All my preferences lost!

Hello,
I recently was doing some cleaning up of my documents and I deleted my library folder. So, when I restarted, I lost everything. I tried to go into the recycling bin and my time machine backup, but not everything was fixed. Now, I lost my iWeb site, and I have no idea how to get it or where its located, and all my buddies in iChat no longer show their real names (so now I don't know who is who). There may be some other issues, but I have yet to find them.

In Leopard, the Library folder has a no delete ACL on it, so I surmise you took extraordinary measures to delete it and it wasn't an accident. If restoring the Library folder from the TM backup didn't restore everything, then you'll have to live with that. I don't do iWeb stuff, but suggest that you post to the iWeb forum for that issue.

  • USER PREFERENCES LOST!  HELP!

I renamed my user icon (the little house icon in the finder menu). When I restarted my laptop all of my preferences were lost. This included my screensaver, bookmarks for Sarfari, settings for my Mail account, widgets and more. All the preferences are gone. I tried renaming the folder back to what it was but no luck. Things really seem to be mixed up now. HELP.
Is there anyway to revert / restore back to my old settings???
    THNAK YOU IN ADVANCE!
    powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Thank you so much for you response! Although the article didn't completely solve my problem it did lead me to the solution. I trashed the preference files of the new USER and dragged and dropped the old ones in and BINGO.....
Can't thank you enough......... My life is back in order.

  • Preferences lost when I reset

It seems like everytime my computer is turned off and on, or at least whenever updated, all my preferences are lost. My dock is reset, my Firefox bookmarks and settings return to default, and my AIM preferences as well. Is there some setting that causes this to happen or is it because of the updates I installed? Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

I reinistalled the OS and everything works great now.

  • System Preferences Lost upon Restart / Reboot

    Hi.
I wonder if anyone is able to help me with a mildly annoying problem.
I have an issue with my 24" iMac in that when it is shut down or rebooted, upon startup some (but not all) system preferences appear to be lost.
    Typically this will include:
Mouse Preferences - button 3 and 4 preferences are lost, but not button 2
Firewall - permissions for certain programs (Vuze, for example) are lost
I have googled and googled and I can't find why this might be. If anyone could suggest anything I'd be grateful.
    Thanks.

I'm having the same problem. Sometimes after a system startup I notice that some of my preferences are lost and things revert back to their default values. This can affect the Dock, Finder, iTunes, Screen Saver hot corners, etc. Each time the problem occurs it seems to be a different set of preferences lost and it doesn't happen all the time. For instance, the dock might move from my preferred location at the left side of the screen to the default location at the bottom of the screen. And sometimes all the icons that I normally have in my dock disappear and the default list is shown instead.
I have this problem on a Mac Pro running 10.5.6 but it has been occurring ever since I upgraded to Leopard. However, this problem does not happen on any of the other Macs that I own.

  • I want to duplicate all my preferences on a second iBook Mac G4.

I have an old desktop Mac G4. I have used Firefox for many years. I acquired an iBook G4. I had Firefox all set up on it but recently did something foolish and lost all my preferences. I've managed to re-import my bookmarks from the desktop computer to the laptop computer (that's relatively easy) but I cannot find any way to export or import preferences, including saved passwords, cookies, configuration &c from the desktop machine to the laptop. I'm sure there has to be a way to do this but it's not obvious.

Drag the songs from the iTunes window to the Sparq2 on the desktop.

All of the data should be on your computer, simply sync it back.
If the update was done via iTunes on the computer, the first step in the process is a backup of the device.

I have CC and while attempting Light Effects, the Light Effects Layer will appear in the layers panel, but the option bar will not appear and neither will the Properties panel. All my preferences are set correct, and my computer has a compatible video card and RAM. Please help!
I tried to delete the layer attempt again. I am in a Photoshop class, but the work is all online, so all my teacher is going to do is send me to this site. I am trying to edit a photo for this class, and without this working, i go to filter>render>light effects. the bar and panel will pop up for about 2 seconds, then disappear. How do i get the options bar and properties panel to display?

I was about to suggest resetting LE from the Workspace drop-down top right corner, but if you can't see the Options Bar, I guess that is not going to happen.  The normal Tool reset is grey out for LE, so it might be a case of resetting Preferences.
    Reset Preferences
Windows — Hold down Shift Ctrl Alt immediately after starting Photoshop
Mac — Hold down Shift Cmd Opt immediately after starting Photoshop

  • Since the FF8 update, all bookmarks were lost and none of the recommended methods for restoring lost bookmarks work; I always get "Unable to process to backup file" even though the backup .json files still exist

Since a FF8 update, all bookmarks were lost and none of the recommended restore methods work, even though I have been able to find the backup ".json" files; I continually get "Unable to process the backup file" for all methods of importing or restoring the bookmarks from the .json files. As others note, I can also no longer add any new bookmarks to my now empty bookmarks tab. My profile has not changed, so that's not the problem. This is really a pain.

Did you try to delete the file places.sqlite to make Firefox rebuild the places.sqlite database file from a JSON backup?
A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

  • HT203167 I had a glitch in my phone and all information was lost?

I had a glitch in my phone and all information was lost. I even had to rename my phone. I still use the same email and have ALL of the receipts sent to that email of previous song purchases. I would like them back. Apple says I have to repurchase?

Depending upon what country that you are in (and whether they are still in the store) you might be able to re-download them via the Purchased tab in the iTunes store app on your phone. If you are not in a country where music can be re-downloaded then do you have a copy of them on your computer's iTunes or on your backup of your downloads that you can use to resync them ? If not then only iTunes Support could potentially grant you a re-download : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then Purchases, Billing & Redemption
You should be able to re-download apps via the Purchased tab in the App Store app, and ibooks via the Purchased tab in the ibookstore in the iBooks app.

  • Where does Mac Lightroom 4.4 store all its preferences?

I have a problem importing video into Lightroom 4.4 on Mac OS X 10.9.4, and the problem goes away if I test with a brand new user account.  I'm trying to recreate this virgin state in my main user account by deleting all the Lightroom preferences.  But so far I haven't been able to ferret out all the places Lightroom stores preferences.  Here's what I'm deleting so far (all relative to my home directory):
    "Library/Application Support/Adobe" folder
"Library/Preferences/com.adobe.Lightroom4.plist" file (actually tried all com.adobe.* files)
    "Pictures/Lightroom" directory (catalog, etc)
    "Library/Caches/com.adobe.Lightroom4" directory
    "Library/Caches/Adobe" directory
Lightroom menu => Preferences => File Handling => Video Cache Settings => "Purge Cache" button
Even after deleting all that, Lightroom menu => Preferences => General items still persist (e.g. the "Automatically check for updates" checkbox and the two completion sounds), my recent catalogs in File => Open Recent still persist, and my video import problem still persists.  I believe I've covered all the files listed here, so there must be some other place where Lightroom is storing preferences.  What am I missing?  Thanks in advance!

Thanks John R. Ellis, but I used that reference and deleted all the preference files listed there (see original post).  Some preferences persist even still.  I believe there must be some files missing from that list?  Or there's some other way that my preferences are sticking around?
I'll try to change the title to be more clear about that.  Thanks in advance for any insight.
(--edit-- I can't change the title of the original post...)

  • All iBooks content lost after transfer to new iPad.

I recently purchased an iPad 2 and after moving all the contents from my old iPad I have lost everything in iBooks. There is the option to redownload one purchased one but all samples are lost. More importantly though all of my PDFs have disappeared.
I would assume that they are still somewhere in the last backup from my original iPad. Is there any way to retrieve them from the backup?

Open iBooks, tap Library if you happen to have a book open, otherwise tap Store (upper left corner). When the store app opens, tap Purchased (lower left). You should be able to redownload any books you previously purchased through iBook.

  • Saving all your preferences?

I saw an article on this a while back but can't seem to find it anywhere. Isn't there a way to save all your preferences at once? Print presets, dictionary additions, etc.? Seems like it was an article about saving your version of InDesign (your preferences that is) on a USB drive or something.....
    Thanks, Phyllis

    Copy the user profile.
It used to be a little simpler, you could save just the Application Data\Adobe\Indesign\[version] folder, but since CS3 some stuff is also stored in the Local Settings\Application Data\Adobe\Indesign\[version] folder. I suppose you could copy just those two if you like, or the parent Adobe folders on each path to get all applications. Pick your poison.
