All desktop folders disappeared

One day after I started up my ibook, I noticed all my desktop folders and info were gone. No where to be found. Luckily there wasn't a lot of important info there.
Everything on the hard drive is still there, all my apps, etc.
Is there anything I can do to retrieve the folders without paying someone to try to retrieve the info? The trash is empty so nothing is there.
When I search for something that was on the desktop, the search results say
"The alias could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found."
Then the options are: Delete Alias, Fix Alias, OK.
Any suggestions? Any options that don't involve painstaking code etc.?

Hi cornelius,
This is so odd, I just posted almost the identical reply at about the same time you did but mine is not showing up in thread for me. It does show in my posts but by no method going back to the thread is it showing for me....very strange.
Looks like Discussions is having another prolonged delay to posting again for some reason.....I'll hop over to Feedback About Discussions to see if others are seeing this...of course by the time you see this my post will most likely be showing up....
hope all is well with you,

edit: Yep, there they are....strange that the posts are taking so long to post to the thread...

  • All desktop folders, finder & the dock have disapeared, what can I do?

I was downloading a widget (acorn) & all my folders disappeared, then spaces, then the dock after about 5 minutes. After a restart firefox was there but nothing else. The desktop folders are there when browse in gmail, but it freezes & quits when try to open them. I see that other people have had similar problems, but cannot find many answers.. Will I need to get another Leopard install disc, as no longer have it?? Mac ownership seems very lonely at times!

could be failing hard drive or corrupted files, in any case as the first step
you'd have to try to start up from another source - external hard drive with the compatible OS on it or from the OS install CD/DVD

This is sometimes caused by Bad Blocks on the Hard Drive.
If 10.7, hold down Command-R at startup, and choose Disk Utility.
If 10.6 or earlier, boot to the Installer/Utilities DVD, answer only the "what language" question and wait for the MenuBar to be drawn. Choose Disk Utility from the Utilities Menu.
Select your Hard drive by Make & Model and check the SMART Status (lower right of the right window). Choose "Repair Disk" . This ONLY examines and repairs the Directory area of the drive, but may improve things a bit. If errors cannot be repaired, you may need a stronger tool, or a new drive.

  • All Desktop Folders COPY items to and from, not move

I just installed 10.6 on one of my computers, my tricked-out Mac Pro.... but now when I go to move anything in or out of any of the desktop folders, the files COPY to the desktop and do not MOVE to the desktop.
I have looked for some setting and can't find it. This is just really weird... do I need to re-install?

Hey CT, I'm have the same problem which is how I found you guys tonight talking about this. I used to be annoyed enough when XP or Vista took 45 mins to "move" 3 GB of data but I fell out out of my chair when 10.6 wanted to take 8 hours to copy 80GB from one folder up one level to the top directory. I was so baffeled and ******, I put a fan on the MacBook Pro and went to the gym when it "COPIED" one level up.
I do have a contact at Apple and would love to get to the bottom of this because this is something I can't even bring up at a party with PC people at!!

  • Desktop folders shift off screen and are not visible

Every so often, my dock and all desktop folders shift to the right.  Some of the folders are now off the screen.  How do I move them back to the visible portion of the screen?  Thanks.

    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Move the selected item to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Relaunch the Finder and test. If there's no change, put the item you moved back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Otherwise, delete the item you moved.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Folders disappear and come back when browsing micr...

    Dear all,
Have searched the forums extensively but cannot find the solution to the following problem:
    Windows XP SP2
    PC suite 6.84 10 3
    Nokia 6233
Micro SD 64MB (came with phone)
Bluetooth connection to ACER 803LMi (working ok)
When browsing the phone via PC Suite, all files and folders on the phone memory (C-drive on phone) can be seen and used. However, when browsing the 'Extra' folder on Micro SD card (E-drive on phone) and clicking on a standard subfolder (pictures, music files, etc), then all these folders disappear one by one and directly come back after disappearing. I can't however for example see the music files in the music folder, although they are there when playing them on the phone.
In addition, it happend also when using the pc suite 6.70 rel 25 that came with the phone but it still also happens with 6.84.
Hope someone can help or redirect me in case I missed the topic if already discussed.
    thanks,

    Hi Miksu,
Yes, when I tried to copy music with PC Suite, it created a new folder 'Music' and that shows in the phonebrowser including the files in there. I then also changed the destination folder in PCS to the standard 'Extra - Music Files', however it then created a new folder 'Music Files' and didn't use the folder already there.
I'll try to copy some new files in all subfolders under 'Extra' and let you know the outcome of what the phonebrowser does. I'm merely a somewhat senior end-user (understanding what is said in the forums) but not really the go-into-all-technical-details guy. I'm really happy with this phone and don't want to crash it already.
Maybe this topic however can help others.
    thanks again,
    Coffey

  • I've lost all the files that were on the desktop.  All the folders  are still there with subfolders but the files have all disappeared.  Someone please help!

It's been over a month since I accessed my files for work. (microsoft office, photos, videos) Today when I came in to work I realized that all the files on my desktop had disappeared. (it's just the desktop) I didn't do anything with my computer.  I didn't use my computer for almost the entire month.    I don't know where they are or what happened.  I really need these files back ASAP..... help please!

Unless the files were dumped in the Trash unintentionally, your files are still on your computer, somewhere. It's pretty easy to put files or folders in places without knowing it, but there is a good technique to find your data.'
Think over a file or folder whose name is familiar. Then, press Cmd-Space at the same time, which brings up Spotlight - the easiest way to locate files, folders, history, and much more. If you end up with a blank the first time, try again until you have a hit. If you have a hit, note the location of the files/folder; it's likely that all of your lost documents are in the same place.
Post if you have success, or need more help!

  • Hello, all the documents in all the folders on the desktop have been disappeared. I did not do anything. I did not install or remove anything. Does anyone know the reason?

Hello, all the documents in all the folders have been disappeared. Especially documents on desktop. I have not install or remove anything. Do you know the reason? What should I do?

In order to restore something from Time Machine, the backup must occur before the lose.
A backup after the lose is worthless.
    The files are gone now.

  • Almost Lost All My Folders/Data On Desktop After OS 10.5.3 UpdateToday

Folks, I need to report what happened today on my MacBook after I did the 10.5.3 update today. After the long updating process, the laptop restarted 2-3 times automatically until it finally got to my desktop. But to my surprise, every single folder and icons for files that I stored on my desktop had disappeared!! HELP. My HD is partitioned and my archive section had some of the data that was on the desktop, but I hadn't done my work backup yet. I then opened iTunes and got an error message that the app couldn't open and couldn't the index file.
I prepared for the worst. I immediately repaired permissions which I do anyway after software updates. The repair took awhile to finish up and the fan came on pretty fast. Then I got my LaCie BU FireWire HD and DataRescue ready for action. The external HD wouldn't mount. I figured because of the update, it's possible I would need a firmware fix now. Anyway, I restarted, the color ball was spinning, and miraculously one by one, all my icons were restored as well as my folders. I then did a complete immediate backup and my iTunes opened perfectly, nothing lost.
Anyway, all I can say is to all who do the update, better be sure your BU is done before doing the OS update. This the first time this has ever happened of any and all updates I have done previously.
Good luck and let us know if you experienced this same glitch after updating
    Steve

Yes, we are warned and we get lazy and "trust" our Macs to never fail, especially when we do sw updates. I definitely got lucky this time and learned my lesson, believe me. What I don't understand is why did everything disappear after the first restart, but then was restored after repairing permissions and the next reboot. Everything appeared like magic. Saved me a lot of recovery time

  • Desktop Wallpaper folders disappearing/reappearing in System Prefs

I recently upgraded to a 15 Inch MBP with Retina Display and I have a problem with desktop wallpapers.  I migrated everything across from my old mac and when I go into System Prefs > Desktop & Screen Saver there is a list of all the folders I've added with all my wallpapers in.  I've deleted these out because the wallpapers are no longer suitable for the new display.  I've then added in a couple of new folders with retina wallpapers in and everything is fine.  The problem occurs when I quit System Prefs and go back into it, all my old folders have reappeared and all my new folders have disappeared.  Due to this problem sometimes when I boot up my MBP the wallpaper has changed to something random.
I'm getting a bit fed up with removing and adding the folders back in now, is there any reason why it might be doing this or is there a solution?

I purchased a Macbook Pro (2012, non-retina) and I have the same issue.
I went to the Genius Bar, and we went through the same steps I took before (deleting plist files, repairing permissions). The issue is system-wide; My admi account, Guests, new Users all experience it.
We could not solve the issue. The Genius' best answer was that this generation might have a bug in its particular build of 10.7.4. I ultimately had a choice of waiting for Apple to discover the bug, or live with it.
I'm about to attempt a reinstall of Lion. I doubt it will help with anything, since I can't download a fresh copy from the App Store (apparently having 10.7.4 preinstalled means I can never have access to a fresh copy).
I'm concerned, as I have no idea if this sort of issue is contained only to this preference, or if it can end up screwing with me later on, say in the middle of an iPad app I'm developing.
The only work-around I can suggest: Don't close System Preferences for the entire time the Mac is on. If you log out or reboot, you'll have to set up your folders again, but if you never close System Preferences, they will remain.

  • Help! All my desktop files disappeared.

I need help as quickly as possible.

why do all my desktop folders appear to be empty?..all of  a sudden....If I do an 'open,' I see a little red circle on the upper right hand corner with an arrow. When I click it, it tells me I have  number X files in the folder. But...I cannot see them....

You have done something which change the permissions and your user is not able to access anymore. You can play around and try to correct permissions manually by going to your home folder, right click on the Desktop folder and choose get info and when new window will be open, at the bottom of it, check if your username is listed and if has Read & Write permissions.
Other option is to boot to recovery mode (after starting up your computer press and hold CMD+R), then from top panel click on Utilities and choose Terminal. Once terminal is open, type in it resetpassword and when new window will be open, select Macintosh HD as your system drive, select your password and click on the RESET button which is next to "Reset home folder permissions and ACL". NOTE: do not reset your password, you don't have to.
Second options would be better in case if permissions on other folders been changed too.

  • I lost a folder, with all the pictures, while trying to move some photos to a diferent folder (both folders disappeared)

I was trying to move some pictures from a folder to another, but all the pictures disappeared! Even the folder that the pictures were! I searched all my computer but I can't find them! Does anyone know what can I do??
Before I lost all pictures a message appeared asking if I wanted to replace the photos that have the same name, and I said "yes" and "do this to all"; after that a message appeared saying that there was an error and the pictures were note moved, but all my files disapeared!!
I search even the trash (it is empty) and don't know whatelse to do!
    I would appreciate any help.
    Thanks

First of all, we'd need to know what version of Bridge, Photoshop and the OS you are using.
One of the earliest versions of Bridge was indeed known occasionally to disappear files and/or folders, but that was a long time ago, in CS2 I believe.  Later versions do not do that.
Do a search for the names of the files and or folder(s), not with the pretty useless Spotlight or the Finder Search (which uses the same, limited Spotlight search engine).  Instead, try the free EasyFind.  http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/8707
Second, I'll assume you mean folder when you type "a file with all my photos in it". Unless you put the folder in the trash and then deliberately emptied the trash, it's more likely you just accidentally stuck the folder inside another one, or accidentally renamed it.  EasyFind will find it or its contents.
If EasyFind fails to find a trace of any of the files or of the folder, then the files are indeed gone. but that 's highly unlikely unless you deliberately empied the trash.
    Good luck.

I have Thunderbird 24.5.0. When I double click the desktop item to open it up, it opens immediately, but when I'm in the main page with all the folders on the left & the corresponding email details on the right of that same page, it seems to have problems. Before, when I would highlight a certain box / folder (whether it would b “inbox”, “sent” folder, “trash” folder, or whatever, it takes a good 5 min (minimum) to open that certain folder so I can see the emails of that folder.
Can u help me determine what is causing this? Just 3 days ago, it was fine.
    Thank you

  • Desktop shortcuts and folders disappearing but still virtually available on SSD

    Hi,
I've had a bit of an issue today where I loaded up my PC (Windows 7) and half my desktop has disappeared, At the moment as I run dual monitors, when I first attached my second monitor many months ago some of my desktop icons were chucked to the right and
some to the left but with this case they have disappeared.
When I shut down my PC last night everything was okay and nothing was missing (I did install a few game updates last night but that is the norm for me) Today, the shortcuts that are missing are still available on my SSD (:D) drive which is set as first boot
order. I can search to the desktop folder on the SSD and all shortcuts are intact. The desktop currently running is from my standard hard drive (:C) which was more of a backup and for space. On the "My Computer" screen i'm 100% sure my SSD was first
in the list (left in list) but it appears now to have switched with my regular hard drive
Can anyone tell me a way to reverse this? i've tried system restore but as it assumes my last restore point was the windows updates that installed today (As the only restore points it looks for is the hard drive and not SSD)
I would really appreciate any help.
    Thanks

    Hello Jason2710,
This can happen if the the System Maintenance troubleshooter detects the shortcuts as broken.
