having double files)
Here's an example to get a clear picture
When you make an alias of the any file and put that to the desktop. Clicking that Alias would direct you that file but that Alias is not necessarily the file. Think of it as a shortcut. You'll know that this is not the REAL file because of the size
While Duplicate copies the same file. Double the size. This is what you need for backing up purposes

  • How to alias default_host in CRM UI?

We are going to be deploying CRM 5.2 (Web Client) and need to alias the default_host since the website will be accessible externally (outside firewall).
We will be using a web dispatcher to load balance connections between two app servers and act as a reverse proxy.  However, we believe that in addition to the web dispatcher, we need to reference the CRM Web UI using an alias hostname so the service paths are not using the default_host which is the local server name and can only be resolved internally.
I am not sure how to do this.  This is my first time implementing an SAP Web Application (BSP) and I am not familiar with the correct method to alias a hostname for a BSP application.  Is this all done from within SICF?  Is so,  what would be the proper way to implement virtual hosts, external aliases, etc. to accomplish this?
Please advise ASAP and I will reward points.
    thanks!
    John

A piece of advice: Everything regarding 5.2 I would post in the new CRM 2007 forum. Most people working on the never versions of CRM use that forum.

  • Ccmsping registration problem in Solution manager

    hi,
I am installing CCMSPING agent to check "System Availability" from Solution Manager.
In our system ladscape we have multiple systems on sigle host. for eg) TP7 & DW1 on single host cpafisb8.
I have successfully registered the CCMSPING agent in Solman.
I have followed the Availability doc for registeration CCMSPING. Following are the major steps that i have done:
1)Download & extract CCMSAGENT from market place.
    2)Configuration of Central Monitoring system.
3)Registration of CCMSPING using command u201Cccmsping -push -Ru201D.
4)Configured Availability Monitoring in Central System (i.e. Solution Manager) in RZ21.
As result i can see the stellite sytem node in RZ20 under         " SAP CCMS Monitor Templates-->Availability and Performance Overview".
When i go to transaction "solman_workcenter" in tab "System Landscape management", i can see the staus of system as Green for the system i registered.
Now, the problem i facing in in transaction solman_workcenter is described as follows:
As i mentioned We have multiple systems on single host, for eg) TP7 & DW1 are on the same host "cpafisb8",
hence if CCMSPING has been registered for TP7 the status is green for DW1 too even if DW1 has no entry in RZ21.
Strange thing is DW1 was showing.
I have tried following three options to make the status correct in solman_workcenter:
    1) I have maintained hostname for TP7 as "TP7.afis.chevrontexaco.net" which is alias for
hostname cpafisb8 in RZ21 & SMSY & status is correctly showing green for TP7 but still for DW1 which is not defined in RZ21, status is showing green.
2)I have unregistered the CCMSPING fron TP7. TP7 status has been changed to gray but strange thing happeneing was DW1 status was still green even no ccmsping process was running on the DW1 host.
3)I have registered the CCMSPING for TP7 with its central instance profile options using command:
    ccmsping -R -push -n31 pf=/usr/chevron/TP7/profile/TP7_DVEBMGS31_cpafisb8
and agin configured TP7 in solution manager & status changed gray to green for TP7, but no change happening in DW1 status.
Can anyone please help on this strange behavior of Solman_workcenter.

    Hi,
    Thanks for he reply..
But i have already followed the process that you described or CCMSPING registration. and CCMSPING is transfering the data successully from satellite system to solution manger.
And as result of successul registration i can see the status of that satellite system as green in transaction "solman_workcenter".
But as i described earlier we have multiple systems registered on single host.for eg)SY1 & SY2 on host1
Hence even though the CCMSPING is not registred for SY2 & only registered or SY1 on host1 with RZ21 configuration in solution manager for SY1; SY2 status is also shown green in transaction solman_workcenter.
I want that only status of SY1 should be shown as green in solution manger under transaction "solman_workcenter".
I hope you understood the issue.
    thanks

  • SQL*Plus Release 9.2.0.1 remote connection to 10g EX

    Greetings,
I am trying to access my XE database from a linux machine using SQLplus 9.2.0.1. I do the following:
    sqlplus /nolog
    sql>connect username/[email protected]:XEERROR:
    ORA-06401: NETCMN: invalid driver designator
If I leave out the "XE" I get the following error:
    sql>connect username/[email protected]:
ORA-12514: TNS:listener could not resolve SERVICE_NAME given in connect
    descriptor
There seems to be nothing wrong with my database (tnsping works, etc).
One of the enviromental variables in linux is "ORACLE_SID=CLASS1"
I might have a syntax error in the connect function.
Thanks in advance to whoever can help me. I viciously search the forum before posting this and could not get it to work.
    Andrey.

    Andrey,
Is there a reason why you are using a colon between the <hostname>.<domain> and XE? If you use a period instead of a colon and define the default domain in the sqlnet.ora file as follows:
    NAMES.DEFAULT_DOMAIN = <hostname>.<domain>.XE
You should be able to use a similar TNS alias but the colon will trigger an error. If you define your TNS alias as <hostname><domain>:XE and do not define the default domain in the sqlnet.ora file, then you should be able to connect from the command-line but not from within the SQL*Plus environment. For example, using this tnsnames.ora entry:
    hostname.domain:XE =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = hostname.domain)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA = (SERVER = DEDICATED)(SERVICE_NAME = XE)))
You can connect running this at the command line:
    [oracle@s1 admin]$ sqlplus plsql/[email protected]:XE
    SQL*Plus: Release 10.1.0.2.0 - Production on Mon Nov 14 18:22:54 2005
Copyright (c) 1982, 2004, Oracle. All rights reserved.
    Connected to:
Oracle Database 10g Express Edition Release 10.2.0.1.0 - Beta
    SQL>
However, you will get the following running:
    [oracle@s1 admin]$ sqlplus /nolog
    SQL*Plus: Release 10.1.0.2.0 - Production on Mon Nov 14 18:21:42 2005
Copyright (c) 1982, 2004, Oracle. All rights reserved.
    SQL> conn plsql/[email protected]:XE
    ERROR:
ORA-12545: Connect failed because target host or object does not exist
Since the error will not occur if you define a default domain, it appears that changing the colon to a period may be your best solution.

  • How to register a non-local database

    Hi All,
I am fairly new to ms sql server 2008, which has been installed to my workstation.
I have been trying to add a database which is in a ms sql server 2000 that resides in a another machine
My purpose is to run queries from my workstation.
I have been browsing and have already added the details under
Sql Server Configuration Manager > Sql Native Client 10.0 Configuration > aliases
    alias name = hostname
    server = server ip
    protocol= tcp
    port= custom port
after that the alias i made now appears in the server name drop down  when "connect to server" window appear
    Authentication is sql server authentication.
    Server type is Database Engine.
My Colleagues have verified that the info that I have is correct and we have also checked the firewall settings.
I can telnet to the port on the server.
By the way, I am the first person that is using sql server 2008 on a workstation, my colleagues are using sql server 2000 to do queries on our database servers.
My workstation runs on Windows 8.
    Thanks,
    Hans Yu

I was able to connect to a uat server earlier but am unable to connect to3 prod servers with same settings as uat server except different port. I have firewall permission
    Thanks
    Hi Hans,
Based on your description, my understanding is that you cannot connect to SQL Server 2000  in the production server using SQL Server Management Studio 2008. Do you get any errors? You can post the error messages for further analysis. There are some
proposals for you troubleshooting this issue as follows.
    1. Make sure SQL Server services are running properly.
    2. Check that if remote connections are enabled in SQL Server.
    3. Make sure that TCP/IP protocol  is enabled in SQL Server Configuration.
    4. If windows firewall is enabled on the server, sqlbrowser.exe program and UDP 1434 port must be added in windows firewall for access. For more details about configuring firewall, you can review this article:
Configure a Windows Firewall for Database Engine Access

  • Help! How to get DS 5.2 SP4 to startup automatically @ boot?

    Hi,
I've been working on the installation and configuration for DS 5.2 P4 (on Solaris 9), and I ran across the same problem that I did awhile ago.
After doing the DS installation using "setup", the "directoryserver" command/script (/usr/sbin/directoryserver) doesn't work.
Then, because of that, the /etc/init.d/rc2.d/S72directory (which uses "directoryserver") also doesn't work, and so, DS 5.2 doesn't startup at boot automatically.
According to some research I did, the reason the "directoryserver" doesn't work is because it apparently only gets installed/configured correctly if you install DS with a pkgadd, but there is no pkgadd for DS 5.2 P4 (the latest version). There's only a TAR.GZ distribution.
I ran across this awhile ago, but never found a solution, except to maybe hack my own startup in /etc/init.d/rc2.d, and I was wondering if anyone knows how to configure things so that DS would work startup automatically at boot?
    Thanks,
    Jim

    # cd /etc/rc2.d
    # mv S72directory s72directory
    # cd /etc/rc3.d
    # ln -s /etc/init.d/directory S99directory
    # vi /etc/init.d/directory
Create your own start/stop script /etc/init.d/directory with the following content.
    IDS5_PATH=/var/Sun/mps
    SERVER_ID=`hostname`
    LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib:/usr/local/lib:/usr/local/ssl/lib:/var/Sun/mps/lib:/usr/lib/mps
    export LD_LIBRARY_PATH
    case "$1" in
    'start')
echo 'SUN ONE Directory Server service starting.'
    $IDS5_PATH/slapd-$SERVER_ID/start-slapd
    $IDS5_PATH/start-admin
    'stop')
echo 'SUN ONE Directory Server service stopping.'
    $IDS5_PATH/stop-admin
    $IDS5_PATH/slapd-$SERVER_ID/stop-slapd
    echo "Usage: $0 { start | stop }"
    exit 1
    esac
If you have SSL Cert DB, you would need to create a pin text file storing the private key password.
    # echo "Internal (Software) Token:secret" >/var/Sun/mps/alias/slapd-`hostname`-pin.txt
IMPORTANT NOTE: DO NOT LEAVE ANY SPACES after the "Token:" and at the end of the line or else the password will not be recognized by "start-slapd".
    # chmod 400 /var/Sun/mps/alias/slapd-`hostname`-pin.txt

    using DSEE7

the short answer is yes.. you can use a wildcard cert. generate as normal.
    dsadm request-cert name $(hostname)*.$(domainname) city ......

  • Port Change Question

We have a large number of reports (1500 +) currently defined in our CR server (version 9.0) which are used to pull data from our Lawson Financials server and would like to temporarily "repoint" these reports to the Lawson test environment where we are testing an upgraded release.  The two Lawson environments are on separate servers and are listening for connections from CR on different ports.  We can alias the hostname, but is there any way to force the reports, which are currently connecting to Lawson on port 80, to use port 8080 on the test server?
    Thanks!
    Scott
Edited by: Scott Stewart on Oct 22, 2008 4:54 PM

Scott I do understand that is why I said try only with one if possible and then move the masses. I remember I did the similar thing when moved from CR XIR2 (Windows 2000 server) to CR2008 (Windows 2003 Server), however in my case I had to move the files over.
I setup exact same ODBC connection settings in my new server and tested my one report, it worked fine so I moved all the reports over.
I think CR as long as the connection settings and Databases are same will read the reports, however to make sure I would personally test with one report before moving all.

  • Basic u/g install question

    Hello,
So I understand that installing the DS as a user other than root is reccommended.
Is there a user/group pair that is reccommended or does it matter?
The reason I ask is that i do not want to, down the road, have problems with other JES integrated components as a result of my decision.
I was going to install as dsuser and dsgroup
    thanks -john

Well I found this post, right after i installed the DS as dsuser:dsgroup
In any event DS and admin serv appear to start and run fine despite not doing what is listed below.
Is it possible that sun's documentation is out of date ?? ..(: i agree with gary here that something so important as this not being talked about elsewhere, like the DS insatll guide ? or the JES unix install guide is a amiss.
Found this in the documentaion. It basically says that you must install everything as root then change to a regular user. It is in chapter 1 of the administration guide. Kind of a small blurb for something that would seem as important as this. Any way here is a cut and paste:
Normally you must be root to start Directory Server if the port is less than 1024. The following procedure enables you to use a specified non-root user instead.
Install Directory Server and Administration Server. When configuring the servers, ensure that the user for both servers is root.
Use the installation instructions in Java Enterprise System Installation Guide.
Stop the Directory Server. See Starting and Stopping Directory Server.
From the ServerRoot directory, run the following commands to change directory and file ownership to the required userID.
    chown -R userID:groupID slapd-hostname
    chown -R userID:groupID alias/slapd-hostname-*.db
Edit the file dse.ldif to change the nsslapd-localuser value from root to the required userID.
Restart the Directory Server. See Starting and Stopping Directory Server.
Hopefully this will help somebody out in the future.

  • How to distinguish use of cmdlet versus alias

It appears that Microsoft did not perform a very clean vetting of verb-nouns within its own products.  The Hyper-V folks have a set of cmdlets that are of the form verb-VMxxxx.  It seems like the System Center Virtual Machine Manager folks created
aliases of the form verb-VMxxxx.  So, if I am on a workstation (which I use to remotely manage multiple systems) and want to issue the simple Hyper-V command Get-VM -Name "VM" -ComputerName "Host", it fails because the SCVMM alias
for Get-VM (alias for Get-SCVirtualMachine) takes precedence.
How does one enforce the use of a cmdlet versus an alias?
    Thanks for the assistance.
On a different thought, I would think that Microsoft would have a vetting process to prevent this sort of thing from happening at least within its own products.  I can understand it possibly happening with third party modules getting added in.
    . : | : . : | : . tim

Check out Get-Help about_Command_Precedence. This help file not only lists the precedence but offers some ways to run "hidden" commands.
For testing I set an alias in my $PROFILE like so: Set-Alias -Name Get-Date -Value Test-Connection. When I ran Get-Date it would asked for a computer to ping. To get around this, I set a variable like so: $Var = (Get-Command Get-Date -Type Cmdlet) and then
to get the date I had to enter &$Var.
Considering your frustration I thought you might like this little exceprt from the help file: "The best way to manage command name conflicts is to prevent them."
    Here's the precedence:
    1. Alias
    2. Function
    3. Cmdlet
    4. Native Windows commands
Note: If you have two of the same type (cmdlets, aliases) with the same name then it will run the one that was added to the session more recently.
Edit: Added precedence list and note.

  • Transporting Remote Delta Links--Primary versus Producer Alias

I am having difficultly transporting iViews that are Remote Delta Links.  In the target consumer portal, the delta links iviews import as broken.  According to the SAP documentation, an indentical "producer alias" must be created in the source and target consumer portals.
Currently, I have created the producers in the consumer with specific instance names.  Specifically, in my consumer DEV portal, the producer is created as "BWDEV".  In my consumer QC portal, the producer is created as "BWQC".  As a result, SAP created a "primary alias" of "BWDEV" and "BWQC" in DEV and QC, respectively.
    My question is this:
Are the "producer alias" and the "primary alias" two names for the same object?  A "primary alias" is automatically created when the producer is created, and it matches the name of the producer entered.  In order to transport this content, do I need to create my producers with generic (non-instance) names such as "BW"?
    Thanks,
    Kevin

    Hi Kevin.
Are the "producer alias" and the "primary alias" two names for the same object?
Generally speaking, it is true. You can create additional aliases, but only when instructed to do so in the documentation or by an SAP support person (additional aliases are currently intended for internal SAP usage). Thus for a customer "producer alias" means "primary alias".
A "primary alias" is automatically created when the producer is created, and it matches the name of the producer entered.
It matches the producer ID if the alias is not already used by another system in your portal (refer to [help.sap.com|http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70/helpdata/en/43/2280c70d21400ee10000000a11466f/frameset.htm])
In order to transport this content, do I need to create my producers with generic (non-instance) names such as "BW"?
    Yes, for sure.
