All icons on desktops keep flashing

I have a 500GB transcend external hard drive. It used to work totally fine with Mac OS X Snow Leopard until a few days ago. When I plugged the hard drive in, all icons on desktop keep flashing every 3 seconds. When I open my hard drive, it disappeared automatically after the flash. I thought it might be a problem with my hard drive, but it works fine with when I plug into Windows 7. So, it must be the OS X that caused this problem. Please help!

I have not see this issue before. Did a Playbook reset help?
on Playbook press power button and both Vol + - buttons for 10 seconds to reboot it.

  • Desktop keeps flashing

While I'm working in Photoshop all other open programs rapidly flash in the background. Any ideas whats causing this.

This kind of problem is often caused by "Google Drive." If it's installed, I suggest you first check for an update. If that doesn't solve the problem, remove it according to the developer's instructions. You may need to boot in safe mode to do so. Back up all data before making any changes.
If you use Google Drive and don't want to remove it, then try deselecting the option in its preferences to "show status icons." According to reports, that may be enough to stop the Finder from crashing.
A similar cloud-data product called "Open Drive" can cause the same problem. Perhaps there are others.

  • Help! - All icons on desktop & sidebar have disappeared!

I've been sorting out some files & folders, renaming stuff, that kind of thing. But, for no apparent reason, suddenly all the icons in the folder I was looking in disappeared. Shortly afterwards, all the icons on the desktop disappeared, followed by the icons in the sidebar in the finder. - They are not deleted, I just couldn't see them.
After I accidentally nocked the computer, they came back. I repaired permissions, restarted, and everything was fine except the icons did NOT come back in the sidebar. - All that is there is Desktop, my name, and Applications. - Stuff like Library, Documents etc. have vanished. - I can get to them by going another route, but I can't get them back. (I can still see the sidebar fine).
Even when I went to the Sidebar preferences, the missing folders were not there to be ticked. I have deleted the relevant preference files (as I read in other posts), logged out, but it didn't change anything.
I have NOT installed any new stuff lately, no software updates or anything. I did download some zip files, but their source is reliable and I trust them. I was listening to a copy-protected CD earlier, but I doubt that has anything to do with it.
But the most worrying thing is, just now there were signs of the same thing happening again! - The icons in the folder I was looking in disappeared!
What should I do? - Is this a symptom of a bigger problem?
    Thanks, all help is appreciated.

Well it looks like people are either unwilling or unable to help me, but in case anyone has a similar trouble in the future, here's what I did:
I went to System Preferences > Accounts, and created another account. - I then logged into this new account, and everything was fine. So, I copied the following files from Library > Preferences and pasted them into my original account in the same place (over-writing the previous files). (You need to copy them to the Applications folder first, or somewhere that is visable on all accounts). After logging out and in again, everything was fine in the original account. (Although I had to change a few things to get things back how I like them). The files to copy are:
    com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
    com.apple.finder.plist
My only worry now is that this is just putting a temporary patch on a symptom, and that some underlying problem still remains, ready to rear its ugly head at any opportunity. - Only time will tell I guess. In the mean time, everything is as it should be, and nothing seems to have been permanently lost.

  • Desktop screen keeps flashing black and dock has disappeared. iMAC X Yosemite 10.10.1

Recently I updated my iMac to OS X Yosemite 10.10.1. All was operating smoothly for a few weeks until one day i started up and logged in my dock was nowhere to be seen. The desktop screen started flashing black replacing my desktop image. None of my desktop icons disappear when this happens. screen keeps flashing black every few seconds. Also the dock has disappeared.
I have restarted in safe boot and it makes no changes.
    iMAC X Yosemite 10.10.1
    Please help!

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if Safari crashed, you would enter "Safari" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • HP Omni 27-1210xt All-In-One Desktop PC ... Missing icons

    Hello All,
I bought an HP Omni 27-1210xt All-In-One desktop PC with wireless mouse and keyboard and Windows 8 OS approximately 7 months ago.  The indicator on the mouse is now intermittenly flashing Yellow.
While researching my problem on the HP website I came across an HP Support Document that dealt with troubleshooting a wireless keyboard and mouse.
    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?prodSeriesId=4162199&objectID=c0194489...
Within this document, under the heading "Improving the performance of the wireless keyboard and mouse" it references mouse and keyboard battery-level indicator icons that reside in the notification area and to hover the mouse pointer over them to display their statuses.
I now know that "Green = a full battery, Yellow = the battery is half full and Red = it's time to change the batteries" but it would still be nice to have them available to check at a glance.
I have checked my Notification Area Icons and they are not there.  Can they be added?  And if so, how?  Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Yes! Absolutely. That is important information because with it only being 7 months old, you are still well within the one-year standard warranty that comes with all HP computers.
Now, just to warn you, I don't know if the following scenario will apply to your computer or not. Often the warranty start date can be inaccurate. This is a normal thing and it can be corrected. It happens because some computers sit on the shelf at retail store for two months, sometimes only a day. Until the day it's purchased, HP has no way of predicting what date the computer will be purchased so all warranties start on the date of manufacture.
Like I said, it is very easy to correct, so don't worry. If you call in and they say it seems you are out of warranty, just let them know what day (just a time frame) you got it. They will need a digital copy of the receipt. It is expected that most customers won't still have the receipt. It's not a big deal. Retail stores can provide you with a copy. It takes, maybe, 48 hours to get corrected. Once the warranty start date is corrected in the system, the tech support agent can create an order for mouse replacement or USB dongle replacement.
Warranty start dates being incorrect is an issue that sometimes happen when the computer is nearing the 1 year mark, so I just wanted to provide you with a little forewarning. As I said, this issue may not even apply to your computer.
If you decide to contact tech support, and receive a replacement mouse or dongle, update the thread if you get a chance on the results

    Hey sunnyday7!
Here is an article that can help you address this issue:
OS X: How to quit an unresponsive application using Force Quit

    Additional Information
OS X automatically relaunches the Finder when it is quit. If the Finder is unresponsive, use Force Quit to relaunch it. Select Finder in the Force Quit Window or Dock, then click Relaunch.

  • Icons on desktop and selections on all menus changed to AAAAAAAA

If I click on the icons the correct name of the file appears, but if I click anywhere else on the desktop the AAAAA's reappear. All of the desktop icons do this. The number of A's varies with each desktop icon. Also, all of the choices on the menu bar across the top of the screen have changed to AAAAAA. The selection choices for the items all have AAAAA. If I use the restore software cd as the start up disk, the menu bar is normal. I have done disk repair, still have the problem.
The programs and files all work correctly.
    Any ideas?

  • When installing itunes on PC with Windows Vista, the itunes program "took over" all of my desktop icons.

When installing itunes of my PC with Windows Vista, the itunes program "took over" all of my desktop icons.  How can I install it so it doesn't do that?  Thanks!

You can force Vista to rebuild the desktop icons by changing your monitor's color depth momentarily. In the display properties, change to 16-bit color. Then change back to 32-bit.

  • When turned on MacBook a icon of a folder with a question mark in it keeps flashing, what does this mean?

MacBook turns on but doesn't go to home screen, instead a folder icon with a question mark on it keeps flashing.

It means that your mac is unable to boot, try doing a safe boot http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1455 first, if that does not work insert your OSX disc (the one that came with your mac) and boot to that, post back with a report.
Is your backup 'bootable' (Carbon Copy or SuperDuper) or non-'bootable' (Time Machine)

  • Why does the latest version of ITunes change all of my web based icons to ITunes programs and all of my desktop icons to the ITunes icons?

when downloading itunes why all my web based programs change to itunes programs and all of the desktop icons change to itune icons?

That's because iTunes is registering itself as the default application to open those kinds of files. I believe you can stop that behavior when you install it. To revert a file type's default handler you need to select it and select "Get Info" from the File menu and change the settings under "Open with:" to your desired application.

  • Why do my two google icons on my desktop keep changing?

The google search and google gmail icons on my desktop keep changing between the Firefox globe with the fox around it to the google white G with the blue background. Everything works just fine either way but I would like to know what is causing this and be able to decide for myself which ones to use.
    thank you.

I don't know how to do that, besides, isn't it clear enough? The two google icons on my desk top, (google search and google mail) keep switching between the Firefox icon to the google icon. The google icon is a blue box with a white g in it and the Firefox icon is the orange globe with a fox wrapped around it. Can you not visualize that? It just does it at random times, it's not flipping back and forth as you watch it.

You have to connect the iPad to your computer with the supplied cord and be running iTunes on the computer. You need the latest version of iTunes which you seem to have - but read the article.

I accepted an IOS  update on my phone this morning, now it keep flashing the apple logo intermittently and i can't access my phone at all. I can't make or recieve calls or texts at all. What do i do to rectify this please?

You should really read the manual.
"How do you restore from backup? "
Restore.  When given the choice, choose to use backup.
"And how can I check to see if the pics and videos are on my computer somewhere first??"
They would only be where you put them.  What program did you use to import them?  Pics/vids taken with ipod are not part of the sync process at all.  You should be importing them just as you would with any digital camera.
If you did not import them, then they are not on your computer.

  • Desktop keeps breaking Icons

    Hi there,
Recently been having issues with my desktop. All my icons are broken, the links and actually shortcuts are fine but all my icons show up corupt and it doesn't matter if i create new icons or not, they all break..
I'm assuming this was due to an update for a program that i use, that also happened to contain a trojan, thankfully i managed to clean the little bugger off the laptop with out much of an issue, 12 ish scans by 4 different programs and half a dozen restarts later. Tho i haven't managed to fix any of the icons yet. And the only icons that don't seem to be affected are either folder files or are programs on the C:/ Drive, all the icons for programs that have broken all seem to share my D:/ drive in common.
I was wondering if i could get some help in sorting out and fixing my problem, at current i have most my prgrams pinned to my tool bar where they haven't been affected but i'd really rather have them on my desktop for easy access.
    thanks

It's time you told us what you've tried. No point in spinning our wheels here. For instance, you didn't tell us what happens in another account.
Other account? I only have one account on this laptop, mine. the other one isn't really an account, it's an anti identity theft dummy that eset 8 created incase i'm out in public and someone swipes my laptop
    and as far as tried.
Scanned  the desktop with windows fixit to fix the issue: failed fixit couldn't find it
Scanned the folder files with windows fixit to fix the issue: failed fixit couldn't find it
Deleted iconcache manually and restart Failed
Deleted iconcache via Rebuild_icon_cache.bat and restart Failed
Cant do a roll back because i had to delete and disable rollback to stop trojan from infecting those files
Scanned for problem with eset 8 failed eset couldn't find it
Scanned for problem malwareBytes failed Malware couldn't find it
Scanned with Viper rescue scanner. Failed Viper can't find or fix it
Deleted all icons and restart, and attempted to replace them all failed accept for the few that were untouced on the image in a previous post.
Increasing the size of the iconcache failed also.
so i've tried just about everything. i guess i'll just have to use snap shot to roll back 3 years. as much as i really don't wanna lose 3 years of stuff
