All applications not responding

I see this happen once every few weeks. I'll quit an app, the window will close, but the app won't finish shutting down. It stays open in the dock, and right clicking and force quit show not responding. Force quit won't work. I can't shut the app down. Starting any other app when this happens causes that app to behave in exactly the same way: the icon opens in the dock, but the app is non-responsive and can't be forced to quit. Can't access terminal when this happens, because it locks up just like all the apps. While I haven't tried to open every app, I think any app I try to open when this is happening will lock up. If I relaunch Finder, it too locks up and then the only thing left is to hold down the power button for a hard reboot.
Any app that is running while this is happening will continue to run normally unless I try to shut it down.
Repairing disk permissions has no effect.
Any thoughts.

I too am seeing this issue on both my iMac and my MbP; very frustrating.
Cannot type anywhere, windows will not come to the front except through expose, Dock is unresponsive, menu bar disappears (I believe this is Finder crashing, but Finder still appears active in the Dock).
This seems to be a new thing with the latest updates.

  • Mavericks freezing / Applications not responding

Before I start this problem is not isolated to one machine. We have around several MacBook Pros from 2012 onwards,  Retina MacBook Pros and iMacs.
The Retina laptops came with Mavericks installed.
    So our general issues are:
    - Fan noise loud
    - Machine with no acitvity starts wurring up
    - All applications not responding then having to hard restart
    - Laptop running hot
This has only happened since release of Mavericks and is not SSD related as we have had non SSD related Macs with the problem.
Almost every machine I've listed above has experienced the issues above.
Does anyone know a fix for this or is Mavericks just not worth using?

    HA IT --
Are you all running some kind of Security or AV program on your Macs?  Something that would be oconstantly scanning files?

  • Help please-"Application Not Responding" for Safari and Mail

I read in one discussion that if Safari is slow, you can go to Font Book and select the fonts with a bullet to get rid of duplicate fonts. I did that, and then decided to disable some japanese fonts I don't use.
Now Safari and Mail don't work. Mail won't open at all, and Safari launches but doesn't load and I get the spinning wheel.
I used Disk Utility to fix permissions, and that didn't solve the problem, and now my Disk Utility also says "Application Not Responding".
I also went back to Font Book and enabled all the fonts I disabled. Still nothing.
    ( I can use Netscape-so it's only Mac applications I guess)
Any help is very much appreciated.

Wow- i fixed it! I remembered that when I was in Font Book originally, there were some fonts disabled, and I enabled them.
I couldn't remember EXACTLY which ones, but I disabled some I thought were the ones, and VOILA!
Mail works, Safari works...what a relief!
And it only took me HOURS...oh well.

  • Microsoft Word Freezing Repeatedly, Application Not Responding

Just wondering if anyone else was having issues with Microsoft Word from MS Office 2008, where you open the application, you type a few sentences, and the application freezes with the spinning circle of death that won't go away until you click the dock where it says "application not responding" and do a force-quit? You can leave the circle spinning for 10-20-30 minutes, and it never goes away.
Now for the weird part--this error only happens for me when I'm using a specific document on my computer. I can open Word, start a new document, type several paragraphs of text, and it works fine. But I've been working on an existing paper for about two months that all of a sudden started causing these freezes/crashes when editing it. It's about 30 pages roughly, no images, no big inserts that would take up a lot of memory (116 kb in size). And up until today, there were no problems. So why all of a sudden can't I edit anything on this paper without freezing the program?! I downloaded the Microsoft Office 2008 Service Pack 1 that was just released after this problem started, and ran all the recent Java and program updates through Software Update with computer restarts. I even copied the text from the Word document I was working on, pasted it into a new document, tried saving it as both .doc and .docx, and again the program still freezes when working with that text in a new file. This one baffles me. It's like the text within a document is somehow freezing the application. One thing I did notice is that the freezes seem to happen when I'm scrolling using a mouse wheel. Not always, but quite a bit. I suppose this is some memory issue related to several pages of text that the program can't render or process when you add new lines of text or scroll, but again, I can't figure why this paper I've been working on for months all of a sudden decided to start freezing Word today. Can you really only have 30 double-spaced pages of text in Word before it crashes?
Looks like I've found my reason to switch to Open Office, since I'm 3-4 days out from a deadline. Any other solution strategies would be welcome. Thanks.

Same problem here - Microsoft Word 2008 (update 12.1.7) will open fine, and then start the spinning pizza of death. Only way out is to force-quit the app. I've tried:
    1) deleting plist and font cache files
    2) uninstalling MS Office 2008, reinstalling and then re-applying updates 12.1.0 and 12.1.7
    3) confirming that Apple's Font Card.app can verify all fonts
No luck. Currently I can't open any MS word doc without the spinning pizza of death.
If you are lucky enough that these symptoms only happen with a specific Word .doc file, I would see if the PC-originator could re-save the file as .RTF and resend. If you can then open it OK, you could revert back to .doc (or .docx) format. RTF format is Microsoft's interchange format. If there are anomalies in the .doc file, saving as .RTF can sometimes clean them up. Once done, you can revert back to native MS Word format.

  • Mouse over dock icon no longer indicates "application not responding"

A very convenient feature seems to be missing from Snow Leopard. In prior versions, if an application was not responding, holding the cursor over its dock icon would display "[Application] Not Responding" and also an option to Force Quit. This status message does not appear in Snow Leopard.
Are we to assume that if we click and hold on a dock icon and "Force Quit" is presented as an option, that the application has stopped responding?
    Suggestions?

    Thanks!
So if I click and hold a dock icon and "Force Quit" is shown instead of "Quit" would that indicate that the particular application is in the midst of some process and simply unable to respond?
Should I simply allow more time for the app to finish whatever it's doing?
it could be either. sometimes an application is busy and is showing as not responding but will come out of it after a while. but sometimes it's truly hanging and then you have to force quit it to get rid of it. there is no way to tell just by looking at the dock. give it a bit of time and if it's still not responding then force quit. but if it's happening all the time then you may have problems with your system.
In particular, here, I've launched DiskWarrior 4.2 on a Mini (via Screen Sharing from my Mac Pro) in an attempt to rebuild directory on a My Book 1TB external drive connected by FireWire, which Disk Utility indicates needs repair but DU cannot repair. Ideas?
so what does disk warrior say when you try to rebuild the directory? and you should also verify the internal drive on the mini too.

  • ITunes 11.2.1 freezes when I connect my iPhone 5. 'Application not responding'

    Hi,
Recently I upgraded Mavericks. Since then I cant sync my phone anymore. iTunes works fine untill I plugin my phone. Then the spinwheel comes up and stays there forever. In dock it says 'Application Not Responding'.
    iPhone 5, iTunes 11.2.1, Macbook Pro 10.9.3 2.6 GHz 8Gb
Does somebody can help me out? That would be very very nice!

    Hi BlackNikes
I had exact same problem, but have now resolved it. If your problem is the same as mine your SyncServices folders have been corrupted while itunes was updated.
See my post or spyder683 post at https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6223064?start=60&tstart=0
I am running Mavericks 10.9.3 and updated itunes to 11.2.0 and then experienced problems with itunes crashing, 11.2.2 didn't resolve the problem. I found iTunes worked fine if all my other devices (iphone, ipad, ipod) were turned off, as soon as I powered any one of them up and itunes detected them over wifi or USB itunes then froze with the dreaded colored ball spinning.
In Mavericks 10.9.3 the SyncServices folder is not visible going into the normal library/Application support folder, your instructions below took me to a different area in the system, or at least made these folders visible. Following your instructions I was able to locate and delete both SyncService & SyncServices folders and I launched iTunes again while my devices were powered up and the issue has gone. Bliss!!!
    Many Thanks
    spyder683 wrote:
    Hi Culero,
The fix of deleting the SyncServices folder is for Mac systems. From your desktop / finder, click the "Go" menu at the top, then "Go to Folder ..." Paste this into the field: ~/Library/Application Support
The SyncServices folder should be in there. I had both a SyncService and a SyncServices folder. The second one should, when deleted, help with the problem you and I both had of iTunes freezing when an iOS device is plugged in.
    Hope this helps

  • Drag and Drop - Application not responding

    Hello,
I have a problem regarding Drag and Drop in Mavericks (but probably all versions):
This is especially concerning Drag and Drop from Mail or Microsoft Outlook to another application (in this case a Java Application).
I know that it's only possible to drag mails to the desktop, where they are saved as an eml file.
My idea was to use the Drag and Drop mechanism as a trigger for calling an Apple Script (out of my Java Application) which saves the selected mail(s) as eml, for my application later picking them up in an defined folder. Basically this works just fine BUT Mail as well as Outlook does not respond to the tell statement of my Apple Script until the dragged mail snaps back to the source application after about 20 seconds. While the Apple Script waits for the mail application to respond, both applications (mail application as well as my own application) show "Application not responding" in dock.
Does anybody have an idea how I can get the mail applications get to respond earlier? Probably a second instance, killing of the drag/drop event or anything else?
    Regards
    Benjamin

  • Applications not responding after Mavericks upgrade

Just upgraded an IMac-2009 of a friend from Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and faced Mail & Contacts not responding (spinning ball).
May be there coud be addtl applications not responding but i only checked the major ones and those 2 causes problems.
I just asked him to re-install OS-X (01:40) and i will see (am living far from him)
I have also read a lot of communities questions and have some lines of thinking like preferences & permissions.
    2 questions :
    1) Some ideas to help me
    2) is there a way to manage his IMac from home (I have a MacBookPro using Mavericks)
    Thank you in advance
    Best regards

    Hi,
Thanks for everything you provided to me : it helped me a lot.
The last status is (for info)
    - i decided to re-install Mavericks (for the 3rd time !!!) as the upgrade was so badly installed and i was surprised to see that this time, the re-installation shows "complements modules to re-install" (translated from french) with a schedule of 01:02 (against 01:40 before)
    - and apparently my friend called me later to say : everything is working fine. He recovered all applications.
Strange but I am happy by now.
    Thank you again

  • Application Not Responding - Mac OS X Lion & CS5

I keep having issues with my DW CS5 (11.0 Build 4993) & Mac OX Lion. I bought a new MacBook Air and installed DW CS5 on it, I did all the updates too for DW, but I'm having issues with it freezing and then crashing and not relaunching. I do some simple change on a website and the application freezes and says Application Not Responding. After force quiting I try and relauch and I get the green welcome screen like it's launching but then nothing comes up and it says Application Not Responding (ANP). I've tried restarting and sometimes that will make it so it actually launches completely but then after a while it starts up again with the ANP. I considered that maybe the MBA wasn't quick enough, but I think it's plenty powerful for doing DW. When I got back to my iMac at home I started to have the same issues after upgrading it to Lion. There seems to be an issue with CS5 and Lion. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Cody

CS5 was a fresh install on the MBA, on my iMac it was a fresh install as well (but back when I got the iMac a few months ago and was still using SL). I do have extensions on my iMac, but not on my MBA so I don't think that could be the cause (although I may try it and see). I usually would have Firefox, Safari running as well. Sometimes Photoshop and iTunes would be running too. If an error message does pop up it's usually the Mac's "Application Quite Unexpectantly" is that the type of message I should try and provide to Adobe?
I don't believe a specific action invokes the freeze/crash I've had it happen when I try and open an HTML page, when I try and save an HTML or when I try and select text to make a text change. I'll try and note exactly what I was doing the next time it happens, it seems to be speratic but very annoying cause it can take a few times of force quitting and relaunching to get DW to open back up.
    Thanks,
    Cody

  • 'Application not responding' message

I am new to iChat (and to Macs generally). The other day I tried out iChat (having set up a .Mac account) and everything seemed fine. But ever since then when I launch iChat the Buddies window comes up and the little spinning colour cicle goes round for ever and from the Dock the menu item at the top says 'Application not responding'. I have seen that others have had this problem but I don't seem to be able to access the answers they got. Any help would be much appreciated.

    Hi The Old Wreck,
Did you run through these screens ?
    http://www.siriusaddict.com/ichat.html
These should have enabled you to type in your Screen Name when you selected the correct account type.
If you are not sure then delete all the .plists for iChat.
This will mean going to /Users/(your Account)/Library/Preferences
(Open your hard drive then Users then your Account (little house iCon) then the Library in there then Preferences)
    Find these items
    com.apple.iChat.AIM.plist
    com.apple.iChat.Jabber.plist
    com.apple.iChat.plist
    com.apple.iChat.SubNet.plist
    com.apple.iChatAgent.plist
Put them in the trash (Delete them)
    Try iChat again.
It will make you go through the Start Up screens again.
    Also check the Address Book.
Find the Me Card (Head and shoulders icon)
Make sure this shows your details including your @mac name.

  • Application not Responding - CS5, OS10.6.8

If I have a CS5 application running w/ a document open, and switch to another running application, when I try to go back to the CS5 app (click on the document window or select the icon in the dock), I often get the spinning beach ball and the "Application not Responding" message (if I control/click on the dock icon). I need to Force Quit the app & restart. Happens frequently in InDesign, Illustrator & Photoshop. I'm on a MacPro w/ 6GB ram. Anyone else experiencing this / have a solution? - thanks

John, I deleted Extensis Suitcase Fusion and re-installed InDesign. It worked for a short time and now its crashing again. The crash report is still showing the problem to be Suitcase. What else can I do to get rid of all traces of Suitcase.
Bruno is correct, un-installing InDesign doesn't remove the Suitcase Auto-Activation Plugin from InDesign.
    0xa9b9000 -  0xab39ff3 +com.extensis.AutoActivationPlugin.ID7 (3.0.4.11 - 3.0.4.11) <C60215EF-E853-7053-497C-7AC0D279746A> /Applications/Adobe InDesign CS5/*/ExtensisFontManagementIDCS5
I'm not sure why it is indicated with a * instead of a precise folder name, but that's saying there is a ExtensisFontManagementIDCS5 plugin (probably in the Plugins folder!) inside /Applications/Adobe InDesign CS5 that is causing the fault. So if that's still there, remove it. (Perhaps Manage Plugins from Suitcase will do it for you. I'm not really familiar with Suitcase. But you can just remove the file by hand).
    By the way:
    Version:         7.0.0.355 (7000)
You really should update InDesign to the current patch release, 7.0.4. There are quite a lot of bugs in 7.0.0 that have been fixed. (Perhaps you had updated previously but those were lost with the re-install...)

  • Application Not Responding with 10.9.3 Upgrade

I have upgraded my software to 10.9.3 and now I am having serious issues with all of my applications just freezing up with all of the applications saying Application Not Responding.  I am using a iMac 2.8 GHz core, 4G Memory, 800 Mhz.  I have as much additional memory installed as I can.
    Thanks,

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.3 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.3 Update (Combo).
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.3 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.3 Update (Combo).
If 4 GBs of RAM is your computer's maximum, then you really should not be running Mavericks. Your best choice for such an older machine would be Snow Leopard.

  • Applications not responding leads to Disk Utility failure

    Hi everyone.
I have a mac mini running 10.4.8 and recently it started hanging up on applications (particularly firefox). I'd get "application not responding" messages and even when I wasn't doing anything at all to my machine, it would stop responding.
I tried to boot up off the install CD and run disk utility but got "The underlying task reported failure on exit"
    Unable to repair
    Unable to verify
Additionally, I cannot mount my volume. Nor can I get any options to reinstall/reformat as from the Installer my hard drive does not show up as an available volume to install on.
Also, when I try to startup, if I pick something other than the CD, it just flashes the grey apple screen for about 5-10 minutes and then shuts off.
It did, however, pass hardware test.
The error I get in First Aid before repair stops is "Invalid Node Structure"
But...I'm not sure where to go from here.
I haven't installed anything new and it was totally fine previously.

You have serious damage to the disk and will need to either buy Disk Warrior and see if it can repair the damage, or zero the drive and reinstall. If you have a recent clone the reinstall would be relatively painless. If you don't have your drive backed up to an external drive you now know why you should have done this. If you are lucky Disk Warrior will be able to repair the damage. I suggest that you immediately buy a firewire drive and install Tiger on it and then boot from the external and see if it is possible to recover your files that haven't been backed up from the internal drive. Do this even if Disk Warrior succeeds. Drives fail. The older the drive, the more likely it is to fail. Rule of thumb: don't fully trust any drive that is 5 years old or older. And always have backups. Always.

  • Itunes application not responding when I plug in my iphone

I am on itunes 8.2 and when I plug in my iphone itunes just goes into application not responding.
I wait for a while and then unplug the phone and it goes back to working again.
On the phone there is no "Sync" message. In fact with the phone plugged in I can access the phones apps just as if it was not plugged in.
But initially when I plug it in, it does the double vibrate and shows the charging graphic so I know the cable is ok.
The phone is already on 3.1 apparently because some new features are there... like selecting multiple photos to email.
But I don't recall ever running any updates in itunes to make it use the new software as I read you were supposed to do.
I don't want to upgrade to itunes 9 because I read so many people having problems with it... but I wonder if the phone is no longer compatible with itunes 8.2
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks.
    -Jeff

Do you know if the problems people have reported with itunes 9 was before the 9.1 release?
I've heard tons of people saying they were reverting back to itunes 8.2 because 9 was so bad.
Am a bit nervous about that update because of that.
But an applecare guy told me that the 9.1 was supposed to address those issues. I have just not heard anything about that actually fixing things though. Still seems like a lot of people are dreading the new itunes 9.
If you are an itunes 9 user, did you have any problems with it wiping out your library or any terribly long syncing times?
    Thanks.
