All applications shutting down and resetting

In the past two weeks, this has happened three times. I'll be in the middle of working on my Mac, and all the applications will quit and reset, as if I restarted the computer. Only, the computer doesn't actually restart. Any idea what this could be?

This happened to me in the old version of iMovie, so I upgraded to Imovie 11 and it's still buggy. It seems to happen after I have been working on the project for a while. Every photo that I drag in now has the same thumbnail as the last successfully dragged photo. It seemed to start after I downloaded a few photos from my online album and dragged them over from my downloads verses dragging them from Imovie. But now none show up properly in the movie. I have restarted but the bug is still there...Any fixes or upgrades, Apple?
Also, beward of upgrading while you are in the middle of creating a project in the older version on iMovie. My project all looked black when I opened it and I had to start all over.
Sigh...wondering if this video is even worth it.

  • Opening Word-- blue screen-- all applications shutting down?

Hi everyone! Today I closed my laptop to put it in sleep mode, it was not connected to power.
I came back an hour or so later, opened it up, and entered my password to log in. It started to log in and then I got a blue screen! In a few seconds it brought me back to my desktop, but all of the applications had shut down and Mail (which starts automatically) was opening and asking me for my passwords.
I thought that was weird behavior so I got my external hard drive and attempted to back up my computer. I started Googling the problem and then Safari randomly quit. I tried to email a paper I'm working on to myself, and I got the blue screen again! I plugged my computer in, hoping that would help. However, I got the blue screen two or three times before I was able to get a current backup. Each time the blue screen popped up, all of the applications would be shut down by the time the desktop came back.
EDIT: Ok, it definitely seems to be a problem with Microsoft Word. Every time I open it, the blue screen comes up! Such a pain. I'm going to Google it and try to work this out, but if anybody has any insights please let me know!
SECOND EDIT: Sorry to be such a pain, but I thought I had figured it out and then it happened randomly again! If anyone has dealt with this before, please let me know!

If the problem only occurs with MS Word then it's clearly a Word issue. Please repost at the MS Office forum located at:

  • Iphone 2g shuts down and reset date to january 1, 2000

    Hi all,
I have an iphone 2g 8gb, i actually bought it from a friend last year, been using it 7 months now with no problem or any issue. But just the other day January 5, 2011(Wednesday) while charging my phone, it shuts down then I opened it and saw the date as January 1, 2000. Edited the date to current then it shuts down again, i opened it and it was dated Jan 2000 again then shuts down..
I was thinking maybe it is the alarm bug. I don't who to run to since the phone is kinda old.
    Please help.
    Thanks!

Hmm. Not sure what is going on there.
Try powering it completely off and then on by holding down button on top until it allows you to slide to power off.
The restore as a new device if necessary(unplug at the new/from backup screen to test before setting up as new.
Worst case scenario: ask for an out of warranty repair price, if it is out of warranty.
Articles on how to do these things are on apple website, but my be easier found on Google.

Take a look at this article - note the special section on how to reset the SMC on laptops:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Follow the Notebook instructions and post back if that didn't solve the problem.
P.S. You should also consider to update your OS to the latest version.
P.P.S. I'm assuming you're talking about your Macbook since you posted in the iMac section.

If you restored to factory settings/new iPod via iTunes (Not via Settings>General>Reset>Erase all Content and Setting) and still have the problem that indicates a hardware problem.

When I try to open iPhoto I get a window dialog that says...
Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable
Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again. If the problem persists, try rebuilding your photo library. To do this, quit iPhoto, and then reopen it while keeping the Option and Command keys pressed. You can also try restoring your photo library from a backup.
I have tried the reopen it while keeping the Option and Command keyes pressed.
    No change.
I dee nothing but a blank page,
    Any help would be appreciated.
Also hace back ups of all images on cd's. dvds and jump drives.
    Any advice is appreciated.

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

I found all my files from my old account in the users folder but when I logged out there was no option to sign in on the old account, I'm guessing ill just have to start from scratch, which is fine as long as my old files aren't lost :) thanks for the help.
I'll explore more once I get my screen fixed and there might be a way to recover my old account :)

It's normal for the icons at the top level of the startup disk to revert to the same arrangement every time the Finder is relaunched. If it's important to you to arrange those icons in a persistent way, proceed as follows.
    Back up all data.
Open the Info window on the startup disk (labeled "Macintosh HD" unless you gave it another name.) Click the lock icon in the lower right corner of the dialog and authenticate.
In the Sharing & Permissions section, click the plus-sign button to add an entry to the access list. Give yourself "Read and Write" access. This will be a temporary change. Leave the dialog open.
Open the Finder window and arrange the icons as you wish, then close the window.
In the Info dialog, use the minus-sign button to delete the entry you just added to the access list. Don't change anything else. When you're done, it should be the same as when you started. Close the Info dialog.

  • Mini spontaneous shut-down and application shut-down problem

    Help!
    I've searched. I've read. I can't find the answer!
After I updated my firmware several weeks ago (to SMC 1.3f4), I've had problems with spontaneous shut-down of the computer, and a frustrating application shut-down issue (Safari, Mail, Word--you name it!).
I tried to find the other firmward update from last summer, which I read about in several posts from July/August, but the link is dead (Mac Mini Firmware update 1.0.1).
Coincidentally, after an office break-in two weeks ago, I FileVaulted my computer. I thought my problem must have to do with that, but all the posts I can find here are about this firmware thing.
Should I/can I reinstall the SMC 1.3f4 update? Is there some secret to the no-longer-available 1.0.1 update?
Can anyone help me? (I would certainly appreciate it!)

Try a safe boot, hold the shift key and power up, this will take a little loner than normal, hold the shift till you see the progress bar. See if it works normal, if it does than it is more than likely some 3rd party software. Then restart normal and check your console for panics. That would be your isssue.  You can also start holding command R and restoring from utililities.  Back up before you do anything.
