Aliased edges to shapes animated w/ FCE distortion filters

I'm creating a sharp edged shape in Photoshop at 720 x 480 res w/ .9 aspect ratio and importing it into FCE. When I animate it using FCE’s distortion filters like Wave, Ripple, Whirlpool, etc. the edges of the shape become stepped, most noticeably where they curve or slant. I've tried exporting the shapes at a higher resolution and feathering them first by .2 pixels but the aliasing is still obvious. Is this something I will have to accept if I want to use these filters on an imported graphic or is there something else I can do to smooth the edges?

The video does appear smoother in its final format (DVD) but I also discovered that I had an improper setting for my Playback Output Video under Easy Install and when I switched back to the default settings for DV-NTSC, edges displayed considerably smoother. In addition I found that importing a higher resolution graphic (1080 x 720) worked better w/ the distortion filters and gave me smoother edges yet. I am interested in experimenting w/ using the De-interlace filter per your suggestion. Thanks for the tip.

Why am I having trouble cutting and pasting shape animation keyframes?

Thank you for taking a look at my little problem...
I am creating a shape animation - a simple box that "dances". I create eight keyframes with control point changes. After the eighth keyframe I want to begin with the first again, by cutting an pasting the keyframes I've already created. When I try to paste one or more keyframes after the eighth keyframe, the pasted keyframe(s) produce unintended results. Point one seems to reset to 0,0 - and the others do not reflect the pasted keyframe either.
Is there something I am missing about cutting and pasting keyframes in the shape animation parameter?

Thanks Zoom - This will probably be the solution for me. Unfortunately there is some underlying problem going on. I can't get the "repeat" option by clicking and holding on the keyframe, but I can get it in the right column of the keyframe editor. But when I select repeat it doesn't change anything. I even selected "generate keyframes" - nothing. However, the program did slow down as though I had done something, and the "undo repeat" option was available in the edit menu. So the program thinks it did something. I'll keep poking around...

Shape Animation - can't copy/paste keyframes

I'm using bezier masks to remove some talking heads from their lame surroundings. I've set keyframes at the most extreme points of movement, and now want to go back and fill in some additional keyframes, but I am unable to copy/paste shape animation keyframes in the keyframe editor. Any suggestions?

You can turn on record animation, and just move the playhead, then move the control points.

Distortion filters

Is there a way to manipulate one of the many distortion filters to distort into a cylindrical shape, rather than a circular, spherical shape?

Why are Distort filters greyed out in Photoshop CC?

Trying to make a text spiral along a path using the Twirl filter in a Photoshop CC trial. All the distort filters are greyed out. Is this a feature not offered in the trial, or am I doing something else wrong?

Double buffering for shape animation

Hello people,
I'm building an applet which animates some text (a shape with various setting for stroke, fill, etc.) and translating it from x1 to x2 using AffineTransform. How can I clear the screen to create an animation effect and double buffering to avoid flickering? Double buffering can be used with ImageS, but what about ShapeS?

Animation in FCE movie

Hello, and HELP
I've been working on a 7-minute company video. I've animated sections of it in Flash CS4 - the logo; customer map, etc. I've tried every-which-way to export the movie, and bring it into FCE. My last attempt converted a png.mov to flv with DVKitchen - and the bit looks great when I bring the clip in, but as soon as I render it, it looks like crap. How can I get the best results with an exported Flash movie??

I set the size of the flash animation to 1920 x 1080, to match the screen size in FCE. The Flash file is set at 29.7, also to match. Best I could get so far is to export a Quicktime movie using Animation; millions of colours; best.
Once it is in FCE, I export the whole movie using Quicktime default - which also seems to work best.
Any animation I am bringing in to FCE ends up being less-than....
I feel a bit lost in the woods here, walking in circles, trying the same things over and over again.... and wishing I knew someone who know more!! Thanks for your time!

Animations and FCE 3.5

I have been searching the internet and I can't find an answer.
I have Final Cut Express 3.5 and I want to add animations into my video.
The animations I want to add would be similiar to a movie introduction credits (ie- Kiss Kiss Bang Bang).
I do not know if you add the animation to your video in FCE, or do you add the video to your animation in an animation program.
Also, what would be the best program for this. I have Flash, but I hear it's hard to work with Flash and FCE. What are your thoughts on Blender?

Fce- distorted/ elongated faces and images

My fce movie appears okay on my mac - but not on other dvd players... distorted/ squished/ elongated.
Any suggestions?

Try View>Level>and check the "Show as Square Pixels" item.
TV and computers display images differently. Selecting this option simulates (sort of) how a picture will look on a TV.
A better option is to lace a TV/monitor to your mac and watch on that.
Maybe you shot the image in 4:3 aspect ratio and are using a 16:9 Easty Setup or visa versa!!

Animating in FCE

I'm an Adobe Premiere user trying to transition to FC. One function in FC that has baffled me is how to animate clips (moving them, scaling them, applying filters). What seems like it should be intuitive, isn't. The instruction manual doesn't make it clear. Is there a tutorial somewhere that I can download that will simply give me a step-by-step walk through of the animation features and how to use them?

I'm not that familiar with Premier. So forgive me if I'm redundant. Remember you basics of motion and you can use just about any program. All movement is based on an X, Y and Z axis. X is left to right, Y is up and down and Z is diagnol (sp). Using keyframes you move you video up, down, left, right from one point to another. The scale function allows you to make the image larger and smaller.
Keep in mind that when using scale you will get pixelation when making video larger. This is not necessarily true of still graphics if they are imported at higher than a 72dpi ration.
That's the basics. Time to read.

Imported Music From Soundtrack to FCE = Distorted?

I edited a song in Soundtrack and after importing it into FCE for the purpose of using it in a video, the waveform is blown out. What is the cause behind this? It sounds normal in Soundtrack and upon playing it in FCE it starts out fine but as it progresses it sounds horrible.

iTune purchased songs have build-in DRM thus preventing the use in PRO app like Soundtrack, Final Cut etc.
That could explain the problem.
Otherwise, open your exported AIFF in quicktime player and check the volume playback to see if the exporting process has induced the distorsion.

Shape Animation Mask Help

Hey guys, i currently have a single shape, a red line. Starting at the top, it then rotates 180 degree to the bottom area. I need to mask off the line from going into the stands. How do i do this? I tried simply adding a rectangle mask to the line, but the rectangle rotates with the line?

But I don't understand why you need to mask the shape to limit the line's length. Why not just draw the line on the shape layer at the length that you need?
By the way, I strongly recommend that people new to After Effects begin at the beginning and work their way through some introductory materials so that they understand some of the basic concepts like precompositions and drawing paths. This is a good place to start:

Jagged pics when animated in FCE

Hi all.
I have JPG and TIF files that I've imported into my project.
As long as they're static, they look fine.
What I'm trying to do though is do simple animation.
Each pictures is 4 seconds.
The pic goes from 0-100 opacity for the first second, stays at 100 for 2 seconds and fades back out for the last second.
At the same time I have animated horizontal movement using a beginning and ending key frame.
The animation works, but looks horrible.
The pics are completely jagged like every other horizontal line is offset.
I've tried searching online and in this forum, have tried different combinations of filters and no luck.
Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Tom - I'm looking at it on the monitor, and if I export it to an MOV it looks the same.

Need information on FCE video filters

I am in post and have a shot that has the sky as a background. I used a 3CCD camera (DVX-100B) and notice that after a while the sky background really begins to look "hot," meaning it begins to glare around the subject and it's a bit annoying to me at least. This is mainly evident when I watch it on my television, not the laptop.
Is there a video filter or video fix that can bring down this bright, "hot" look? I brought down the opacity already about 15% but wonder if there is more I can do?

You might try using a garbage matte and fiddling with brightness.
There is also a very interesting free filter that Patrick Sheffield wrote called Captain's Blowout Fixer that looks like it could do the job very nicely, lots of control. It was written for FCP and it may also work in FCE.

FCE- Audio filters

I just started using FCE v.2.01 and i'm having a hard time with the audio filters. I think either i'm not applying them properly or their not working right. I've been trying to get rid of some tape hiss and wind noise on my audio and i cant reshoot or go to an audio house to do voice overs. I know FCE has voice overs but I was hoping the filters would help. If someone has knowledge of the audio filters in FCE 2. please write back. thank you.
