All of a sudden...mail broke!

A few days ago, mail started hanging (judging from the Activity window) on the "Fetching new mail" window. If I hit the stop sign, it then hangs on "stopping." If I try to quit, it doesn't -- I have to forcibly quit it.
This happens with multiple accounts, and on different servers. And...it's intermittent.
Any ideas what I can do to "reset" the app? I've already tried rebuilding the mail boxes.

Since your mail settings are correct for the AT&T account, the only thing I would question is the port numbers on the bluehost account; but if it works, there's no point in changing it. Because of that and the problem being intermittent, I would guess that it's a temporary server problem on the provider's end, since it can happen to anyone at any time, and probably has.
If you want to try it, you can move your com.apple.mail.plist file to the Desktop, then restart Mail and *do not* let it import any accounts; instead setup your accounts again and let it find the mail folders for them, then try sending and receiving to see if there's any improvement. After that, you can delete the preferences file on the Desktop. Of course, I'd write down all the info you need from your current preferences before you remove that file and try this.

I would just love to be able to write all my emails offline and save to drafts/Outbox and then just connect to send and check emails then disconnect again.

HT5767 My mail all of a sudden would not allow me to delete messages in my inbox saying, "couldn't be copied to "Messages" because an item with the same name already exists." Found it duplicates the message I wanted deleted in trash.

Still using the @mac.com mail address and up to date on everything, but have not gone to Maverick. All of a sudden Mail wouldn't let me delete. Said that title of email was already in trash. And sure enough it was. Clicking on the help button on the message gets Nothing.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

TS3276 Mail account set up. Can not receive mail-Everything is green in Connection doctor but when checking activity it shows stop signs. Was able to receive mail until last week then all of a sudden stopped receiving mail but no changes were made.

My mail account has been set up and working to send and receive mail for several months. All of a sudden I can not receive mail. The connection doctor shows all green lights. No changes have been made and nothing has been changed on preferences on IMAP and SMTP. I can send mail. My other accounts all send and receive mail. When you click on activity the list shows stop signs. All accounts show that they are online.

UPDATE:
I deleted all the messages off the server of the offending email address and everything works fine now.

I have been using my Ipad about two weeks and all of a sudden I can no longer access Mail. It will not allow me to get in through preferences either. Any help?

All of a sudden Reader says all pdf's rec'd by e-mail are damaged or corrupt. Help available?

I'm using the latest version of Office 365's Outlook on Windows 8.1. I receive many e-mails from different sources containing PDF files. All of a sudden I receive an error message on every PDF. Generally its "There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and can't be repaired." I even forwarded a PDF that I know others have been able to open to my wife's e-mail address and it gave her the same error message. So not only are PDF's I receive not able to be opened but my Reader or something else on my computer seems to be damaging or corrupting them! I thought I had a malware problem so I re-set my Dell laptop back to reinstallation of Windows and re-installed Adobe Reader XI. I have also right-clicked on a PDF file and set Adobe Reader XI as the default program.

Please let me know what version of Adobe Reader you are using.
You might need to choose 'Check for Updates' option under the Help menu to use the latest version of Reader i.e. 11.0.10
Also, tell me whether you are viewing the PDFs through 'Preview' or first download the files and then open with Reader.
Try disabling protected mode from Edit> Preferences> Security (Enhanced) and check.

Often printing problems are a sign of corrupt preferences. Go to HD > Users > (your account) > Library > Preferences, delete the com.apple.iwork.pages.plist file & then restart Pages.

No. My frustration with the problem just led me to begin the process convert all my email to a gmail client. However, after some time all my mail with att/yahoo has been coming through as before. Go figure. Still will convert to gmail.

Is it possible you mistakenly clicked on a [Clear Layout] button?
But a great hint is- Always click on the [Create a Saved Book] button, early in your new book design.
Then you have a permanent link to the book in the Collections panel. (In addition to the standard collection of your selected images)
Note: a Book Collection shows an icon that looks like a book.
Every time you come back to edit the book, open the Book Module by clicking on the white arrow that appears on the end of your Book Collection title. (The title as saved)
Re-opening a book without using the "Saved Book" option can have unpredictable results.
A "Book" Collection is like a "Smart Collection" because anything you do to the book design, change pages, change images, etc, is automatically updated in the Saved Book collection.

When you tap on the arrow in the upper right corner and select - Forward - doesn't another window popup that says Include/Don't Include? That is in reference to the attachment. Select Include from that window.

Lost mails in my mail box for all of a sudden

I am a new mac user for a few months only and my english is not that good please forgive me.
I use Mail app to receive mails for my work and I set up the account as a POP account. A week ago I think that the I need to organize my mail box so I create some folders and put my important mails into folders and delete some of mails I don't need them anymore. All of a sudden they all gone before two days ago. Can anyone give me some ideas about what's going on? Any luck on saving my mails?

Did you create the folders under "ON MY MAC"? If you did then it is possible that a file, which keeps track of where your messages are, has been corrupted. This can be fixed but firstly let us determine where you put your messages.

All of a sudden, when I click on Firefox in order to access my aol free e-mail, all I get is a screen that says "Google". How do I get out of that screen?

I've never had this problem before. Always when I click on Mozilla Firefox I get the Aol screen asking for my password to get my aol free e-mail. Why am I all of a sudden getting this Google screen which I can see no way to exit from it?

You should take a look at the Knowledge Base article [[How to set the home page]]. Your homepage might have been changed to the default Firefox home page. It sounds like you just want to make webmail.aol.com/ your home page. Just enter that into the address bar and hit enter. Then follow the steps to make that your home page.
If that doesn't work you should look at the article [[Preferences are not saved]].
If you don't see the navigation bar to enter an address or any of the other navigation buttons, take a look at [[Back and forward or other toolbar items are missing]]. That article will show you how to turn on the navigation bar again.

If you're having trouble sending mail, then either the SMTP (outbound) mail server settings — the server, the port, the user, the password, and whether SSL is in use or (unlikely) not — are incorrect, or the mail server is offline or has been reconfigured.
The SMTP (outbound) settings are in Preferences, but are buried rather deeply. Select Preferences > Accounts > select the account > switch the outgoing mail server (SMTP) to Edit SMTP Server List... and then select the SMTP server from the list, and verify that the settings are correct with your ISP, and that your username and password are correct.
The required settings vary by your particular mail ISP; you'll have to check with the ISP for the server and login details.
To test settings, select Window > Connection Doctor > then (when the tests fail) show the details, and (if you can't sort out what happened) sanitize the settings and post the output here.
Caveat: do not repeat password tests with the mail server, as various mail providers can be configured to assume these are a password brute-force attack, and lock out repeated login attempts.
Caveat: never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever not-at-all enter a password when Mail pops up a dialog box with the "OMG YOUR PASSWORD IS WRONG!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE ENSURE YOU CANNOT LOG IN AGAIN!!!!!" dialog box. (I'm paraphrasing that error dialog box slightly.) The correct answer to that Mail.app password dialog box is almost always "cancel" button. Passwords stored in Keychain generally don't get lost or corrupted, and trying random passwords as that dialog box encourages just gets you locked out of various servers, and...
