All of a sudden yahoo has taken over my search in google. How do I get rid of it?

Google is my home page. Recently when I type my search item in the google box it re-directs to yahoo and gives me shady hits. If I can't get rid of yahoo I'm deleting firefox. There is no way to contact them whatsoever so my frustration level is through the roof! Tried to do a system restore to my computer to get rid of it and then it messed up my firefox so it wouldn't launch. When I re-downloaded it at the firefox site it put that vosteran virus on my computer. I am appalled that firefox is not on top of this. Finally got rid of vosteran but am stuck with this effing yahoo. Want it effing gone! The image won't upload of course!

hi
you can reset your default search engine by
* clicking the menu button
* options
* search
* choose google from the dropdown
* untick the other search engines in the lower box
this will leave you with just google search as your seach engine

  • Yahoo has locked itself as my homepage. How do I get rid of it?

If I gave yahoo permission to be my homepage I didn't mean to. Now it is locked in as my home page. I would like to get rid of it. I was not sure which place to ask this question but this was as good as any. thank you, Linda

Yes, the mozilla.cfg file exists. My boyfriend cleared the contents of that file using notepad and saved the blank file yesterday. The browser came up fine after that until I powered down the computer last night and brought it back up this morning. The mozilla.cfg file was reconstructed and he cleared it again. He ran HijackThis and removed two entries (marked ** in the log file below): R0 - Yahoo search, O4 - Websearchy and said there were other problems he saw in the log. I do not see how to attach the HijackThis log, so it is copy pasta time:

  • Bearshare was downloaded to our home computer. Now it has taken over my Firefox homepage and I can't get rid of it. I have tried changing the homepage via Tools, Options. Didnt work. Deleted the Bearshare app and cookies and web history. Still didnt work.

Tried resetting default setting via Firefox Safemode. Didnt work. Any suggestions.?
My situation is 2 home computers (Windows XP) sharing 1 modem, but have their own apps. Mozilla on the other computer is fine. Just this one which Bearshare was downloaded to.
It took over the Homepage in IE too, but I was able to change it using Internet Options.
The message which comes up when I try to change the Homepage is "An attempt to change the homepage has been blocked"
    Tks

You only get an alert stating "An attempt to change the homepage has been blocked" if you have security software or an extension that is protecting against such a change. Firefox doesn't do that by itself. If starting in [[Safe mode]] didn't help then that only leaves security software, so you need to look to see how you can allow a home page change.

  • Inbox has taken over Firefox start page. I can't get rid of it. Any ideas?

Have attempted to remove program via the control pane. It appeared to succeed but was just removed from the list of programs. It still replaces Firefox when opening.

    Thanks, it worked!

  • Who is inbox? They've taken over my Firefox Application. How do I get rid of this, or is it you rebranding?

When I click on my Firefox icon on my front page, I get a whole other "internet browser" called Inbox, which seems to have displaced you all together. It has not affected my internet explorer browser. I suspect that I have been hacked, despite a two-month-ago installation of AVG antivirus softwarre, which was recommended by a friend, but is cumbersome and annoying. Any ideas? Are you rebranding to Inbox? I would not think so. I like my Firefox just the way it is. thanks for your help in advance , Laura Beauchamp

  • Last time I updated firefox Yahoo has taken over. I hate yahoo and would like to remove it is that possible?

when I uploaded the new version of firefox yahoo has taken over. It over rides everything and I want to remove it is that possible to keep firefox but remove yahoo?
When I put a address in the address bar yahoo over rides it and it goes to a yahoo page.

    Hi All,
Have just sorted this problem. Do the following:
type into your address bar> about:config
this will bring up the usual warning that it might void your warrantee. Click> I'll be careful I promise.
in the filter bar at the top enter "Yahoo" without the quotes.
At the bottom of the list ther'll be a string named "Keyword.url. Right click on this and select reset.
While your in there if you like you can right click on any of the yahoo lines and select modify. Once once the box opens replace Yahoo by overtyping Google.
Close the tab and that should cure the problem.
    All the best
    Mick

Those look alot like file names and not infection names. I don't find any reference to anything like that on Norton or VirusTotal. Since you said these were Trojans, I would expect to see "Trojan" as part of the infection name.
".jar" files are executable Java applets. The random alpha-numerics would seem to indicate a cache file, likely from a browser with Java enabled. And we all know what ".zip" means.
Worst case is that you had Java enabled in a browser and were infected by one of the late variants of the Flashback Trojan over a year ago or one of a couple of other attacks using the same vulnerability but targetted against a small number of political sympathizers. Much more probable is that thes were Windows only Trojans. Hopefully you have a fully up-to-date OS X, including Java, and have disabled Java in all your browsers by now.

You will Not be able to get rid of it entirely...
Other is usually around 1 GB...
A  ' Large Other ' usually indicates Corrupt Data...
First Try a Restore from Backup...
But... if the Large Other Persists, that is an Indicator of Corrupt Data in the Backup...
Then a Restore as New is the way to go...

I've used the option dialogue box and set the default webpage to my own but yahoo comes up instead. They must be desperate! This really stinks. How can I get rid of it?

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

Other blogs show how to solve this on a Windows set up, but not MAC
    Any ideas

Yes, it is a varient of the same malware however for Mac users it appears to only infect the browser using a Javascript lock.
Write down the url of the malware site, all you need is the domain name like discussions.apple.com, nothing else is needed.
1: Command tab to the Finder
2: Apple Menu > Force Quit > Safari
3: Relaunch Safari holding the Shift key down to disable reopening of previous pages.
    4: Reset Safari.
5: Report the offending site to: https://www.google.com/safebrowsing/report_badware/
6: Restart your machine and restore from TimeMachine backup or bootable clone (optional at this time as we don't know much about it on Mac's yet)
    Most commonly used backup methods
7: Harden your Mac against stuff like this: Harden your Mac against malware attacks

  • If Firefox has already downloaded the 30.0 update, how do I get rid of it so that it won't upgrade Firefox when I restart my browser?

Please don't try to encourage me to use the new update. That is not what I am asking. The layout of Firefox 30 is not user friendly at all, and if I cannot continue to use 28, I will change to a different browser.
What I need to know is how can I get rid of the update that just downloaded itself without warning and permission? I have ALREADY selected in the options menu for Firefox to not check for updates. Thanks to another user's post I was able to learn how to disable this completely in the about:config menu (why can't it be done in the settings? Why doesn't Firefox listen to its users? That's a whole other problem!)
I would really appreciate it if someone could tell me how to delete the update, that appeared against my will, so that I will not be FORCED into using version 30 next time I run my browser.

I have heard there is a bug with that version where the
    update options are ignored.
