Aliased Embedded Fonts

Is it possible to embed a font in Flash and have it displayed as though it was a device font? In other words, can embedded fonts be aliased?
Using the bitmap-text option doesn't work, Flash tends to screw up a lot of the character spacing. I haven't found any pixel fonts that mimic Arial, Verdana and Tahoma accurately. Setting the stage quality to low does alias the fonts but they become fragmented.
Using device fonts is an option but, as far as I understand, some browsers/operating systems will take it upon themselves to anti-alias the text.

Because some common device fonts below a certain size aren't very legible when they are anti-aliased, and some fonts including Verdana and Courier New just look horrible when anti-aliased, most developers would know that. Device fonts below a certain size aren't anti-aliased in Flash on Windows (not sure about Mac) but I would like to embed the fonts to ensure they are available regardless of the operating system. I know this is an old problem with Flash but I was hoping the new text rendering features in FP10 would have solved the problem... I guess not.

• Embedded font issues -- Flex not measuring properly

I started this out in one thread ( http://forums.adobe.com/thread/470702 ) and it has progressed into a new, bigger issue. I embedded fonts using the code below. Flex is not measuring them properly or the font I'm using is vertically challenged. I suspect the font I am embedding has different vertical spacing than the default font. I have determined the fonts are embedding by rotating the containers.
Here's an example of what I'm getting:
The right side radio button is the raw display (height works out to 23), the left side radio button I forced the height to 15. Both the radio buttons are set to exactly the same y coordinate. You can see the right hand text is not centered on the radio button. I don't want to go thru the hassle of adjusting every single component height to make the font look centered plus that's an ugly workaround.
I don't think there is anything wrong with my code nor do I think a font swf will help. I sure would like to know what's going on but it is beyond my understanding. Here's my thought. I like the default font the compiler uses when I DON"T embed fonts, looks like this:
I figure if I could embed this font, everything would work properly. I just don't where this font lives. The docs indicate the default font is _serif but it looks more like _sans to me. And I don't know the hierarchy for my platform.
So... Does anyone know either how to fix this measurement issue or where I can find THE True Type font or swf or something that Flex uses as a default so I could embed it?
/* CSS file */
@font-face {
font-family: MainFont;
src: url("assets/fonts/verdana.TTF");
unicode-range: U+0020-U+007E;
advancedAntiAliasing: true;
@font-face {
font-family: MainFont;
src: url("assets/fonts/verdanab.TTF");

advancedAntiAliasing: true;
fontWeight: bold;
fontStyle: italic;
global {
font-family: MainFont;

First off, yes there was a correction to the left hand radio button. I forced the height of the button to be different and that seemed to help center things
After a bit of beating my head against the way, I decided to run a simpler test. I set up a case where I had default fonts side by side with embedded fonts. Since my default.css file had Verdana I decided to use a Verdana embedded font. I figured I could compare them directly and maybe play with advanced anti-aliasing at the same time. I've attached the files (change the txt extension to mxml)
The result was a somewhat of a surprise. I didn't realize that all text really wasn't centered on the component (eg radio button, checkbox) at my default size and below. I do see the small pixel shift, especially in the Button.
So... I have found the "real" font declaration in the defaults.css file, am seeing the small pixel shift with embedded fonts, that using advanced anti-aliasing can help on smaller text, and realized I have to be very careful where I use font sizes smaller than default. I'm guessing that the "perfect" default size on my system would be 12 since that appears what my Verdana.ttf font is based on. My defaults.css file has the font size set at 10. The inability to measure properly is exacerbated when the fonts are embedded.
Now the real question -- anyone have a clever fix?

Please help me.Thanks in advance.

FangAvatar,
looks like the same question as the other one we are talking about. The Live docs page
http://www.adobe.com/livedocs/flex/3/html/help.html?content=fonts_04.html
has ane xample with rotated labels just oevr half way down the page.
If you are having trouble navigating with this link, just go to the root
http://www.adobe.com/livedocs/flex/3/html/help.html
then in the contents bar on the left open up
User interfaces
...using fonts
......using embedded fonts
the section is just above the heading "Using advanced anti-aliasing"

• Embedding fonts in Bridge (Photoshop CS5)

Hi folks!
I'm sorry for posting but I still have trouble with creating PDF via Bridge.
I have sveral PSD-Files (CS5 made) using several image- and textlayers.
Now I want to create multipage-PDF using Bridge that comes with PS CS5.
Works fine so far but Bridge does not embed those fonts used in the PSD!
Seems to me Bridge just merges all layers to one pixelbased image and saves it in PDF-format.
But that's no good deal!
In CS2 there was a much better solution in PS2 allowing to create multipaged PDF with embedded fonts.
Is there any chance to embed fonts with Bridge?
Plz don't tell me to use Acrobat or InDesign because I'm only using PS CS5.
Thx!

• Unable to load embedded fonts in TlF / FlowLeafElement

dears,
I use TextFlowUtil.importFromString and FlowLeafElement to make each some text have its own style, every some words have diffirent color, fontFamily, fontSize....etc
that is done here in the text attribute in this xml tag, and TextFlowUtil.importFromString and FlowLeafElement make taht perfect:

The problem is that i need to embed fonts, by this fontFamily="Arial" you can set font name which you want, but if i set font name which is embedded it won't work, like : fontFamily="ttf"
the embedded code is :
[Embed(source='/Resources/majallab.ttf',fontName='ttf',mimeType='application/x-font',embed AsCFF='true')]
var font1:Class; //This is only used to compile the code
I use Flex SDK 4.5,
what can i do ?
Thank you in advance,

To use embedded fonts in a Flex component, the fontFamily for the component needs to be set to an embedded font that is in the same SWF as the other embedded fonts in the TextFlow. See my blog for more details

Hi Jin-Huang
But when I use Simple ASProject with SDK 4.1 then it works fine but when I create Flex project then it give error
with SWFContext.
I think it's a issue of swfcontext or AS comunication with Spark components.
Please let me know if any solution.

• How can I create a PDF with embedded fonts (not a subset of the font) from Excel?

I need to create PDF's from Excel spreadsheets. The PDF needs to have embedded fonts but every time I create one it only has a subset of the embedded font. I have tried setting preferences in the Acrobat add in (unchecked the "Subset Embedded Fonts" option and also tried with the Subset Embedded Fonts checked but the percentage set to only 1% in an attempt to force full font to be embedded.)
I also tried opening the resulting PDF with Acrobat Pro XI but could not figure out how to add the font in.
A method to accomplish the results from either tool would be great.

Anna;
Unless you can add those fonts to your system via the Font book and then substitute them in iPhoto, you'll have to either user the available fonts or create your own pages, 8.5 x 11, in an image editor like Photoshop Elements and use them on pages that are one photo per page. Other's have done that with some success.
If you has PS or PSE create an 8.5 x 11" canvas at 300 dpi. Then you can add your photos, add text (if PS can use the text), and create your own layout.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

• Problem with PDF export and embedded font (characters disappear)

Designer: Crystal Reports 2008 SP 2
Engine: CR4E 2.0 SP2 (runtime_12.2.203)
Hi there!
we found a problem in the pdf export. It seems like there would be a problem with the embedded fonts, the problem is as follows:
Rpt file with, for example only a text box which contains the german string " Änderungs Schlüssel ".
Export the Rpt file with CR4E to a pdf file.
When we open the pdf file in Adope Reader 8, the text appears to be correct,
but if we print the PDF file from the Adope Reader, the text changes to " nderungs Schl sselu201C,
here we are missing ther german umlaute.
When we open the file for example with an alternative PDF reader like Foxit Reader, there they are also missing.
After i found some posts here in the forum, there are people facing the same problem, since i couldn't find a solution in the forum, we build a little workaround for it that works for us.
For all of you that have the same problem here the workaround:
We used the IText JAVA library, this jar can can help as to fix the PDF file so the text is displayed correctly.
Here the code:
ReportClientDocument doc = new ReportClientDocument();
doc.setReportAppServer(ReportClientDocument.inprocConnectionString);
doc.open("C:\XY.rpt", OpenReportOptions._openAsReadOnly);
//... database logon,.....
InputStream inputStream = doc.getPrintOutputController().export(ReportExportFormat.PDF);
inputStream = PDFHealer.heal(inputStream);
//... write the stream some where

The helper class using IText:
import java.io.ByteArrayInputStream;
import java.io.ByteArrayOutputStream;
import java.io.IOException;
import java.io.InputStream;
import com.lowagie.text.Document;

public static InputStream heal(InputStream in) throws DocumentException, IOException
try
ByteArrayOutputStream out = new ByteArrayOutputStream();
PdfReader reader = new PdfReader(in);
// we retrieve the total number of pages
int n = reader.getNumberOfPages();
// step 1: creation of a document-object
Document document = new Document();
// step 2: we create a writer that listens to the document
PdfWriter writer = PdfWriter.getInstance(document, out);
// step 3: we open the document
document.open();
// step 4: we add content
PdfContentByte cb = writer.getDirectContent();
int i = 0;
while( i < n )
document.newPage();
i++;
PdfImportedPage page1 = writer.getImportedPage(reader, i);
cb.addTemplate(page1, 0, 0);
// step 5: we close the document
document.close();
ByteArrayInputStream ret = new ByteArrayInputStream(out.toByteArray());
out.close();
return ret;
finally
in.close();

• My computer is on a local network. When I access my computer as a local user, Firefox does not render any @font-face embedded font correctly for any website.

I have tried completely uninstalling and reinstalling, creating a clean profile, and other things. The CSS is correct because it works for every other supported browser...event this particlar installation when used with a network login. Other computers on our network (but not ALL) seem to have similar problems, but only when someone logs on to the machine locally (not via Windows Active Directory).
The browser attempts to render the embedded font, but it appears jagged, so it's not that the CSS isn't getting seen, the browser just doesn't render it smoothly. Are there any particular settings that I should look at? On every machine I've tested, both the gfx.downloadable_fonts.enabled (true) and gfx.use_text_smoothing_setting (false) configuration settings have been the same.
I realize that there could be some differences regarding network local computer policy for network logins vs. local logins, but I have no idea how that might pertain to Firefox specifically.

When trying to upload a PDF to an interactive site I get the announcement: "The attached PDF file references a non-embedded font Tahoma. Please remove file, embed the font and reattach."
I could not get rid of the Tahoma font in the WORD file.
How do I embed this, or in fact any other font ?

Thank you very much !
Indeed, I was unaware of the enormous number of options that can be selected when converting a WORD file to PDF.
I went thru the settings and found the right one for embedding the fonts.
Thanks again !

• Why do PDFs created with some print presets show the error message "cannot extract embedded font."

Whenever I create a pdf from InDesign using a press-quality preset, I get an error message upon opening the file. The error message says that an embedded font cannot be extracted.
InDesign indicates the font is not present in the file.
In Acrobat's properties, the font in the error message is listed and shows that it is not embedded, and that the actual font is unknown.
Running the "embed fonts" from preflight fixups doesn't help.

Found this fix in Preflight: Under prepress, I selected my destination, which is sheetfed offpress (CMYK) and ran the analyze and fix. The updated file opened without the error message.

• Embedded Fonts are not shown anymore

When I create a PDF from a Word Doc, the embedded Fonts are not shown anymore. In the previous Version it was working perfectly. My version is currently 11.0.10.

Thank you for your feedback. The Job im using is simple take a word document converting it into a pdf format. If this is done I will see it in my Acrobat view. There is no fonts at all. The System is notifying me that the font "ETBFGYI+DIN-Regular" are not embedded. And there will be some character not shown or printed correctly. I didn't change anything on the setting of Acrobat. I'm using this Acrobat almost for 2 years and I never had any problem. The Problem came up after the last update of the software to version 11.01.10.

• Spark DataGrid Embedded Font Quandary

01. In everything that follows, I am talking about the latest [21328] version of the SDK, not that I believe that my problems have anything to do with that release, just so anyone interested and willing to help will know the version.
02. My application happens to be rooted in AIR's WindowedApplication, but again, I do not think that has any impact on my problems; I believe the same results would obtain for a Flex Application.
03. I have a custom renderer for the Spark DataGrid which extends DefaultGridItemRenderer. It works fine. Its primary job is to change the font characteristics of each row in the list as a visual clue to the user as to the specific nature of the content that is accessible. Some entries are just in the Regular font, some in Bold, some in Italic, and some in Bold-Italic.
04. I have, for most of the project, embedded the necessary fonts like this:
[Embed (source="C:/Windows/Fonts/ArnoPro-Caption.otf", fontName="ArnoPro_BI_4",
fontStyle="italic",
fontWeight="bold",
mimeType="application/x-font",
embedAsCFF="true",
unicodeRange="U+0021-U+00ff, U+20ac-U+20ac")]
private const ArnoPro_BI_4:Class;
As I said, that all works just as advertized. But, that method of embedding carries the somewhat painful burden of slower compilations, so for the last 24 hours I have unseccessfully been trying to replace that with:
[Embed (source = "../resources/assets/ArnoPro_BI_4.swf", symbol="ArnoPro_BI_4")]
private const ArnoPro_BI_4:Class;
where the swf file was produced via fontswf, using this incantation:
fontswf -4 -u U+0021-U+00ff,U+20ac-U+20ac -b -i -a ArnoPro_BI_4 -o ArnoPro_BI_4.swf C:/Windows/Fonts/ArnoPro-Caption.otf
06. By all that is holy, the two different means of embedding the font ought to yield the same result, but they do not. I have debugging code inserted to print out the list of fonts upon initiation of the application, and they are identical. Both means of embedding do succeed in getting the embedded fonts into the .swf, but the attempt to use the fonts fails using the second approach.
There is, of course, no change being made to the code in the item renderer which merely uses setStyle() to effect the row-by-row result. The result in the second case is that the only style of the embedded font that renders is 'regular'.
07. I have used the 'keep-generated' facility to look at the code being generated by the mxmlc compiler and can see that different code is emitted, but it does not help me find a fix to the problem. Both forms of the meta-tag do something; both methods of embedding seem to correctly register themselves with the FontManager, but only the method of embedding which actually performs the transcoding during compilation seems to result in a set of registered fronts which can be found and correctly used to render output based on the runtime setting of the font style.

Thank for the reply
I hoped that my posting indicated how the fonts in the the .swf file were constructed. The "-4", argument to the command-line tool, fontswf, as far as I can tell, is the precise analog to the "embedAsCFF" argument in the [Embed] syntax. That is what makes it so perplexing. Given all the external documentation that is available for each tool/methodology, I would have thought that the resultant bytecodes, classes, flags, whatever, would have been identical. The only difference would be the timing of when the transcoding took place.
Since it is clearly more efficient to only transcode whatever set of fonts an application needs once, not once per build/test turn-around, I would really like to make the fontswf workflow work. For those of us outside the beneficial environment of your licensed tools, the kindly-provided alternative to the facilities built into Flash Professional and/or Flash Builder give us the greatest degree of productivity.
Whoever has access to the source code for Font [I can only see the uninteresting FontAsset in the SDK] can probably determine what difference might result from mxmlc working with this intermediate output, when inline transcoding is 'tagged':
package
import mx.core.FontAsset;
[ExcludeClass]
[Embed(fontName="ArnoPro_IT_4", _resolvedSource="C:/WINDOWS/Fonts/ArnoPro-ItalicCaption.otf", fontStyle="italic", _line="1189", _pathsep="true", embedAsCFF="true", fontWeight="normal", unicodeRange="U+0021-U+00ff, U+20ac-U+20ac", source="C:/Windows/Fonts/ArnoPro-ItalicCaption.otf", _column="2", exportSymbol="AIRZoom_ArnoPro_IT_4", _file="G:/FP/AIRZoom/src/AIRZoom_AS.as", mimeType="application/x-font")]
public class AIRZoom_ArnoPro_IT_4 extends mx.core.FontAsset
public function AIRZoom_ArnoPro_IT_4()
super();
versus this, when swf extraction is 'tagged':
package
import mx.core.FontAsset;
[ExcludeClass]
[Embed(fontName="ArnoPro_IT_4", _resolvedSource="C:/WINDOWS/Fonts/ArnoPro-ItalicCaption.otf", fontStyle="italic", _line="1191", _pathsep="true", embedAsCFF="true", fontWeight="normal", unicodeRange="U+0021-U+00ff, U+20ac-U+20ac", source="C:/Windows/Fonts/ArnoPro-ItalicCaption.otf", _column="2", exportSymbol="AIRZoom_ArnoPro_IT_4", _file="G:/FP/AIRZoom/src/AIRZoom_AS.as", mimeType="application/x-font")]
public class AIRZoom_ArnoPro_IT_4 extends mx.core.FontAsset
public function AIRZoom_ArnoPro_IT_4()
super();
The only difference is that value for '_line' which probably only indicates that one of the two processes has a comment or empty line somewhere.

• Problem with embedding fonts in Illustrator CS5

I have just installed Illustrator CS5, and have tested creating a PDF document based on one of my existing files, as well as a new file.
When I open these PDF documents in Adobe Acrobat Pro 9, I am told that Acrobat cannot access one of the embedded fonts (Korinna BT).
I have had no issues with embedding this font in Illustrator CS4, and (strangely), when I open these files in other PDF viewers (Preview and PDFPenPro), they report no issues.
Has anyone else experienced this issue?
I have removed and reinstalled the font in question, and tested/verified that the font is OK - but still not joy.
Regards
Jeremy

The error message I get is:
"Cannot extract the embedded font 'MVZTIW+KorinnaITCbyBT-Regular'. Some characters may not display or print correctly."
When I check the fonts in the PDF in "Document Properties" in Adobe Acrobat the following is shown:
"KorinnaITCbyBT-Regular
Type: TrueType
Encoding: Ansi
Actual Font: Adobe Serif MM
Actual Font Type: Type 1"
It seems that Illustrator is adding some strange "code" ('MVZTIW') to the beginning of the font, which means the actual font can't be found and extracted.
