All music (eg itunes library) on an external hard drive

hello...
i was thinking...i have an imac....and three ipods...and eventually i will buy a ipod video (i now have two nanos--my kids actually--and a ipod photo60gig)
....i was considering having all of my music (itunes library) on an external HD ...so whenever i want to alter music playlists, or add CD's, or buy music, music videos and so on.....i would plug in my external HD and then do my thing ..... and then plug in my ipod after that to sync it ....
...then i can physically have all of my music on a portable music device.
...i have only about 1,000 songs but a whole crapload of dig photos on my imac...
...i have intentions of putting on all of my CD collection (several hundred CD's) onto my itunes library but i am worried about bogging down my new imac in terms of memory and so on ....this is why i am thinking of using my external HewlittPackard HD (which is a removable dockable one made specifically for my HP computer--it glides into the tower)...
..can anyone give me some advice? thanks....

You can ask iTunes to relocate your iTunes music folder from your computer to your external hard drive. So the next time iTunes looks for its music, it will look in the new place, which is the external hard drive instead of your computer's internal hard drive. Go to Preferences>Advanced. There is the location of the iTunes music folder. Change that location by pressing the brouse key and brouse to a location on your external hard drive. And everytime that iTunes opens, it will sync with the external hard drive for its music.

  • Getting all of my iTunes library onto my external hard-drive

    Hey,
I've recently noticed that my MacBook (now called a McBook pro?) is running slightly slower than usual. I have the majority of my music stored on an external hard-drive, but anything that I've downloaded looks to be stored on my MacBook's internal hard-drive. Is there anyway I can move that excess music from my MB hard-drive to my external hard-drive, without iTunes telling me that the file cannot be found next time I go to play them? I hope this might speed things up a bit.
Also, is there a way of setting my iTunes to move the music from my internal HD to the external one once it is plugged in, which would then allow me to delete the music from my internal HD and free up some space?
I'm sorry if that's all a bit confusing, but I'm quite confused myself.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
    This might do it:
[Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1751]
Once you've consolidated your library and moved it to your external drive you can launch iTunes with the Option key held down to get this message where you choose your new external library:
    !http://idisk.me.com/colinrobinson-Public/iTunes screen shots/Alt iTunes.png"!
You do need to make sure that the external is connected and mounted before doing this.

PS If you're moving everything off to the external to free up room you also need to think about having another external HD to backup what you've just moved. External drives can fail

  • HT1751 if i back up my itunes library to an external hard drive and then add subsequent music and want to back that up a few days later, can i backup the only newly added music without backing up the entire library again?

    hello,
if i back up my itunes library to an external hard drive and then add subsequent music and want to back up the newly added music a few days later, can i do it without backing up the entire library again? or do i need to back up the entire library each and every time i back up to the external hard drive?

Just copy Users/yourusername/Music/iTunes (containing your library-files) to your external drive as well as that (extaernal) folder that contains all your audio-tracks.

Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Start iTunes with the option key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.

  • I transferred my iTunes library from one external hard drive to another and added more music on the same day. How do I get rid of my duplicate files without going through them one by one which would take forever?

Please help. I have transferred my iTunes library from one external hard drive to another plus added additional music now I have duplicates of the same music in many albums. How do I delete the duplicates without going through them one by one which would take forever? I understand how to get the "show exact duplicate" feature up on iTunes but, because they were added to the library on the exact day I can't seperate them I'm that manner. So each duplicate is right next to eachother in the exact duplicate screen.

  • I have two apple id's one from my old laptop and one from my iPhone. I saved my iTunes library to my external hard drive and then tried to transfer it to my iMac. My music skips like a scratched cd now and I can't add any to my iPhone. Help please!

I have two apple id's one from my old laptop and one from my iPhone. I saved my iTunes library to my external hard drive right before my old mac laptop died and then tried to transfer it to my new iMac. Now when I try to play my old music it skips like a scratched cd. Also, now I can't add any music to my iPhone unless it was purchased recently through itunes and downloaded through icloud. I tried to "Organize" my library in hopes of correcting the problem but my iMac just ejects my external harddrive part way through. Please help!

    Ejects the harddrive?
Of what did your old Mac die?
It sounds to me like you have some file corruption somewhere.  Either in the transfer of your library to the external or the external itself is flaky if it keeps ejecting.

Yes, it can. Launch iTunes with the Option key held down and navigate to that instance of the library.

I may have found an answer here:

They only thing I can assume is that my external hard drive was slow to start and iTunes defaulted to its old directory (see the last paragraph at the link above). However, once my external was recognized shouldn't everything have fixed itself?

How can I export my iTunes Library to an external hard drive? and once i do that how can i play the library through the external drive? I basically want to be able to delete all my music on itunes once it is on my external hard drive so i can have more internal hard drive space.

  • How do I combine an iTunes library on an external hard drive (laptop) with an iTunes library on an external hard drive on my PC?

How can I combine the iTunes library on an external hard drive (hooked to laptop) with  the iTunes library on an external hard drive (hooked to PC) so that both external HD's and both laptop and PC have all the music on each one?

no need to create a secondary library - too troublesome, IMHO. you can spread your library over as many drives you can connect to your Mac (wired or wirelessly):
    iTunes > preferences > advanced.
point iTunes media folder location to the external
on the same tab, ensure the copy files ... when adding option is checkmarked
    okay out of preferences
highlight the content to be moved in iTunes and right-click
select consolidate files from the pop-up menu
wait for the process to finish
when done, you may delete the original files from your boot drive.
alternatively, you could move the whole shabang to the external HD:
copy the entire iTunes folder (not just the iTunes music or media folder) from <MacintoshHD>/users/<yourname>/music to the external, launch iTunes while holding the option(⌥) key, click on choose library when prompted, and select the iTunes folder you copied to the external.
when done, be sure to point iTunes media folder location to the external so that new additions to your library will be put there. also, you need to make sure the external is mounted on your desktop before you fire up iTunes.

  • How do I migrate my itunes library from an external hard drive to my mac mini's internal hard drive?

I have my iTunes library on an external hard drive because my macbook pro's internal hard drive didn't have enough room.  I would like to migrate or transfer the itunes files while continuing to keep my playlists.  Is there a way to do that with the migration software?

Thank you for your help.  My biggest concern is losing all of my sorted music into playlists. I have 124GB of music and resorting it will very difficult.  When I moved the itunes library with the help of a supervisor at apple tech to the external HD I had to resort it.
Will it move the entire library and setting as they are now?

  • I moved my itunes library to an external hard drive and now when I try to sync my ipad it says it is already synced to another library.

I moved my itunes library to an external hard drive and then I tried to sync my ipad.  I got a message that says my ipad is synced to another library and it will erase my ipad, which I don't want to do.   I'm not sure how to fix this problem, any ideas?

    Ok. progress...
So is your media folder called iTunes Music or iTunes Media? And does it have a folder called Music inside it?
Before going any further you should first attempt to use File > Library > Organize Library > Rearrange files in the folder "<Media Folder>" (ignore if grayed out). This will make sure that any iPod Games or Mobile Applications get placed inside the iTunes Media folder which is needed for portability.
If your iTunes Media folder is called iTunes Music, close iTunes, rename the folder as iTunes Media and start iTunes again. iTunes will automatically adjust. Close iTunes again.
On your external drive rearrange the folders that you have already copied there so that they match the layout in your active library. You should end up with a folder called X:\iTunes where X: is the external drive letter, and the media folder is X:\iTunes\iTunes Media. If the library layout was upgraded then you will need to create a Music folder inside this and move all the artist folders and Compilations into Music. You will also need to copy iPod Games and Mobile Applications from your internal drive into the new media folder. Next copy the files iTunes Library.itl, iTunes Library Extras.itdb, iTunes Library Genius.itdb, sentinel and the folder Album Artwork from the internal drive into X:\iTunes. The preceding manipulations should make the internal and external copies of your library match without you having to copy all of the media over again.
Now hold shift as you start iTunes. Click choose, browse to and open X:\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl.
Finally use File > Library > Organize Library > Consolidate files. This will ensure that any stray files that might have been added from outside your original media folder will be copied into the new one.
You can now reclaim the space used by your library on the internal drive, however before you do so I would advise you to obtain another external drive and make use of this backup tip.
