Alignment guides and rulers

I would like to create my own master pages for books in Aperture; however, I don't see any of the common tools that one would expect to have when doing layout - being able to distribute objects evenly, horizontally and/or vertically, being able to view a ruler to help position objects, etc.
Am I completely missing this feature, or does Aperture not provide such facilities?
Thanks
(I'm using Aperture 1.5 with OS X 10.4.8)
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Thanks for your response.
I found those guides to be helpful; however, they are not very useful for distributing the layout e.g. I want 3 pictures, evenly spaced across a page. There's really no way that I see to do that - I can't specify that the first image should be e.g. 1.33" inches from the left margin with .5" inches between images nor can I distribute the images automatically.
I am also not averse to editing XML files if that is the current workaround to GUI support...

  • Rulers and Guides and Grids

Can anyone explain why or how to get guides and rulers and grids In Premier pro 5+ ? For me it would be a very usefull set of tools to have or is there any plugins to acheive this with ?
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I also create custom Guides in Photoshop, and Import those PSD's for about the same use, as Ann's tip.
I will create those, especially for involved PiP situations, so that I can Scale & Position, to my "windows." This ARTICLE goes into a bit more detail.
    Good luck,

  • Really? No guides and no alignment feature?

Am I missing something obvious or does this thing really not have alignment or guides?
    Thanks

Guides as in you drag out a line from the top or side and it stays put and you can then move objects to that line. This is a basic feature that's missing. Typically, you show Rulers and then click and drag them out.
The Smart Guides are the ones that are in Apple's Motion (and many other apps now) where it automatically pops up a guide as you move objects around. FCP X has the screen centered smart guide, but that's it. Apple needs to implement Motion's method, because it's great.
I think those are two glaring omissions. It's weird that they put in the centering smart guide and then stopped.
If they add the Motion Smart Guides and fix the memory issue, and allow me to Optical Flow a reversed clip, I'd be a very happy camper.

  • Alignment guides doesn't work properly in Pages and Tables

Drag out a horizontal and vertical guide and align the center of a square to them. When you zoom in to 400%, you can see, that the object doesn't align properly. The guides should divide the square in to 4 equal sized small squares. But they don't!!!

Not sure if this is the same issue as listed above, but I've had continuing issues with dragging currently playing songs into playlists. It shifts the Spotify window to the lower part of my screen. Always. In order for this NOT to happen, I have to click on the song title (currently playing) - and then click and drag it to my playlist. It's almost like Spotify thinks I want to drag and drop the song to my desktop. It's really really really annoying. Another issue I've been having is when I drag the song, the whole Spotify window freezes momentarily (sometimes longer). What's going on? There are regular updates yet neither of these issues have been addressed. Platform: Mac OSX / Yosemite / Macbook Retina Pro Current Spotify version: 1.0.11.134.ga37df67b Please let me know if anyone else shares this problem and/or knows a solution. If you need additional user info, please advise.

  • Alignment Guides In Pages 5

What happened to Alignment Guides? #APPLE are you being serious?!
The new Pages 5 is a joke.

Ah, gotcha. Alignment guides that show up when you are on, near or around an object.
But what about dragging out guides from the Rulers both vertical and horizontal?
Is that possible? I think you used to be able to hit 'W' and they would show. Thanks for your help!

  • Anyone know how to remove a stubborn alignment guide

I'm working in a Page Layout document. There is an alignment guide on the 2nd page. I cannot get rid of it! I cannot move it. I can't "select" it. I can delete the page and insert another page, from the Insert Menu, but it shows up again. It must have been there when I captured the page.
Is there a keyboard trick or menu item somewhere?
I can create a new guide, move it around, and move it off the page. But, this one guide stays and it gets in my way.
    Any ideas or suggestions??
    Thanks a bunch!

That's kind of what I ended up doing.
I didn't want to create a totally fresh page, because there were things on the first page I wanted to be on each page and didn't want to recreate them over and over.
What I did was open a brand new PL document and then I selected all the things on the first page that I wanted and pasted it into the new document. Then I chose to Manage the Pages.
The alignment guide was then gone. I don't know why I couldn't select this one! It hasn't repeated.
    thanks

  • Where are the alignment guides in Pages 5?

In the old version of Pages I could drag down or across from the ruler and would have an alignment guide. Where is that in Pages 5?

It looks like Apple took every feature that could not be supported in Safari out of Pages for mac.
    I recommend switching to http://www.adobe.com/products/incopy.html
It turns out "free" means "worthless" to Apple.

  • Method to lock alignment guides (pages 5.5)

Is there a method to lock "alignment guides" in Pages?     I seem to be constantly grabbing them accidentally.  Probably just moving too fast.  But was hoping there would be a method to lock them in position once they are set-up.
    Thank-you,  John L.

You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac and are alternately opening the wrong one.
Pages 5 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
Pages '09 can not open Pages 5, iOS 7 Pages, Pages for iCloud beta or iCloud files.
Pages 5 only runs on Mavericks and can not open Pages '08 or earlier files at all and alters/damages Pages '09 files, which once saved can not be opened by anything other than Pages 5.
Pages 5 files are in an odd compressed bundle, impossible to parse, which won't transfer via non-Apple servers. DropBox may have patched theirs, I haven't checked lately.
All Pages files, no matter what version or compatibility, have the same file extension: .pages.
Apple has removed over 110 features from Pages and many of the rest are buggy. They have confused their users and apparently themselves with the installations, upgrades and cross-transfers of files. Effectively Pages 5 files are only compatible with themselves in a very narrow range of hardware and software.
    http://www.freeforum101.com/iworktipsntrick/viewforum.php?f=22&mforum=iworktipsn trick
We are recommending users "upgrade" back to Pages '09 and trash/archive Pages 5 after Exporting their Pages 5 files back to Pages '09 or Word .docx files.
You should give Apple and other users feedback by rating/reviewing Pages 5 in the App Store.

  • Alignment guides

I have smart guides turned on in CS5 and am moving an object around another object and see the alignment guides that come out horizontally, though I am not sure what they indicate? I get a horizontal line when one shape is next to another, is this simply indicating the point that I am dragging it where the two shapes are lines up on the same y access? What about shapes of different sizes, do these come out when lining up objects are lined up at their center points in the shapes?
    Thanks.

    Stan,
At least in 10 it works this way:
When you click somewhere and drag, you will get indications based upon the cursor position, relative to:
    1) The original spot you click, with lines in the directions chosen in the Edit>Preferences>Smart Guides & Slices (normally every 45 degrees, including horizontal and vertical);
    2) Whatever your cursor go over, including paths and centres.
So to align one shape with another, you may choose the most suitable spot on the former and drag until you get a hit for the other and take it from there. Just a few instances:
If you wish to abut the sides with bottom alignment, you may Click the relevant corner of the former and ClickDrag it until it says Corner for the latter.
If you wish to just align the bottoms at an arbitrary distance, you may Click somewhere along the bottom of the former and Drag it until it says Path (or Intersect) for the latter, let go, and ClickDrag sideways as you wish as long as it says On.

  • Aligning Guides Glitch With "Use Preview Bounds" Checked

I recently noticed in the Preferences that there is a check box option for "Use Preview Bounds" in Illustrator.
When checked, effects such as strokes and all will be clickable and transform sizes will be based on the "preview" bounds of an object.
However convenient, the option poses a problem for people who like to align guides to their artboards or even distribute them.
If you try and align guides to your artboards using the "Align" panel, weird things occur and it does not do so.
If you try and distribute multiple guides using the "Align" panel, the guides don't do anything.
This is something that should be addressed and fixed in future versions of Adobe Illustrator.

In case you're going to do an official bug report, you might want to mention that this bug has been there for at least one decade …

  • How to center object between two guides (or one guide and edge of artboard)

Simple question: how can I center an object between two guides or between a guide and the edge of the artboard?

    Chris,
You may (Smart Guides are your friends):
    1) Create a rectangle between the two Guides or between the Guide and the Artboard edge, by ClickDragging with the Rectangle Tool from (the desired spot) on one to (the desired spot) on the other (Smart Guides say path/path or path/page when you are there);
    2) Select both the rectangle from 1) and the object, then Click the rectangle again, then use the relevant options in the Align palette.
That should move your object to the centre in the direction(s) you choose.

  • Dragging guides from rulers in CS6 InDesign

I am unable to get "dragging guides from rulers" when using CS6 InDesign. Is anybody else having this problem?

I tried restoring my InDesign preferences, but it still doesn't work. I used both the Ctrl+Atl+Shift method and the manual method (by replacing the files), but the draggable guides are still not showing. I have made sure to turn guides on in the settings as well. I've looked everywhere online and the only conclusion I can come up with is that it's a bug. By the way I'm using Windows 8. The strange thing is that my Adobe Illustrator, and Photoshop are working fine (including guides), however InDesign has been causing problems, so there has to be something wrong with the program. But I don't know what it is

  • Alignment Guides NOT working

I was able to create alignment guides two weeks ago. Now, using the same step-by-step instructions provided by Apple, the alignment guides will not appear. It's very strange.
Anyone have experience with this glitch in the past?
Again, I followed the exact step-by-step instructions Apple tells us to follow to get them, properly. And, those same steps were successful two weeks ago. Was there an unadvertised update that pushed through without notification or something?

    wp,
Since there is no need for guides unless you have some content that can make use of the guides, the won't be available. As Peter suggests, you'll need to add an object. If you have an object in your document and still can't add guides, it may be that your object isn't selected. You need to have at least one object selected in order to create a guide. Of course if you have just inserted an object, it will already be selected.

  • Turn off alignment guides in 1 dimension?

I use the alignment guides to neatly and quickly align objects with each other on the slide, but oftentimes when lots of objects accumulate closely on the slide, it seems like every new object wants to align with everything else and it can be a big mess. Using the keyboard shortcut Command-drag temporarily turns off the alignment guides, but then it hard to precisely align objects.
My question: Is there a way to only turn off 1 dimension of the alignment guides in order to, for instance, line up a set of objects on the x-axis without triggering the y-axis alignment guides? I'm using Keynote '09 5.0.3.
    Thanks!

is there a way of switching it off so when i double click on a region it opens the full piano roll editor window instead of the all in 1 veiw
I agree, this should be an option.
