All my previous events disappear when I import new photos into iphoto?

Each time I import photos from my Canon digital camera into my iphoto, the new import is the only event that shows. I can't access any menues or events in iphoto; when I open iphoto from the dock, only my most recent event opens. To import photos from my camera, I open iphoto, connect the USB cord to my camera and the USB port on my computer, and click import. The next time I open my iphoto, nothing is there except my last import. When this happened a few weeks ago, I looked at the discussions and found out how to rebuild the library, which I did, but I can't do that every time I import photos. What is happening? What is wrong with my iphoto?

It sounds like you have a damaged database.
Try these in order - from best option on down...
1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
As to why you have repeated corruption - Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
If you're running a Managed library, then it's the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing
If you're running a Referenced Library, then you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced and iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing.

  • Import new photos into iphoto, browser not seeing recent "last import"

I use several web based applications that ask to upload photos. I go into browse and iphoto and for some reason it won't pull the last imported photos - it is as if the browser is caching the old events and last import. When I exit FireFox and iPhoto and restart my machine it will see them. I must be missing a plug in or something - any ideas?????

Keywords are preserved if you use either the Import iPhoto Library or Show iPhoto Browser methods.

If you are seeing your photos in "Last Import", the photos are somewhere in your library. Perhaps the dates are wrong, and you do not see the photos arranged by date, where you expect them to be.
Select one of the photos on "Last Import", then ctrl-click it and select "Show in Event".  That will take you to the event in event view.

When I imported my photos to iphoto 11 from an external drive they were no longer chronologically organized in folders by year & month. Instead, they all went into one folder within a 2011 folder. In fact, it randomly changed the dates & years of all the files so I can't even manually organize them now.

Are you sure that iPhoto is the app for you?
iPhoto is designed to help you organise your Photos, but you seemed focussed on organising files.
The idea is simple: organise them as you want in the iPhoto Window. As I said above, as you never access the files on the HD then how iPhoto stores them is of no relevance. (It's by date of import BTW).
Where are you seeing these changed dates? In the iPhoto Window ? Somewhere else?

  • Problem with importing scanned photos into iPhoto

I have an Epson scanner that scans photos into the JPEG format. However, when I try to import these photos into iPhoto I am told that the file format is incompatible with iPhoto. This is odd since photos in iPhoto ARE in JPEG format.
    Can anybody help?
Many thanks in advance for any assistance.
    Sir Leicester

Did you scan these photos as grayscale b/w photos? If so that's the reason. iPhoto does not support the grayscale mode when it has the *+Dot Gain 20%+* profile added to it and that's what scanners use.
Rescan all b/w images as color and they will be accepted by iPhoto. Or you can download the Automator workflow application, Convert to JPG and Embed sRGB profile, from Toad's Cellar and drop the files onto the application. This will batch convert them to jpegs in the RGB mode with the sRGB IEC61966-2.1 color profile.

  • How can I import newer photos into 7.1.5?

My daughter burned a cd of photos from her version of iPhoto "09", 8.1.2 for me.
I am using 7.1.5 and iPhoto will not allow me to import the photos into my library. When I try this there is an alert saying I can't import this version - then my only option is to quit iPhoto!
HELP, is there a work around???

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Try the following:
1 -open the CD by clicking on it.
2 - open the folder titled "Library" by double clicking on it.
3 - drag the "Originals" folder to the Desktop.
4 - launch iPhoto and drag the Originals folder from the Desktop into iPhoto's open window.
This will import just the original photo files in the same Rolls as they were in your daughter's library. You WILL NOT get any of the keywords, titles or modified versions of those photos.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
NOTE: this is not the same as routinely backing up your entire iPhoto library folder to protect your photos. It only protects the loss of your organizational efforts that the database file contains.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

  • I am unable to import new photos in iPhoto 11. Perhaps I should just reinstall from iLife disk? Will it affect my photos in any way?

    Hello,
I have iPhoto 11 installed on my MacBook. I am now unable to import new photos using USB or by plugging the camera directly into the laptop. Never had that probem before with this camera. Perhaps just reinstall iPhoto from the iLife disk?

    Hello Terence,
Okay I will try reformating the camera's card. However all is well when I export photos to my iMac at home or onto my iPad.
If your suggestion does not work should I try reinstalling iPhoto from the iLife disk? If so, how do I go about doing that or is there a website somewhere explaining this?

  • Suddenly can't import any photos into iPhoto!

Suddenly and inexplicably, I cant import any photos into my iPhoto program. iPhoto has worked fine for years. Now, all of a sudden, no matter how I try to import them (either from my desktop, or from my digital camera), I get the error message: Couldn't create: /Volumes/name of external drive/iPhoto Library/2006/08/21/name of photo. When I click "OK" on the error message dialogue box, I then get the error message "Unreadable files: 1 The following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data)." I am reasonably certain that of the 250 or so J-Peg photos I'm presently trying to import, from 2 different cameras, ALL of them can't be corrupt.
First, I tried repairing my disk permissions on my G4. Then, I tried reinstalling iLife 5.0.2. Then I tried reinstalling the OSX 10.3.9 combo pack, and iPhoto 5.0.4. Then I tried again repairing my disk permissions with disk utility. All proved useless to solve the problem.
I also tried dragging my iPhoto preferences to the trash. But I found to my horror that this action completely obliterates all of my iPhoto albums and photo groupings. I did not attempt to import any new photos once I discovered this, as I was fearful doing so might render my loss of my albums permanent. So I retrieved my old preferences from the trash, thus saving my albums and groupings, but also keeping the original importing problem.
What can I do to fix this importing problem without obliterating my albums and groupings? Lots of work has gone into the grouping and categorizing of my albums and photos. Though it would be easy to reimport all of my photos, I would not want to begin to take the time to recreate all of my albums and groupings from scratch. Is there any way these groupings can be preserved? If not, there should be! It's idiotic to think that Apple might not consider all of the time the grouping of albums and songlists represents to the typical user of iPhoto or iTunes.
Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. Cheers!

I've found a solution to this problem, thankfully. But it didn't come via rebuilding the iPhoto library.
I didn't want to to a manual rebuild of my original iPhoto library, since I was cautioned that it would involve losing my albums and all notations and filings I'd made concerning my photos. Before I first tinkered with the library, I made a backup copy of the original-defective library onto another external drive. Then I did one more complete "automatic rebuild" of the original/defective library, and found to my horror that the library wouldn't even open any more. It would send up an error message when I'd try to click on it's icon to open the library.
I went back to the backup copy of my iPhoto library (containing all of my albums, groupings, and etc.) and did what I hadn't thought to do in the first place: I simply attempted to import photos (my original difficulty) into this backup iPhoto library. It worked perfectly!!! All photos imported into this backed up copy as if it were the original. And now that I have trashed my "original" and totally defective former iPhoto library, this backup copy is now my new iPhoto library.
I guess whatever was wrong with the old library was shaken out just by making a backup copy. I'm afraid that's about as technical an explanation as I can offer. But maybe doing the same process will help another of you suffering from a similar problem with importing photos. Anyway, a hearty thanks to everyone who responded to this original query of mine. Mac users are truly the best!!! Cheers!

  • When I import my photos into lightroom 4 they all turn to black and white...what is going on?

When importing the photos are color...but when I go to the develop module the all start going to black and white...before my eyes!

sounds like you either got a black and white preset selected in the 'Apply During Import' section of the Import Dialog (over on the right), or you've created a default setting in Develop. For the first, make sure no Develop preset is selected. For the second hold down your Alt key on PC, or Option key on Mac in the Develop Module. The Reset button will turn into 'Set Default...' on the bottom of the right panel. This will open a dialog box. Choose the left button that says 'Restore Adobe Default Settings'.

  • When I import selected photos from iPhoto I am getting double images in Aperture...why???

Does anyone know why I am getting double images when I import from iPhoto to Aperture?

I found this under Aperture help:
Sometimes you get two copies of an image imported from iPhoto, and the pair is stacked. Though this might surprise you, the reason is very simple. Whenever you edit in iPhoto, it preserves the original and makes the changes to a copy. When you import to Aperture, you get both the original and the copy from iPhoto.
If you want the originals only, here's a quick way to remove the copies by using the "iPhoto-edited" keyword:
Click any image in the project to select it.
    Choose Edit > Select All.
    Choose Stacks > Unstack.
In the browser's search box (to the right of the magnifying glass), type: iPhoto-edited
This will cause only iPhoto-edited images to appear in the Browser. Now you can relocate or delete them as you please.
Note: If you have manually edited the contents of the iPhoto Library or have used any third-party software that sub-manages or attempts to minimize the size of the iPhoto Library (by deleting originals, for example) then you need to exercise caution. Rather than delete the files immediately, consider temporarily storing them in another project until you're sure you have everything you want to keep in the main project.
    Good luck.

  • Importing certain photos into iPhoto since QT upgrade crashes iPhoto

I have about 2,000 photos (jpg) that were all scanned in and now when I try importing them into iPhoto is crashes. It worked fine in QT 7.1.2 but with the 7.1.3 upgrade iPhoto now crashes. Apple is now aware of the problem (sent them an example photo and they can reproduce) The work-around suggested is open the photo in preview, do a file save as (jpg) then import into iPhoto. This works, BUT for 2,000 photos it is not really feasible. Not sure if anyone has an idea how to get around this. Thought of applescript, but preview is not scriptable.

I don't have a solution but can confirm that I an experiencing the same problem.
I am trying to import a bunch of jpeg files from a folder on my desktop. They are a mix of unedited files and some which have been edited in Photoshop Elements 3. As soon as iPhoto hits one of the edited files it crashes.
I have sent the crash log to Apple each time it happens and have send a bug report to them. I would suggest everyone who is experiencing this does the same in the hope that it may highlight the issue sooner rather than later.
Reverting back to previous versions of software is a retrograde step - Apple's software should "just work" - this is why I switched.
