All browsers crash when uploading photos!

Hi,
I've had a problem for a while now which is getting really annoying: both Firefox (latest version) and Internet Explorer "unexpectedly quit" instantly as soon as I try to upload photo files. This happens as soon as I click any 'browse' button (to upload files) on any webpage.
I used to be able to get my files online by using Safari instead, but today it began to crash too, in exactly the same way! I tried clearing Safari preferences, etc. as an experiment, but it didn't help.
A possibly unrelated but equally mysterious problem has also cropped up recently involving my passwords - first my banking website, and now Shutterfly, have started rejecting my (correct) password several times before they will accept it and let me in! And yes, I'm sure I'm typing it correctly.
Both these problems seem to be getting worse, and I now have no way of uploading anything to the web. Could this be some sort of virus? (I thought such things didn't exist in Macland...
I'm reluctant to just upgrade to the latest Mac OS in case it has other problems... and I certainly don't want to do it unless it will solve my browser issues!
If anyone has any advice, I would be most grateful.
cheers from Down Under,
ashlingirl

Hi there, and thanks so much for tackling my strange problems! I'll try to answer your questions point by point - I am more or less computer literate, but once we hit the technical stuff I usually leave it to my programmer husband. Unfortunately, he's overseas on business right now, so I'll have to hack this one myself. So here we go:
Hi,
To understand what's going on here, we'll probably
have to know a bit about your network. (Passwords can
be cached; the browsers could be timing out; there
could be many reasons why you're seeing what you're
seeing.)
First, however, there are no viruses for Mac OS X.
What you are seeing therefore cannot be a virus.
Second, let's take a look at your network. How do you
connect? Are you on a LAN? Wifi? Are other people on
your network with you?
We have a wireless LAN in our house, with broadband DSL Net access (using a Netgear router). My Mac, however, is hooked directly into the router - my husband just uses the wireless functionality for his laptop. No one outside our family uses the network, and as I said my husband is away at the moment, so my computer is the only one online.
Third, could you describe what happens when your
password is rejected? There's a difference between a
quick rejection and one that takes a long time,
because the latter could be a time-out.
The password thing is weird, because it's not consistent. Yesterday, for instance, I logged onto Firefly about 10 times in a row, because the browser kept crashing and I was trying different things to fix it. At first, it would just spit me back to the login page once (immediately, with no delay, and no error message), but then when I typed in the same password the second time, it would let me in. Which is strange enough - but by the end of my session, I couldn't get it to let me in at all, no matter how many times I tried. It would just immediately send me back to the login page, over and over again.
Fourth, have you tried an FTP client to upload
photos? (This may not be possible with the services
that you use, but I don't use them, so I don't know.)
Here's where I admit my ignorance: I don't know what an FTP client is. The main thing I'm trying to do is to upload photos to either Shutterfly.com (so my relatives in the US can view/print them easily) or eBay. Don't know whether a separate upload program would be usable in these circumstances.
I actually suspect the problem I have is with the little Java plugin that Shutterfly uses as a picture-download interface. Maybe lots of websites use similar bits of code, and that's why I'm having trouble on all of them.
But all I really know is that every time I hit a "Browse" button on any website (which normally brings up a menu showing the contents of my desktop and lets me choose files to upload), my browser dies. And this happens on Mozilla Firefox, IE, and now Safari too.
Fifth, take a look at the Console logs. The Console
app is in Applications > Utilities. It will show you
what the applications say right before they crash and
die. Also, in the Console app, you can look at the
crash log for Firefox and Safari.
I got in there, and there is certainly heaps of info: the problem is, I don't know what most of it means. Would you mind terribly if I just paste all of yesterday's activity here and see if anything jumps out at you? Here goes:

Whew! Thanks so much (again) for wading through my quagmire of computer angst. They're great when they work, but when things go wrong it's enough to make you want to slash your wrists! I always tell my husband I don't know how he does it.

  • IPhoto crashes when uploading to Flickr

    Hello,
Recently, I purchased a Flickr Pro account to backup all of my pictures (30,000+).  All of my pictures are currently in iPhoto 11 (9.4.1) and I'm using the built in Flickr upload option.  I've been able to upload most of the pictures, but with some frustration.  Every so often when uploading photos to Flickr, iPhoto crashes.  I've tried all sorts of things: (1) Limiting event sizes to well below 500 -- the max per set on Flickr; (2) Trying to upload only pictures in events (no video as it seemed iPhoto tended to crash when video was involved; (3) Looked on numerous forums for answers, but I couldnt' find anything that was an exact match to my issue; (4) Uploading only one Event at a time; (5) Uploading multiple events at a time.  iPhoto still crashed during all of these options
So, long story short, does anyone have any other suggestions for me to try?  Have you had similar issues?  Thanks in advance.

and I'm using the built in Flickr upload option.
This may not be the right thing to do.
This syncs with Flickr, and if you remove photos from iPhoto (or if they get trashed in a HD crash or something) then the photos will be removed from Flickr next time you log in and sync.
Best to use a direct uploader like http://connectedflow.com/flickrexport/

  • My firefox crashed when upload file on our web based application. This happen on two PC, even during firefox safe mode the problem still exist. But the problem

    Dear All,
My firefox (version 23 on win 7) crashed when upload file on our internal web based application. This happen on two PC, even in firefox safe mode the problem still exist. So, my first conclusion the problem nothing to do with extension. here the crash ID https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/81220865-36c0-4e10-a484-6d27e2131023 and https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/86d2b779-9730-4d2c-b276-a86d42131023. I wonder if this happen because jquery modul in our web based application. But when I tried on my laptop, the problem dissapear. I tried to replicate same situation on different server, I mean I put the exact same application source to other server, never meet the same problem. Thus, I suspect may be it related to antivirus that installed in our network which is kaspersky. I am googling, never meet the clue.
If you meet the same problem, please help me.
I am so sorry for my poor english.

  • Is ILife 11 the current version today? Will its purchase upgrade my Iphoto 8.2.1 to Iphoto 11? I have a Macbook, Maverick and Iphoto is crashing when exporting photos.  I understand ILife is the way to fix it.

Is ILife 11 the current version today? (May  2014).  ILife 11 on Amazon appears to be 3+ yrs old?
When searching for ILife 11 on the Apple Store, I am directed to a separate purchase of Iphoto version 9.
Somewhat confusing, Apple is always so clear with these things.
The goal is to upgrade my Iphoto 8.2.1 to Iphoto 11.
I have a Macbook Pro, Maverick 10.9.2 and Iphoto is crashing when exporting photos.
I understand ILife is the way to fix it.
    Thanks!

The current version of iPhoto is iPhoto 9.5.1., and it is the latest version of iPhoto '11.
If you are running Mavericks 10.9.2, you can buy iPhoto 9.5.1 from the AppStore - it is the currently sold version.
The iLife bundle is called iLife '11, and the iPhot version in iLife '11 is iPhoto 9.x.x. - that is confusing allright
I have a Macbook Pro, Maverick 10.9.2 and Iphoto is crashing when exporting photos.
While it is certainly useful to upgrade to the current iPhoto version to be fully compatible with MacOs X 10.9.2, there may be a differnet reason for the crashes. Is there an error message with the crashes? When did these start? Did you import new photos or videos? Install other software?

Safari, App Store, iCloud all instantly crash when I try to open them on iOS 7.
On iPhone 5s. Cannot back up (on cloud) or even enter settings for any of the apps as it crashes again.
Luckily had Chrome installed or would not be able to go online. Ideas?

If you have apps that crash as soon as you attempt to access them and resetting the network settings had no effect I would then go straight to restoring the device back to default settings. Once restored to default I would try the device to see if this resolved the issue BEFORE restoring the backup to the device. It's likely the issue you are having has to do with corrupted software.

  • ITunes Match crashes when uploading final songs and artwork

For some strange reason, everytime iTunes Match tries to run its course it crashes when uploading final songs and artwork. As a result I now have tons of albums with tracks showing "Waiting" and are not able to being played in any of my other devices such as iPhone 5 and Mac Mini, they're just showed greyed out.
What could be causing this weird problem. BTW I'm stil using iTunes 10.7 since I didn't like the 11 one.

    Hi,
There may be a faulty track that is preventing match process to complete.
Do you have any large files waiting to be uploaded? What format are the songs "waiting" to be uploaded? You may need to delete those files from library but not moving to trash. If match completes the process, you can then start adding the songs a few at a time.

  • Browsers crash when I try to upload anything

Anytime I try to upload anything onto my facebook, youtube, or filedropper account, with any browser, it crashes. All of my software is up-to-date and I've tried restarting my computer and the same thing happens. And when I try to upload photos to facebook via iPhoto, the pictures are uploaded...sorta. They appear all distorted like they got wet and were dragged across a canvas or something. Does anyone know how to fix this?

If you have not already or recently, be sure to run Disk Utility and use +Repair Disk Permissions+.
Did these actions work before as expected, when using this iMac with this system installation?
As a test to better isolate the cause, create a new admin user account in System Preferences Accounts pane.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8235.html
Log out and log in to your new account. Use the new account and try those things causing problems. Does it work properly in the new account?
If it does, the cause is likely to be something in your current user account. If it does not, the cause is to be something at the system level, or possibly hardware-related. In this case, it seems more likely to be software-related, at either the user or system level. Once you know that, it will be easier to do additional troubleshooting.

  • When uploading photos with the SD card reader Photos creates three Albums "last imported" , "All imported"

when I upload photos with the ipad2 card reader it uploads three the photos three times into three albums: "last Imported", all imported" and the "file name".  What if i only want the album once?  rwb

There is only one copy of each imported photo. The photos are not duplicated.
For those who import photos regularly, the last import may be important to them instead of all imported photos being available in All Imported.
All imported photos are stored in All Imported. The photos in Last Imported include a pointer to the original photos stored in All Imported. The photos are not duplicated, just as placing a song in an iTunes playlist does not duplicate the song.

  • When uploading photos to Photobucket or Imgur or select forums either nothing happens at all or I get the "connection was reset" error. I have no problem uploading photos to other forums and FB. Firewall disabled, Spyware Doctor OFF, UAC off. Win 7-64.

I have cleared the cache and history on both IE and firefox. When I try to upload photos to Photobucket, I get "IOException" and when I try to upload photos to paleoplanet (yuku) I get the "The connection was reset" firefox error. I can upload photos to FB and other forums just fine. I tried to use Imgur instead of Photobucket and I get a similar failure.

    Hi Trond,
Extremely helpful observations here. Am sure quite some folks will hit this thread!

  • Os X crashes when uploading images - parental controls?

    hey world
we've had this issue for a while now where our imac crashes when my daughter attempts to upload an image to her tumblr page.
this isn't just a browser crash - its one of those doozys where the whole screen goes grey and we get the message asking us to shut the computer down by holding the power button etc etc.
we tried resetting the browser (firefox initially), trashed the prefs and disabled all addons. still it crashes on upload. we tried chrome, still it crashes.
the tricky thing is, when we repeated the steps under my login (admin), it all works fine.
after much testing we have narrowed this down to the fact that my daughters account has parental controls active.
the controls are set to limit login times, and for a maximum of 1 hour on school nights. there are no limitations to the system or firewalls, just the time limits.
when I deactivate parental controls she can post to tumblr just fine. as soon as I switch the controls back on, bam! it crashes.
there is a workaround for this - we discovered that safari works just fine with parental controls in place.
but we'd really rather use firefox. and surely we should be able to..?
i thought I'd post our problem to see if anyone else has experienced this when using the parental controls settings. I'm wondering if upgrading to lion will resolve this problem - so if anyone has done this and can advise if it will work, please let me know.
    our system is as follows:
2.16ghz intel core 2 duo white imac
    2gb 667 mhz ddr2 SDRAM
    OS X 10.5.8
    thank you!

Hmmm, I can't test as I have no tubler account, but some differences between Firefox & Safari is that Safari uses Sys Prefs fpr things like Proxies & DNS, where FF can use it's own.

  • Organizer crashes when moving photos to another directory

Shortly after upgrading (?) from PSE 7 to PSE 8, i discovered that my catalog had become corrupted.  When viewing photos by folder location, many photos are shown as being in an incorrect folder in the directory tree on the left.  The correct location is shown in the Properties panel.  If I try to move the photo to the correct folder by dragging it to the correct folder PSE crashes in both PSE 7 and PSE 8.
I tried to repair the catalog (File/Catalog/Repair), but no problems were found or fixed.
Any other ideas other than removing the photos from the catalog and re cataloging them?  If I do that, will I loose tags, comments, dates, etc?
    Thanks, Don

    http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/photoshop-elements-faq.htm#_Folder_Location_view
The easiest solution is to stop using Folder Location View. Use tags and metadata to find photos.
Re-importing photos into the catalog is not recommended, as you will lose all of your version sets, stacks, collections, creations, and a few other things. Tags, captions and notes are only available upon re-import if you tell PSE to write them to the files before you do the re-import (and because of a bug in PSE, this is not a reliable operation, especially if you have Raw photos)
