All of a sudden my RAW (Nikon D7100) files are dark after importing

Could anyone tell me why all of a sudden my NEF files from my Nikon D7100 raw files turn dark after importing them to Lightroom 4.4? I did use Dactive lighting setting in camera...is this why? Is there anyway to stop this from happening? THanks!

I can't argue with that.

it does not help eith raw images.
That would be truer if stated thusly:
Having ADL on will make for darker initial rendering in Lightroom and reveal non-optimal ADL setting as under-exposed images.
However (and contrary to popular belief), that does NOT mean there is no value using ADL in conjunction with Lightroom for post-processing - quite the contrary: there are ALL the same benefits as when using ADL in conjunction with NX2, *except* that the compensations are applied automatically in NX2, and non-optimal setting manifests as a slight reduction in shadow image quality and not as under-exposed images when using NX2 instead of Lightroom for post-processing.

My RAW (nikon .NEF) files are literally changing to a dull, darker version of themselves after selecting them for the first time after import. I.e. The correct photo (light/color/etc) seems to be there and then a second later the photo changes. It's almost like it's showing a quick enhanced version then back to basic raw image. Started within last two updates.
Is there a fix or is this the straw that forces a switch to Lightroom?

Just recall that Aperture (or any other 3rd party raw converter) has NO information about the JPEG preview and how it was made.  That information is camera-vendor proprietary.
Also note that there are like 6 "picture styles" in camera and this change you're seeing is entirely dependent on how you have them set.  If you have your camera set to "vivid" or something you'll see more of a change than if your on-camera is set to "faithful."
That said, people here ALSO complain that Aperture's initial renders are TOO vivid, the exact opposite of your complaint, so you can't please everybody (in some cases, it seems you can't please ANYBODY ;-)
Aperture provides a starting point.  Again, if you don't like it, you can tell Aperture to go with a "punchier" interpretation at its first render.  In the import dialog, try setting Aperture to use the "auto enhance" preset which is built in.  Aperture will add a little vibrancy adjustment, and it will add a curve, which will greatly add punch to the image.  If you want adjustments in a different direction, you can create a preset and set it at import.
The only thing Aperture CANNOT do is what you're asking, which is "take the JPEG that my camera vendor generates through some voodoo and try and render the raw file just like that."  It's, unfortunately, impossible to do.

DNG files do not contain some metadata supplied by the camera, which can be used by the manufacturer's software. Thus, if you don't keep the original Raw photo, you will lose this information.
If your 1000% sure you're never going to use the manufacturer's software, then this isn't a problem. But who can be sure what software you will be using 10 years from now?

Can RAW (Nikon .NEF) files be imported into PS Elements 11

    Hi there
Yes, PS Elements 11 supports RAW files with the Camera Raw plugin. Just make sure you have the latest version of RAW installed and that you are using a compatible camera.

Thanks Terence, I rebuilt my database....I was not aware that I could access rebuild tools by holding the command and options buttons. Like I said, I'm new to Mac. I was able to recreate my missing photo's but they aren't the same pixel quality as the originals, look kind of blurry....any thoughts on this???

  • HT3946 LX3 RAW files very dark after updating to Aperture 3.3.2

Since updating to version 3.3.2 my RAW files from my lumix LX3 appear very dark and with a green caste in both thumbnail and full views. My Nikon NEF files are fine. Anybody else had this problem?

Actually, looks like the sliders are greyed out on all settings, manual, Av, and Tv??  This just happened recently and I don't think there was an update.  I rebuilt the database already.  Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

No, that only means, that your raw format has a better compression. Converting to TIFF will not add any better resolution. Not the file size does count for better prints, but the pixel size - the width and height of the photo in pixels.

    What version of iPhoto?
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
    Post back with the result.

  • PSE12 Camera Raw / Nikon D7100

I´m using an iMac with Yosemite 10.10. I´ve Photoshop Elements 12.1 with Camera Raw 8.5.0.236 installed.
I can´t open my Nikon D7100 NEF-files. It says that my camera files are not supported...!???
I´ve search all over Adobe.com and the Internet and can´t find a way around the problem.
I´ve used to love Adobe-products, but I´m beginning to start looking for something else to use...
    Pls help!

The Nikon D7100 has been supported since ACR 7.4 so ACR 8.4 should be plenty new enough.
The issue may be that you’ve transferred or even viewed the NEFs with an obsolete Nikon software such as Nikon Transfer or View NX, which will rendering them unrecognizable to Adobe software.
Test this by copying the NEFs to your hard-drive using Finder or some other non-Nikon-based software.
There is a utility from Phil Harvey that can reverse the corruption, available here:
    http://owl.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/fix_corrupted_nef.html
If this isn’t the issue, can you upload one of the NEFs that doesn’t work to somewhere like http://www.dropbox.com and post a public download/share link in a reply, here, so others can test it.

  • Camera raw nikon d7100

    HI,
You don't say which version of Photoshop Elements you have.
You don't need to use the organizer. If you open a raw file in the editor, Camera Raw will automatically be loaded to read the file.
If you have Photoshop Elements 10 or earlier you need to buy a new version or use the free Adobe DNG converter.
If you have Photoshop Elements 11 you need to update it by going to Help -> Updates.
If you have Photoshop Elements 12 the it should be working jut after installing it.
If you still can't read the raw files, you may be using an old version of the Nikon software which corrupts the files - see
    http://owl.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/fix_corrupted_nef.html

  • Iphoto v5.0.4 and RAW Nikon D1X files

Iphoto will not import Nikon D1X RAW files, only TIFF's & JPG's. Is there an update for this problem ?As I always tend to shoot in RAW initially.
    Dan Rose

    Hi Jack!
If you're new working with RAW files, your right, it just doesn't make sense. RAW <imho> is a bit overrated. One thing you will need to keep in mind when shooting in RAW, is you will still need to take a well exposed image. What RAW files will allow are CHANGES in all areas of the image v. JPEG which may allow you to ADJUST a few settings in the image. My only suggestion would be to kepp playing around with PSE until you get the hang of it, it is an excellent image editing software. But realize, a well exposed JPEG and RAW file are hard to tell apart...
Personally, I do not directly download RAW files through iPhoto but will create a folder and download to here, and simply drage folder to iPhoto to import (which are then 'converted' into JPEG files). This way I have the original RAW images safely located outside of iPhoto as well as in iPhoto. You should set Elements as your choice of application to edit files inside iPhoto.
    Good luck, Rick

  • CS 6 not reading Nikon D7100 files anymore. Assistance sought.

Hi: I have CS6 and a Nikon D7100. Initially, I was able to read raw files, but then I updated to the latest plugin: 8.4 and now, can't. So I tried reinstalling the 7.4 plugin and still can't read them. How can I fix this? Thanks.

Don't even consider uninstalling, etc., until you have determined that your files are NOT corrupted.
If they are not corrupted, then Purging the Cache for the offending folder(s) (what you erroneously refer to as "files") through the Tools menu > Cache… in Bridge may solve your issue.
Try opening a different type of file.  Alternatively, if there are no privacy concerns, upload one of your raw files to a free service it like yousendit.com and post the link here.
