All my hard drive is used up already!

I tried migrating my MacBook info to my new MacBook Pro. After 5 hours, it told me it couldn't migrate some things. I quit migration and decided I could try it again later. There is nothing on my hard drive except for the applications that came with the computer right now. My disk space is 120 GB and I only have 20 GB left right now!!! Is there anyway I can start over and redo the system and hard drive?

You can use the Recovery System in your MacBook Pro to wipe the internal drive clean and start over with a fresh install of your operating system. Very likely, you're coming from a HD to a much smaller Solid State Drive (SSD) so, once Setup Assistant starts on the first boot of the new OS installation, pay attention to the space that will be consumed as you pick things to be transferred. And try to avoid packing the SSD full of your stuff; it operates a lot better if it has free space, the more the better.

See pondini about mixing data and backups.. but remember this.. the TC has no way to back itself up and TM cannot backup files on the TC. Anything not backed up on the TC will be lost at some future point.

Something is using up all my hard drive space and is under 'other' on about this mac..
When I use omi disk sweeper or grand perspective they don't show anything up as using 420GB lol.. So yeah any idea how I can find these hidden files?!

ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install the app you downloaded in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:

I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.

Have a lot of music... Any way to keep it off my hard drive yet use it?

I am quite new to the mac family, and am just getting my computer set up to my liking. I was wondering if it would be possible for me to keep my 12,000 songs on my external hard drive and use them from there, instead of putting them onto my relatively small (compared to my external hard drive) 250GB hard drive on my mac. When i used to use windows, whether I wanted it this way or not, It would "copy" all the files into itunes, but they wouldn't actually be stored there. Only the names would appear, and I would still have to plug in the ext. hard drive if i actually wanted to play the files. is there anything like this for mac?
also, since I have so much music, and download music so often and in large amounts, I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations on how to keep an organized music file, and a way of downloading and putting them into itunes so that I can actually keep track of all the music?
Any help will be greatly appreciated!

yes. i would ALWAYS let iTunes do the moving lest it loses track of where the files are stored.

also, when I've done that, and have everything on the external hard drive, I can go clean up all the music files still left on my computer.... then I press option and drag everything back to itunes? what will that do for me?
as i mentioned, this will make iTunes reference the path to the original location (your external HD) but will not copy the files physically.
and how will I be able to work with my music and update it after that?
you mount the external HD before launching iTunes. now you can do whatever as if the files where on your startup disk.

Can I put my library on an external hard drive and use it between two computers? I have two MBP; I will refer to one as computer A and to the other as computer B. I would like to be able to plug in my external hard drive, boot up iTunes, and if there were any changes made to the library previous to its last time accessed on this compluter, they show up on that computer, regardless of being imported on the other.
A hypothetical example: I import three albums called 1, 2, and 3 on computer A over a week or so. I take the external hard drive and plug it into computer B. The entire library which was visible on A, is visible on B, including albums 1, 2, and 3.
Is this possible? If so, what files need to be copied onto the external? I'm trying some different combinations, trial and error basically. Hopefully someone knows and can answer before I mess up my library. I also want to do this to free up space on my computer. All importing will be done from disc.

iTunes/Preferences/Advanced : point your iTunes to the new location of the Library.
Set "Share on local network" in the Sharing tab, and you or everyone on the local network can play your music.
You make a backup first of the Library.
Move the follwing to the new location:
/Users/your username/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music

I used a 3rd party program called copytrans http://www.copytrans.net/ that is not free to move my library from my ipod to my itunes library when I had to start from scratch. After that happened I started backing up my music that purchased from the itunes store to a dvd so I would always have it if things went south. Now I always backup my purchased digital music to an optical disc just in case plus everythng else I have is on retail cd's so I can just rebuild my library from scratch again if I have to. You should also regularly back up your itunes media folder to another disc so your entire library will be backed up just in case you should lose your program drive.

Yes, you have WD software installed REMOVE IT !!
WD has warned its customers about their huge mistake that their software doesnt work on Mavericks and causes data loss.
(also dont use WD drives anymore)

Internal hard drive for use as scratch disk

Am running OS 10.4.11 on a dual core 2.3 Ghz PowerPC G5. Want to install a 2nd internal hard drive for use as a scratch disk w/ FCP and for my media files, etc. Given that I can only accomodate an SATA I drive w/ 150 Gbps transfer rate what might some decent choices be for a 500 Gb to 1 TB drive suited for video (and a PowerPC G5)? I'll also be adding an external drive for backup if anyone has any suggestions.

Thanks for the recommendations. I had been looking at the Hitachi CinemaStar series but you have to reset the drive to SATA 1 for use w/ a G5 PowerMac. Resetting the drive, according to Hitachi, can only be done on a PC which I don't have access to. And I think that holds true for all their drives that are not strictly SATA 1.

Perfect Hard Drive To Use With Time Machine?

Has anyone found out what's the perfect External Hard Drive to use with Time Machine?
I have experience with a few of WD's My Book models (Essential, Pro and Studio). The problem with all of them is that they automatically keep switching themselves off (spin down) and on (spin up) throughout the day, in an effort to save power. But it's actually quite annoying. The My Book drive will automatically turn itself off, and then turn back on again within the space of one minute. Also, going to use Spotlight (even if you've excluded Time Machine Backups from being indexed) will automatically prompt the My Book drive to turn back on, which introduces a small delay to using Spotlight.
Does anyone make an External Hard Drive, with a Firewire 400 or 800 connection, that stays on ALL the time and doesn't automatically make decisions about when it should spin down or spin up?

I'am using a 500Gb Freecom Pro Hard Drive connected on USB via my Cinema Display. I so forget about it that I often forget to disconnect it from my laptop before leaving the office... Never complained about it
Btw, it does not implements the energy saver Auto turn off/on feature which I don't need cause the time it could mostly be really useful is by night. As it stops when I disconnect the USB and start again when I connect it back.. this is perfect to me.
I must say I'm quite happy with every Freecom product I bought and this one certainly don't break the rule

Hi! I have an external hard drive on which I have transferred my iTunes library (just mine - not others). I have also a folder containing just films (some but not all of which are in iTunes too) Everything has been working just fine until yesterday I noticed that Time Machine was not including the external hard drive in back up as it wasn't formatted. So I have moved everything back to the Mac hard drive and and ready to format the external hard drive - but understand that if I do the contents cannot be opened from a windows laptop ... is that right? Is there are format I could choose that would allow Time Machine to back up and allow Windows to open as well (the idea being that I take the external hard drive with me on holidays etc!!) ok - I understand. I have managed so far to format the drive (on windows) to exFAT file system - which apparently works with both Windows and Mac - but you're correct - it will not be included in time machine backup as I have checked the back up files and Samsung is not showing. Reckon I'm onto having to buy yet another portable hard drive just for windows - or of course buy myself a new mac book!! Can I ask you please - does the drive have to be clear of everything before I change the format - or can I change it with the files still in there? If your Mac is off then start up. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the Option key until the Mac and Windows Disks show up. Then click on the Mac disk and the arrow below it. After it boots up in Mac then go to System Preferences>Startup Disk and select your Mac partition as the Startup disk.
If you are in Windows then look for the Boot Camp icon on the taskbar. It will look like a gray box sitting on one corner. One of the options when you click it is to restart in Mac OS. After it boots up in Mac then go to System Preferences>Startup Disk and select your Mac partition as the Startup disk.

Clone Lion using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue button.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the Lion startup volume.

Our iTunes guru Terence Devlin advises the following:
1. Quit iTunes
2. Drag the iTunes folder from your internal hd - located in ~/Music folder - to your external hd. DO NOT delete the original one from your internal hd... yet!
3. When the transfer is complete, press and hold the Option(alt) key and fire up iTunes.
4. A "Choose iTunes Library" window will come up. Click on the "Choose Library" button.
5. Navigate to where the iTunes folder is located in the external hd.
6. Within the iTunes folder, select the iTunes Library file and click Choose...
That's it. iTunes will now display all your playlists, songs, movies, podcasts etc. At this point, should you wish, you can delete the iTunes folder from the internal hd to free up space.
