All drives apart from boot drive completely wiped!! HELP!!

Just booted up my G4 1.25GHZ which has an internal drive and 2 firewire drives attached. All files on all the drives apart from the boot drive have dissapeared.
The drives are empty1 That's 600GB of data that's just vanished. The only thing I can think of is I'm using Personal Backup from Intego for backing up data mostly in the background and it seemed to be taking ages to repair permissions yesterday. But it wasn't backing up on all the drives.
I'm trying Techtool pro to recover the data but I need to know what happend...
Help if you can, thanks.

Have you tried the drives on another computer to see if the files are showing up? This might be a problem with the FireWire jacks or OS X not recognizing it anymore, it happened to me once, I had to reinstall Panther at the time and it was a bad memory chip that caused OS X to behave improperly.
If the drives work on other systems, you should try reinstalling OS X and if it still does not work, try the Hardware Test that came with your computer.

Hopefully you moved the entire iTunes Media (or iTunes Music) folder to a new path on your external drive. Copy your iTunes library folder out to the root of the external drive, e.g. X:\iTunes (where X: is your external drive), then move the media folder inside it. Hold down shift as you start iTUnes and keep holding untila asked to choose or create a library. Choose the library at X:\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl. Should all be good.
Failing that, download and run my FindTracks script and point it at the new location of your media folder.

  • Which drive is the boot drive?

I installed a 2nd hard drive in my G4 dual 1ghz sometime around 2001. I'm now on a G5 and would like to pull the 2nd drive from the G4 and put it in a firewire enclosure to use with the G5. How can I tell which drive is the boot drive and which is the secondary drive? I kind of remember that the 2nd drive went in the lower bay but I'm not 100% sure. Any other caveats to pulling out this drive? Thanks in advance.
    Power Mac dual 1ghz

The system profiler should tell you the serial number of the hard drive, or type of hard drive when you select it in the IDE bus. Compare that with the label on the drive itself.
Both bays can have boot drives, though typically master jumper drives are better able to boot than slaves on certain operating systems.
You can tell the existing boot drive, because it is the first drive that appears in the upper right hand corner of the desktop if you view and arrange the desktop by kind.
If you just want to transfer data over from a G4 to a G5, you may want to use Target Disk Mode:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
Note, if the G4 is the kind that can boot into Mac OS 9, set it as the Target machine. In addition, if it is running 10.2.2 or earlier it should be the target machine, because 10.2.2 and earlier don't understand the Journaled operating system which may be installed on your G5.

  • My external drive switched from g drive to f, my itunes won't change to drive f, and it says drive g is unavailable, what can I do?

This is not the easiest sight to sign up for and submit a question. However my external drive switched from g drive to f. As I downloaded the new version of itunes it won't change from g drive to f drive when I click the button to change.  It just says g drive is unavailable to download itunes which I already aware of but it won't let me browse and find the right drive my external drive is on.  It won't configure or anything what do I do?

Change the drive letter back to G:

    Hi Akshay,
If you want your images to appear standalone with no other page item on the page, then you can insert Page break on an image.
This is how you can specify a page break:
    1. Select the image
    2. Goto Object->Object Export Options
    3. Select EPUB and HTML tab
    4. Select Custom Layout check box and then check Insert Page break. You can select from the option in the dropdown-Before Image, After Image, Before and After Image as per your requirement.
    Regarding your question about images:
You export your graphs as JPEG but are those JPEGs of good resolution? If they are, then InDesign is doing something wrong during export but if the JPEGs are not of good quality then it is not an export issue. Please provide some more details here.
    Regards,
    Pooja

  • Editing from Boot Drive?? Apple says yes.

In dealing with Final Cut Pro X's Pro Apps team I was told something by TWO different Pro Apps people I find troubling. They each stated that you should ALWAYS edit fotage (meaning keep your projects and events) on the INTERNAL BOOT DRIVE. This would provide the best performance and is how FCP X is designed to work. I am not kidding or misunderstanding. I even clarified this to make sure we are clear between a second internal drive and the actual boot drive handling the OS. I was told "in the new 64 bit architecture, FCP X is designed to edit from the same drive the OS is on, the only issue is storage space". It was then reiterated that this is the best way to use FCP X. I even explained that if I was using some kind of consumer level format, I could see doing this, and explained I shoot in AVCCAM 1080p. Apparently what format you use does not matter either, it is designed to handle anything I was assured. So, my 3  year old MacBook Pro will edit RAW 4K footage from the boot drive? I am amazed!
Sadly, the solution provided to my FCP X issue is "wipe the hard drive completely and start over." This after paying $99.00 for the Pro Apps support and talking to no less than 8 people. I am certain none of the Pro Apps folks I talked to really understood what I am even dealing with.
Their Pro Care is not what it used to be, although the person who told me this said he has been doing this for 7 years. Unbelievable.
    Comments?

I wish I could get to one of those engineers, I had an issue when FCP X first came out and eventually talked to one over the phone. All I dealt with back then seemed on their game. I just thought Apple was better than that.
I have another genius bar appt. today. Should I let them do the long hardware test? They say it could be a day or two and is much more extensive.
I would likely try to buy a new iMac before paying hundreds for a better card and trying to install myself. It seems they would  not do it at the Apple store, only replace the same card.

  • Lightroom pulls up photoshop from backup drive rather than boot drive

I am using the latest versions of Lightroom and Photoshop for Mac.
I back up each night using super duper.  In Lightroom, when I choose to Edit in Photoshop CC 2014, Lightroom loads Photoshop from my backup drive.  The only workaround I have found is to dismount my backup drive.  Is there a place I can go in either lightroom or photoshop to specify from which drive Photoshop should start when Editing from Lightroom.  If I start photoshop first, then Lightroom "finds" the correct Photoshop, but I'd like to actually solve this rather than using a workaround.  BTW, I used Adobe's instructions for uninstalling Lightroom and then re-installed, but that did not solve the problem.

    ANSWER BELOW:
I discovered a work around - super duper has a way to create custom scripts which will NOT back up items you specify.  I went to the backup drive of my main drive and deleted both photoshop CC and lightroom cc.  After running super duper using the custom script (which they explain thoroughly in the latest super duper manual) and NOT backing up either Photoshop or Lightroom (in Applications) things are back to normal.  If I need to reinstall either photoshop or lightroom, I can easily do that from the web.

  • How to add drive space from one drive to another drive in Solaris 10

This is something I have never done in Solaris. I have a mounted drive (UFS) with a dir being used for a samba share. The dir is near full. I have another drive right beside it that is empty.
    1. How can I add the drive space from the empty drive to the dir or drive that is nearly full? I have to access all files on both drives from the samba share.
    2. Can I do this without loosing files?
    3. Can I do this without messing up the samba share?
    4. Can this be done on the fly without re-boot?
    Thanks in advance.

I would start by getting acquainted with ZFS.
Make sure you have a recent Solaris 10 version with a stable zfs impl. like u4 and later.
Make sure you have installed reasonably recent Solaris 10 recommended patches - they make a big difference to ZFS.
    Simple solution :
    * put your new drive in a zpool
    # zpool create smbpool <new_drive_device, fx. c0t1d0>
    * make a zfs
    # zfs create smbpool/smbfs
    * stop your samba server
    # svcadm stop smb ?
    * copy your files to your zfs fssmb_ufs=old samba fs
    # cp -rp <old_samba_fs> /pools/smbpool/smbfs
    * un-mount and say goodbye to your old samba fs - /wave
    # umount <old_samba_fs>
    * expand your zpool with the old samba server fs partition
    # zpool add smbpool <device name for old samba slice, fx. c0t0d0s6>
    * move your zfs fs to be mounted on the same mount points as the old samba server fs
    # zfs set mountpoint=<old_samba_mountpoint> smbpool/smbfs
    * restart your samba server
    # svcadm start smb ?
It requires downtime for the samba server to copy the files, which could be cut shorter by using rsync, rsyncing while samba server online, stop samba server, rsync again for the changes while the first rsync ran.

  • System folders on another drive other than boot drive

    hi, guys...
does anyone know anything about moving your folders such as "documents, photos, movies, music" to an external drive or separate partition in snow leopard?  or how this might affect Lion?
i've found some online documentation that shows you can move your entire home folder (which i don't want to do), and some documentation that you can use symbolic links (via a few terminal commands) so that the actual system folder can be moved elsewhere with an alias being the actual reference folder.
the reason i want to do this is to move my music and photo folders to a storage partition.  i add and delete so often on these that it ends up fragmenting my drive and bogs down my startup disk.  also, i'm going to move soon to an SSD as my startup drive, either 128 or 240 gb and use it only for system files and move all my data elsewhere.
but as you know, os x likes certain things in the default folders.
so i guess i'm looking for anyone's thoughts on this.
oh, and i do have a question.  if i can use a symbolic link and have the actual data reside elsewhere, if i do a time machine backup and it's backing up all my system and user folders, will it backup the data that resides elsewhere, or would i have to actually back up separately from the other location where the music and photos reside?
is this making any sense to anyone?

makes a lot of sense.  I am looking for an answer myself.  My documents folder long ago outgrew it's place on the boot drive.  It would be nice to keep it in the user folder organized on another disc

  • Install Safari to a different hard drive, not the boot drive, on a Windows PC

I have a dual drive laptop.  The boot drive is a small SSD and the 2nd drive is a large SATA drive.  I would like to install as many programs as possible to the SATA drive.  When I installed Safari, it didn't give me a choice as to where to install it.  Is there a way to do it?

I have a computer with 2 hard drives on it. I had my music on hard drive C and i had to move the music to hard drive D, but now itunes cant read the music files so all the "!" show up next to the songs. How do i get itunes to read my music files from hard drive D now???
Just point iTunes to use new location of the library.
If you have moved the whole iTunes folder that will do the trick. After pointing iTunes to the new location, choose "File -> Library -> Organize Library" to force iTunes to rebuild the database.
If you had moved only the music files to the new location, iTunes have to build up a new database (library).
If you did so, point iTunes to a empty folder on the new drive. Best name it iTunes.
Then drag the musik (whole folder) just to the iTunes main window or use "File -> Add to library" and point to the music folder.
After all is done, delete the source folder.

  • Install 10.6 New Drive Migrate from Original Drive

I have a Mac Pro running 10.5.8 on it's factory original drive. What I'd like to do is install 10.6 on a new drive and migrate my account with all settings and apps to that new drive. Both drives are installed internally on the Mac Pro ready to go, Leopard Install disk at hand and waiting.

A much better step would be to
1: Clone the existing 10.5 to a Disk Utility HFS+ journaled formatted external drive using the free Carbon Copy Cloner
2: Hold option and boot from the clone, check it out. Disconnect.
3: Upgrade 10.5 to 10.6 on the orignal drive using the 10.6 upgrade disk, see how everything works (if not you can hold option and boot from the 10.5 clone and even reverse clone if necessary)
4: If the 10.6 upgrade went well, then clone that to the new larger drive (formatted HFS+ journaled first of course)
The reason for this is you avoid ANY issue with using Setup or Migration Assistant, which isn't exaclty perfect or even close.
You also get a external clone as a backup.
If your thinking, "I'm going to install 10.6 so it's fresh" all that goes to HELLO when you use Setup or Migration Assistant, you migrate all the crap from 10.5
If you really want a fresh install of 10.6, you need to do 10.5 install first so you get your free iLife, then upgrade to 10.6, then install programs from original sources, finally just copy the files from the 10.5 drive.
If your doing what your doing to optimize/defrag the drive, cloning back and forth does that as CCC copies folders/files alphabetically via the root directory.
