All events and albums are gone from iPhoto

My library is still in the same location and still 540GB big, but when I open it there is nothing in iPhoto.

My library is still in the same location and still 540GB big, but when I open it there is nothing in iPhoto.
What has changed?  Did you just update or upgrade iPhoto to the new version 9.6, to be compatible with Yosemite?
Is iPhoto opening the correct library? Ctrl-click the word "iPhoto" in the title bar of the main iPhoto window. The drop-down menu will show you, which iPhoto library is currently open.
If the correct library is open, but looking empty, select the iPhoto Library in the Finder and look inside by ctrl-clicking it and using the command "Show Package Contents". Are there photos in the folder "Masters", or is there a folder "Old Masters"?

    HELP PLEASE
no I do not have a bckup

What size if the Library as indicated in the Finder?  If it's large enough to be holding your photos then your photos are probably still in there but the library is damaged.  If the tags you used indicate iLife 11 then try the following:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button,
navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.
If the above falils to recover your photos continue with this:
Starting over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1. Open the library package like this.
    2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    3. Drag the subfolders of the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window a few at a time.
This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
Note:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • All of my pictures are gone from iPhoto after installing Yosemite..how do i get them back?

I have tried everything to get my pictures back after installing Yosemite on my laptop. Are they gone? Or is there a way to retrieve them?

Define "everything" because if you've tried everything then your last recourse is:
1 - restore your backup copy of your iPhoto Library created just prior to your Yosemite upgrade or
2 - Starting over from scratch with new library

  • When I did the upgrade it resulted in a factory reset. Now all of my ringtones are gone from iTunes. Anyone have a solution?

When I did the upgrade it resulted in me having to do a factory reset because it was pausing for long periods of time. It went through the backup and all other steps but now all of my ringtones are gone from iTunes, thus the phone. I tried to redownload one I had purchased and it made me purchase it again (I did this as a test), and it said I had purchased it before but still required me to purchase again.
    Anyone have a solution/thoughts/help?

Command + Z undoes the last action you did, did you just move those files into that folder?
Use Spotlight to search for the files, or look for them in their original location(s).

  • All my old photos are missing from iPhoto on my Mac- any one have ideas on how to retrieve?

All my old photos are missing from iPhoto on my Mac- any one have ideas on how to retrieve?

Do you have a Time Machine backup or any backup of your Mac? Then you could try to restore from the backup.
If your photos are very important documents, you could also try data recovery software. Usually the trial versions are free, but if you want to safe the recovery photos you have to pay.  Disk Drill works well to recover jPEG photos, see:  http://www.cleverfiles.com/
It is still not obvious what might have happened to your iPhoto Library.  Have you searched for different iPhoto Libraries?
You can search everywhere with FindAnyFile, where Spotlight will not search.
I learned this  from Old Toad , see his post here:
Re: My iPhoto Library disappeared...how do I get it back?
Download and run Find Any File to search for a file with "ThumbJPGSegment" in the file name. These are files common to all versions of  iPhoto libraries.
FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages. If there's a library hiding somewhere on your hard drive FAF will find it.

  • I burned iPhoto to a folder and now my folders/albums are gone in iPhoto

I decided to burn a folder of all my photos in iPhoto as I was having a problem with iPhoto creating new, untitled subfolders everytime I put photo's in a folder. I thought that I should back everything up and then take the next step to reloading iPhoto. I have had a problem with iPhoto since I bought my computer and took it into the genius bar twice and they they remotely came into my computer. It seemed to stump all of them, although the remote session was the best help. Since I have over 32,000 photos, I think it is time to find out what is really going on with this particular iPhoto. I have been using iPhoto for a very long time on previous computers and never had a problem. I need help before I regret doing something I can't reverse.

I am asking what happened to my folders and albums after backing up my photos by burning a folder to my desktop.
Part of the problem is confusing use of language - since we only have words to communicate with it is critical to use the correct words properly
In iPhoto are you speaking of folders and albums in the source pane on the left? Those are for organizing and are not places but albums are ways of viewing yoru photos and folders are ways of organizing your albums
Not sure what you mean by "burning a folder on the desktop? You "burn" CDs and DVDs - you "export" photos to finder folders on the desktop - is this what you did?
Then exactly what did you do next?
    This makes no sense
Just went back to iPhoto and all of the albums and folders are gone. All the photos are present.
Exporting photos does nothing to a finder folder does absolutely nothing to the source photos within iPhoto
And export (if htat is what you did) is not a way to backup iPhoto - it does backup your photos but not yourorganization
So to help it is critical to know exactly what you did do
And do you have a good current backup of the iPhoto library - you may very well need to use it

  • Pictures are gone from iPhoto

All of my pictures seem to be gone from iPhoto. I can see them as an icon when go to "open" in PhotoShop, but iPhoto has nothing in its library.

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • HELP! Recovered iphotolibrary lost ALL events and albums?!

Without a clear reason and absolutely no warning, iPhoto (on my brand new MacBookPro with all current updates etc.) suddenly showed '0' photos in my <80t photo library. After the itinial panic I was able to 'recover' the photos with 'recover library' option by Option+open. To my shock the entire photo library has been 'recovered' in a single 'recovered photos' event. Total catastrophe.. Could someone please have an idea how to get iPhoto to find the previous event and album hierarch? Grateful for ANY tips out there. Thank you!!

You can try rebuild with iPhoto Library Manager
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
If that doesn't help then there is no fix, I'm afraid.

  • All history and bookmarks are gone, WTF ?

my bookmarks and history are gone. Where are they ?

If you used a remove personal settings option from Windows or Firefox, you may well have permanently lost those bookmarks.
    * Undelete<br>If you did that then timely use of a file undelete utility and a good helping of luck are likely to be required to attempt recovery (probably best to stop using
the computer entirely, until you have such utility).
*Your Own Backups<br>You could have a backup system in place that backs up such files or the firefox profile, and you may be able to use that.
    * Synced to another machine<br> you may have the bookmarks synced on another machine, or even on an external server
    **see [[what is firefox sync?]]
See also [[lost bookmarks]] but I am not sure any of that applies in this case, it is worth reading it though

  • All my photo's are missing from iPhoto and I'm getting a message "your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable"

Yesterday when I opened iPhoto all of my photo's were missing.  After many hours of frustrating time looking how to resolve, I decided to try again this morning.  When I tried to open iphoto, I got the message I referenced above regarding the library is either in use or has become unreadable.
My photos are not in iPhoto anymore.  There's nothing there.  iphoto acts like its never even been set up.    I have iPhoto '11 version 9.4.3. I have OS X Lion version 10.7.5.  However, when I go to "All My Files" and then under "images", there are over 10,000 images.  I see my photos (I guess it's all of them - i have no idea how many there were) and other "images" also.  When i go to "pictures" I only see the 15 or so items I have scanned.  In "iPhoto Library", there is 1 picture of what looks like a deck of playing cards with flowers on them - I don't know where that came from.  But also in "iPhoto Library"  under the heading "desktop", it shows a size of over 27GB and under "kind" it says "package".  Still under desktop and "Photo Booth Library" it shows 53GB and under "kind" it says "Photo Booth Library".  Before I opened iPhoto to view my photo's, I went to "empty trash" yesterday (not in iPhoto) and it showed over 65,000 items to delete.  There were no more than 200 that I could actually see.  So, I don't understand.  I let it delete a couple of thousand before I stopped it because I didn't know what it was doing.  I know - not too smart.  I don't know if that has anything to do with iPhoto or not; I'm just throwing that out there.  Today I went to "empty trash" and it now shows the 200 items that I can see in there.  Don't know what happened.
I do have a time capsule but not sure if I’m using it correctly. If you were to tell me to restore to a certain point, I’d have to be walked thru the process.
I downloaded “iPhoto Library Manager”, not exactly sure how to use it, but got a message basically saying the library nor the database could be loaded and that album data file for the library “iPhoto Library” could not be read.
I’ve spent hours and hours and hours searching the web for answers but I’m scared to do much of anything thinking I could end up losing all my photos if I haven’t already.
    Please help!
    Thank you!
    James

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start
with Option #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Many events and photos are missing from my iphoto.  I have time machine and would like to restore without creating duplicates. The issue is although my photos are presently blank time machine/iphoto does see the file so importing them will create duplicat

For some unknown reason, events and photos in my Iphoto are appearing blank. The photos have a title / placeholder but no picture. I use time machine and have back ups, my goal is to restore the photos without creating duplicates. Unfortunately iphoto sees the blank photos as if the picture exists?  Help

If you want to use your back up you need to restore then entire Library from Time Machine, and then replace the damaged Library with it.
