ALL LUT's, looks, et al should be in the "common files" folder!

Something that gets posted here and the other related forums several times a week it seems is the problem of applying a look or LUT in Speedgrade or some specialized effect based on presets or add-ons in AfterEffects that looks great. BUT ... when you get back to PPro, it's not visible.
Almost always the answer is that the look, LUT, preset or whatever that was "invoked" in Ae or Sg needs to be copied over to the proper PrPro folder for such things. Sometimes you need the dang thing put in all THREE locations, PrPro, Sg, & Ae.
WHY? Not to be rude, but isn't that what the Adobe "common folder" should be used for? Especially in the day of the dynamic/direct link projects, it's a pita to have to go find the blame thing and copy about the hard-drive. Wastes time and disk-space and creates totally needless clutter.
I've put in a feature request for this, y'all are welcome to jump in ...

All files and folders in the iPhoto library are essential - there are no user servicable parts in it - the really simple rule is NEVER make any changes of any sort to the structure or content of the iPhoto lbibrary
And note that most people have found that Carbonite does not backup the iPhoto library so tha tit can be restored and used - I believe that one person has posted that they were successful and many have been unsuccessful
Then the bottom line it that the iPhoto library must be always treated a single entity - it is a SQLite database and can not be manged in pieces

Generally I would not use Facebook for sharing any photos, it compresses the photos substantially, and when you have shadows and dark colours you get visible "bands" where there should be subtle gradients, ie at sunsets and sunrises.
It sounds like you are using two methods to upload to Facebook:
    1. Sharing from within Aperture, which basically syncs Facebook with your Aperture album, so any changes made at either end gets synced, hence the deletions from Albums, although the original file should still be in your library, just removed rom the album. It is like a playlist in iTunes.
    2. Exporting pics and uploading to Facebook from the browser.
I am not sure how method 1 gets compressed, but I know that uploading hi-res jpegs to Facebook using method 2 results in poor quality images.
I wouldn't even bother comparing option 1 or 2, and they will both be poor images once you view them on Facebook, as opposed to viewing uploaded images on proper image sharing / hosting sites.
Your problem is not with Aperture, it is using Facebook for showing your work.
If you export pics form Aperture at high res jpegs or TIFFs your images will be fine.
If you insist to use Facebook as your way to share your work, then your workflow should be this:
    1. Right click images you want to share.
    2. Select Export version.
    3. Export as 100% size and ensure the export settings are set at 100% quality.
    4. Upload this pic into Facebook.
This will get you the best image size and resolution on Facebook.
    See how you go.

  • Where should I store the collatoral files that are associated with photos stored in lightroom?

Where should I store the collatoral files that are associated with photos stored in lightroom? Items such as pdf files, word documents, etc. How should I connect them to each other so I can find both the photo and the related data?

Lightroom itself will not help you with pdf, word, etc.
However, there is a plugin you can use called AnyFile which will allow you to manage these documents in Lightroom (by assigning keywords and other metadata) so that you can search for all documents (photos, pdf, word, music, powerpoint, etc.) with given metadata.
Because you do this via metadata, it doesn't matter where you put these files. Put them anywhere you want.

  • Where should I store the rendered files?

(My Color projects are in "Documents")
Where should I store the rendered files?
On my external HD with my FCP media? Or on my Hard Disk is fine ?
Can I calculate that 1 Go of DV NTSC = 1 Go of rendered file in 10 bits?
    Many thanks

this came up as a topic at a recent FCPUG seminar.
Since the dawn of time, it is recommended practice to keep your media off the application drive.
The more disks you have spinning, the better the chance that you will get the data throughput rates that will support the demands of your media. Whether that's a RAID or a JBOD, its up to you how you value your time and assets.
I keep things as 'external' as possible, mostly because clients are anxious to get the material back, but I'd have to keep moving stuff around just to maintain the space. And I still have to get merciless with all the temporary FCP render stuff.

  • HT201302 My old computer crashed and I lost all my personal photos.  I had previously synced the "My Favorites" folder on the old computer to my iPhone.  How do I now download those photos to my new computer?

My old computer crashed and I lost all my personal photos.  I had previously synced the "My Favorites" folder on the old computer to my iPhone.  How do I now download those photos to my new computer.  Same thing with my iTunes music library.

Unfortunately, I did not have the photos stored seperately.  When I set up iTunes on the new computer, I clicked "sync photos" and it said it would sync to the photos in the my pictures folder on the computer.  This is a new computer, so the folder is empty.  I am hesitant to allow the sync, because I do not want to wipe those photos from my iPhone, and never see them again.  This is a terrible spot to be in.
I have also lost my iTunes music library for the computer.  I subscribed to itunes Match, thinking it would upload my music from my phone to iCloud.  It only added 57 songs that I had purchased on the store previously.  None of the cd's I added where transferred.

  • Where should I save the playlists file

In what specific file on my computer should i save my iTunes personal playlists files

If you mean Playlists created in your iTunes Library, iTunes does all that for you. You don't have to "save" them anywhere. As you edit them, iTunes "saves" them and they should be in the same place when you next open iTunes.

  • Should I modify the camera file to change the greyscale resolution of my Photonfocus camera from 8 to 12 bits?

I have some difficulties to use my Photonfocus camera with 12 bits greyscale resolution.
    I have a Photonfocus camera MV-D1024E-160-CL-12, a NI PCIe-1429 frame grabber, PFRemote 2.0 and Measurement & Automation Explorer 4.2.1.3001.
If I work with 8 bits greyscale resolution (PFRemote -> Data Output: Resolution : 8 bit) and look at the image with MAX (Système -> Périphériques et interfaces -> NI-IMAQ Devices -> img0: NI PCIe-1429 -> Channel 0: PhotonFocus MV-D1024-160 (file in attachment), everything is working.
Now I'd like to work with 12 bits and I don't know exactly what I have to change? I've tried to change only the resolution in PFRemote (PFRemote -> Data Output: Resolution : 12 bit) but then the image in MAX remains a 8 bit resolution. Then I've tried also to modify the camera file (file in attachment). I've put the "BitDepth" and the "BitsPerComponent" at 12 instead of 8 and the "BinaryThreshold" to (0,4095). But when trying to grab an image in MAX, an error occured: "Error 0xBFF600FE Le nombre de bits par pixel requis est invalide".
Should I really modify the camera file in order to grab 12 bits images? Or what should I do?
    Thank you

    PhotonFocus MV-D1024-160.txt ‏5 KB

    Hi toto26,
Thank you very much for the information. I did exactly the same thing as you suggested for 8-bit, and I were able to change the resolution (number of pixels), exposure time, frame rate without any problem. I understand that I need to coordinate the MAX icd file and the settings of PFRemote.
When I tried to switch to 12-bit, I found that I need the camera file (.icd) for 12-bit. I tried the attached icd in the previous discussion (Photonfocus MV-D1024E-160-CL-12 12-bit 1429 X4 only.zip 2 KB). There was an IMAX Error: Error 0xBFF6002C, FIFO overflow caused acquisition to halt. Then I think maybe this camera file is not good for me because I have a PCIe-1427, instead of a PCIe-1429.
So, I downloaded the camera file generator (from the same link you suggested) to create my own camera file. When I run the generator, the first window popped out was for camera setting, and there was no Photonfocus in the choice for the Manufacturer. Is it true that I cannot create camera files for Photonfocus camera, or I simply don't know how to use the generator?
Thanks again for the help and I look forward to more advices.

  • Where should I put the configuration file?

    Hi
I'm developping a web application using IBM's websphere as my application server. My application reads configuration information from a properties file.
My question is: what's the right location to put the configuration file? Should I provide a fixed path, or should I just put in the webserver's execute directory?
    Thanks in advance
    Pedro

I'd consider what the configuration file is cheifly
    tied to.
If there are only a small number of parameters then
put them into the web.xml as initial parameters and
    access then via servlet cotext.
If they are tied to some class, then I'd put the
properties file next to the relevant class file and
    use getClass().getResourceAsStream().
If they relate to the web-app as a whole, I'd put
them in the WEB-INF directory and access then using
    getServletContext().getResourceAsStream("WEB-INF/xxx.p
roperties");The one thing you definitely shouldn't do is use an
absolute file path. Thanks for the reply.
Forgive my ignorance, but how can I access getServletContext from my web application?
    Thanks again!

  • What Exactly should be in the Capture Scratch Folder ?

I apologize for the moronic question, but.....
I recently installed a second internal Hard Drive in my computer which
I was planning to reassign the scratch disc folder to, so that my external
hard drive which holds all the media / video, would not have to do double
duty in holding all the render files, etc. as well as the media.
But in going to do this, I realize I have almost 200gb of video ( in the
form of quicktime movie files ) already there. So if I move that folder,
I am not really solving anything, as a large portion of the media is
    already in it.
Can I with relative painless-ness, set up a new scratch disc on the internal
drive, or will this just create an avanlanche of media not found headaches
    and the like.
Again, I apologize for what is clearly something I just did not set-up
properly 3 years ago. I do not use this program that regularly or else
there is a chance I might understand it better.
Thanks for any and all help / suggestions,
    Sterne
    FCP 5.1.4 Older G5 computer.

I may not be understanding you correctly, but I think you will be ok with what you are doing:
Main hard drive with the OS and all your applications.
Second internal hard drive you are adding will contain all the scratch disks and project files.
For example, on this I have a folder entitled "FCP Docs on HD6" which contain all my scratch disks of Audio Render Files/Autosave Vault/Capture Scratch/Render Files/Thumbnail Cache Files/Waveform Cache Files that I set under FCP preferences. I also have another folder on this hard drive that I have labeled for a client--ex. Smith Project--and in here I keep all the other items for this project--the FCP project itself, any jpegs I'm using, any clips I've made self-contained to do smoothcam on, etc.
On your external hard drive you can keep what you have done before and not transfer them over to the new FCP Docs folder. The old project will still access those capture scratches from that external drive. (However, if you have now assigned those scratch folders to your new internal drive, when you open this old project and work on it, the NEW captures/renders/etc will be on the NEW scratch disks while what you have done in the past will still remain in the old.) You just have to remember when you are cleaning out your project or saving it to archive that some of your files are on your external.
You can have different scratch disks on separate hard drives, it just gets confusing if you have too many. FCP will use the scratch disks you LAST assigned. I repeat it gets confusing, just like this explanation probably is

  • New Curve Firmware - Should I delete the Vendors file first?

I got an email today saying there's a new version of the Curve 8900 firmware available (an update to v4.6.1) which "includes optimizations and enhancements approved by your wireless service provider."
I'm with T-mobile and my phone was unlocked following T-mobile's instructions.  That said, before updating, should I remove the Vendor's file, or is that not necessary since I am actually a T-mobile customer?
Has anyone had and good/bad experiences with this new update?

I am with T-Mobile too, and I upgraded the software (which was actually a downgrade from Italy's software).
So far, so good. When I upgraded to the Itally release, I noticed faster BB workings, but a lag on the screen when answering or ending a call - I still have that same lag with this software.
I must say though, that I do feel better having a T-Mobile approved (per the email from BB) software on my phone - just in case I have to call about a problem. (if you have any software not approved by them, and you call for help, they will tell you to install their software and call back if you are still having a problem.)

    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
    (2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Bonjour entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    (5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another install. Does it go through properly this time?

    - I suspect that he went to Settings>General>Reset>Erase all content and settings.  For 1G or 2G iPod that can take hours and it will likely stall out if not connected to a charging source.
    Try the following:
    - A reset.
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - The connect to computer and try to restore via iTunes.
    - Id something is still showing onthe screen, disconnect from computer/charging source and let the battery fully drain. After charging for an hour, Try the reset and restore.
    - If you can turn the iPod off, se if placing the iPod in recovery mode and then restore. For recovey mode:
iPhone and iPod touch: Unable to update or restore

  • Why should I use the OpenDocument file format?

Forgive the noobish sounding question, because I'm definitely not a linux newbie anymore. The current xkcd (http://www.xkcd.com/743) got me thinking. I never had a problem with .doc files before, because everything can read them. And I'd never used .odt files before because I only recently discovered abiword-plugins lets me read .odt files in Abiword.
So, I'd like you to please convince me why I should use .odt files over .doc files. Thank you.

I wonder if it would be worth it to teach people how to use LaTeX. I certainly don't think it's more complicated than writing a Word document in all cases. I can't believe how much time my coworkers spend try to "format" many of the 50+ page documents we work with. So often I hear problems like "This page break is wrong", "The index links are all messed up", "How do I get rid of this space?", and similar. Some of the time the answer is "We'll just leave it" or "I'll just re-write it". I thought all of those big fancy buttons on the top of the window were supposed to make writing a Word document easy? /rant
Say, is there an application that allows a person to right-click on a TEX file and "Open (as PDF)" and "Edit (as TEXT)", For any OS? You know, kind of like a JIT compiler.
    ...and is this too off-topic?
Well, I could share my experience here.
    1. LaTeX is probably similar to Perl or Vim in terms of the learning curve. I mean, it's more "learn as you work" thing: LaTeX relies heavily on it CTAN repository and there are lots of different ways to do the same thing. Which is why all the guides are more like cookbooks with recipes how to perform different kind of tasks, not a 101 tutorial.
    2. LaTeX is more oriented towards large documents, rather books than articles. Which means, one doesn't really need all of the features that LaTeX has to markup a document less than 50 pages. Most of the guides teach you how to work with books, while most of the users need to work with smaller texts. It's not a real problem for somebody who uses LaTeX for publishing his books to use it for smaller texts, but in other cases it's a bit challenging.
Whenever you grab a LaTeX guide, you can strip it off all the advanced topics and you'll find out that merely one or two chapters are needed for most WYSIWYG converts: document structure (the essential packages, etc), beautifiers (boldface, italic, underlining, etc), paragraph formatting (alignments, columns, etc) headers/titles, tables, images embedding and footnotes. All of this can be described in 50 pages at most, and that would be totally comprehensive.
So basically, one just needs a guide to LaTeX for word processing. Learning LaTeX for that purposes using publishing-oriented guides is really time consuming.
Perhaps, there is even some kind of a special macro for word processing, that has less features, but makes them easier to memorize and use - I don't know.
Actually, Pandoc's user guide could be a nice starting point, since pandoc has exactly the needed feature set. You should just expand it with some page properties (interlinear interval, page margins, etc), a review of the available tools for LaTeX (aucTeX, vim-latex, LyX, Kile, gummi, may be some popular extensions to Geany, Gedit, Kate), some popular Web resources (package reviews, tips-and-tricks wikis, etc) and some further reading.

I have never downloaded a file from an e-mail, so I am "dancing in the dark" on this. When I download the file from the e-mail, I cannot determine what support engine I should place it in. One choice given me was Microsoft Work Words but when I select it, I can go no further.

    I have the same configuration:
    10.7.2 Aperture 3.2.2
When I drag an image from one project to another it just moves to the other project - no special preference settings required.
If there are several versions of the same image, all versions go along with the image.
If the images are stacked, all versions and all of the stack move to the new project.
Only if images are synched with other services, iCloud, MobileMe then occasionally they appear again in their original albums. Are your images part of synched albums?
