All kinds of weird graphical issues

Out of the blue I've had all kinds of weird graphical glitches happening on my macbook.
-The check-mark that shows what network I'm using under the airport menu bar is upside-down
-The spotlight menu background is now light gray instead of blue
-Some icons for applications I'm running on the dock keep growing bigger, cutting off the image
-Some buttons have graphical glitches when clicked on
-The r/y/g buttons at the top left of windows have a sharp top-right corner
I'm sure there's more stuff happening with all this going crazy, but that's what I've noticed so far. I'd post pictures here if I could.
Any ideas?

I would run the AHT "Apple Hardware Test". It is included with your system restore discs. There could be graphics chip errors (voltage etc) or it could be software based. I am betting it is SW based as I have had this issue before with hard corners on the windows and general graphic anomalies.
Also try booting to MAC OS on your machine from different source. Disc or Hard Disk.
Failing all that I think I fixed my issue a few years ago with an Archive and Install. It will replace your System Folder but keep all your user data. Then patch with the combo update to 10.6.6.

• I downloaded Mtn. Lion about three weeks ago to my early 2008 24" IMAC. Logging in generates all sort of weird graphics and finally a lock up. Unusable except under safe mode.

I have been on the phone with technical service twice ( both as helpful as they could be) and took the computer into the apple store to have the hardware checked out. All of the hardware checked out. They installed Lion in place which is useless to our family as the last backup was done under Mtn. Lion in safe mode. I reinstalled everthing from the backup and can work from safe mode but this has its obvious disadvantages.
What happens is when (if I get this far) I log in, the desktop graphics go "crazy" and eventually the computer locks up. I have reinstalled Mtn. Lion numerous times with no improvement to the situation. I post this out of frustration and hoped for answers. That $20 download is not worth the cost of the loss of use of the Office programs, the Adobe programs not to mention photos, teaching documents, scouting documents, family documents, music, that are all somewhat in limbo because of this mess.
As a long time Apple product user I have not come to expect this kind of problem from Apple products. I have not been advised of how I will know when a "fix" has been arrived at leaving me further in the dark and discouraged. School is starting up on Monday and this computer gets a lot of use from both a teacher and a High School student.
Apple, you said that our particular model was compatible with Mtn. Lion. It has been checked out at the local Apple store and everything found to be OK. Our backup is under Mtn. Lion (running in Safe Mode). We have no way to go back to Snow Leopard to retrieve and run all of our previous programs. So Apple, the ball is 100% in your court. When are we going to have the solution?

Well I believe I was able to clear those two programs out. I still had the dmg files with each having an uninstall. VirtualBox was a clean uninstall and while the Palm SDK would seem to be gone it was not as clean an uninstall, having repeated it several times.
I have since restarted three times, once after pulling the plug from the back and waiting for several minutes. One time I thought it was going to be stable but after about 2 minutes it started with the graphics problem again and then finally locked up.
Could Skype or Flash have something to do with this?

• [SOLVED] weird graphics issue on KDE

look what is this
what is going on here
everything else works fine (posting from chromium right now)
i figure it might be a driver issue
lspci gives VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82865G Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)
so i installed extra/xf86-video-intel 2.17.0-2 (xorg-drivers xorg) [installed] X.org Intel i810/i830/i915/945G/G965+ video drivers
are there alternative open source drivers, or should i try setting up proprietary drivers somehow
or maybe this isnt even a driver issue?
edit: forgot to mention this is KDE full install with the latest stable xorg and kde packages
Last edited by alchemator (2012-02-24 04:40:18)

There are no proprietary drivers for intel, there's just what you have installed. There's one problem though - 8xx cards aren't supported anymore. You're lucky you get any picture at all. But for proper functioning you'll have to either go without 3d acceleration, or possibly without any acceleration at all (except xv overlay for video playback).
To turn off 3d accel, create /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf with this:
Section "Device"
Identifier "old intel stuff"
Driver "intel"
Option "DRI" "off"
EndSection
To turn off all acceleration:
Section "Device"
Identifier "old intel stuff"
Driver "intel"
Option "ShadowFB" "on"
EndSection

• [SOLVED, kinda] Extremely weird ntfs issue

Here's the problem: I have an NTFS partition where I keep some video files. Browsing that partition in Windows, I can see and access all the files. When I mount it in Linux, however, most files are missing.
Any ideas?

Umm... I think I solved this, kinda.
First I tried to unmount the disk, but it failed with:
~ sudo umount /dev/sda1
umount: /dev/sda1: device is busy
So, I tried to find what is keeping it busy:
fuser -m /dev/sda1
And it said "/bin/bash" was responsible! Weird, but I closed all my terminals, started urxvt and now I could umount!
At this point mounting manually solved all my problems. I can access the disk with its full content.

• Weird graphical issue in Photos app.

http://img696.imageshack.us/i/imagecmx.jpg/
When I open the photos app and go to home or another app then, reopening photos app will show a screen that has a graphical glitch everytime. Do you have something like this as seen on the image on above? How can I solve this.
I'll appreciate any help. Thanks.
(I'm using iOS 4.3.3 on iPhone 4)

Leylifer,
You may have to restore your device. This should solve that. If you have not synced your phone lately you will lose all your information since your last sync. You may try resetting first which is holding down both buttons for at least 10 seconds. (Until it shuts of and turns back on with out letting go)

• Weird graphical issues when Photoshop is started up

Basically, whenever i start up photoshop, i get something that looks like
which disappears after i click away. I don't know what is going on, and even though it does disappear once i click, its still disconcerting as it only started happening after i upgraded to Yosemite
It also happens sometimes when i start up games, but not to the extend that photoshop causes.
i don't know what you guys need but
here is a copy paste of the hardware overview
Hardware Overview:
Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro8,3
Processor Name: Intel Core i7
Processor Speed: 2.2 GHz
Number of Processors: 1
Total Number of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB
L3 Cache: 6 MB

my mac is a 17 inch that is around 3 and a half years old. Because i'm an artist, the 15 inch screen is a little small for me so i don't want to upgrade. I'm planning on buying an imac, but i don't want this condition on my macbook to escalate.

Hi blinkingkills,
Given your model identifer, it would appear that your MacBook Pro has both integrated and discrete graphics processing, as noted below:
About integrated video on Intel-based Macs - Apple Support
Since the issue seems to only be occuring during graphics intensive tasks (Photoshop, games), it may be a good first step to check for any potential hardware issues involving the discrete GPU. You may find the following article helpful:

• Did I mess up by downloading MacKeeper? Downloaded last year and today my computer is doing all kind of weird stuff and Mackeeper kept popping up to renew and I did. Still have problems with my browser and popups!?

I downloaded MacKeeper last year. Today my browser is messed up and I am getting popups. MacKeeper keeps popping up to download, so I updated my subscription-still messed up. Is this malware and if so, why did it show up a year later and after I paid again to update!?

You installed a variant of the "VSearch" trojan. Remove it as follows.
This malware has many variants. Anyone else finding this comment should not expect it to be applicable.
Back up all data before proceeding.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
/Library/LaunchAgents/com.projectx.agent.plist
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Drag the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password.
Repeat with each of these lines:
/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.projectx.daemon.plist
/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.projectx.helper.plist
Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Then delete the following items in the same way:
/Library/Application Support/projectx
/System/Library/Frameworks/v.framework
The problem may have started when you downloaded and ran an application called "MPlayerX." That's the name of a legitimate free movie player, but the name is also used fraudulently to distribute VSearch. If there is an item with that name in the Applications folder, delete it, and if you wish, replace it with the genuine article from mplayerx.org.
This trojan is often found on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content such as movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Then, still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
if it's not already checked.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

Yes that is normal. I have no problem with CS6, No lag or hesitation.
A tip for you if your creating the mask using a copy of a color channel. Set the brush blending mode to "Overlay" This will protect the mask Black and White areas. You will only be able yo paint in gray areas of the mask. When areas turn 0,0,0 Black or 255,255,255 White they become protected too. Use a Wacom tablet soft brush low opacity and many strokes

• 3GS, power on hangs at apple logo, plus all kinds of other weirdness

started a couple of days ago, calendar app would crash on startup... or out of the blue, the whole thing would crash back to the apple startup logo.
anyway, it won't get past the logo on it's own, but I can get into restore mode and do a clean restore from there... all seems to work, or not... i've done about 15 to 20 iterations on this so far, but I just can't get this thing stable...
I've seen all kinds of weird things, Itunes suddenly losing the device... iTunes saying after it lost contact with the 3GS that there's only 16 gig there when there's 32, syncing Itunes library to the device causes, at varying moments, a crash of the 3GS...
not workable this way.
my old iPhone3G works fine (I pulled it back out the box, upgraded to 3.1.2, put all the normal apps on it, synced with me.com... it just works...
I've done recoveries, from a backup or as a fresh machine, also did *well tried* the erase/reset idea, it just came back to the apple logo and hung from there.
This thing worked just fine from 3GS launch day until now... bring it back and let 'em fix it? My hunch is that there flash memory that is flaked, or there's something with the CPU that's messed up (as if power/throttling isn't working as it ought to.).
is there anything I should have tried that I haven't done yet?
thanks,
Michael

thanks, was afraid of that.
called T-Mobile here in the Netherlands on what the procedure is, apparently I've got a TWO year warranty on the thing, so, they'll have it for up to two weeks, and then I should have it back (working) again.
cheers,
Michael

• Finder: graphic issues while in icon view

Hi there,
my Macbook Pro becomes more and more sluggish since i upgraded to Yosemite. Worst thing i noticed is icon view in Finder. It does not show up correctly and has some weird graphic issues. I made a video while using the guest account: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jo5JUnmK6n4&feature=youtu.be
Any idea?
Thank you!
MacBook Pro (Retina, 13', Mitte 2014), 2,8 GHz Intel Core i5, 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, Intel Iris 1536 MB

We were discussing this issue on this thread: Re: Anybody else getting black bars on Finder items names?
This graphic issue only appears in icon view as you have stated. The workaround was to put everything in list view.
I have been testing for the last week or so, with Icon view after deleting the com.apple.finder.plist. So far it's a lot better.
My MBP [Late 2013] was a dog after the Yosemite upgrade.
I ended up doing a SMC and PRAM reset, my performance is almost back to normal but not as good as when on Mavericks 10.9.5.
I hope Apple releases update 10.10.1 soon.
Anyway, hope this helps.

I'm having a lot of issues with firefox and cannot figure out how to get help. It began when I updated to 13. I get all kinds of ad popups, I cannot play one game on FaceBook called Farm Town at all, and I keep getting an AVG popup about cookies that I cannot get rid of. These issues are causing me to use Chrome very often even though I like Fox better. I've searched and searched how to get help and cannot find anything. How does one get personal technical help?? These issues do not happen in Chrome at all. Thanks.

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.
You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

• How Can I Fix The Graphics Issue...?

After having my computer for a few years, it started getting an artifact around the mouse, and when it did that, everything was frozen, key commands didn't work, and I would have to manually shut it down.
I went to the Apple store, and they couldn't get it to boot, even with their external drive. The guy at the Apple store took my computer into the back, and a few minutes later, brought it out. He said he had gotten it to boot, without their external drive, but wouldn't tell me how. He said there was a problem with my video card. He said $400 to fix it.
Not having the money, I left. A friend told me how to safe boot the computer, and now it will turn on, despite the artifacts and graphics problems. Why didn't the guy at the store tell me this? It's obviously the only way he could have booted it. He wanted to charge me $50 to back up my data, when I could do it myself under the safe boot.
The thing is, when using safe boot, I have no audio or video functionality- the camera doesn't work, the speakers don't work, and the disc drive doesn't work. I've read up on this, and it's an issue for a lot of macs, from about the time I bought mine. They say there was too much glue used somewhere in the computer (2 or 3 little chips with too much glue or something), and over time the glue/ adhesive gets too hot, and spreads to other areas and ruins them (ie. my graphics card). That's my simplified understanding of the issue, anyway.
Why won't Apple replace it for me? They won't let me trade it in, because it won't boot right, but this is an issue they were aware of at some point. I spent a lot of money on this laptop and it's really nothing more than a digital typewriter now.
Does anyone know how I can fix the graphics issue? Aside from shelling out the money I don't have for something that's really Apple's fault? It'd be really nice to be able to, I don't know, watch things and listen to things. That was the whole reason I got this thing.
Thanks for any ideas, feedback, sympathy, empathy or other comments.
<Edited by Moderator>

Ok, you are right, maybe I don't know it for a fact . . . but from all the things I read in various forums, there was a batch (or something similar) of macs (the exact kind I have) that did have too much glue on some parts, and it caused all sorts of problems for different people, most of those problems being with the graphics card. Apparently the excess glue overheats and leaks out of where it's supposed to stay, and whatever it has the misfortune of getting on goes to pot.
I got very brave, thinking my computer was shot- I opened it, and there was, indeed, crusty glue coming out from under some ... things ... three square chip like things ... and it had seeped onto the edges my graphics card. Having seen the inside of other laptops, I know it was not supposed to look like that no matter how old it is.
This whole issue happened just a few months after my (overpriced, unused) AppleCare expired. Irony?
I did backup all my data and files (no thanks to the Apple people; and on safe boot the disc drive won't work, so I had to borrow my friend's external hard drive for backing up), and did a clean install with the original discs. It was a huge hassle, and when it was finally done, I booted my computer normally. It worked for about 10 minutes before it got artifacts all over and froze, at which point I had to force shut it down. I've tried the clean reinstall a few times, but the problem (I think) is that the glue inside already did the damage, and my graphics card is shot. So, I've been running it on safe boot for months. No music. No video. No disc drive. OH- and the best part- on safe boot, the airport won't work. I can't use wi-fi, and I can't take my laptop anywhere because I'm tethered to a modem. It's the worst thing ever. All of it. It's horribly depressing.
I'm just really frustrated and irritated that this happened, and Apple won't do anything. I do realize they don't HAVE to do anything- buyer beware and whatnot- BUT as a reputable company they should at least let me trade in with the discount or whatever. I didn't have to choose Mac, it was the most expensive computer I looked at- but it has so many awesome functions and things . . . that I can't even use . . .
As a poor college student I don't have the option to get a new computer or have Apple replace any parts in this one, so I just kind of feel like Apple screwed me over. Their fault? Maybe not. Their product? Yes, so they should want to keep me as a future customer. At least I think so.
I guess this isn't quite a question. But I would love more feedback, ideas, anything. Has anyone else had this problem? Can I replace my own video card? Will Apple do anything at all? I love macs but I might never get another one, since this could happen again.
And- unrelated- who changed the title of my post, and how, and why?

firsttly, sorry, this could be a double post, i think i forgot deleting the old one in the wrong category.
well, i don't really know if this is a common issue or whether this is firmware or snow leopard related: if i apply the bad-tv filter in fcp7 (fcs3) my screen is going crazy after a few seconds: squares and dots in all kinds of colours etc...then snow leopard freezes and i have to force a reboot. everything else is working great! any ideas or related problems out there?
i've got the 1.3 firmware update. clean install!

I was teaching an FCP class today, and I had the same problem with the Bad Film filter on four new 24" iMacs, each with 256MB ATI Graphics Card.
They were all running SN 10.6.1 and FCP 7.0.1

10.7 was horrible unstable so I waited until 10.7.1 and tried it again. Well I have to say that it is still a defective OS. I am reverting to Snow as we speak from my carbon clone copy.. This is really the worst OSX I have ever used. It gives me random Kernel panics for no reasons, unstable airport and hundreds of small issues that are just not necessary. For instance I can't use QuickTime in Lion to trim a videoclip ( the UI goes mad and the trimslider becomes inoperable and hangs the Player window ) while in Snow it is no problem. Itunes gives me crackling sound when the equalizer is turned on, Graphical glitches in Photoshop, games crashing, Preview.app not working with some pdfs, so I need Adobes reader which I never used before.. It is definately not ripe for mass usage. Might 10.7.2 or 10.7.3 fix it, but not yet.
* and just for the records : the hardware is absoltely ok. Because in Snow it works as it should. ( So many Lion fanbois are talking : "your Ram is defect", defintely NOT. - Lion is defect! ).
Shame on you Apple.

• Weird Optimus issue

I've noticed that if I boot the Ghost 15 SRD and then restart the system normally, the discrete GPU is the only one functioning on the restart within Win7. I have to shut the system down and then reboot in order to regain the integrated graphics adapter again. I have autodetect OS turned on in the BIOS (1.35) and my only OS is Win7 Pro64.
