All Logins fail in Safari and Firefox

Question

I'm having a curious issue with my browsers (Safari 4.04, Firefox 3.5.5), I can no longer login into any site that requires username / pw.
For example on this forum, I get re-directed to the New Account page. Trashed all cookies, cleared caches, rebooted but nothing helps. Replaced relevant folders from TimeMachine but still no luck. As it occurs in both browsers, I suspect the issue is somewhere deeper in the machine.
Life w/o browsers nowadays is a major hassle as banking accounts etc are out of reach, so I'm reverting to an old Powerbook to get this posted.
Suggestions anyone?

HI,
If by chance a proxy isn't the issue, it could be your Keychain preference files are corrupted. Locate this file:
com.apple.keychainaccess.plist
~/Library/Preferences. Move that file to the Trash and restart your Mac. That might help Firefox also.
If that doesn't help...
1) Quit Safari
2) Open Keychain Access. (Applications/Utilities) Find the "Safari AutoFill" item. Delete it.
3) Relaunch Safari. Next time it asks for authorization, click "Always Allow".
Make sure your Safari preferences are set correctly.
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Preferences then select the AutoFill tab. Make sure:
User names and passwords is selected.
In Firefox, from that Menu Bar, click Firefox / Preferences - Security. Make sure Remember passwords for sites is selected.
