All my music dissappeared, I am not a dumb or non technical person, read me

I have been using my Ipod 40gb for over a year with no problems. THe only thing I did out of the ordinary was set up my Grandparents Ipod photo and load a bunch of cds on it that they wanted to listen too this past week. I go to plug in my own ipod tonight and all the music is gone and the drive says 37.11gb free, I had over 20gb of songs on the ipod and it is set to manual management. Not a terrible loss for me, I can reload all the music and retag the tracks I fixed in the ipod over the last year. But *** would cause this considering I did not update it or format it or change anything? I was planning on adding a new album which I just added to my now empty Ipod. I am also curious if I have to worry about this happening again?
I know no one else had access to it or altered it in any way. It was just on my charger on the desk like always when I am not using it. Very confusing that all my music would just randomly dissappear with the ipod showing no sign of malfunction.
