All 9 Apple AE Base Stations Dying and need restart

Hiyall,
I do tech work for a school and we have a problem with all 9 of our Airport Extreme base stations disappearing off the network. Its like they don't exist. The cannot be seen wirelessly or via ethernet using the Airport admin utility. They won't even respond to a ping. Its driving everyone nuts. I only work there a couple of hours a fortnight so I don't yet know if all the base stations die at once or one by one but when I was there last week they were all dead. If you restart them they seem to work fine for some random amount of time before requiring a restart. This goes on all day.
The network was running fine and then recently we purchased 10 new ibooks and took the opportunity to upgrade all computers to 10.4.7. We immediately started having problems. We have about 30 iBooks and a few windows laptops. The problems occur even when only a few laptops are logged in. The base station firmware is currently 5.7 but we had the problem with 5.6.
I cannot think of anything that could kill off all our base stations and I'm all out of ideas. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers.

After further investigation it would appear that the base station dies that is being used rather than just random drop offs. I guess after each unit dies the laptops are restarted and start using another base station and kill it and so on until they are all dead.
Interesting when I did a test with a class yesterday that everything worked fine for the 30 mins we logged in. It wasn't until we logged out and shut down the laptops that the base station dropped off the network and required a restart. Can't see the logic in this.

  • Why have all 3 airport express base stations stopped working, BT have checked and improved line still not working?

Why have all 3 airport express base stations stopped working, other users are on ipads and BT have checked and improved line but I still have an intermittent/no connection?

You must tell us the whole setup.. what is the main router?? How are the express connected to each other?
On ipad it works ok?? But you are on a computer?? MBP early 2011 running Lion?? That doesn't work.. even if you are right next to the main router??
Plugged in by ethernet does it work??
Have you installed a wireless diagnostic program.. ?? Actually Lion has one installed but hidden I believe.
Later version bought it to the surface.
    About Wireless Diagnostics
If you do run Lion please install the 5.6 airport utility as it will give you loads more info on how the units are connected.. and link speeds for extend wireless.
How to load 5.6 into later Lion & ML
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
Leave the package open on the desktop so you can see the file. AirportUtility56.pkg
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. If your Mac refuses to run the software, because it wasn’t downloaded from the Apple store, go to security in preferences and allow other software to work.. this is limitation of trade methinks. You can set back later if you like.
Now drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. in finder, open the new directory, drill down.. applications, utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall version 6 (now 6.3 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. although I have had no problems when doing so.

  • HT4145 I have an Airport Extreme bas station now and I want to know if I can use an Airport Express to extend my network or do I have to use another Airport Extreme base.

I have an Airport Extreme Base Station now and I would like to know if I can use an Airport Express to extend my wifi network or do I have to use another Airport Extreme Base Station.

    This AirPort Express:
    http://www.apple.com/airportexpress/
It is the only Express with 2 Ethernet ports. All others are "old"
Apple does not specify a model number in their product information, but it is A1392 in the U.S. I do not know if Apple uses different model numbers in other countries.

  • Are there any faster wireless routers compared to the Apple Extreme Base Station?

Are there any faster wireless routers compared to the Apple Extreme Base Station?

The speed of wireless is limited by the technology. If you are using 802.11n wireless at 5 GHz, and assuming you have a strong connection, the speed will approach the 270-300 Mbps range. Other routers will achieve similar results if they have 5 GHz capability.
As far an ethernet connection is concerned, the Gigabit ethernet ports on the AirPort Exteme will provide top performance, along with other routers that have Gigabit etherent ports.

  • Apple Extreme Base station Channels

Monitoring using iStumbler, I have a very low signal coming through my Apple Base Station (60%), and I am being told that the Channel its set and can be changed, is that possible.

_*wireless interference*_ comes in many disguises.
since you have iStumbler installed on your machine, note the channels other networks in your vicinity are broadcasting on. change the channel(s) of your network as far away as possible from those. again, it may be trial and error until you find a channel that provides satisfactory results.
alternatively, hardwire your computer to the extreme, thus avoiding interference altogether.
if running ethernet cables is no option (or not appealing), consider *powerline adapters* _*such as these*_.

  • Do I need an 'apple airport base station' to use the internet on my macbook?

I'm considering getting a refurbished Macbook Air next week, which will be my first Mac computer ever, and I was watching some of the introduction videos.
    http://www.apple.com/findouthow/mac/#wirelessbasics
'Wireless Basics' - At about 0:55 seconds in, it says something about needing what sounds like an 'apple airport base station' to connect my Macbook to the internet here in my home. I currently have an HP laptop that easily connects to our Wi-Fi. I actually need some additional 'apple airport base station' thing to connect to the internet? I can't just connect like our Wi-Fi PC laptops do? Tell me I'm hearing this wrong, because I can't afford some additional 'base station' on top of an expensive Macbook, refurbished or not.

Any WiFI basestation should work but there are two caveats. First, configuring non-Apple basestations is more confusing for newbs than the AirPort is. Second, upgrading firmware can be a real pain for some 3rd party bases - they don't tend to let users know the updates exist and many require a PC to install.

    Thank's for your help,

Use AirPort Utility 5.6 which contains the features you need. It is compatible with Lion as well as Mountain Lion, however, the installer app will refuse to install it on Mountain Lion.
This dilemma is easily solved though. You simply need to extract the app from the installer package using a package extractor like Pacifist.
    Download Pacifist here: http://www.charlessoft.com/
Download AirPort Utility 5.6 here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
If you happen to have an archived copy of the AU 5.6 app somewhere, such as a Time Machine backup or equivalent, you can simply restore it or drag the app to your Mountain Lion system's Utilities folder. It will run without complaint. It is only the package installer that is the problem.
Mountain Lion will not allow you to delete its existing version of AirPort Utility. Just ignore it. It and the older version (which will bear the unique name "AirPort Utility 5.6") can peacefully coexist.
Note: For those with Leopard or Snow Leopard systems you need AirPort Utility 5.6.1 (this is confusing - a later AirPort Utility version for an earlier OS X version - but it is correct).
Download AirPort Utility 5.6.1 here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1536

Items that can cause interference with airport are:
    Microwave ovens
    DSS
Cordless telephones that operate in the 2.4 GHZ range
Adjacent base stations using nearby channels.
Any new electronic equipment been added recently? Could be a neighbor's equipment as well.
Lastly, do you have the most recent AE firmware installed?

  • 2 airport extreme base stations later and still no internet connection-

Sorry - yet another beginner with internet connection troubles! (I have read all the posts I could find relating, but without any help).
I have had a Demon broadband account now for about a month (I’m in the UK) and in that time I have purchased a D-Link DSL-300T Ethernet modem and an Airport Extreme Base Station. I got wireless internet working relatively easily – with a powerful range over the whole house and garden, but then one Sunday night, the internet connection via the base station suddenly ‘died’.
I spent the following 3 days scrutinising all of my settings of both the Modem and the Base station, re-setting both, and bought new Ethernet cables / micro filters etc but with no luck. (I’ll point out at this stage that my broadband account is still active, and if I connect the Ethernet modem directly to my iBook [wired] I can still get my broadband connection. Alternatively, I tried daisy chaining the modem to the base station and then via an Ethernet cable to an iBook, but no connection could be made).
When wireless, Airport Admin recognises there is a modem there, and under preferences > network under Airport it states I am connected to the internet – but I’m not.
I then phoned D-Link and they confirmed my firmware was up-to-date for use with Apple products and talked me through all of the modem settings and tweaked a few things, but there was still no connection to the base station. I then phoned Apple. They were incredibly helpful (as ever) and after 35 min. came to the conclusion the base station might not be re-setting itself properly. The replacement one came yesterday, and again I spent a number of hours trying to get it connected to the internet, but there is still no internet connection via airport and I can confirm this from both my eMac and iBook.
Reading through the forums on here, I understand that my particular modem is problematic with the base station, but I can’t work out why it use to work and now it doesn’t! One theory I have investigated is that the firmware of the base station is two advance for the modem following an update, but after reinstalling the original firmware I started with, I still have no luck.
    - The eMac is running 10.3.9 / iBook is running 10.4.3. The base station is reinstalled with the latest firmware via system update. The first base station and the modem were delivered to me 31/10/05.
Any help or suggestions would be really appreciated if anyone has any ideas
    Thanks for your time

I think if you follow the instructions I gave in this
    link you will be fine.
Remember, If you for any reason loose your
connection, it is normally always a Power Issue..Your
ISP is down for service ..or some other anomoly, If
you were good before your settings will still be
    good...Good Luck...Don
    Hi Don,
Thanks for you quick response. I printed off the instructions you posted on the support forum before, and ran through your procedue exactly, (twice) but I'm sorry to inform you that I haven't been able to re-establish my wireless internet connection. Would it be safe for me to assume at this stage that my modem is indeed fualty? It contines to work fine independantly, (I'm using it right now) but it can't seem to make contact with the basestation.
    Will.

  • Has anyone else's Airport base station died?

My base station just went down...They are currently on back order everywhere...For some reason I cant get my airport express to connect at home, I have full bars, but it wont connect to the internet....any advice?
(Ive used the express many times before while traveling, with no problems at all)
    thanks in advance.

You didn't stipulate DSL or Cable, but try the following:
AirPort Express Base Station Setup (AX) w/High-Speed Cable Modem
    Modem/Router Power ReCycling
    - Power-off the Cable modem, AX, & computer(s). (If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
    - Power-on the Cable modem; Wait at least 30 minutes.
    - Power-on the AX; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    - Power-on the computer(s)
Perform a "hard" reset of the AX
    - (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108044)
    Setup the AX
With the network components powered down, set up the AX, using the AirPort Admin Utility, connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, try these settings:
    AirPort tab
    - Base Station Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
    - AirPort Network Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
    - Create a closed network (unchecked)
    - Wireless Security: Not enabled
    - Channel: Automatic
    - Mode: 802.11b/g Compatible
    Internet tab
    - Connect Using: Ethernet
    - Configure: Using DHCP
    - WAN Ethernet Port: Automatic
    Network tab
    - Distribute IP addresses (checked)
    - Share a single IP address (using DHCP & NAT) (enabled)

  • Airport Extreme Base Station N and Buffalo Linkstation

I want to set up a Buffalo Linkstation with my Airport Extreme Base Station
I have two options on the linkstation
    1. ethernet
    2. USB (female port)
Can I use the NAS over ethernet? Or do I have to use USB? If I use USB will it work if both the linkstation and the base station have female ports.
Will a USB with both male ends work? Who makes that?

I've decided to use the drive as a network drive and I've gone into the control panel and changed all the folders to Mac/PC
Can I use Backup to backup to a network drive? Or is there a better program?

  • Airport Base station (g) and Express (g) - Which is better?

I have both from an older wireless system in the house. Both were replaced by a new Time Capsule, which is an (n) system, of course. I currently use the older base station for my printer so all computers can use it wirelessly. The Express is at the other end of the house supplying wireless to my entertainment center.
The Q: would it be better to move the base station to the entertainment center, or would it even make a difference. It seems it wouldn't matter, but I thought I would ask anyway.

The Q: would it be better to move the base station to the entertainment center, or would it even make a difference. It seems it wouldn't matter, but I thought I would ask anyway.
Let's review the absolute best way to connect and then work back from there so you can make a decision based on your requirements.
The "best" connection in terms of performance (speed and network bandwidth) is always a wired ethernet connection. Newer routers and computers will allow Gigabit speeds between devices up to 300+ feet away. In terms of numbers, that's 1000 Mbps.
The very best 802.11n 5 GHz wireless systems will allow up to 300 Mbps bandwidth. Most "n" wireless systems are operating at 2.4 GHz, which will allow up to 130 Mbps. I think you may already be seeing where this is going.
Now, the bandwidth (speed capability) on any wireless system falls off in proportion to the distance from the main router to the device receiving the signal. It's not exactly accurate, but safe to say that a device at 50 feet from the main router is only going to get about half of the signal that a device at 25 feet will get.
So, with wireless, the rules are always the same. The closer a device is to the broadcast source, the better the performance. Any obstructions like walls or ceiling that absorb the signal come into play as well.
I think you have your answer.

  • Recovering Old Datas on New Drive + Setting Airport Extreme Base Station old and new ones

    Hello All,
    Situation:
    -iMac 24" Alu/2008/2.8 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo/ 2Go DDR2 SDRAM
-2 Airport Extreme Base Stations mushroom type,
-1 Airport Extreme Capsule Model: A1143
The original 320 Go Hard Drive of my iMac crashed few months ago. A "technician" installed a new Hard Drive 235 Go while trying to recover all datas from old one. Failed.
No back up. The old disc needs to be unlocked in a dustless atmosphere. Quite expensive at the moment.
I decided to install OS X from sratch with the original Install Disc delivered with my iMac.
    OS X is 10.5
Once on line I updated all pre-installed softwares. Among which Aiport Utility 5.6.1 today.
    Problem:
I would like to get bigger hard drive disc, 1To for example. Does this still exist for this iMac 2008 Alu ?
How can I do to get my iMac again to OS X 10.9 ?. Does this mean I need to buy all intermediate levels again ?
How do I get my softwares (the ones on the original Disc: Pack office, Pages, Numbers, etc ...) back on track again, since my iMac is now more like down to factory level ?
Extending my internet provider from the WiFi router via my 3 Airport Extreme Base Stations: 2 mushroom type that need OS X + Airport Utility softwares at a certain level, while the Capsule might need another level. Right now I tried to set up the 3 of them with this Aiport Utility and though they all recognize the provider network, I can never conclude to extend it with the Base Stations: it drops the case. (WDS trouble which I don't even know what it is, or the Base Station simply desapears from Airport Utility scan, ...)
Thank you all for you attention.
Your comments are welcome especially if you have any knowledge on these various subject.
Can't wait to read your piece of advice.
    Lionnel From Paris (France).

me too... i connected my hard drive with all my music but i cannot see any of the music that used to be in my itunes... i checked and its there (when I connect the HD directly to my computer) but not when is plugged into the Airport Extreme... Please help!

  • What is Error 2813 while trying to install  my Airport Extreme Base Station? and How can I fix it? Thanks

What is Error 2813 while trying to install  my Airport Extreme Base Station(A1143/MA073LL/A)? and How can I fix it? Thanks

Did you remember to completely power cycle the entire network?
You would want to do this after any update or change to the network.
If you did not do this yet......things are out of sequence.
Power off everything on the network.....all devices.....power down order is not important
    Wait a few minutes
Start the modem first and let it run a minute or two by itself
Start the next device connected to the modem the same way
Work your way out on the network starting each device about a minute apart
    Check the network
