All my files 'folder'?

I'm confused by the All My Files folder at the top of the Finder sidebar. It says 'all my files' but then doesn't actually seem to show results from all my files! Where exactly is it looking? For example, I can search for images in spotlight including the word 'edward' in the filename. It finds hundreds. However, in All My Files, it finds only 11. What's going on?
The thing is, this All My Files folder seems relatively exciting to me because it brings back the excellent, clear layout of the original Spotlight search (where things are clearly set out in file type 'sections' rather than a crazy long list which you then either have to add extra search criteria too, or sort or whatever (i.e. that's a faff)). However, it's not finding the things I'd like it to find when I click the 'All My Files' button on the top rail. But if I click 'This Mac' then it finds entirely irrelevant images.
Can anyone help me understand what's going on?
Edward

Thanks for your help.
I didn't delete the folder entity itself and my main question is whether there are prerequisite files inside a "All My Files" in any new MacBook Pro?

  • Broken aliases in "All My Files" folder?

    Hi,
Recently, I've encountered an annoying problem with the "All My Files" Folder. Whenever I open a file, say, in pages and save it, it creates a new alias in the folder. After I delete a file from my computer, it stays there and ends up being a broken alias that I can do nothing about.
Does anybody know how I can fix this? It happens for all types of files (images, videos, PDF files, documents) and it's getting really annoying.
    Thanks.

I found this post from samurai cc and it worked!
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3238831?start=0&tstart=0
Had the exact same problem with 5 files. I managed to get rid of these unwanted files by:
    - having the finder window viewed and seeing the unwanted file
    - opened up Spotlight and typed the file names of each of the files.
For some odd reason whilst typing the name of the files in Spotlight the file dissappeared from All My Files in Finder.
    Hope this helps you guys.

It should be back by opening a Finder window, going to Finder menu (on the menu bar) > Preferences > Sidebar, and ticking "All My Files". It will show up in the Finder sidebar

  • All my files folder suddenly empty, what to do?

all my files folder suddenly empty, what to do?

    Kiara19,
What do you see in Finder when you try to open such a folder. If you see a big blue folder icon, then there is something mixed up with your user privileges.
Highlight the folder, and press CMD+I to get the info window.
At the bottom of that window is a section called "Sharing & Permissions". In there you'll see some users and the Privilege associated with that user. If you have the Privilege of 'Read only' then you need to change this to 'Read & Write'.
To do this, click on the closed lock-icon at the bottom right of the info window. You'll be asked to enter your administrator username and password (mostly these are the same as your login credentials). After that, you can change the privilege of the user to 'Read & Write'.
Before closing the info window, also tick the gear-icon on the bottom of the info window and select 'Apply to enclosed items...'. Depending on how many files and subfolders there are in this folder, it might take some time to change all privileges.
After all changes are done you can close the info window, and all your files should be visible to you again.
I hope this solved your issue.

  • What files are in the "All My Files" folder in an iMAC? I accidentally deleted all files in this folder. Any way to recover them?

Please help. I need to recover some important files.

    Matt Clifton wrote:
I've had good luck with Prosoft's Data Rescue. You can download a trial to see what files are recoverable, and then purchase the software to recover. You will need an external drive to recover the files to.
    Matt
And what ever you do don't use that hard drive AT ALL until you get your files back, if that's even possible. Even though the files may still be there on your hard drive the file system sees the space they occupy as availble to write to. And OS X WILL overwrite those files if you use the drive in any way.

  • How do i view all my files again?

I was playing with the different display configurations and options in the Finder trying to figure out what suited me best.  I right-clicked on "All My Files" and there was an option to add a search bar to the file.  I clicked on this to see what happened and all the files were gone and the full search bar was at the top of the page with all the filters (like 3 or 4 lines worth) displayed.  I went back to All My Files, right-clicked again and there was an option to Remove Search Bar (or something like that I dont remember exactly).  When I clicked on this the search bar was still displayed but without all the lines of filters and I still can not see any of my files.  I right-clicked again on All My Files and there was no longer anything in the menu about the search bar, the right-click menu magically changed from four items to three.  I have looked at all the view options and tried to figure out what happened but I am at a loss as to what I did that made All My Files search only (or at least that's what seems to have happened).  This obviously doesnt stop me from being able to view the files through other routes (i.e. clicking on Documents in the Favorites sidebar, selecting Computer from the Go tab, clicking on Macintosh HD on the desktop) but is still quite annoying.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey thanks for the advice but I might have failed to explain my problem correctly.  The sidebar is still there and I have manipulated it several times, exactly the way you just explained, in my attempt to troubleshoot this problem.  Initially, I right-clicked on All My Files in the sidebar and then selected the option, third out of the four selectable options, that had something to do with searching (I cant remember the exact wording). My original post goes into a little more detail but long story short it removed all the files from the window pane and put a search bar at the top with about four lines of filters.  It looked like this
I then right-clicked on All My Files again to try and correct the change and the third selectable option, still out of four, said something about removing the search bar (I dont remember exactly but either way it had something to do with the search bar).  I selected this option and the window pane changed to look like this
(I was able to replicate, in the first picture, what the folder looked like when I first selected the Search Bar item by clicking on the + sign in the top right hand corner next to Save)
This is the screen I get everytime I try and manipulate the All My Files folder now no matter what I have done.  On top of that, the All My Files right-click menu only has three options now instead of four.  The search option magically disappeared after the second time I clicked on it. I'll add a screenshot of the right-click menu just for the heck of it.
Hopefully the pictures helped me to better explain myself this time.  Again, any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

  • "All My Files" won't open, crashes Finder

Every time I attempt to open the "All My Files" folder, finder crashes and I am unable to do anything on my computer without relaunching finder.
Anyone seen something like this happen or know a fix?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • "All my Files" glitch

    Hi there,
I've recently been unable to access the "all my files" folder in finder. I can access everything else. When I click on "all my files", it animates like a file is opening, but does nothing and no files show. Then, when I try to click on anything other than finder, such as another app, I can't get out of finder. I can't do anything else until I force quit finder.
When I open finder and use "go" to try to access "all my files", it tells me that the operation can't be completed because it can't be found. But this method doesn't lock me in finder and I can use other apps without force quiting finder.
    Please help!

  • Hide files from the "all my files"

    hello,
i have certain photos and videos which i do not want to be shown in the "all my files" folder, how to do i hide these specific files?
can i make a rule for that folder not to include files which are located in a specific path?

Not certain, but try adding the enclosing folder to the Privacy tab of Spotlight.
You can't set a criteria such as, "not in folder X" as that criteria isn't implemented.

can anyone help with retrieving My Library in Itunes and Itunes store - having updated Itunes and Icloud on 24 September 13, my computer failed and I lost all my files which were eventually backed up to an Emergency Backup.  my computer is now working again and I have down loaded Itunes and transferred all the files from my Emergency Backup.  Non of the music went back into Itunes, so I had to find these files and manually moved them to Itunes.  The music is now in Itunes, but I no longer have the folder named My Library, which I think is the reason my Ipad, ipod no longer sync any additional music I have added to Itunes. Does anyone know how to rectify this please.
    Many thanks.  Crusey

iTunes expects files and folders to be in very specific locations.  When you start iTunes it looks for a file called library.itl which is in the iTunes folder.  It then uses all the references in that file which tell it where all your media files are located to build up the view you normally see.  Probably you moved the library file so iTunes cannot find it and it will make a default one which is empty.  When you plug in your iPod it isn't recognizing the library since it is not the same one to which you synced last.
Simply put, you need to undo all your file moves.  Not as eaily done as stated but since I cannot quite see from here exactly what you spent an hour doing last night it will be up to you.  Did you make a backup before doing all this?

  • Find all music files and move to one folder for all of family to access, find all music files and move to one folder for all of family to access

I seem to have music files in various places on my laptop, on my husbands computer and our main imac.  What we want to do is put all music on imac so when each of us logs on we have the same files availabe in itunes, but we logon seperately so we can have different playlists and checked music. So here is what I want to do:
Find all music files on each computer seperately and put everything in one folder one each computer, so three folders total to start...
Move my husbands itunes library and my itunes library from each of our laptops to our main imac, making one huge itunes folder
I want to store our music on an external hard drive, which I have, so I have a full library for backup purposes.
I want all future music downloaded on any of our laptops to transfer to the main imac computer, again to keep one main library
I want all video, apps, books, etc on each laptop to be available in one file on my main imac also so we can all use them
So mainly I want to organize, organize, organize and put everything in one spot so things don't get all messed up and some items are only accessible to me some times and not my husband or vice versa.  We want to share everything we can so we don't have to pay twice. I have read many instuctions, but nothing seems to be helping me and was hoping someone could...
    Thanks, l

I am totally running into the same issue as well. On top of that, when syncing to my iPhone, it took some of the tracks from my iphone and recopied them to the iTunes library, as new files, so now I have a ton of duplicates, and tons of tracks that can't find the iTunes folder, so they have the little "!" next to them.
It would be really nice to have someone answer this question. I didn't think, moving my iTunes library to a bigger external hard drive would have caused all this madness
