All My Files cannot be opened because the item cannot be found

This just started this morning, before updating from 10.8.2 to 10.8.3: When I click on "All my Files" in the Finder sidebar, I get a little "poof", and nothing appears in the file list area. All other items in the sidebar work OK. If I choose Go > All My Files, I get this message: "The operation can’t be completed because the item can’t be found." This happens in my account, my wife's account, and the Guest User. It worked yesterday!
It gets worse. After clicking "All my Files" from the sidebar, Finder takes over my MacBook Pro! Switching to another desktop immediately returns to the Finder desktop with focus set to Finder. All I can do is "Force Quite Finder", and then things return to normal.
I have tried a few things I found online: clearing out the plist via Terminal: "
cd /Users/***/Library/Preferences ; rm /Users/***/Library/Preferences/com.apple.sidebarlists.plist /Users/***/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist ; killall Finder (where *** is my username)"
", making Spotlight re-index, hard-booting, soft-booting, medium-booting, staring at the screen with a mean look on my face, but alas, nothing seems to work.
Any suggestions? I miss "All my Files"

Back up all data.
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with proxy servers, or with networks that require a certificate for authentication.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, follow the prompts to reinstall the OS. You don't need to erase the boot volume, and you won't need your backup unless something goes wrong. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.

iMac late 2009 3,06GHz Intel Core Duo; 500gb hard drive, 12gb memory. OS X 10.8.5 (Mountain Lion)
'“Install Wacom Tablet.pkg" can't be opened because the Identity of the developer cannot be confirmed.'
I have been trying to install the driver for a Wacom Bamboo Pad. There are several driver packages listed on the website (the device is supplied ready to run with Windows devices) and I have tried tried downloading all the available drivers which apply to my set-up. Some will not open at all and I get a 'Damaged' message on my screen. Of the ones which open, I can download the .dmg and expand it but when clicked it opens as a window with multiple choice of languages and an icon which instructs you to click to open.
If I do this some versions repeat the 'damaged' message but the later ones generate a window saying:-
'“Install Wacom Tablet.pkg" can't be opened because the Identity of the developer cannot be confirmed.' - this is as far as I can get it to go; most frustrating!
I understand that Apple's security updates have recently included an alteration that causes this result, and that there is supposed to be a legal (i.e. Apple sanctioned) workaround to allow files like this to be opened. If this is so, can anyone enlighten me?

    Many Thanks, Kurt.
I knew I'd seen the solution you've provided somewhere - either in MacWorld or MacFormat - but couldn't remember the Gatekeeper bit!
I shall save it somewhere VERY safe now in case this happens again …
You have made an old man very happy and saved me from worrying that senile decay had suddenly set in. (I was 70 last week so you might understand the situation from that.)

Moved iTunes library to an ext hard drive to make space on my int drive... Followed steps from apple.  Now I cannot access my music... It says: "File could not be used because the original file cannot be found.  Would you like to locate it?"
I moved my iTunes library to my external hard drive some time ago and I followed the directions listed here on the apple support page.  It did copy my library and now is on my hard drive... I can open iTunes and use it to sync all of my devices but I would like to play my music... I can see all of my music files but can not play them if I click on an album or song it says the following:  "(file name) could not be used because the original file cannot be found.  Would you like to locate it?"  I click locate but do not know where to go from there?  I need a way to access all files and not to hunt down one at a time on my hard drive... I am pretty sure I deleted the original library to make space on my internal drive which was the reason for moving it.  I have tried and tried to fix it and do not have a lot of time to do so with a one and two year old at my house who do not like it whenI sit down at my computer.  What to do???  Any help is much appreciated!!!

See Make a split library portable. Move all of the bits of the library together in the the correct shape and it should work. Or undo exactly what you did and then start over.
If you're a former Windows user don't try merging two folders together that have the same name by dropping one into the same folders as the other, as that goes badly on a Mac.

  • Photo could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found

I've drawn a blank. This error message gets touched on in places, but I cannot find a direct answer.
    I have never used iPhoto.
After installing and without changing any settings, I got to import folder.
I select my photos folder and begin to import all my photos.
Every single photo of the 3500+ pops up the error:
"The photo "xxx.jpg" could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found"
And I have to press Cancel (and then it imports it anyway) for each of the 3500+ photos.
    What is going on?
I need to employ a chimp to press Cancel thousands of times...
I have not imported, deleted, moved or done anything. Apart from install iPhoto and then IMPORT.
    TIA

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
    Try this
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • Help - photo could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found

I keep getting the following error message for about 10 different photos:  "The photo “IMG_0123.JPG” could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found."  It prompts to cancel or find these photos every time I open iPhoto.  Is there any way I can stop this.  I don't know if I still have the photos and, at this point, I don't care.  I just want it to stop.  Thanks in advance for any advice.

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • HT5129 The photo "claire-66.jpg" could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found.

because of the mobile me switch i can not use my iphoto. i had some albums in my mobile me web gallery and one of them i had deleted the original files so it will not allow me to use my iphoto because it keeps giving me this error message and i can't get rid of it.
"The photo “claire-66.jpg” could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found."
I don't have the original photo anymore so i can not link it to it.

So, your iPhoto Library is now corrupted.
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.

  • Error: this song cannot be played because the original file cannot be found

I recently purchased a new computer and restored my music to the new computer. Although all of my songs are being displayed in the itunes library only half will play. When I try to play the remaining songs I get a message that says "this song cannot be played because the original file cannot be found". I'm at a loss and need help because all of the songs are in the same folder.

    Hi
I've pretty much got exactly the same problem. We've just replaced our old computer with a laptop and I've transferred my iTunes library over but I can't open almost all of my songs as "the original file couldn't be found." I've tried the "locate" prompt but that gives me so many different options, all to no avail. However, I have added a few new CDs since transferring the library to the laptop and they open up without any problems.
Can anyone help? I've got to go through all of this again soon as my daughters both have ipods as well!

  • I deleted iTunes when it said "iTunes could not back up iPhone because the backup could not be saved on the computer"and now it wont let me install it again and keeps saying "itunes cannot be installed because the file cannot be found in the cabinet "

iTunes told me to delete my backup folder when I was having problems syncing my phone to my computer. After that it wouldn't work at all. After trying and trying I deleted iTunes when it said "iTunes could not back up iPhone because the backup could not be saved on the computer"and now it wont let me install it again and keeps saying "itunes cannot be installed because the file cannot be found in the cabinet ". What the **** itunes? Nothing is working!!
I wanted to update my iTunes so I could sync my phone to my computer and update my phones software so I can use the latest apps that need a 4.2 or higher.
This is not fun for me so if anyone knows what I can do to fix this please help. Is it possible to download the "cabinent file" with the lastest iTunes?
    Thank you.

My phone is the iPhone4 and my computer is a Windows Vista

I doubt that corrupt files are the problem. It is more likely a space or permissions issue. Is the hard-drive on which iTunes is stored close to capacity? Do you (or the particular user profile you have logged on with) have the requisite permissions to save to that drive?
Otherwise, do you get an error code? This might point us in the right direction.

I just upgraded my mac book to 10.6.8 and downloaded the new version of itunes. When I try to open it and error message appears saying, "The iTunes Library file cannot be found or created. The default location for this file is in the "iTunes" folder in the "Music" folder."
I have tried a few things but iTunes closes right after i click okay. Anyone know anything?

Look in your Home > Music folder.  There should be an iTunes folder there and it should have a number of files and folders including one called library.itl  You want to guide iTunes to that file.  If you don't see that file or folder then in your next post you will have to be very specific as to what you do see or how you have your iTunes set up because that's where it should be according to default settings.

  • I just bought the MacBook Air and tried to transfer my songs from my external hard drive to my mac. now i cannot open iTunes and it said that the file cannot be found or created.

i just bought a macbook air. ive been transfering all my songs from my external harddrive that i had on my previous laptop for itunes. now that i got them transfered. my itunes wont open. it says "the itunes library file cannot be found or created. the default location for this file is in the itunes folder in the music folder." what do i do!?!

How did you move the music?  You have to do it in a specific way:
iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
do not confuse moving your whole folder and library with moving just media files as in
iTunes for Mac: Moving your iTunes Media folder - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1449
Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music:  Copy the whole iTunes folder and all its subfolders and files intact to the other drive.  Start iTunes with the option key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.

  • ITunes cannot sync to the AppleTV because of a problem on your computer.  The required file cannot be found.

I have two first Gen Apple TV's and a new MAC Book Pro.  I have about 600GB of music and 40GB of photos located on an external hard drive (Western Digital).  In the past, I have not run into any issues when syncing music or photos. Recently, I get an error message "iTunes cannot sync to the AppleTV because of a problem you your computer.  The required file cannot be found."  I noticed this after I added a few folders to my photo folder, which the AppleTV is pointed to for accessing and syncing my photos.  I went to the AppleTV to look to see if the new folders were in the photos, but they were not listed and obviously not syncing from the hard drive to the AppleTV.
For trouble shooting, I disconnected my upstairs AppleTV from iTunes, then reconnected, pointed the AppleTV to the applicable music and phots folders on my external hard drive.  The music synced fine, but the photos did not sync.  I got the same error message.
Does anyone have any advice to what the issue may be??
I read some posts similar to mine and the referenced deleting the iPhoto file cache.  I did not try this as I do not use iPhoto as the source for my photos syncing to my AppleTV's.
    Thanks - Scott1508

Looks like my WD Hard Drive may have an issue.  I pointed the Apple TV to the photos folder on my other WD Hard Drive, which is formatted for MAC and it synced the photos fine.  I had never had an issue with the first WD Hard Drive, but it was never formatted for MAC.
Not sure if this could be the issue???
I am considering getting an Apple Time Capsule (2 TB) for my back up, but also need a second back up for all my music and photos.
Does anyone have advice on moving to the Time Capsule as my main back up and keeping a WD as the secondary back up??

  • IPhoto9: "library could not be opened because the file system of the library's volume is unsupported."

Can please anyone help me with this issue.
After upgrading from iPhoto8 to iPhoto9 my library won't open anymore. I have stored all my pictures on a NAS (Buffalo Link Station Duo). It all worked fine but since upgrading to iPhoto9 I do have the following problem:
When opening iPhoto I receive a message that the library needs to be updated. I assume that iPhoto should just do this sort of automatically in order to upgrade to iPhoto9.However, next message I receive then is
"The library could not be opened because the file system of the library's volume is unsupported."
Apple support so far does not seem to be able to solve my issue. Anyone else having had the same issue and having a solution to this?
Thanks a lot for your help.

    There is no solution.
IPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, saving edits and sharing the photos. While you have been lucky to date, many folks with a library on a NAS found that it worked for a while and then the problems started.
Workaround: Put the Library on a Disk Image formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and store that on the NAS. But the real solution is to use a properly formatted disk for the Library.

Hi Shane.  Not much in the way of thoughts - - but fwiw:
    How is the drive attached?
Can you open large files on the drive with other programs?
Are you running any drive compression or acceleration programs (some drives arrive with these installed)?
Can you reformat the drive and try again?
    Hi Kirby,
I attached the UltraMax Plus with a USB cable. The UltraMax powers the cable so power is not an issue. I can open other files. Also, there is 500GB of files on the drive so I cannot re-format it. Although, I noted I could import the entire Aperture Library. However, I do not want to create a duplicate on my machine because that would be defeating the purpose of the external drive.
    Thanks,
