All my downloads have vanished - is there any way to recover them?

Today, I started downloading a file, and opened the Downloads window to check on speed. As I watched (and without clicking on anything after pulling the list up on the screen) the entire download history vanished, apart from the currently downloading file. Is there any way to get it back? I've tried searching for a deleted version of the places.sqlite file, but it seems it simply updated the existing file in deleting my data, and so there is no old version for me to use to recover my downloads. Note that my history is intact, with no problem there at all. But the download list is stubbornly empty. I've tried restarting the browser, but even that had no effect.
I know about database expiration, and pruning away old data, but I lost literally everything, even things I downloaded ten minutes earlier.
I am guessing that the download history is gone for good now, but I have to say it's not reasonable for a browser to act so destructively to user data without a specific user request, and without a way of recovering from the browser's failure.
Why not automatically backup these important sqlite files in the same way as bookmarks etc are backed up? Very poor indeed.

Are they removed from the Downloads folder in the Library?
Also note the the downloads are treated differently when you are in private browsing mode and are only shown temporarily on the about:downloads page (this page works in both modes).
Downloads would normally not be removed unless you would clear the downloads via the right-click context menu or otherwise clear (recent) history.

Today I completed a software update for my iPhone 5 without backing it up because I did not receive a warning that all my data would be erased and so, did not realize it would be an issue. Upon completing the update, I realized my mistake but figured it was too late to revert the damage and continued with the restoration of my phone to its factory settings.
After completing the update, I realized just how much data was lost (including important notes with financial information and images and videos of recent trips around Europe). Now I am desperate to try to recover the data deleted in the update. Is there any chance at all that I can recover something? The notes and videos are most important to me. I am also missing many Messages but that is less important to me.
    Can anyone please help?

Here's the official article from Apple on how to update your iOS.
Update the iOS software on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support
    Before you update
Back up your device to iCloud or iTunes.
That's virtually the very first thing it says to do.
There's no excuse to not have your data backed up prior to updating.  Tell me, what would you have done if, instead of this being an issue where you updated your iOS and had an error, if instead you had dropped your iPhone and it was damaged beyond repair, or if it was stolen or lost, etcetera.
Perhaps you'd been backing up to iCloud and didn't realize it?  Maybe the missing Notes data is linked to a Mail account?  You might be able to reconstruct the data, but it's going to be an uphill battle.
Best of luck.  Make sure to backup more frequently in the future.  There are two types of people in the world; those who have lost data, and those that will lose data.  The only difference is how prepared you are for that event.

Sorry, unless she backup up the new phone before or is using iCloud to save the photos, the photos are gone.

  • Iphoto erased all my pictures from my macbook air. I have no back up, is there any way to recover them? Now it is clear why Maverick is free...

iphoto erased pictures from my macbook air. I have no back-up. Any way to recover them?

    A few things to check:
Do you have more than one user account? If so, are you signed in to the correct account?
Are there multiple iPhoto Libraries? (Hold down the option key, while opening iPhoto) Also, check the Trash, I've heard of iPhoto libraries ending up there for some reason.
If you are certain the library you are looking at is the correct one, try the iPhoto Library First Aid options by, quitting iPhoto (if it is open), then, holding down the command and option keys, launch iPhoto.  Choose the option to Repair Permissions and click Repair.  If that doesn't work, repeat the steps and choose Repair Database. And lastly, if the first two do not solve the problem, try Rebuild Database. *It is very important that you have a backup prior to performing any of the troubleshooting steps.*

  • My daughter deleted her movies that we had purchased from her iPad2. Is there any way to recover them??

We had purchased movies on iTunes and she came up to me asking where they went.. After a while she finally confessed that she had pressed the "x" on the top corner of the movie not know what it would do. Is there any way to get them back without having to pay for them again??

Was the iPad synched to a computer since those movies were purchased? If so, the movies should be in iTunes on the computer and can just be synched back.
If the iPad hasn't been synched, then sorry but you'll probably need to purchase the movies again since the movie studios have not allowed Apple to provide free redownloading. You can contact the iTunes Store and plead for an exception:
    http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/
    but there are no guarantees.

  • While trying to back up my contacts to icloud, I lost them all. Is there any way to recover them?

    Phone: iPhone 4
    iOS: 6.1
    Previous backups: None
I was syncing my contacts to iCloud (went to Settings > iCloud and turned Contacts to "On"), but after the first 3 contacts, it stopped syncing.
I went to Settings > iCloud and turned Contacts to "Off". I was given 2 options: "Keep contacts on iPhone" or "Delete contacts from iPhone".
I selected "Keep contacts". Now all other contacts except those first 3 have been deleted from my phone.
I have no other backups of my iPhone. Is there any way for me to recover the lost contacts?

All media and apps on the device should already be in iTunes on the computer.
If you have forgotten the restrictions passcode, the ONLY option is to restore as new.
Then sync back any media, apps, contacts, etc back to the device.
You can not restore from backup as the restrictions passcode is included in the backup.

  • Firefox crashed while automatically downloadingthe latest version, and when I reopened it, it did not give me the option of restoring my lost tabs. Is there any way to recover them now?

I don't know what more details to offer. The browser crashed, all my open tabs were lost, and when I restarted Firefox, it did not give me the option of restoring the tabs. I really want them back. Is there any way to roll back and recover them?

That gripes me to no end, as well. You might think Mozilla could think this one through, at least to the point of realizing there should be a manual means to recover open tabs NOT restored automatically after a routine FireFox crash.
And if Mozilla cannot stabilize FireFox, it will keep losing users back to IE.
The epidemic of crashes seemed to begin when FireFox "improved" itself with the idea of running 3rd party plugins in a "container", which is still far from reliable. I must run SysInternals Process Explorer at least once per Windows session to keep FireFox from destroying itself.
Aside from FireFox being so unstable, Mozilla should show some concern for users and make the manual restore option very plain from the UI-- such as "RESTORE OPEN TABS LOST SINCE THE LAST (*&&!!! FIREFOX CRASH"
Presumably-- and that may presume too much-- Mozilla leaves the open tabs "log" in place during each update. If that record of open tabs remains untouched from update to update, then why does FireFox screw up, update after update, and routinely fail to recover all tabs?
You might think someone at Mozilla would realize something is wrong. I have let Mozilla "phone home" after each crash, and yet the problem continues.

  • A system recovery was performed on my pc. When I re-installed firefox all my bookmarks had disappeared. This happened more than a wk ago so the solution of recovery for 5 days didn't work. Is there any way to recover them from more than 7 days ago?

On Jun 19 my pc wouldn't load Windows & HP decided to do a system recovery on my pc on Jun 20.
Prior to the system recovery being performed all of my files & programs were burned onto discs.
A few days after the recovery was performed I re-installed Firefox. It was the same day that the newest version of Firefox was released. I was unable to reload the version I was previously using (I believe that it was version 4).
After re-installing Firefox I discovered that I lost all of my Firefox bookmarks.
I thought that the bookmarks would be on the back-up discs but I can't find them on the system recovery files that I loaded onto my pc.
I am using Windows 7 Home Premium. I have a HP G60 series laptop.

    Thanks for the info.
I did find the folder as described above. Under Profiles the sub-directory I found was: t6jyvmtf.default
There are 2 files in that sub-directory:
blocklist - which is an XML document &
bookmarks - which is Firefox document
When I selected bookmarks the document that opened does not contain (to my knowledge) the bookmarks.
The heading for the page is '''''Bookmarks''''' & right underneath that heading is '''Get Bookmark Add-ons'''
Underneath that is a heading '''Bookmarks Toolbar Folder''' with the following under it:
Add bookmarks to this folder to see them displayed on the Bookmarks Toolbar, Getting Started & Latest Headlines
That is followed by the heading '''Mozilla Firefox''' which has the following underneath it:
Help and Tutorials, Customize Firefox, Get Involved & About Us
I checked each of the items that could be selected but none of them had my bookmarks.
I also checked the blocklist XML document - it opened Windows Internet Explorer with what appears to be programming language (although I could be wrong). At the top of the document it says - ?xml version="1.0" ?
    followed by
    - <blocklist xmlns="http://www.mozilla.org/2006/addons-blocklist">
Should I be selecting one of the above to find the bookmarks & I'm just not seeing it?

  • When I turned off the "contacts" feature in iCloud (on my iPhone 4) I lost all my stored phone numbers.  Is there any way to recover them?  Help!!

I turned on the "contacts" feature in the iCloud menu in settings on my iPhone4.  I ended up with a lot useless email addresses from my yahoo contact list that was cluttering up my phone contacts (actual phone numbers.)  I thought I could undo this by turning off the contacts feature in iCloud.  Instead, it wiped ALL of my phone number information in contacts, and left me with just the list of my email addresses, which I don't need.  I am desperate to recover all those phone numbers!  Please help.

    Kilted Tim
    It worked!  Thank you.
Now I just need to delete the email address that are cluttering up my phone contact list.
    Again, thanks.

  • After reinstalling windows I found that my passwords were no longer synced to Firefox Sync is there any way to recover them?

Reinstalled windows and and firefox beta once I did a sync I found that all my passwords were gone

  • Hello, there are approximately three months I uninstalled firefox and lost some documents. Is there any way to recover them, now that I installed again?Thank you.

    most lost are documents...

If you mean files (personal data like bookmarks) in the Firefox profile folder and you had chosen to remove personal data when uninstalling Firefox then that data is lost.

  • Iphoto deleted all my masters, any way to recover them? PLEASE HELP!!

Iphoto deleted all my masters and I cant seem to find them, is there any way to recover them? Iphoto 11 version. The only pictures that are left are some previews and some thumbnails.

    Try the following:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button,
navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.
    If that fails continue with:
Starting over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1. Open the library package like this.
    2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    3. Drag the subfolders of the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window a few at a time.
This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
Note:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • I did a fresh install on my computer, but when I tried to sync, it put the new bookmarks (standard firefox ones) onto the sync data instead. Is there any way to recover my bookmarks?

Like the question says, is there any way to recover them?
I can't pull them off my old install since it was erased.

Lets hope that you did not really erase your old profile, you would have had to go a little out of your way to do that. I've never used Sync but you have to have something to Sync to.
Use the following to see if you have more than one profile or your lost bookmarks
    in the bookmarkbackups folder.
Type about:support into the location bar the click on "Open Containing Folder" that will take you to your current profile. The bookmarkbackups folder has 5 backups (.json files) any of which can be restored with Firefox up through restore bookmarks.
It doesn't sound like the install pulled in your old bookmarks, so continuing ...
Sounds like you created a new profile instead of using your existing profile.
Open your profile folder and go up one level to see if you have multiple
    profiles ...
HELP (Alt+H) --> Troubleshooting information... --> "Open Containing Folder"
(or type about:support into the location bar then click on "Open Containing Folder")
note the filename, then go up one level to see if you have additional profile folders.
Check the dates of places.sqlite (new in Fx3) for update date just before you went to Fx4.
Since it is updated each time you close your session that would be a good place to check.
If you find one then note its filename (the profile name is part of the filename) and
then start the Firefox Profile Manager and open with that profile.
To prevent the problem in the future don't let Firefox start up for you after
downloading and installing a new version. Instead exit the install at that
last point, and restart Firefox in your normal manner.
If you really do want to start with a new profile like the one you have, them look in the bookmarkbackups folder of the other profiles and look particularly at the dates and the size of the .json files to find one that you can restore to your current profile -- restoring is complete replacement of what you have for bookmarks.
