Gang,
After five years, my iMac and my iPhone are just about done. I lost my iMac to a logic board and my iPhone well it is the original and it's on its death bed.
My questions: I will need a new phone first as I have to save up funds for a new Mac. All of my "stuff" from my old iMac is now sitting on an external hard drive. When I purchase a new iPhone, how do I get it all synced up and ready to go without a "home" computer? Is this possible or do I have to basically begin from scratch with the new iPhone?
Secondly, and this might be a stupid question but I will ask anyway. Is there any reason I shouldn't buy the 4? I've had some people say to stick with the 3GS as the 4 is still working out its issues. My personal opinion is to go with the 4 but I thought I'd at least ask...
Any information would be greatly appreciated! I can do without a computer for a while, but I need to get the phone issue squared away.

You have to use a computer to activate the phone. I believe Apple stores can do the activation for you, but I'm not sure if AT&T stores can as well.
As for your personal data, if you can borrow a friend's Mac, temporarily set up an account on it and point iTunes to your external hard drive, you could get your old iPhone backed up and the new one restored from the backup. Otherwise, you'll have to wait till you have a new machine.
Apps can be redownloaded for free, but music cannot.

In your blog you accept you don't have an on-site service agreement. Its been a wonderful run with Verizon Wireless, but all good things always come to an end :[

Dear Verizon,
I'm not sure if anyone would ever read this, but we've been a Verizon Wireless customer for over 10 years... I remember back in the day, my friends would have their phones from Cingular, T-Mobile, or Sprint and they'd always complain about their service coverage. With my head held high, I'd often let them use my old LG flip phone with "switchable" front/rear camera. It wasn't nearly until 6 years later I entered the era of data munching smart phones. Granted back then we had Verizon's unlimited data plan, and I loved it! I'd sit and watch youtube videos and tap at my phone screen for hours in a day. But all good things come to an end, Verizon started to end their unlimited contract, while our family held strongly to ours for another year or two; the ultimatum was given. Either keep our grandfathered data plan and never be able to upgrade our phones. Or be able to upgrade, but lose our data plan... Sadly we were assured by countless representatives that the average users rarely exceeded 2 GBs in a month, and thus our family agreed to let our existing plan go for the newer 'shared' tiered data system. It has been our greatest regret with Verizon, and for the last year or two we've been constantly keeping tabs of what we viewed on our nicest phones, how long we video chatted with friends. It feels that my phone hasn't been used the same ever since, and I frankly hate it. We've been using over our monthly limit for months in a row. In our family we share 20 GBs a month, but for the last couple months we had to extend it to the 30 GB a month plan, and the price is so unjustified.
I'm sad to say, that I'm no longer proud of Verizon's services anymore, it's been a great run. And its strange that those same friends that used to go to me when their phones no longer have data, it seems that I end up asking them to view content more than I should to preserve what precious data I have left...

The great thing about humans is we have something called choice.
To keep unlimited data or to get a subsidize device at 1/4 the cost of paying full price at $700 or more.
You could have paid full price and kept unlimited data. But you did not. Even though by paying higher for data overages each month would have been better spent on buying the phone outright.
You could have now bought tge phone on the 12 month payment plan and also kept unlimited data. (not syre how long ago you got the new devices, I think it was before the new payment plan came into affect)
Again it is something that was your choice. You really cannot blame Verizon for business decisions. Most other carriers are going the way of full device payment via different offerings, Companies like Sprint and T-Mobile have unlimited data and lower monthly costs but their build outs are not usually as large as Verizons coverage. Again its a choice, you have to either go to one of the other carriers for their offerings or stay with Verizon and choose what is more important to you.

My new iPod has now crashed and is unusable after updating it. Don't update. I just lost the only good thing I have because of them pushing me into it.

My new iPod has been updated. I was pushed into it. So then I thought "it could use one it could improve it". I read as much as the terms and conditions as I could read that was understandable. And now it's been less then two days and my iPod is now practically useless. Don't update your iPod. It was the only good thing I had. I pleded and pleded to my parents for weeks and save up for weeks to get one. And now it's not even a year old and I've lost it. I can't afford to get a new one. And I can't afford to loose this one. i worked hard every day all day For months to be able to even get a quarter of what i needed. And my parents agreed to pay for the rest and it was my Christmas present. i was extremely happy. It's the best thing that I have and I've lost it because of an update Apple pushed me into. Now they won't help me.
my iPod is freezing every 5-10 minutes for long periods of time. It is:
freezing
the keyboard board is lacking severely
lags through out ipod
i cannot play games as it lags then freezes.
my screen is pressing where I don't press it.
it becomes very excruciatingly slow
I Cannot write to fast or it freezes and i have to re start
Im not getting told when I have notifications (such as emails)
i cannot use facebook, games, Safari. Email, messenger and a few others with out my iPod crashing.

it can take up to 10 minutes for my camera to work. It usually takes 1 minute or more.

it freezes on panorama or worn take panoramas.
it has trouble even trying to get the lock screen up.
and best of all of it. I can never tell when I'm going to be screwed by Apple.

My husband and I use the same apple Id. We would like to each have our own apple id, but we do not want to lose all our information associated with the current id. One of us will keep the original. If one us creates a new apple id how will that affect the iPhone and iTunes?

That would be my suggestion. Just keep using the common one for purchases in the stores. Then each get another AppleID using a free gmail, AOL, hotmail, MS Live or whatever email account.
Delete your current iCloud account and login with the new AppleID, and logout of Messaging and then backin with the new AppleID. Now you have a shared iTunes/App store account, but completely separate, independent iCloud and iMessage accounts.

RESET DEVICE
Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the home button together until the apple logo appears (ignore the ON/OFF slider) then let both buttons go and wait for device to restart (no data will be lost).

I'm a front-end developer, so these requests are more or less specific to my job.
Selecting an entire layer
Currently: If you do a "ctrl-click" on a layer, it selects the layer. However, if you have filters or effects applied to the layer, it does not select those.
The Problem: Since I cannot select the filters/effects, I have to zoom in on say a button with a drop shadow. I've been using png's heavily in my sites these days, and I want the drop shadow to be on a transparent background. It's difficult to zoom in and find the end of the drop shadow. You can change the transparency grid colors to help out, but it's still difficult and more importantly tedious and time consuming.
What I want: I would like the ability to select everything on a layer by doing a "shift-ctrl-click" or something. That way if I make a button with a drop shadow, I can select the button and the filters/effects that are applied to it. This would also give me the correct size of the layer as well, which is helpful information to me during html/css layout.
Organizing Groups/Layers
Currently: You can create groups from layers, or create a group then drag the layer into the group.
The Problem: When a PSD starts to get alot of layer/groups, it gets difficult to organize. If I create a new layer, or duplicate a layer group, my next step is to drag that group or layer into the proper group. My PSDs get very long, especially on homepage comps. I have to scroll up and down in the layers window to hunt for my group. Once I find the group I have to drag my new layers into it. This is annoying and clumsy.
What I want: I want to simply right-click on any layer, group, selected layers, or linked layers and in the right click menu, there should be a "send to" option. The send to should have a tree of the current groups. Then just choose the group you want and the layers/groups etc move there.
This will save me alot of time especially since my designers are lazy and don't organize things properly.
Copying layers/groups to other documents
Currently: To copy a layer/group from one file to another you have to take your files out of tab mode, then select, click and drag the layers/groups from one document to another.
The Problem: I really enjoy tab mode, and it seems pointless to have to drag the layers/groups from one file to another. There needs to be more ways to accomplish this.
What I want: I want to stay in tab mode, select my layers/groups and drag them to the tab I want to copy them to. So if I select a button, I should be able to simply drag it to another open file tab and it should copy those layers/groups to that file. Or another option would be to right click on the selected layers/group and do a have a "copy to" option where you can select another open document to send the layers/groups to.

You can "send" layers & groups to another document with duplicate to the target document. Simply right-click the source layers in the Layers panel, choose Duplicate Layer...
and in Destination, select the target document. No un-docking and dragging.

"Necrobumping" can be a good thing

I just saw this thread in the "new posts" list.
I think it's a good thing that raj7095 posted the information that he did. Presumably that thread came up when searching for ways to install .deb packages on Arch. The information about dpkg in the AUR may help others who come across the same thread after a similar search in the future.
The "no necrobumping" policy has gone a bit overboard. It makes sense when someone posts questions in dead threads or solutions to extinct problems, but not when someone adds useful information which may still be relevant to anyone who finds the thread. Arch forum threads come up in many internet searches for specific questions. They're useful sources of information and many of them remain relevant for years or longer because they don't deal with anything too temporally specific (e.g.. bugs in older versions).
Note that I'm not criticizing tomk. He's just enforcing the policy as he's expected to do and most of the mods would probably have done the same thing.

A few things I would like to add:
1. The current practice and guidelines for necrobumping were inherited by the current forum moderation team. The policy was predicated by our predecessors.
2. The logic and practical application of the guideline hinges on the size of the moderation team in proportion to the size of the community, as well as the limitation of the forum software in its vanilla state.
Allowing necrobumping creates more work for the team, and would further necessitate the ability to split threads in order to fairly and effectively moderate them.
3. The community immediately and invariably reports necrobumps.
The vast majority of forum reports are to alert us, not to spam or abuse, but to necrobumps.
I realize that there is no perfect solution. However, those that believe that necrobumping can be a good thing must also realize that they are in the position of telling me what they need, whereas I am in the position of, "I'm telling you what I've got."
As far as google searches, I think it is a bit unfair to bring that into the conversation. Whichever results are yielded from a google or forum search, it is ultimately the human being who must discriminate amongst data to arrive at whatever is the most relevant, (and current).
In my view, the community seems to be generally in favor of the current practice, which though imperfect, seems to be working.
I am also open to further discussion, though.

Last night I went to check my emails on my ipad and noticed that all of my inboxes (gmail, yahoo and exchange) were completely empty. I logged on to each individual site on my computer and the inboxes were empty there as well, with no trace of the lost messages in any trash folders or other folders. Obviously this is completely unacceptable as I have lost hundreds of important emails. Upon searching online I found that other people have experienced the same exact thing but apple has provided no explanation. As the only device that I use to access these 3 email accounts is my ipad I feel like it must have come from there. The chance of all 3 servers malfunctioning and clearing my inboxes at exactly the same moment last night is too ridiculous to contemplate, despite being suggested by the customer service advisor that I just spoke to. And I have no other evidence that my accounts have been compromised, and they have separate usernames and passwords anyway. Has this happened to anyone else? Or can anyone provide any sort of explanation? Thank you

You're welcome. As to checking speed go to http://speedtest.net/ and it will choose the closest server for you. BTW, whatever you do, don't click on the robot icon that says "Start Scan" or MacKeeper below that. Only use the speed test in the middle that has the button BEGIN TEST on it. It will run a download speed test first and then an upload speed test. The download test will give a much faster response.

Try a reset by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.

It may be same computer but if a new, empty, library has been created then it is not the same library your device was synced with...
For general library squiffiness following an upgrade or crash the easiest thing is to restore your last backup, but I guess if it were that simple you wouldn't be here.
Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup! For example grab SyncToy 2.1, a free tool from MS. This can be used to copy your entire iTunes library (& other important data folders) onto another hard drive or network share. You can then use SyncToy periodically to synchronise or echo your library to the backup. A preview will show which files need to be updated giving you a chance to spot unexpected changes and during the run only the new or updated files will be copied saving lots of time. And if your media is all organised below the main iTunes folder then you should also be able to open the backup library on any system running the same version of iTunes regardless of drive letter or path.

I am using windows XP pro and a pretty decent computer. All software is up to date and i do no have a virus. I have even tried to disable my add-ons and plug-ins but it did not make a difference.
