Mac OS X 10.6 Help
If you have trouble inserting a CD or DVD
If you can’t insert a CD or DVD, or if the disc is ejected after you insert it, there are several things you can try.
Try these suggestions:
Clean the disc. The drive may eject a disc if it’s dirty.
To clean a CD or DVD, wipe the shiny surface with a soft, damp cloth, working from center to edge.
Check the surface of the disc for scratches. If it’s scratched, it may be unreadable.
Try using the disc in another drive to see if the disc can be read.
Try to insert another disc in the drive. If you can insert other discs, the disc you originally tried to insert may be damaged.
Check whether the optical drive is plugged in and turned on. Refer to the documentation that came with the drive for more information.
If you’re using a MacBook Air SuperDrive, connect it directly to a MacBook Air. It won’t work correctly if it’s connected to any computer other than a MacBook Air, or if it’s connected to a hub.
When handling discs, be careful not to leave fingerprints, place other materials on the discs, or add labels to the discs that may cause them to become unbalanced when spinning. Don’t write on the shiny side of the disc. Instead, write on the side that has a label or other text.

  • Impossible tu burn an idvd project . All dvd is ejected.

I made a project with Final Cut Express, imported it in iDvd as I always do. All dvds are ejected and the only message I get : Insert a dvd.

Try this workflow to see if it makes a difference:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the  File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

    Cricket,
your iMac is years newer than the ones this forum covers and has a different optical drive. You would be best served by starting a new thread in teh forums for the Intel iMacs here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=189
Make a new post; tagging onto an existing one dilutes the help both you and the original poster can get. If you are having trouble figuring out how to start a new thread, please refer to this article:

If the computer is new, you should take it in so the problem is documented by Apple as soon as possible.

  • DVD gets ejected automatically

When I insert a commercial DVD or a burned DVD. It get ejected after 2 seconds. I used to be able to watch DVDs but now I can't. Could you please help.
    Thanks

Hmm. Ordinarily I'd suggest putting in a lens-cleaning CD, but it sounds like there may be some mechanical problem if no CD/DVDs at all play. Have you tried booting off a CD/DVD? (If you could do that, then it may be a software/OS issue instead of a hardware issue).

  • Leopard install disc ejects automatically after a minute or so

Whenever i put in my leopard install disk, it simply makes some noises then ejects itself automatically after a minute or so.
I have an iMac which is about 2 years old and am currently running tiger 10.4.11
Really stuck on ideas on what to do
Even tried the whole turn it on its side trick which didnt work
Any help would be great, Cheers

I also checked if i had a dual layer dvd drive, which i do so really dont see why it wont work
The suggestion to copy the disk requires a drive that can write (burn) dual layer DVD's. Essentially all DVD drives (including all used by Apple) can read dual layer DVD's.
I got it off the internet so im not to sure if i can get a refund
What do you mean by "off the internet"? Is this a retail, Apple-branded Leopard DVD or something else? All the retail disks are black, with a large "X" that almost goes from edge to edge of the disk. Other Apple-branded Leopard disks are gray & only work with certain Macs. They are bundled with the Mac they are meant for & their labeling indicates they are not to be sold separately.
If you have been sold a gray disk, this is almost certainly your problem.

  • DVD Drive Ejects on Bootup

I have a PowerBook Pismo (Firewire and bronze keyboard). OS X 10.3.9 with all the latest secutity upgrades.
When the machine starts up, the DVD drive ejects whether or not there is a disk in it.
This makes it difficult to boot from the install CD to run Disk Utility.
Has anyone had this problem? Are ther any know fixes

    Sy B,
Disconnect all USB devices including a USB mouse, then restart...see if the drive tray still pops open. Some known troublemakers are Adesso Tru-Form keyboard, Griffin iMate USB/ADB adapter, Keyspan Twin serial, and possibly others.
Test each device individually, then see if updated software is available.

  • DVD ROMS Ejecting after start up.

    RAM: 500 Mb
Video Card: ATI Radeon 9200 SE
Operating System: Windows XP home edition
Nb. Two DVD drives connected master & slave on IDE2
I have an unusual situation. Please help. I have run out of ideas.
    Dilemma
    1. I boot up my system.
    2. I click to enter my desktop environment (3 other users share this PC).
    3. My system starts to load my processes.
    4. While loading the processes my DVD drive door(s) shoots out in the open position. Sometimes both shoot out together and sometimes only one.
    5. If I go into my windows explorer, I notice that the drive letters for the two drives are missing. I then have to reload them by using “my computer” management area. If I do not do this my applications will tell me that no drive exists. I have a DVD ROM and a DVD RW.
    Other observations:
The drives never go missing in device manager. The drives only go missing in windows explorer if the DVD doors open. Sometime the doors may stay shut and everything is well. Sometimes the problem is frequent and sometimes it seems to have gone away.
    Been there done that:
    1.   I unloaded all DVD burner software
    2.   I changed the IDE ribbon cable
    3.   I unloaded the CD/DVD drivers and rebooted
    4.   I disconnected one DVD at a time and rebooted.
    5.   I checked for viruses using Norton 2005 (with latest definitions)
    6.   I checked my application/disc integrity using Norton Win Doctor
    7.    I Joined this forum for help

    Update:
    10.   I swapped around the cables going to the IDE ports on the motherboard. Switched ROMS to IDE 1 and switched HD to IDE 2
    11.   I dismounted the virtual drive in CD Anywhere manager.
Problem disappears after I “only” completely remove cd Anywhere:
I completely removed the cd Anywhere software. Also using cdacleaner.exe and removing the registry entries as instructed by the supplier. The problem did not return.
    Stop the clock –solution found.
I have an application called CD Anywhere that starts up at the beginning of loading. Only after I disabled this process that the problem with the DVD drives ejecting was resolved. I contacted the supplier about the problem and they furnished me with a fix, so far so good, everything is working fine. If you are wondering what CD Anywhere is, it’s a virtual drive software for convenient loading of  CD images without the hassle of physically loading the original cd. Its supplied by a company called Vcom.

  • Optical DVD drive ejects any inserted disc and does not work!

I can not read or write certain DVDs in my Mid-2009 MacBook Pro since upgrading to Mountain Lion.
I insert an empty DVD-R (Verbatim) and it is being ejected. I insert a recorded DVD-R (Verbatim) and it is being ejected.
I have tried a commercial Video DVD - (Sony) and that one actually did work ... so I am pretty clueless - I can not write any DVD right now.
In the forum I have found many posts regarding this issue under Lion already.
However, my drive used to work fine under Lion and I was able to watch / record DVDs etc.
Now, it is no longer working and I can not use it. Does anyone know how to solve this?
So far I have found the following hints (which did not work for me):
ALL OF THESE THINGS DID NOT WORK:
    1) Reset the PRAM (https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379)
    2) Uninstall all virtual machines (Virtual Box, etc.)
    3) SMC Reset (https://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964)
some people talk about it being an issue with the 64 bit kernel and that you should try to reboot into 32bit (holding down 32 on startup)
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT3770
others blame it on the UDF format (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3413998)
There are too many articles in the forums about this - more to make this a random issue.
The most disturbing thing to me is that multiple of the people in these threads contacted Apple and in the end where told, it's probably a bug... now why is this - obviously critical bug - not being resolved, yet ?

the list could probably be continued, but I'll leave it at this

I also had the same problem shortly after upgrading. My optical DVD drive ejects any disk I put in. This started about 2 months ago.
I just got back from the Apple store, after setting up an appointment, and they told me that my life is horrible because my MacBook Pro is no longer under warranty as of 32 days ago. This is really BS.
However just like any other company that treats me with poor customer service I just take my future business elsewhere and make sure not to recommend them to any friends and family - as well as tell them about my horrid experience.

  • Disk drive ejects automatically

My CD drives is getting ejected automatically since I have refreshed it. Initially it ejects on booting, but problem has been sorted out somehow, but now, it ejects while working.
    I'm using G6-2202 TX with Win8.

How common is it for the lens to get dusty and not read a particular DVD? I have two new DVD movies that are not even recognized on my PowerBook, and get spit out after a minute of cycling. Every other DVD works fine. I even returned one of the non-recognized DVDs and exchanged it for another of the same title, and guess what, it does not play either.
I tried these two problem DVDs in my G4 desktop last night, and they both worked just fine in that older drive. Unfortunately, and unrelated, my four year old Quicksilver desktop died overnight after the successful movie screenings.
Are some newish Region 1 NTSC DVDs different somehow (what is DVD9?)? Or is it most likely a dirty lens needing service, as you suggest?

  • DVD tray ejects on reboot. Cannot complete install.

This is a recurring problem. Whenever I reboot my system, the DVD tray ejects, so when SL goes to reboot, it pops the DVD out and just boots up on the old system. I've tried holding down "C" during reboot. I've repaired permissions. I've unplugged all peripherals.
Any more suggestions from the room?

I'm sure you have your reasons for running AV software so I won't give you the standard speech on that topic.
Ha! The only reason is a not-good one: the machine in question is my uni's, and my IT folks insist, however unnecessary (and problematic!) I tell them it is. They're mostly Windows folks, so they're prone to virus-paranoia.
I haven't yet told them that I've upgraded to SL -- I didn't exactly ask for permission -- and I certainly haven't mentioned that I've uninstalled the AV software!

  • DVD player opens automatically when starting computer

When I start up my macbook pro OS X version 10.6.8 the DVD player opens up automatically. This is something new and started recently after we had some difficulty playing/ejecting a DVD that ejected when we restarted the computer. Can someone please offer some help

Thankyou for your reply. I tried your first suggestion, but the DVD player didn't show up in Login Options. I didn't try to close the window and restart because everytime I start the computer and the DVD player opens, I automatically close the app because it's so annoying.
But your suggestions did prompt me to go to dock and right click on the DVD player app and I noticed that when I clicked on options, there was a tick beside "Open at Login". I wasn't even aware that you could right click on the app and that option and others were there. So I just unticked it and I'm sure the problem will be solved.
    So thankyou

  • Dvd auto eject but cd works

Hi, today i have tried to install iLife from the dvd but when i tried to insert it, dvd has been automatically ejected around 30 second after.
So i tried other DVDs (mac install dvd, movies, ecc.) but with the same thing happened.
When i insert a music CD it works fine.
I also tried to boot from install dvd but it hasn't recognized.

First, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop for now...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.
Have you done a PRAM reset, CMD+Option+p+r...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
In fact, do 3 in a row, takes a bit of time.
To find out if it's system wide or user specific, try this...
Open System Preferences>Users & Groups, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new admin account, log out & into the new account.
Does it work in the new account?

If you don't have a SuperDrive you will not be able to burn DVDs.
Did iDVD come preinstalled on your Mac?  If it did then you should have a SuperDrive and be able to burn DVDS. Check the Disk Burning section of System Information

  • CD/DVD drive does not read all DVD formats and regions

    Hi
My Teac-dw-224e-a does not read all DVDs formats and regions.
It does read CDs but no DVDs at all.
Not DVD-R and not even regular DVDs. I have checked the region of the DVD.
I have reinstalled the driver and also tried with different software.
    What can I do?
    Please help!

    Hi
It is possible that your DVD drive has wrong region settings.
In this case it is not able to watch all possible DVD movies from different regions.
Of course you can change the settings 4 times. But after this changing the settings are fixed and its not possible to change it anymore.
