Align a video only clip to an audio only clip

I recorded a wedding with my good camera and also with another OK camera.  The external mic on the good camera failed so the good video has no audio.
The other camera has audio and the video is OK (good enough to use for other angles, etc.)
I've seen articles on how to synchronize two clips automatically, but I think it requires both to have audio...that's how it synchronizes them.
I can break apart the audio and add it below the video only clip, but I can't figure out how to line it up so it doesn't look like a bad lip-sync foreign film.
I'm thinking I could align both clips with a marker on the photographer's flash...maybe that will work.
Can anyone suggest how to do this?
Thanks in advance
iMac (Mid 2009) 8GB RAM 8TB Storage (G-Drive), OSX 10.9.3, Final Cut Pro X 10.1.2

Find a well defined peak in the audio (hand clap, sharp noise, etc.) if you can. Select the detached audio, place the playhead over that peak and type M to set a marker. Find the corresponding point in the video — select that clip, place the playhead over the frame where that sound should start and type M to set another marker. Turn snapping in (or hold down the N key and slide the audio until the markers snap together.  If you missed, you can right click on one or the other marker and select Edit Marker, then nudge  left by typing Control - , (comma) or nudge it right by Control - . (period) then snap to the new position.  If you need to align an audio subframe to a discreet video frame, you can nudge audio by subframes left or right with Option -comma or -period. There are 80 audio subframes per video frame, so holding down the shift key as well will advance the audio by 10 frames at a time.
It just takes a little patience, but it's not all that difficult to do.

  • Video not playing in quicktime (audio only).  WHY?

    I'm running on Mac OS X 10.6.8 - Quicktime version 10.
Here's the info on the files that won't play:
Codecs: MPEG-2 Video, Linear PCM, Timecode
    Color profile: HD (1-1-1)
    Original Format: MPEG HD
I've downloaded the MPEG-2 codec for quicktime, as well as every XDCAM codec I could find.  The video still won't play in quicktime (it shows up in VLC only).
I need to import these clips into Final Cut Pro desperately.
    Any suggestions?

Is this easy/quick to do?  Did you do this in compressor?
The process is easy but repetitive. (Actually there are a number of different work flows that could be used here but all start with a platform that will play the original file.) In this case, I simply used QT 7 Pro for the conversion.
I WILL have to keep the 8 audio tracks for editing purposes.  Will this mess things up?
It could. Converting the eight spearate tracks to a single audio track with 8 channels does seem to subdue the audio levels whereas downconverting to 2-channels doesn't. You probably have two major options here. You can create a copy of each file (Command-D), convert the video track only, and then replace the original video track with the newly converted video track in the copied file. This keeps both audio and associated video together in a single file. However, since you plan to edit the files anyway, you could simply creater the duplicatle original file, export the video to a separate video only file, and then delete the video track in the copied file. This leaves you with an audio file and a separate video file which can be mixed back together in the video editor.
However, most of this is beside the point if the file can be opened, played, and/or imported directly to FCP on a single system. As previously indicated, I am running a system with the older version of FCP installed and have no problem importing XDCAM file directly to FCP once the editing project environment is switched to XDCAM editing. Basically, I am a bit afraid to update to the latest version of FCP until I've learned more about it.

  • Videos now single frame with audio only

My 30g video Ipod's videos now show up under music. When I try to watch them they are just a single frame and I get the audio. The videos are fine when viewed with Itunes. How do I get my videos back to normal videos???

correction: it works fine on my ipod when I have the "TV out" setting set to "off", but I'm only getting audio on my TV when I have the setting "TV out" set to "on." It has worked fine in the past.

  • Video no longer plays after adding 'effects', it's audio only

So I've used imovie 09 for months and everything has worked fine. Then today Iw as working on a video and added an effect to a clip and all **** broke loose. Now the video won't show up for every clip - it's audio only. I've tried closing imovie and restarting. I've even done a reinstall and EVERY other project and event works fine, it's just this particular video. I've created a whole new project, and even reimported all the video into a new event. But still when I add any effects to it, it'll play the title cards and the audio, but the video won't show up.
PLEASE HELP. Of course I have a deadline. Smh...

CUTTING SO YOU ONLY SEE THE TROUBLESHOOTING THINGS
If for some reason you can't view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:
    1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.
    2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.
    3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.
    4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.
    5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices
    6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed
If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section.

  • Quicktime X Exporting Audio only - No Video

    Hello,
Any MOV file I brought into Quicktime X I used to able to export to 720p, 1080p or 420p to
a nicely encoded, universal H.264 Quicktime file.
Now, when I try and export, it makes a small audio file and no video. The codec I'm encoding from is 'Animation'...should be easy..?
    Any ideas?
    thanks,
    Dan

I'm having the same problem. Exporting as a 720 or a 480 from a 1080 only makes audio files. It used to work great under Snow Leopard.
Even the Export for the Web/Broadband only ends up making audio-only .mov file
I rolled back to my old copy of QuickTime 7 pro and was able to export a 720 and a 480, though you have to wade through a lot more codec options...

  • ITunes took Utube-type movie files and duplicated the audio only and added it to Music in iTunes

I have about 8,000 short video clips in my iTunes library and about 9,000 songs.  When setting up iTunes Match, i noticed some ineligible files were titled as if they were video clips (ie 'Drunk guy slaps wife at church').  I checked for that same file name under Movies in iTunes, and there it was--in MPEG4 format...it played normally, video and sound.
I went back to the audio only file in Music of iTunes to find that it was an ACC audio file with an 'm4a' format.  The video fiile is 13MB, the audio only 3MB.
I've found about 20 files that have been duplicated this way.
QUESTION:  I have never extracted the audio only portion of these video files, and I don't go around encoding or changing formats of my videos.  How in the world did the audio of a video file show up in the Music section of my iTunes as a duplicate to an original file found in my Movies section of iTunes?!
If you have any ideas, I'd apprecate an explanation to this mystery...I'm starting to believe in supernatural powers.
    Thanks!

  • Audio Only

Many apologies if this has been answered before.
How do I tape JUST AUDIO into iMovie 09?
    Thank you for your help.
    - Michael D>

If you have a video, but just want the audio from it
    1. create a black background in iMovie
    2. drag the video over it, then click AUDIO ONLY.
2B. if you haven't yet recorded the audio, make your black background and press the voice over button. how to use that below:
    To record a voiceover:
Press the O key or click the Voiceover button. The Voiceover window opens.
In the Voiceover window, choose a microphone (or other sound input device) from the Record From pop-up menu.
If you have no externally attached microphone, choose “Internal microphone.”
Drag the input volume slider to set where you want the baseline volume of your recording.
If you’ll be speaking softly, drag the slider farther to the right to increase the recording volume.
Drag the noise reduction slider to the right to prevent background noises (white noise) from intruding on your recording.
If you want the ambient noise to be heard in the recording, drag the slider to the left.
If you want your voice to be electronically altered to sound more smooth, select the Voice Enhancement checkbox.
If you need to listen to audio cues in your video while you record your voiceover, select the checkbox labeled “Play project audio while recording,” and wear headphones while recording.
Because your video plays while you record a voiceover, your microphone picks up the playback sound of your video unless you mute it by deselecting the checkbox or by wearing headphones.
Click the video frame in your project where you want the voiceover to begin.
iMovie prompts you to get ready to speak, and then counts down from three to one.
When iMovie prompts you, begin speaking clearly into the microphone.
Click anywhere in the project to stop recording.
A purple voiceover soundtrack icon appears below the video where the voiceover will be heard.
Click the close (X) button in the Voiceover window to close the window before clicking again in your project.
Clicking in the project again without closing the Voiceover window initiates a new voiceover recording.
    Hope this helps.

  • How can i detach the video from a clip so i can only use the audio when using imovie?

how can i detach the video from a clip so i can only use the audio when using imovie?

First, go to iMovie/Preferences and enable the Advanced Tools.
Import the video clip into an iMovie Event. When you get ready to use it in an iMovie Project, select the clip in the Event and drag & drop it on top of a video or photo clip in the project at the place where you want it to begin. When the pop-up menu appears, choose Audio Only.

  • Re-enable video for audio only clips in sequence

    Hi all,
I've been an editor for quite sometime now, but I'm new to Premiere Pro CS5.
I have a dozen or so clips in my sequence that I used only the audio from a video/audio source file.
I now want to re-enable the video for these clips.
If I double click on them in the sequence it only opens up the audio element in the source window and I cannot re-enable the video to pull it down onto the sequence.
How can I bring the video back without having to go back to the original clip in the bin and re-marking the in and out points and overlaying it?
    Many thanks in advance

Make sure the track that contains the clip you want is targetted; that means clicking the Audio buttons in the track headers. Park the CTI at the beginning of the clip you want, and hit the "M" key; this will match frame the original clip and load it into the Source Monitor. From there, you can add/refine your in and out points, and then drag or insert the video into the sequence. Finally, you can relink the video and the audio; be sure to unlink the audio tracks first, then select the audio and video and relink. That will keep the video and audio as a single element.

  • Audio only on a video clip

    Hello gang,
Hope someone can answer this question.  I took a series of video clips over a week.  After I began putting them together, I somehow "lost" video.
They show up as a video clip in the menu screen, but when I go to play them it is only the audio portion that shows up.
Then after I let it play the clip "loses" the video pic associated with the clip and shows the "audio" note.  so I guess its now an
audio clip and I lost my video?  Any ideas from the smart crowd????  I am definately not in that group.  very novice!\
    Thanks,
    coach

I was able to bring up the video clips, edit them (using PE7) and save them as a project.  A couple days later, I went to view them and they showed up as audio only.
    Coach,
These two lines cause me to wonder a bit. I wonder if you are looking at, and trying to play the proper files. Let me give a bit of background, just so we're both on the same page. First a few questions: When you transfered the files from the SD card, what format did they appear as? Where did you copy them to? Would you download and install G-Spot. Run one of those files, the ones that you copied over from the SD card, and see what that program shows, expecially the upper right of the screen, where the CODEC used is shown. There will be both the "name" of the CODEC and the full specifications of it. That info might contain an answer for us. Next, look to the lower left of the G-Spot screen. You'll see two columns of little squares, with the number 1 in them. One is for Video, and one for Audio. Hit the #1 for Video, and you *should* get a box below, with #2 in it. Hit it, and you *should* get a box with a #3 in it. Again, hit #3, and you'll get a tiny viewer at the upper-left of the screen. Your Video *should* play. You may also need to render the Audio too.
Now, for the info: In PE, when you Save, you are only saving a Project file, with the .PREL extension. It is only a database, with no media in it, only links to media. There are also some Audio Conforming files, that appear in the PE Project folder structure, that will have the same filename, as your media files, but will have the .WAV extension. These are only Audio files. There will be some much smaller files there, with .PEK extensions. These are the Waveform Display.
PE is a non-destructive editor, in that it does not alter the original media files. They *should* be intact, as you copied them from the SD card. It would be easy to accidently play, say the conformed Audio files (remember, same filename, but with the .WAV extension*). You *should* be able to play your original (actually the copies that you made from the SD card) with no problem. If they play only Audio, and you have opened the right files, then you likely do not have the proper CODEC on your machine. That's what paragraph two is all about. and we'll have that answer.
Let us know what G-Spot says, and good luck,
    Hunt
    * If you have your OS's Folder Options to not show file extensions, please change that setting. You definitely want to see the file extensions, especially as many of your files will have the same filename, with NLE work.

  • Does version 12 support producing video clip with AMR audio codec?

From some documents i used as reference to proceude some videos for my phone Premiere Elements 8 can produce video clips with AMR audio codec. I bought today the Premiere elements 12 but I can not find a way to set AMR audio codec for my video clip. Only AAC audio codec seems available.   Is it possible to add AMR codec to 12 version?

    Neurona17
Adobe typically supports only current version, and, if you purchased from it, is strict on "within 30 days of purchase": for money back on that current version purchase. I do not believe such a thing as a "change the license for other earlier release such as 8 or 9" exists at Adobe. But, you could ask. If you wish to purchase one of those earlier versions that supports AMR export, you might still find some online.
Is the before import conversion of AMR to WAV a viable alternative?
    You wrote
Unfortunately so far I have not been able to generate any useful video clip for my system with this 12 version.
Is this in regard to the AMR requirement or to any video without the AMR audio?
Online I have seen that there is a download for the AMR audio codec. Does your system now show that you have such a codec installed on your computer. If not, I am not sure if download of this codec would place it in the Premiere Elements Publish+Share export settings choices, similar to import of some .avi video codecs. (Sometimes 3rd party codecs can create problem, so proceed with caution if you pursue that AMR audio codec idea.
Please update us on your progress when you get a chance.
    Thanks.

  • No video (black), audio only, from imported .mov files

Bear with me while I explain the whole process to get where I am, which is that in FCE, I am importing .mov files and they are completely black, no video, just audio.  When I bring a clip into the timeline and try to render even a small clip, it is still black.
I'm not well-versed in video so please bear with me:
    Steps:
    1.  I received large video files from a videographer
    2.  the large files could not be imported or played in FCE
    3.  downloaded HandBrake converter and began converting files.  Kept them at the same size, but they were then renamed .mov files.
    4.  When I open them in QuickTime, they are black - no video.  But when I see them on the drive and press spacebar in 'finder' to play them, I can see the video.
    5.  When I import them into FCE they are black - no video - just audio.
FCE is currently set (in Easy Setup) to:  AVCHD-Apple Intermediate Codec 1920-1080i60
Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I tried converting one file to mp4 and it works fine in FCE, but this takes a long, long time to convert.
    thanks
There is a 2nd issue that may relate to this:  I am trying to import JVC .m4v files and I am getting "File error 1 file(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unkown".  These files CAN be opened in Quicktime.
    FCE HD 4.0.1
    Mac OS 10.6.8

I'm having similar, but slightlly different issues.
I have been using FCE 4 on Mac OSX 10.7.5 with Quicktime 10.1 (501.29).
I convert my footage in Mpeg Streamclip (GREAT free program) and set the files to the Apple Intermediate Codec.  This makes them work really well in my timeline and I don't have rendering issues or problems.
So, my problem comes when I File/Export/Quictime Movie.
The original file plays fine, but they're 2-3 gbs each, so I put them into Quicktime to convert them to a webfriendly size, but every single time they come out as an audio only file.  GRRRR!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Maybe I'm missing something stupid.
Thanks so much for your help.
    Sincerely,
    Steve
