All messages in my inbox disappeared!

So yesterday afternoon, I left my computer running with mail on, and I went out for some coffee. When I came back, Mail was no longer running, but there was no "application quit unexpectedly" message. I started mail up, and when it loaded, the inbox was completely empty. I went to me.com and checked my mail via a browser - empty. Per the instructions of mobileme support, I checked mail on my iPhone. Before the iPhone was able to sync with the server, all the messages were there; but as it updated, they all disappeared before my eyes.
All of my sent messages are fine, as are all of the deleted items that are in the trash bin. But nothing remains of anything that was in the inbox.
This also includes all of the messages that I had received through mail from another academic account. When I access that account directly through a browser, everything seems to have been deleted from the server.
No one seems to have any explanation or answer for how this could have happened. Apple says they find no problems with the server, and that they probably can't recover any of the messages because they don't backup "deleted items". Of course, I deleted nothing, but that how they're treating it.
I had cloned my hard drive a few months ago, so I have older messages backed up there. But the point is really this - HOW is it possible for messages to be wiped from the server that completely and that easily??? What could have caused this? A virus? Hacker? Magic? I'm completely mystified.

Hi,
For all of the people out there who have been having this problem (disappearing e-mails), I just wanted to let you know that MobileMe/Apple was able to recover my 100+ missing Inbox e-mails.
Now the fact that they recovered mine, doesn't mean I guess they would be able to recover everyone else's (I would think it would depend on which MobileMe server your e-mail resides at and how that server has been affected) but I wanted to let you know how I went about it.
I initiated an online chat with a MobileMe specialist (http://www.apple.com/support/mobileme/) and described the problem. They weren't able to resolve it on the spot, so they had it escalate. The next day they got back to me with an e-mail (you have to provide them with an alternate e-mail address other than your .Mac/Me "affected" one), I provided them with more info/details on my incident and the next day they sent me an e-mail telling me that they had recovered my e-mail and that it was residing in a "Recovered" folder they had created in my MobileMe account.
Best of luck to everyone,
Dimitris.

  • Saving or Archiving All Messages in Your Inbox

I'm going to revamp my entire OS & hard drive this weekend, but i want to make sure all my mail is saved. How would I go about saving or archiving all the messages in my inbox so when I finish reinstalling my OS, I can have all my messages saved and upload them back into mail (cause my emails come off the comcast server once I recieve them)

The Mail folder is found in your user folder -- Home/Library/Mail. Copy it, and the com.apple.mail.plist file found in Home/Library/Preferences, and you can restore everything using those two items. The Address Book is found in Home/Library/Applications Support/AddressBook -- copy that if you want to save contacts.

  • Inbox full message when not full, repair Inbox but all messages gone & empty Inbox keeps thinking

With an Inbox full message and couldn't download messages any more, I moved most messages to another folder under Archive but still get the same message. Reading from others' posts, I repaired Inbox but all messages there is gone and it keeps thinking forever. Tried compacting Inbox, it keeps thinking. Tried reboot and compacting (all) folders, it keeps thinking. Also deleted inbox.msf, which only one unused out of several email account's folder has, but no help. Sometimes when Inbox stops thinking, checking mail still gets Inbox full message. Wasted a whole morning already ... any idea please?

reboot your computer into safe mode with networking to stop your anti virus interfering and then compact your folders etc.

  • How to delete all messages in Alert Inbox

    Hi Guys,
Recently I have done Alert configuration. After that I got around 400 messages(mails) in my inbox. I am able delete one by one, but it is very time consuming. Is there any way to delete all mails at once.
    Advanced thanks,
    gujjeti

    Hi Jai,
We have configured alerts in July 2007 and there are lot of messages in ALRTDISP.
Does huge number of Alert messages cause any harm to functioning of SAP XI?
We want to DELETE all these alert messages (NOT the Alert) in Production environment.
Can you please let us know if there is any transaction code/program to do the same in production.
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,

  • How can I download all messages in my inbox to a CD?

I want to download my entire inbox to a CD. There are >600 messages, so I cannot do them one at a time. Is there a bulk way to do it?

This depends rather on what format you want to use to store the messages.
The safest route IMHO is to use the Thunderbird native .eml file format, which as far as possible stores your messages verbatim, including attachments. The downside is that you need an email client, such as Thunderbird, so be able to see the .eml files. Whilst eml is supposedly an industry standard, MS's email clients don't handle it well, so your store would not be useful to a huge proportion of the world's computer users.
Other options are to export your messages to plain text (which loses all the graphical content) or HTML format (which isn't always entirely accurate), or just to copy the mail store files, which are a variant of a standard known as mbox files.
The other consideration is your reason for placing messages on the CD. Is it to be able to refer to them, whiilst perhaps releasing space on your HDD, or is it a back-up against hardware failure? Each of these has an influence of the choice of methodology. Alternatively, if you want to move these messages to another computer, copying the whole profile might be a productive route.
    [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-tb Thunderbird profile article]
For most of these export options, I'd be looking at the [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/importexporttools/ ImportExportTools] add-on, which if you choose plain text or HTML, can also build index files which you can view in a browser. Recent versions also allow attachments to be preserved.

Beware! A Thunderbird profile can often be several gigabytes in size, and won't necessarily fit on a standard data DVD.

  • Inbox WAY too full, causes all messages to be lost!

A previous employee let her inbox grow to around 950MB! It was full of ads and pictures that take up lots of space. Her replacement accumulated another 20MB of emails and when she attempted to trash most of the old ones, all messages in the inbox disappeared. We followed the fix in the thread started by Diana_NC on Feb 3, 08 in this discussion and she now has a nice new inbox. The problem is that the old inbox, at 971MB, is too large to import. She does not need all the emails and would like to be able to open it just to sort out the not needed stuff and be able to keep the most recent emails. How can we accomplish this?
    Thanks!
    Jon

If the mbox file is too big for Mail to handle it, you’ll have to break it into smaller pieces. You can do that with an MBOX Breaker Script available at Allan Sampson’s website, or with Emailchemy. The former will ignore the Incoming_Mail file that I mention in the thread you referred to, but you may try importing that file directly if it’s not too big or just ignore it if all your messages are in mbox. Also, if you removed the .mbox suffix from the name of the mailbox in order to try to import the mbox files it contains, you may need to add the suffix back again for the script to recognize that folder as a mailbox.

  • N79 all messages disappeared (SW V12.0.24)

    Hi all,
I have a problem that I hope some one can help me with. While sending an SMS my N79 battery died and turned off. When I turned it on all the SMS messages in my inbox disappeared!  I lost more than 700 important messages. I check both the C: phone memory and the E: mass memory one but didn’t find any sms although I saved them in the mass. Please advice.........
    Thank you in advance.

WE HAVE THE EXACT SAME CONCERN!
Apparently you are not alone and there has been a lot of complaints to raise this issue to Nokia but it seems we have been abandoned.
This seems to be a common issue with the S60 mobile operating system.  No comment from Nokia regarding a resolution so far.
My E75 phone has also experienced the disappearing-messages-act saved in my SD card when my phone restarted from a low battery shut down.  Inbox/Draft/Sent Items were completely wiped out.
I tried to change the SMS location from SD Card to Phone Memory then back to SD Card again.
I also tried to (safely & properly) remove the SD Card then reinserted it back.  Still no go.
The worst part is that I spent 3 days searching the Internet and found that it's not rare for this problem to occur on an S60 platform yet no resolution from the web nor does Nokia offer any solution to it's customers.
They're about to lose a 12 year loyal and solid Nokia Fan (along with his friends and relatives to migrate to the Blackberry & iPhone Bandwagon) soon if they can't help us retrieve the important messages that was wiped out from our inbox. <sigh>..

  • Unable to clear inbox, still showing 1 message in inbox on icon when there are no messages in the inbox. How can I clear the 1 message from the icon indicator?

I am unable to clear 1 message in my email inbox showing on the icon. I have tried clearning out all messages in my inbox and it still shows 1 message remaining unread. I erased messages 5 days ago and since then it has been showing 1 message remaining. How can I clear this from the icon? Thanks

Ouit Mail app. (Remove from MultiTasking bar).
Double tap the home button to bring up the multitasking dock. Tap and hold an app. A red badge with a minus symbol will appear on the icons. Tap the minus symbol of Mail app to quit.

I guess you could try but I don't believe Apple can help with activation lock issues.  They may, however, be able to determine if the Apple ID belongs to one of you and reset the password for you if you can prove your identity.
You might want to try calling Apple by going to https://expresslane.apple.com; click 'More Products and Services, then 'Apple ID'.  In the next page select 'Other Apple ID Topics' then 'Lost or forgotten Apple ID password'.  Perhaps they can help determine if it's your ID and reset the password for you (and they probably have more expertise in doing this than the Apple store).

Is the MacBook the computer you have synced with in the past? If not you can use the computer that you have synced with to restore your apps. Are you sure you are using the same Apple ID that you used to purchase the Apps?

  • Need help retrieving all messages which suddenly disappeared from my inbox

my computer didn't crash, but suddenly all the messages in my inbox were gone for no reason?! They were very important, and I need to know how to retrieve them.

Firefox doesn't do email, it's strictly a web browser.
If you are using Firefox to access your mail, you are using "web-mail". You need to seek support from your service provider or a forum for that service.
If your problem is with Mozilla Thunderbird, see this forum for support.

  • Inbox loses all messages older than one/two days

So, I'm the proud new owner of an iPhone, and while I'm generally very happy with it, I'm having some email troubles that I hope someone here might help me sort out.
The issue is that all the messages that come into my mailbox disappear after a day or two, which negates (at least for me) any advantage to having on-the-go email. My iPhone is set up to receive email from a POP account, and so far, I've had no problems receiving or sending mail - it's the not-deleting-emails-from-my-inbox issue that's giving me fits.
At first, I thought it might have something to do with the settings on the desktop computer (Mac Pro) which is also set up to receive emails from this account. The mail application on the desktop had been set to delete all messages from the server a week after the message had been retrieved. Given that the messages in my iphone are deleted from the iphone's inbox a day (at most two) after retrieving the message, I don't think this is an issue (in any case, i am under the impression that the iphone works like any other email application - once it retrieves a message, it is downloaded onto the device, correct? it doesn't just live on the server). In any event, to be on the safe side, I changed the Mac Pro's email settings to never delete messages from the server, but this hasn't affected my iphone's problem.
I've toyed around with the iphone's settings, but nowhere can I find a setting that addresses this specific problem. Anyone out there had the same trouble I'm having? If so, were you able to fix it? is it something I'm overlooking?
    Thanks in advance.

That is the correct spot, what is/was that option set to under deleted Messages? Try setting it to Never and see if that might change the emails behavior. If that is not the cause then it might be a issue with the Mail Application Software on the phone in your particular case and would need to restore the phone.
Another thing to try is to remove the email account on the phone then re-add the account and see if it is doing the same thing.
