All fonts look awful

New Mac Mini. Mac OS X Leopardo di Snowio latest update.
Using 1080p, on a 1080p monitor.
*All fonts look awful*
System font (top bar, finder, everywhere) Safari as well. Everything.
Fonts look pixelated.
Didn't do any font change myself (removed nothing).
Is it due to the install of Final cut xpress / Aperture ?
Could it be the install of a Brother Laser printer?
Thanks for your help.
NB All graphics at the bottom / everywhere look perfect. Only fonts is the problem.

I think your font smoothing may be messed up a bit. That happened to some people when when upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard. From the picture you posted, it appears the fonts are a bit more jagged than they should be. Here are the instructions I copied from another Mac Web site a long time ago. They aren't mine but I have used them successfully.
If you’ve got an LCD panel that you think looks worse than it did before upgrading to 10.6, you can try this fix to see if it makes things better. How? Just open Terminal (in Applications -> Utilities) and paste this command, then press Return:
defaults -currentHost write -globalDomain AppleFontSmoothing -int 2
The 2 at the end is equivalent to the old “Medium - Best for flat panel” setting in 10.5. You can also use 1 for light smoothing, and 3 for strong smoothing. This change will only affect newly-opened applications—anything already running will have to be restarted to see the affect of the changes. As such, you may want to experiment with a document in Text Edit, trying the three alternatives, and then after you find the one you like best, rebooting your Mac (so that it will take effect system wide).
Note that if you go back into the Appearance panel and toggle the font smoothing setting, you will override your manually-set value—so don’t do that if you value your newly-smoothed fonts.

  • Photoshop Elements 8 Mac - All fonts look jagged and pixely

    HI,
I have the problem that all fonts look jagged and pixely when using Photoshop Elements 8 on Mac OS X 10.6.3. I am using the right image size 300dpi and so forth. Interestingly enough this only happens in Photoshop. If I repeat the procedure in Pixelmator everything is normal.
I would really appreciate any suggestions.

Are you simplifying the font layer and then making it larger? Can you explain exactly, step by step, what you're doing?

  • Installed photoshop, now all fonts look strange

    Hey everyone,
I installed photoshop and now my safari pages look crazy. The font is different and smaller, everything seems slightly zoomed out, and changing setting in safari preferences hasn't changed anything.
    HELP!

Clear the font cache files from the system.
Close all running applications. From an administrator account, open the Terminal app and enter the following command:
    sudo atsutil databases -remove
This removes all font cache files. Both for the system and all user font cache files. After running the command, close Terminal and immediately restart your Mac.

  • Powerpoint presentation created on Mac looks awful on PC - I'M DESPERATE!

I am creating a Powerpoint presentation on my G-5 that will be shown tomorrow, probably on a PC.
I burned a disc tonight as a test and viewed it on a PC and all the fonts look awful.
It has coverted them to something else entirely and in the process totally messed up alignment, etc.
I may have no control over what this is shown on, so I'm trying to figure out if there is a way to embed fonts into a Powerpoint, so that whatever it is shown on, it will look right.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks.
    J.

If you want to use Powerpoint to display the presentation I don't think you have any choice but to use Windows fonts that you would expect to find on a typical PC.
Couldn't you print the presentation as a PDF and use Adobe Reader to display the slides? A PDF created on a Mac should look the same on a PC because fonts are embedded in the PDF.

  • External display's fonts are awful

Fonts look awful (blurry, hazy and jagged) on my external Dell U2412M monitor ever since I upgraded to Yosemite. Everything was dandy in Mavericks but now it's just awful. Is anyone currently facing similar issues? I have tried mirroring the display, turning off font smoothing, making sure the display is running in resolution that is best for the display - tried all sorts including turning the font smoothing down by changing AppleFontSmoothing value. Nothing helps.
Not only that it seems whatever resolution you choose when the OS boots up for the very first time it defaults to 1440x900 resolution. Is that normal? It's fine Once you login and logout...
    Cheers...

Isn't just incredible. Of late I am questioning the entire apple ecosystem. Their quality assurance aspects have taken a nose dive. Have you tried to preview an image by hitting the space bar? Seen the jittery animation? Noticed how mission control animations struggle on anything other than 1440x900 due non integer based interpolation they need to do for downscaling and upscaling... it's all just shocking... there was a time when people came into OS X because things just worked. It cannot be further from the truth. I run Linux everywhere and would not have bothered with OS X if it wasn't for Lightroom. I am pretty much waiting and hoping that 10.10.1 will address majority of these issues. If it doesn't this MacBook Pro is going straight on eBay! Goodbye Apple forever.... I just cannot imagine that on a top of the range hardware there will be so many issues because of the hideous software it runs! I don't care about 'Continuity'  - just get the basics right...
Could not have said it better myself.
Apple doesn't appear to be focusing on the desktop side as much. There are a lot of issues on the desktop side. But, then again, Apple is going for the lowest common denominator. It's supposed to be easy, and hard to shoot yourself in the foot with.  The downside is Apple has taken away our freedom. Apple has made its computers not work with non-Apple hardware; locking you in the Apple ecosystem.
If you want to tinker you have to go to homebrew or start installing from source, overwriting paths, and going through dependency ****.
The plus side, is, it's still hard to shoot yourself in the foot. I just updated my ubuntu server's XML parsing library, overwriting the standard libxml parser and now I can't update my ubuntu server. Oh well, i won't make that mistake again.
But, at least with Apple I was shielded, I learned a whole lot about the underlying system, and have a system that works the way I want it to. I can still upgrade to the latest release, and, the web cam works as does the wifi. I have a dual booted windows/ubuntu laptop which the webcam works on neither OS, nor does the SD card reader.

  • Fonts look bad in OSX jagged text

    Hello
I thought apple gave us font smoothing in OSX! My fonts look terrible in QuarkXpress6.0. Is this what I have to look forward to? I miss my ATM.
I did the "font smoothing thing" in appearence-no change.
Also will all my older fonts from when I used OS 7 +8, will these still work in OSX? and by Quark XPress?
    Please enlighten me!
all fonts look bad; Goudy old style, bellvue etc. (postscript type 1)
    imac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   21" screen

if I zoom out in Quark to view document at say 125% the 45 pt type really looks bad
Hmm. I'm unable to duplicate your problem. I've pasted some random text into Quark, sized it to 45 pt and set the zoom to 125%. No matter if I go up or down, the fonts look very smooth with both Goudy Old Style and News Gothic (I have the Adobe version, not MT, which is from MonoType). Well, if I look real close, I can see a little bit of jaggies around curves. But nothing very noticable.
Is your 21" monitor a CRT or LCD? LCD always produce the best image when used at their native resolution. A CRT's best display varies depending on whether it has a shadow mask or aperture grill tube. If your monitor has an independent control for sharpening, it may be too high.
I have some fonts installed that I don't know where they came from ex: News Gothic MT (Microsoft I think) Will these view and print okay in any program?
As long as it's a standard Mac suitcase style TrueType font, or a complete and proper Type 1 PostScript font, it should just as well as any other.
I keep all my fonts in classic folder and manage w/font book (thats another story) It seems that my classic apps, Illustrator, see most of the fonts all the time eventhough I turned many off in fontbook. Also illustrator doesn't see ALL the fonts.
That's a handful. When it comes to Classic, the rules are a little different. Fonts you manually place into the OS 9 Fonts folder, or are put there by the OS when activating them from Font Book with OS 9 as the choice to be activated for, fonts are then available to both Classic and OS X.
If you deactivate them in Font Book, the fonts will become unavailable to OS X apps. However, any Classic apps will continue to see them until you shut down all OS 9 applications and Classic. In other words, once you open fonts for Classic, they can't be closed to Classic without shutting the entire environment down. Confused yet?
As far as Illustrator not seeing all the fonts, that relates to this part of your question:
Please explain the limitations of classic apps and fonts.
Classic can use any fonts that were in existence for the Mac before OS X. All of your older Mac TrueType and Type 1 PostScript fonts will work in OS X and Classic. Fonts that will work as is in OS X that you couldn't use before on a Mac are PC TrueType fonts. If you have copied any of the OS X .dfonts into the OS 9 Fonts folder, those will not work. A .dfont is a variation of a TrueType font, with the data in the data fork rather than the resource fork as they are with the older Mac TrueType fonts. Neither OS 9 or any Classic apps can read these fonts. Those are likely the ones not showing up in Illustrator.
It sounds like you do a lot of work with fonts. While Apple has improved Font Book quite a bit in Tiger, it's still very much a consumer font manager for those who handle fonts only occasionally. You'd be much better off using a font manager such as Suitcase X1 or Font Agent Pro.

  • Why do my TrueType fonts (from CS5 Contents/Goodies/Fonts folder) look awful?

I recently installed the fonts that ship with CS5 Web Premium. These are located in Content dvd in the Goodies>Fonts folder. the Open Type fonts look fine but all True Type fonts are pixelated...like the font isn't really there?  Can anyone advise?

Actually those fonts do ship with some versions of the Creative Suite. They are absolutely not for any print-oriented production. And yes, they look like that.
Actually, Adobe has produced a number of TrueType fonts. There are a series of "web pro" TrueType fonts produced over the years and still available. See http://store1.adobe.com/cfusion/store/html/index.cfm?store=OLS-US&event=displayFontPackage &code=1507.

  • When publishing to a folder page looks awful once uploaded. Can anyone help

    Hi,
I've read through at least 30 pages on this forum and seem to be unable to find something to help me remedy my problem.
I made a really simple site in iWEB. When I publish to a folder and click the "visit this site now" button, everything looks perfect. However, once I upload the site, using Fetch, the site looks awful. The Arial font is replaced by something else. The "made on a mac" image disappears. The navbar is non existent, and none of my other pages display properly (when I manually enter there addresses).
I read a previous post about changing my Fetch settings so that data uploads in binary (raw) form and did that. I tried changing text-encoding in my browser to UTF-8, but that did not help either.
I've cleared the folder on my home computer a number of times and tried republishing and re-uploading and that does not help. I've tried viewing the page in Safari, Mozilla, and Explorer, and it looks terrible in all 3. The site is:
    http://web.syr.edu/~ljames
If someone can help me I'd greatly appreciate it. If you need any further info from me, please let me know and I'll do what I can to assist. Thanks.

You have changed the permissions (or they are incorrect) on your home_files directory. I get a forbidden message when trying to access that directory. The sylesheet (css) and other files there dictate how the home page is diplayed. Make sure that all the permissions on the directories for your site are set correctly.

  • My Dell U2412M monitor looks awful on OS X

I bought my first Mac (Mini 2014) and attached to my Dell U2412M external monitor and the graphics looks awful, all blurry and pixelated.
For the avoidance of any doubt:
    1) Mini is connected to minitor via miniDP to DP cable
    2) Color is correctly set to RGB
    3) Resolution is on the right setting
    4) Pictures look fine, the problem is just with the font rendering, in any application
    5) Have tried turning LCD font smoothing on and off but does not really make a big difference
Any other setting I can try? Is Mac really this bad at handling fonts? I use the same monitor on a windows laptop and font is crystal clear. It is like looking at a 1024x768 screen while mine is a pretty decent 1920x1200.
    thanks

  • Text looks awful?

    Hi all,
Using FCP 10.0.6 and when importing a video that has text on it, it looks awful. The text 'shakes' and doesn't look right at all. I use avidemux to change the look of a video, and FCP to put it in HD and sharpen it. However, whenever I put the video into FCP it always has problems with the video imported that aren't on the actual file. An example of what this looks like would be:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHJeWBmVR90&list=UUkxHI9k2Ir3epaJLdcttlbg&index=5
Can be seen at 1:45 in the video. Any way to remove this, or stop it from happening? My avidemux output settings are:
    MPEG-4 AVC
    Single Pass 10000kbit/s
    MP3 (lame)
    .MP4
    Any help greatly appreciated,
    Damien.

    wotwotwot?
you have a low-quality, highly compressed source file and scales it to 'HDef'?
    that just blows-up pixel-mud, doesn't 'create quality'.
by contrary: so-called scaling-effects could degrade quality, in your example, the font creates 'sub pixel'.
probably, you're using the wrong codecs to swap btw. the two tools.
use FCPX only to add your titles and 'changing the look'.

  • List all fonts used in the illustrator document

    Hi All,
Having searched google I can't seem to find what I am after but am hoping someone here might be able to help me.
Due to a recent issue with a designer using a font that wasn't part of the brand guidelines for a particular company we would now like to list all fonts that are used in the illustrator file in a media panel on the document when it is sent for both internal and external approval.
I know that I can go to find font, save the list, open the document and then copy and paste that list in to a text box in Illustrator, however this is quite time consuming and a bit of a faff.
What I would like to know is:
    1. Does such a plug in exist that will create a text box in illustrator and just list all the fonts automatically, ideally updating whenever fonts are changed?
    2. If not does anyone have a script that I can run that will do the same thing and just drop a list of all fonts currently live in the document in to a text box?
I will have the same issue when working with Indesign documents to so if anyone one know the answers to the above but all related to indesign that would also be great!
    Thanks everyone!

I thought about AdjustObjectAIColors, and its a good way to get a bunch of them but I'm not 100% sure if it covers all colours or just those found in paths. If not, this would exclude colours on effects & overlays for symbols, found in kPluginArt (though there is a similar function for plugin art specifically) and I imagine text. Probably a few other types if we look hard enough. Granted, paths are probably 90% of colours :-) I also wondered (sinc I haven't tried it before) how comprehensive that method is -- does it hit all the colours in various effects & styles layered on path? Or does it just hit the standard stroke & fill? I assume not, but I don't know.

well, when I export from indesign to pdf , i got the choice between "interactive" or "print", I chose interactive, and there's no way to set up anything else appart from   pages (all/specify) etc.etc.
