All apps slowed down after Mavericks upgrade.

As a non techie senior I approached the upgrade to Mavericks from OS 6 with trepidation , knowing many apps would be incompatible. An accidental sun with iCloud removed all my iTunes . I recovered them from the Time machine. The WI FI  network link intermittently goes out. (not sure this is related). The important ones all work, but loading of all Applications including this page) is much slower, especially web page loading. Hearing about others with similar issues,  I attached an EtreCheck report. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Slower performance after Mavericks upgrade

My Macbook Pro has been significantly slowed down by my upgrade to Mavericks. (Processor  2.3 GHz Intel Core i7) (Memory  8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3) (Graphics  Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB) I can't watch a 2 minute video without long... long rendering pauses.  I get error messages and find the computer quits and starts again at random moments.  Loading apps is slower.  I am not talented technically and need some layman version of how to use time machine or other backup info to go back to my Mountain Lion IOS or how to fix this deterioration of my computer performance.  I have run the etresoft app to provide more info.  Unfortunately I am very much a novice at problem solving computer issues so if this is above my paygrade please feel free to send me to more competent sources..

Do you know the reason for using WiFi Utility? It is not part of OS X and may be contributing to the problem.
Assuming you have no reason to use it:
Navigate to the following folder by selecting the entire line (triple-click to select it), then control-click, and from the contextual menu that appears, select Services > Open:
    /System/Library/StartupItems/
Find the file WiFiUtilityStartUp and drag it to the Desktop. You will need to authenticate.
Next: Open System Preferences by selecting it from the  (Apple) menu, then select Users & Groups. Click the lock icon and authenticate, then click your User account. Select the Login Items tab, then select the item WirelessUtility. Delete it with the "–" (minus) button.
Next: Backup Engine is not part of OS X either, and is unrelated to Time Machine, which you are using. It may have been installed as part of a utility supplied by Seagate or other hard disk manufacturer. Such utilities should not be used on Macs. If you have no reason to use Backup Engine, delete it as well using the "–" button.
Quit System Preferences, log out, and log in again. Reply with your results.

  • System slowed down after Mavericks update (10GB RAM)

    Hi,
I have recently updated to Maverics on my mac pro, 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 10GB RAM.
When I perform regular tasks it's all normal. Unfortunately I do some much more than that. I use Aperture on a daily basis and it seems to have slowed down a bit. The issue is more apparent when I use Final Cut. I can't have any other design/photography/video software on the background anymore. My computer can't deal with. But it could before Mavericks! It will also complain about not enough memory when rendering...
I understand that kernel task is heavy on the memory and after an EtreCheck I also realised how much memory spotilight is using. I already excluded a lot of items from spotlight, and it's way better, but still, why is my computer so slow?
Please can someone look at my check and tell me if there's anything I can do to boost my system back to it's previous glory?
    thank you

Beware of perceived RAM use. 10.9 uses RAM more efficiently:
About memory management in OSX 10.9 Mavericks
Memory is managed differently, and more efficiently in 10.9.  It is (mostly) unique in the industry, but may become trend.
Let’s start with the basics.  Mechanical disk drives are very slow, with access speeds in the 10s of milliseconds and transfer rates in the 200-400 Mbps range real world.  SSDs are much faster, on the order of a couple of ms access and typically 1200-3000 mbps transfer rates.  RAM is much faster than either, in the nanosecond access and transfer speeds of ~8 Gbps effective (1 GHz x 8 bits/byte).
These are rough numbers for comparison purposes only.
So the goal is to keep as much in RAM as possible. But if you run out of RAM what do you do?
Traditionally you take the least used RAM and write it to a special part of the disk, in a way that you can access it most efficiently - minimizing the disk delays.  This is called a swap file because you swap RAM in and out of it.
10.9 has a new trick:  it compresses RAM using the main processors.  Rather than swapping stuff to disk (disks are slow), it actually uses the processor to compress memory and make, for example, 1 GB of physical RAM hold as much as 1.5GB.  Similar approaches are used to make MP3 files 10x smaller than the real thing - there is redundancy in data and you can take advantage of that.  Apple is making the following calculation: the processors can compress way faster than the disk can swap.  And its also predicting that the processors are often partly idle - waiting for swap files or disk access.  So rather than swap files around, its compresses the files ***in RAM***.
Compression works,.  Tests show that on average it is faster, and that 4GB (i have 4 GB RAM) acts like 5 1/2 - 6GB.  Wow.
So, 10.9 will load up most of your RAM, knowing that it can compress some when it needs to.  So don’t worry too much that it may look like all your RAM is taken - yea, it is, but its OK.
The measures to look at are:
    1. amount compressed. Compression means it has run out of RAM and needs more. As long as compression is low this is fine. In fact this is how 10.9 uses RAM more efficiently than 10.6,7 or 8.  Contrary to common wisdom, it requires LESS RAM than 10.8. The colored indicator tells you who this is going - green (good), yellow( iffy) and red (bad).
    2. amount swapped.  Once it cannot compress any further, or can’t do so efficiently, jot begins old-fashioned swapping.  This is a major slow-down and means you would benefit from more RAM. Tiny amounts are OK.
here's an article by Apple - but on th pre-10.9 memory management techniques....mostly still true, but read on.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1342?viewlocale=en_US
Bottom line - compression makes 10.9 use RAM more efficiently than previous OSX versions.  It also makes the “ram used” indicator less meaningful, and mans you should monitor “compression” .
That said, RAM has always been one of the most cost effective upgrades possible.  People spend too much on new machines and too little on more RAM.
    Hope this helps,
    Grant

  • Slow Mac after Mavericks Upgrade

So this has been brought up multiple times in this community, but I wanted to give it a shot with my specific info.  I have attached my EtreCheck results for more info about my system.  I downloaded Mavericks right when it came out, and I have been struggling with this macbook ever since.  Many times it will take between 3-5 minutes to simply open an application like Mail or Safari, and when I restart the computer the problems never seem to subside.  I have reset the SMC multiple times.  The first reset I did, it seemed to fix the problem, but that only lasted for a few hours.  After that, no reset has done anything at all.  I'm thinking about upgrading my RAM to 8 GB, but I want to make sure that will actually fix the problem before I shell out the cash for that, and I was told to come here to see if anybody had any ideas.  Additionally, when I look at the hard drive storage, it is indicating I have 16 GB of movies, which I know is not the case so I'm not really sure what is going on there, or maybe that is the problem.  I have a windows partition that is completely filled, and have also thought about deleting the partiiton if that would alleviate some of the problems.  Thanks for reading this and any help you can provide!!

Did you check your hard disk for errors?
Back up your documents and everything else important to you, not that there is any reason to believe your hard disk may be failing, but the symptoms you describe may presage an impending disk failure, and you should have backups anyway.
Boot OS X Recovery by holding ⌘ and r (two fingers) while you start your Mac. At the Mac OS X Utilities screen, select Disk Utility. Select your startup volume (usually named "Macintosh HD") and click the Repair Disk button. Describe any errors it reports in red. If Disk Utility reports "The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK" in green then you can be reasonably (though not completely) assured your hard disk is in good working order.
If you have a backup that you created prior to using CleanMyMac, now is the time to use it. For Time Machine, boot OS X Recovery, and at the Mac OS X Utilities screen, choose Restore from Time Machine Backup. Choose a date preceding the installation of CleanMyMac.
If you do not have a backup, create one now, verify that it is a viable backup of your essential software and files, then erase your Mac completely, reinstall OS X and your essential software. When you reinstall your essential software, you must do so from their original sources, not from a backup that may have been corrupted.
Using CleanMyMac2 to remove files and components of files it considers "junk" will corrupt a Mac. Nothing less than erasing your Mac and rebuilding it from the ground up will undo the effects of having used it, and its developer's instructions for uninstalling it are not completely effective. I know no other way to recover from having used it other than these recommendations.

You have been up for ~17 days, and you have 1.72GB of pageouts.  That averages out to one page every 3 seconds, and we will assume you re not working 24/7, so when you are using your Mac you are spending a lot of time paging to disk.  Disks are slow.
As Kappy says, you are either concurrently running too may RAM hungry apps, or you have some apps that really want lots of RAM and you are running them a lot day after day.  Either "Stop That!", or get more RAM.
You could also consider a Solid State Disk, but that is not as good as having real RAM and would be more expensive than RAM unless you Mac is max'ed out on RAM.  Of course you could do both.  More RAM and an SSD
If you want to see the paging for yourself, start an Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal session, and run the command:
    sar -g 60 100
which will report the pageout stats every minute for 100 minutes (adjust the numbers to suit your tastes).
Now use your Mac as your normally would, including the times when it is running slow.  After you have experienced the slowness, go back and look at the 'sar' output.  If you have mostly zeros with maybe a trivial blip every once in awhile, that is noise and not a paging issue.  If you have some high numbers, then you are paging heavily at that time.  If you have sustained paging, even if small value, it is going to affect your performance.  High numbers will affect your performance even more.

  • My Mab Book Pro has 4gb Memory , i want to upgrade it, since i am seeing my system slow down after i upgraded to OSx MOuntain LIon

    Hi
After i upgraded to 10.8.2 i am seeing my MAc got slow.
And my memory is 4gb , if i increase  the memory will the system become faster.
Can we get it done this in Apple store .OR without upgrading hte memory cna we make this ystem to run faster ?

No.  Installing RAM doesn't make a computer faster.
Can we get it done this in Apple store
Sure, but why pay for that when you can do it yourself.

Have you checked activity monitor to see if any apps or processes are takin up a large percentage of the CPU?

  • CPU and GPU slow down after system upgrade

Ok, I can't find anything similar to the question I have...but this forum goes on forever
As my system specs appear below, my machine was running quite comfortably a week ago, with same setup...minus the acrylic case and second 120GB hard drive.
    At that stage I had "nomal" benchmarking scores 3dmark03 - 5850, Aquamark3 41.000, PC mark 2002 - cpu7020 mem8438 hdd1050.
Life was good and I loved my system
Then I decided it would be cool to upgrade to an acrylic case (which has better cooling with 3 fans) and a second 120 GB HDD to make a striped raid array.
My first concern was the raid Array. I was carefull to buy the exact same seagate hard drive, size etc. the original was only a month old anyway. The second was to use the intel southbridge chip for SATA RAID or the Promise controller? After researching these forums I decided to go with the Intel as it has more possible bandwidth and doesn't sit on the PCI bus.
I got the new case and wearing those stupid white gloves, proceeded to move the components over and trash my "old" metal case.
The windows NTFS format (full) flew by in 30 seconds and I was really impressed.
Once windows xp and all it's drivers and updates were installed, incl sound and graphics etc. I did a 3Dmark 2001 test before upgrading to Dx9...what a bad mark! 3Dmark2001SE - 9950 (terrible for this system).
    I thought it was a DX problem...so I installed Dx9
Then opened that corecenter program (the old one, the one that doesn't crash...)
and my CPU was about 5c hotter than usual, it was running at 40-42c (I have standard intel cooling fan). It went up to 55 at times when running PC mark 2002.
This didn't concern me too much a the system was stable at 32-34c and the northbridge read 60c (but we all know that's not true , more like 35ish.
    My PC mark 2002 is now cpu4200 - mem4800 - hdd1800
(at least the HDD improved!) LOL
    I ran Aquamark3 next...29,900 (ouch!)
Previously my CPU was 8,700 and GPU was 5300
now the CPU read 4400 and the GPU 4600
I don't really notice the speed loss when working, but games and benchmarks tell a different story.
So, My question: What has happened? Why is my CPU power cut in half? and the graphics card slightly slower? The memory speed stayed the same and the HDD speed improved....not a worthwhile upgrade IMO
    What went wrong?
    Here are my theories.
    1) The CPU and system case is getting too hot
Does the CPU "throttle" when it overheats? this could be the reason.
Also both HDD get really hot and the fan in front blows air over them, this hot air could be going over the CPU or GPU. Maybe get 2 HDD coolers?
should I buy a better CPU cooler like the Thermaltake spark7+ ?
    2) The PSU does not have enough watts
I couldn't find traces of voltage lack or spikes...but it could still be a problem
    3) The RAID0 array is a strain on the CPU and chipset
      I'm not sure about this.
My appologies for the lengthy thread, but I wanted to be sure that anyone trying to figure this out had as much info as possible
Thanks if u can help me figure this out.

Perhaps I should upgrade the overall cooling. Get a Thermaltake copper fan and two HDD coolers.
Well, your temps sound allright, no need to worry them, if they really operate at that level.

The solution to set the FSB to 201Mhz sounds good. But do I set this in the BIOS or with Corecenter in windoze?
Propably meant to adust your FSB at BIOS, at least that is what I would suggest.

I will try to re-install the VGA drivers because something strange DID happen when I first installed them. I started with the hercules driver CD, this installed CAT 3.2 drivers. I then upgraded to CAT 3.7 and before it completed I got an error window (send, dont send).
Remove drivers AND ATI control panel first, and then re-install. Use drivers from ATI site, and rather Catalyst 3.7. I Have had problems with 3.8 Catalysts.

Still wouldn't explain why the CPU seems so crippled. I have managed to get a "normal cpu score of 7000+ in PCmark2002 by shutting down, restarting later and killing every process except explorer.
Do you have any processes that seem to eat more juice thant hey should?  Arrange your processes by CPU usage and see if there is something strange.

If this cant be fixed I will reinstall over the weekend. Does anyone know of the RAID0 array on the southbridge causing a system slowdown?
I'm using Intel RAID and it works perfectly, no extra CPU usage is shown and it's pleasantly fast!
And Install latest Intel INF updates and Application Accelerator from Intel site. That's what I'm using, and works fine.

  • Slow Shutdown after Mavericks upgrade

My macbook pro takes longer to stut down than it used to do.  Before Mavericks it took about a second to shut down.  Now it takes at least 10 seconds.  Below is my system log  and below that is an etrecheck scan result.  Any help in restoring the shutdown to its usual self will be much appreciated

  • Failed to verify preflight file ... App Store broken after Mavericks upgrade

I upgraded my OS X to Mavericks and the install was very smooth. Since then, however, I cannot update any apps or purchase new ones in the App Store. I receive a message saying "Failed to verify the preflight file. It is not signed by Apple. The application will be available from the Purchases page." Unfortunately the same thing happens when I use the Purchases page as well.
Am I doing something wrong or did something break with App Store after my installation?

What worked for me was changing the certificate preferences in Keychain Access (open Keychain Access app and then go to preferences).
I just changed both of the first two options to 'Best Attempt', they were originaly at 'Require if certificate indicates'.
    Hope this Helps

  • Apps launch slowly after mavericks upgrade

I upgraded to 10.9 Mavericks on release day. Been mostly happy with it. Except- apps launch really slowly now. Sometimes they take 10 seconds to launch. I'm hoping there's a solution that doesn't involve a clean install. So far, my searches have turned up nothing helpful. Any ideas?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

    Suggestions

    Hello DennisBoyd68,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information on this, take a look at:
    If your Mac runs slowly

An app you’re using may require more memory than your computer has. To see how much memory your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac.
Your computer’s startup disk may not have enough free disk space. To make disk space available, you can move files to another disk and then delete files you no longer need on the startup disk.Increase disk space
Quit any apps you’re not using.
If none of these suggestions work, you may need to repair your computer’s disk in Disk Utility.Repair a disk
    Best of luck,
    Mario

  • 'All Mail' Folder disappeared after Mavericks upgrade

Before upgrading to Mavericks my mail app had an 'All Mail' folder in the G Mail section on the left hand side of my mail app. This area below 'On My Mac' has folders I created and below that a section that automatically appeared called G Mail. In it is obviously all my g mail but one folder that was particularly useful in finding all g mails that have been sent, deleted, etc. from my Mac, iPad or iPhone is gone. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folders. In OS X 10.9 there are two sandboxes, while in 10.8 there is only one. If you're running a version older than 10.8, this comment isn't applicable.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Log out and log back in. Launch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.MailServiceAgent
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Time Capsule backing up all my media again after Mavericks upgrade

    Hello.
Since I've upgraded to Mavericks my Time Capsule is trying to Backup all my media since location of iTunes Library (media) changed in iTunes 11.
The problem is I have a huge music library (over 300GB), therefore I don't and won't let my Time Capsule back it up again. It would take days.
By now I've just "excluded" the "music" and "podcast" folders from my Backup thread, but this is a temporary solution. I don't want to lose all my music in case something goes wrong with my HD.
The question is: Is there any work around to this situation or the only solution is to Backup everything again?
    Appreciate any help.
    Thanks.

My oh my, slightly exceeds your lifespan.. three score and 10 or if you are strong four score..81,000 years hmmm..
Are you using Lion.. 10.7.5 to be exact .. you are subject to a serious bug, created by Apple and not fixed before release to all computers.. great the level of testing Apple does now..  think of yourself as a beta tester..
Here is the patch to update to the patch.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1599
If you are on a different OS tell us.. ML can have similar if not quite so bad issues.
The bug may have corrupted the old backup which is why it needs to be replaced. Unfortunately once it restarts the backup I doubt you can recover what was there.. it seems your backups now need backups if there happened to be anything you actually want.
I strongly recommend at the moment getting another software backup program.. superduper, CCC, chronosync.. something designed to create a single image.. and not self corrupt.

  • Slow computer after Mavericks upgrade

A while ago I had to update my Mac to OS X Mavericks (Version 10.9.5), but I experience that this has made my computer slow. It is slow when starting, when I use the internet, when I search files on the computer etc. Not incredibly slow, just annoyingly slow.
I had to do the upgrade to Mavericks to be able to run a program I use frequently.
I have a lot of free storage: 526 Gb free (out of 749 Gb).
Now I wonder if there is anything I can do to make the computer faster? Should I upgrade to Yosemite - or should I definitely not do that?
I'd appreciate very much if there is any good advice out there.
My computer is a MackBook Pro (15-inch) from mid 2012.
