Alien (Director's Cut) - not the Director's Cut!

I'm a fan of the film Alien and have the original version on DVD, but have never seen the Director's Cut.  I noticed recently that it was listed on BT Vision Box Office and sat down to watch it today, eager to see the alternative version with the extra scenes.  It turned out to be an identical version to the movie I have seen several times before.  I just paid £2.50 to watch a movie I already own on DVD!
A quick google confirms what I had thought - the Director's Cut is supposed to include a number of scenes that are missing from the original version.  These scenes were definitely not in the version I just saw on BT Vision, so it has been mis-labelled.  Be warned!

They're difficult to compare. Before it all went down the tubes with Resurrection each of the movies were from an entirely different genre. Alien was a haunted house movie, Aliens was a war movie and Alien 3 (I'm one of the few who actually liked it) was a psychological drama. Each excelled in it's own way, but Cameron's was far more run of the mill than the other two and much more quotable. "Get away from her, you **bleep**" and my own personal favourite which I still use, "did IQs just drop sharply while I was away" were the high points. I didn't really like what Cameron did to the lifecycle of the alien. The introduction of the queen was far less shocking than the concept of the cocooned victims becoming the eggs rather than just being fodder for them. For sheer atmosphere the winner for me would still be Alien, but for shameless crowd pleasing you add an s.
It'll be fascinating to see Ridley's return to LV426 at the beginning of next month.

It's not the overlays they are "on" so can anyone advise me please, by the way the "L" doesn't appear in the bottom left hand corner either? and by the way how can I get rid of that irritating Blue badge saying "AutoFill your contact details" all mine are in "address book" already!

    You can't drag a transition into the canvas. If you're dragginmg a transition from the effects tab you drag it between the edit point of two clips in the timeline.
    Make sure show edit overlays is turned on in the Canvas view popup.

    The XML format Premiere uses is not supported in FCPX. The only way I know of that may work is to go through FCP7 and then use 7toX to get to FCPX.

  • Jump cuts to beat when NOT the first clip

    Hi I want to add jump cuts to a sound clip that is not the first one in the project.
    After a lot of false starts in trying to get jump cuts onto a clip when the music was just
    (a) attached to an exisitng film clip (green underneath the clip)  - Won't work. or
    (b) a pinned - sound clip first, movie clip second but where the sound does not butt up against another background clip (wrapped in purple)  - Won't work
    I've got it to work where it is background music - sound first, movie second (wrapped round in green). I've opened up the Clip Trimmer, added the beats on the beat with the 'M' key - highlighted the movie cliip - selected Clip>Jump cut to Beat Markers> chosen a frame rate BUT only where the background clip is the FIRST background.
    If you add more songs to a project and go through the same sequence as before the number of frames is not greyed out but the app just doesn't do anything. All the tutorials online only ever show you adding jump cuts to the one and only music track but never to the second one.
    This is v. frustating. Sounds like a bug to me.
    Is there a way of breaking up the project so that it will play as one continuous film and so allowing different parts of the film to be the first piece of background music?
    Thanks.

  • Data Guard: standby archivelog files not the same as the primary archivelog

    From reading the Data Guard doco, one gets the impression that that the standby redo archive logs are just a mirror of those from the primary, that the shipped and applied archived redo logs from the primary are what end up in the standby archive directories.
    However I have noted that the files are not the same (md5sum is different), which is concerning as using Oracle's archive log naming recommendation, the files have identical names.
    Does this mean that the Standbys redologs can not be used as a source of redo logs if one had to restore using a backup of the primary database?
    i.e. Can you recover using an RMAN backup of the primary, and redo logs from the standby?

    Hi MSK, I agree, that's exactly what I thought. I'm confused though why the logs do not match. Perhaps it is just metadata in the log that has changed, not redo data.
    Anyone have any knowledge on why the archivelogs are different on the standby to those on the primary?

    I chose a persona that is black with doodled hearts, and it will stay until I close and reopen Firefox. When Firefox starts it defaults to a blue sky and pink flowers on a branch. I downloaded The personas add-on thinking that would fix it, but it has not helped. Will I have to rechoose the persona I want each time? Am I just missing something?

    Firefox does not have a built-in "Run" option on downloads for security reasons. If you "Run" an item, your anti-virus/anti-spyware may not have an opportunity to fully examine the contents until it is already installed on your hard drive. Result: damage, if infected, is already installed on your system.
    With that in mind, you can install the following add-on, but you accept the risk mentioned above ('''NOTE:''' the developer has not updated this product -- OR any of his other 7 extensions -- to be compatible beyond Firefox 3.6.x; therefore, when you upgrade to a more current version of Firefox, you may lose the functionality of the add-on if the developer does not update it.):

    Any quick tips on what to do? My project is small - while monitoring my CPU usage it never goes above 30 while running the project - I've got 2.78 GB of free disk space - 4Gig Ram - I dont use my IMAC OSX 10.5.5 for anything but Logic? Hoping to get around this CONSTANT issue - thanks for your help.

    Well, if you are saying you have only 2.78 GB's of space on your hard drive, then you'll want to have more. You should leave about 10-15% of your drive free.

    I'm running LP8 - I have an IMAC OSX 10.5.5 - 2.4 processor - 4 GB RAM - M-Audio Fast Track Pro interface (USB direct to MAC) - I do NOT have an external hard drive ( sounds like I should ? - although I was told by others my system would be sufficient) - I use ALL instruments/track options ( midi etc) and will need to in the future - I want to be able to run a full music project 10-15 tracks. So far I'm running 4-5 tracks -(1) midi - the rest are audio with little to no effects ( in one project I'm using an LP8 template but deleted most of the tracks to cut down on the load ). Don't know if I can freeze these tracks-I'm new to this - thats why I'm looking for options ........ i was also using a 3rd party software in the project - Steinberg Groove Agent 3 (drums) but it was giving me the same error ..even when it was the ONLY track in the project....(its not fully compatible) - however I was finally able to create a full drum track with GA3 - play the midi data back - and record it to an audio track - therefore deleting the midi data I was having issues with and keeping the drums.... hope this helps?

    Perfect. Well here are some suggestions:
    1) Logic 7, 8 and 9 all have a "freeze" function. Logic 9 has a new "bounce in place" function which I haven't used yet. These will make temporary audio files of your MIDI instruments so that you are able to play them as finished audio for the most part and free up CPU power. ( I haven't yet used "bounce in place", I just got Logic 9.) This will help with MIDI instruments quite a bit, and you can still go back and change them by un-freezing... I guess "thawing" would be the proper term.
    2) The reason I was asking about your audio interface is because I was wondering what you had available. You very definitely want to record to a non-system (on that Logic nor your operating system are on) drive. Firewire is much superior to USB, which is why I'm glad to hear you are using USB as your audio in. By using Firewire in and Firewire out, on an iMac, you would be halving the bandwidth. In your case you are not.
    You will add very much stability to your Logic work by adding an external Firewire drive and recording audio to it, and working on Logic projects there! If you have the money, I'd go with Firewire 800, which is frankly overkill, but why not. Firewire 400 drives will work fine for you. Add one and many of the overload messages will disappear, simply because right now you are pulling information from (in the form of calculating what the virtual instruments and Logic are doing) and writing information to (in the form of writing what those instruments and Logic are resulting in) to the same disk.
    Try these two things and get back to us. I think you'll be very happy with the results.
    It's also important to pay attention to your buffer size. When it is not important for you to play with it in real time, you want to make it be 1024. Otherwise as low as possible. So when you are recording audio to a MIDI drum track, you'd want it to be very low so you can play along accurately. When you have all that done, and are editing MIDI only, then put the buffer higher. When mixing, put it higher.
    Let me know how this works, good luck, L

    Ok Great - Thanks - makes sense - I was using a Lacie with Protools an my PC ( it recently crashed) - I was under the impression I would have enough processing power with out it on the MAC.
    Looks like I can pick one up for just a little over $100 ( I'm rolling in that kind of cash) ... please clarify though - you stated: "Firewire is much superior to USB, which is why I'm glad to hear you are using USB as your audio in. By using Firewire in and Firewire out, on an iMac, you would be halving the bandwidth. As stated in an earlier reply, if you only have 2 or 3 gigs of free space on your Mac hard drive, processing power is NOT the problem. Your boot disc is way too full. You should have at least 20-30GB free.
    Running a second drive for the audio side will, of course, help, but you MUST clear out the main hard drive (or fit a larger one) before you run into even more serious problems.

    Well, you have enough processing power, that isn't the issue. All the processing power in the world won't matter if you have 64 megabytes of RAM, there will be a bottleneck. Another bottleneck is with data transference. Like I said, when using a single drive to transfer date from as well as to- which is what you are doing when you are using Logic, running within the scope of the operating system, and hosting virtual instruments, all of which is writing the resulting audio information to the same drive, at the same time, then you are creating another problem. But you don't have to do that, by sending the audio written to another drive other than the one the audio is being generated from.
    In other words, your processing power is both faster than and irrelevant to the physical limitations of the hard drive itself.
    Another bottleneck would be if you were recording tracks on a Firewire in, and sending that to and external Firewire drive out. This is one of the limitations of the iMac, there is no way to add what is called another bus, which is simply another pipeline for data transference. You can get around that with a Mac Pro, in which you add another internal hard drive, which connects directly to the motherboard, and has its own bus. Or by adding another Firewire PCIe card, which will add another Firewire bus, again, with its own data transference. On an iMac, you have one Firewire bus, and one USB bus.
    Clear? You can imagine these as pipes of water. The more pipes you have leading to and from a location the faster it will go.
    USB, in your case, is a dedicated pipeline in. Nothing (well, your mouse, maybe a flash drive) is using that pipeline. Your Firewire is a pipeline out, in this case- you could reverse this, it doesn't matter*. If you use Firewire in and out, then you are sending water flowing in both directions in the same pipe. It will work, but not as well. By adding a dedicated bus, you would be adding another pipe to flow in one way, while the original flowed the other way. No impedances.
    I don't see why you can't use the Lacie drive you already have, though. It's quite likely your crash wasn't due to it. No need to buy another drive, if it's Firewire, anyway. Just give it a shot- this isn't a cure all, but just good audio practice. Let me know how it pans out. Good luck, L
    *Firewire is better than USB in all situations. But you seem to be going a track or two of USB audio in, so I'd use USB for that. For light use it's fine. Then you can use your superior Firewire bus to write the audio to the external Firewire drive.

    L - Thanks for laying that out in simple terms - learning a ton and loving it ( when things work) - I will pick up another Lacie - my old Lacie for my PC crashed - I'm better off starting from scratch ( I'm still trying to retrive some data of the old one) ... I'll let you know how it works. I would have got an external drive outright but the Logic Certified guys at Apple told me I would not need one - sounds like this is the big problem. I'll use the freeze method when needed also....... maybe I'll have better luck with Groove Agent 3 with the external drive.
    Much appreciated-

    Groove Agent 3 loads samples into memory so I doubt if your luck will change.
    The -first- thing I would do is clear some space on your hard drive, my feeling is that OSX is writing swap files and the drive head is working overtime to try and find free space to write. That in itself could cause an overload.
    Free drive space now or expect more problems than you're currently experiencing.

In your case you are not" ....are you GLAD to hear I am using USB as in - We may have found the problem .... go external to free up processing ? Please confirm.
    Thanks again

  • Save link as not the same as Save target as in IE. How do I get svat target as in firfox?

    I am new to Firefox. Downloaded FF4. It is excellent except for I thing, I download files from rapidshare, etc, and Firefox is missing the "save target as" of IE. I tried "save link as", but it does not work correctly - at least not the same as IE. Is there an add-on or tweek to give firefox the "save target as"? or make "save link as" work the same as "save target as"?

    You can drag them out of that folder (or use Cut & Paste) in the Bookmarks Manager (Library) to a more convenient position.

  • How do I resize an image within a drop zone (not the drop zone itself) in motion 5?

    How do I resize an image within a drop zone (not the drop zone itself) in motion 5?

    I think others would be able to help if you describe a little more why you'd like to do this. Given that drop zones are a way of passing images into Motion that you want to manipulate, resizing a drop zone is the equivalent of resizing the image.
    If you're having a problem with an image from Final Cut being too big or too small, select the Drop Zone in the inspector and make sure the Fit parameter is set to 'Fit' - 'Center' will result in images dropped not being scaled to fit the Drop Zone. 'Stretch' will force the dropped image to fill the space defined by the drop zone,
    If the image is already cropped and scaled up in Final Cut Pro, that is the information that Motion gets - you can't scale down the image to see more of the edges that have been cropped off.
    If you want more than one copy of the image passed via the drop zone, use Make Clone Layer from the Object menu.

  • Safari logs me out of logged in web pages - not the same problem as other similar post - please read.

    Before you crucify me please read the problem I've outlined below, because it's not the same issue other people are having. I did research the forums for the particular issue I'm having and it's not the same as what's already been posted. Please let me explain.
    Here is my machine info.
    iMac running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 on 2.5 GHZ Intel core.
    Safari Version 5.1.7
    I run two instances of Safari. I will have 1 safari browser window open on the left side of my screen with 7 tabs all on pages that require login. I run a second instance of Safari on the right side of my screen with only one tab open logged into 1 web page.
    Here's what happens. Ocassionaly when switching the focus from one browser to the other all of my logged in web pages will refresh and I'll be logged out of all my logged in web pages, on both open browsers. There's never a certain amount of time that this happens, I've had it happen 3-4 hours into my work day and I've had it happen 10 minutes into my work day. I've also had this occure when I'm putting the focus from one browser window to the other and then I go to resize the width of the window I just put the focus on.
    I'm thinking that there must be some setting or short cut "gesture" built into Safari that I'm triggering to make this happen, however I have looked at all the settings and can't seem to find anything that would cause this.
    Any help or advice is apprecaited.

    BDAqua - I have two Safari windows open - I guess in my semi technical mind that equated to two instances. But your probably right, just one instance of app with two windows open.
    About two minutes after I posted my question, I was doing some work in one of my tabbed web pages, as I pressed the submit button to update the record on that page and as the page was refreshing I clicked my mouse on the second open Safari window to put the focus on that window, as soon as I put the focus on the second open browser I got logged out of all my logged in tabs in both windows.
    The time it happened was sometime between 14:30 and 14:35
    I'm looking at the Sytem Log. IN the filter I typed Safari and nothing came up from today in the log.
    Just looking at "All Messages" between the hours of 1430 and 1435 their are no messages about safari, just the following.
    1/10/13 2:32:22.000 PM kernel: IOSurface: buffer allocation size is zero
    1/10/13 2:32:25.000 PM kernel: IOSurface: buffer allocation size is zero

  • Adding an effect to a sound, not the entire track

    Hey All, I am looking to simply add a effect to a single sound, not the entire track, is that possible with Logic? I am coming from pro tools, and I know I was able to do that there, I was hoping I could do the same here. Thanks so much!

    By add effect, I assume you mean add some delay or reverb one one particular note or word. Several ways to do this. Put the effect plug-in on a bus return, and then automate the send level to come up/down for that one incident.
    Another way would be to make a 2nd track (audio or midi), Insert the effect on that track, and cut the phrase or note, and move down to that 2nd track. So the whole track would be dry, and that one word, note, would have the effect on the next track.
    Make sure levels are similar

  • # of objects, not the size of the objects, determine size of a Collection

    There are objects, and references to objects.
    Do, List / Set / Map , etc. just maintain a list of 32-bit addresses for their contained objects? What more does a Collection need, memory-wise, to add an element? The size of the objects in a Collection should not matter?
    listA.add(new Integer(2));  // listA size grows by 32-bits
    listB.add(new GiantSizedClass());  // listB size grows by 32-bitsI started thinking about Collections being able to dynamically grow in runtime. I heard this is complex, but it "looks" like all you do is append a memory address and incriment a counter? This sounds quick, easy, and incorrect. I don't understand. Thanks.

    jverd, ejp: you have always been there with quick responses to help me. ejp, i purchased your book "Fundamental Networking in Java". When I start programming again, your book about RMI is on my list. that said.
    with all sincerity. i belived that serliazing objects in byte[] allows for storing objects in objects, not object references in objects. here is my test code (just cut/paste):
    My idea seems similars to me as cryogenics and so that is the theme of my test code (and it is my favourite movie). note: this code is "proof of concept" and is exetremely hacked together.
    public class Test {
      private static HashMap<String, byte[]> barracks = new HashMap<String, byte[]>();
      public static void main(String[] args) {
        try {  new Test().go();  }   catch(Exception e) {  e.printStackTrace();  }
      public void go() throws Exception {
        Employee empl = new Employee("Dallas", "Captain");
        barracks.put(empl.name, cryogenicallyFreeze(empl));
        empl = new Employee("Kane", "Navigator");
        barracks.put(empl.name, cryogenicallyFreeze(empl));
        empl = new Employee("Ripley", "First Officer");
        barracks.put(empl.name, cryogenicallyFreeze(empl));
        empl = new Employee("Ash", "Science Officer");
        barracks.put(empl.name, cryogenicallyFreeze(empl));
        System.out.println("___log file___");System.out.println(".........");
        int id = (int) (System.currentTimeMillis() % barracks.size());
        System.out.println("[Nostromo]: emergency id #"+id+". Re-animation initiated...");
        switch (id) {
          case 0: empl = (Employee) reanimate("Dallas"); break;
          case 1: empl = (Employee) reanimate("Kane"); break;
          case 2: empl = (Employee) reanimate("Ash"); break;
          case 3: empl = (Employee) reanimate("Ripley");
        System.out.println("[Nostromo]: \"" + empl.name + "\" in command.");
        System.out.println("["+empl.name+"]: Hello. I was an object, not a reference, stored in a collection.");
        System.out.println();
        public static Employee reanimate(String name) throws Exception {
            PipedOutputStream pout = new PipedOutputStream();
            PipedInputStream pin = new PipedInputStream(pout);
            byte[] frozenEmpl = (byte[]) barracks.get(name);
            pout.write(frozenEmpl);
            ObjectInputStream ois = new ObjectInputStream(pin);
            return ((Employee) ois.readObject());
        public static byte[] cryogenicallyFreeze(Employee emp) throws Exception {
            PipedOutputStream pout = new PipedOutputStream();
            PipedInputStream pin = new PipedInputStream(pout);
            ObjectOutputStream oos = new ObjectOutputStream(pout);
            oos.writeObject(emp);
            byte[] frozenEmpl = new byte[pin.available()];
            pin.read(frozenEmpl);
            return frozenEmpl;
          public static class Employee implements Serializable {
            String name; String title;
            Employee(String n, String t) {  name = n; title = t;  }
    }"inside" of each byte[] object is an "Employee" object? I can't see it any other way. But I am not the sharpest pencil in the drawer...I'm on vacation from coding for a while. maybe i will get it when i start again. thanks.

    Why then, when i execute the same code in a procedure, the results is not the same?
    Here is the script to reproduce if you want to troubleshoot:
    rem connected as sys user
    create user steeve identified by steeve default tablespace users;
    ALTER USER STEEVE QUOTA UNLIMITED ON USERS;
    grant create session to steeve;
    grant create procedure to steeve;
    grant create table to steeve;
    rem connect as steeve user
    create table t1 as select object_name, owner, object_type from all_objects where 1=0;
    declare

    INSERT INTO t1 (object_name, owner, object_type)
    SELECT object_name, owner, object_type FROM all_objects;
    end;
    select count(1) from t1;
    select count(1) from all_objects;
    create table t2 as select object_name, owner, object_type from all_objects where 1=0;
    create procedure p is
    begin
    INSERT INTO t2 (object_name, owner, object_type)
    SELECT object_name, owner, object_type FROM all_objects;
    end p;
    execute p;
    select count(1) from t2;
    select count(1) from all_objects;
    i just want to add, that i dont have that problem when i run the same example connected with the user sys.
    Why this happen?
    what rights the user steeve is missing?
