All of iphoto and itunes library disappeared

So I shut down the computer 2 days ago, and re started. The dock moved from the left ( where I had put it ) to the bottom, there were more icons in the dock that I originally had, all libraries of music and photos are gone now. The desktop icons were tiny and the words were thru the center of the icons. I clicked on several photo icons from the pictures folder and some appear and others come up with an UNREADABLE FILE MESSAGE. Then I selected iphoto to read those files and a message of a corrupt file from iphoto appeared. What could have happened here?

You could try and see if using a second (make a new one, if need be) user account in your computer
eliminates the newer sound issue and any other not likely related to corrupt user preferences in your
original user name; you can restart, or login/logout from the different user files to access them. If you
make a second account, remember its password and give it Admin privileges, like your original. This
can give you a neutral and uncomplicated base from which to troubleshoot your main system; as the
new account will not see into your original account, but can be handy to see if odd quirks or defects
or other problems are only based in Software. Since software and some non-hardware problems can
be addressed, at times, even without a major reinstall.
There are several basic things, which I do on an automatic (to me) basis, and not on a crisis manage-
ment one. Preventative routines, such as the freeware GUI utility from Titanium Software by the name
of OnyX (correct version for each Mac OS X is available as a download; site found by easy search)
can keep your system running well. OnyX: http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs2/english/download.html
You could see if 'restoring user account preferences' (or files?) could help. I have never lost mine,
so this is a hit and miss deal. Maybe Duane (here in forums) can provide a simple two sentence
reply to this... I did a google search and found several, in this following results link:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=restoringuser+account+preferences+OS+X10.4&btnG=Search
Repair disk permissions? From the Utilities folder (see GO in main menubar; click, see Utilities in
the dropdown list; choose it, Utilities folder will open. Scroll folder window to look for Disk Utility.
Double-click D.U. to launch it. Close background folder window; in Disk Utility, click to choose the
named item matching your hard disk drive icon on the desktop from the list. Choose Repair Disk
Utilities from the two items in the new window (forget Verify, as Repair will verify and repair.) If
the utility shows things that were repaired, and then finally is Done; re-run the same thing and
get a clean report, before quiting Disk Utility. This is all in the computer's OS. You can boot the
computer from the OSX installer disc and choose to run Disk Utility to Repair Disk. This will
check and repair the hard disk drive, and not just repair disk permissions.
A way to have the system checked and some repairs done on startup or restart is to hold the
Shift key down just after the startup tone (if you can hear them) and keep holding the key down
until well after the desktop starts to appear. I wait until I see a little box in the window that says
Mac OS X and the version number and then it goes to a SafeBoot login (in 10.4 and later) and
you have to supply your admin password for it to continue. Do that, and the computer will be
booted in a limited use mode. (Note, if you do not get the shift key pressed soon enough, the
computer may still start in a limited mode, but not in SafeBoot. Try the process again, and when
it starts in SafeBoot, it has checked some main system files and done some repairs on startup.
I sometimes, then, use the Disk Utility from in the computer's Utility folder, and repair disk perm-
issions; and after that, quit Disk Utility; close any folders; have the computer restart from the
menu below the Apple in the menubar. This may help in some small ways.
Hard to say why your user account access to certain application's files has stopped working;
but if using SafeBoot and Disk Utility's 'repair disk permissions' from in the computer's system
does not work, try booting from the OS X installer matching your current system, and then run
Disk Utility from the menu options in the top of the window once the computer is running from
the system on that bootable installer disc. Do Not use the Installer to re-install a system. Use
Disk Utility to "repair disk" (not permissions, necessarily or exclusively) and let it try and fix
whatever it finds. When it is done, quite Disk utility and chose the startup volume representing
the installed Operating system (already computer hard drive) to have the computer restart from it.
You can get and use a utility such as OnyX and choose most items in its Automation menu; this
utility, once installed (and I drag a link to it from the App to the Dock, so I can get to it any time)
it will ask for the Admin password to run. You can set main preferences in this utility so it can
automatically restart after it runs the chosen things in Automation, and if you habitually and
manually run 'repair disk permissions' and don't want OnyX to do that again (it can, as part of a
selected choice of options in that utility's preference) you can have it not run a verify or disk repair
on first run; it will only do what the main Automation list has check-boxed.
There are some good ideas to check over in MacAttorney's web site; most of what I could say, based
on some 10 years and 114 Macs in my own experience, may take more words than his. See:
"OS X Maintenance and Troubleshooting" http://www.macattorney.com/ts.html (Mac OS X 10.4 & before.)
If your machine were here, I could show you all these things; have it doing them time it took to write this!
(Helps to have copies of OnyX, clones of your system in a perfect state on a bootable external hard drive,
and a second computer to go online, if needed; on hand, as I do.)
The Apple web site has links to stores with repair departments; I have not looked in there lately because
Apple has no retail stores or company repair facilities in my home state. Apple retail store's link has a
way to check into all states (and other countries) stores and what they offer. If the Mac is out of warranty,
(likely, if it's a G4, etc) there may be some local options in your phone book who have authorized product
specialists on staff; an option where no local Apple Stores exist. Some are Specialists who know stuff.

Best of luck.

Apple keeps books for a short time (used to be 40 days. I've not seen a recent time frame)
    What version did you have?
Books do nor exist except in the iPhoto database so you can not "find" a book vista TM. You restore a previous library (be sure NOT to overwrite your current library) and switch to it

  • Move iPhoto and iTunes library from Time Machine back-up

I need to move the iPhoto and iTunes libraries from an old Powerbook G4 to a new Mac Mini but I want to save the stuff I have put on my Mini over the past month or so. Is there a way to open my Time Machine back-up from the hard drive through my new mini and move the pictures and music?
    Thanks for your help

first, don't do anything with the old TM drive via finder.
connect the old TM drive to the mini, control-click on TM in the dock and select 'browse other TM disks". this will let you browse the old backups and restore what you want where you want to. itunes library is in /users/username/Music and iphoto library is in /Users/username/Pictures.
you can also use Migration Assistant. this will let you migrate your whole old account to a new account on the mini. it won't overwrite anything you have now. it will just create a new account where all your old data will be.

  • Two User IDs with one iPhoto and iTune Library

I'd like to set up the user permissions on my MacBook so that two different users can have access to the same iPhoto and iTunes libraries. I've set up both users as administrators. I've tried moving the libraries to the SHARE folder, but that didn't work. In the GET INFO menu I set up both users with READ&WRITE access. This works for one user at a time, but I cant set it up so both users have access.

  • HELP! Deleted iPhoto and iTunes Libraries by changing name?!?!?

    Hey guys,
My friend had two user accounts on his Mac. One was "Chris" and one was "Katie". The only one that was ever used was "Chris". Since his wife used the Mac a lot more than he did he thought it would be funny to change the user name from "Chris" to "Katie's Big Mac". The short name was not changed at all. He then deleted "Katie". I guess that deleted all the iPhoto and iTunes Libraries. But that was it.
Does any one know why it did this? I told her to look under Users: Chris: Music: iTunes: iTunes Music: and all of the old files were there. She dragged one of the files over and dropped it in iTunes to copy it over and then she went back to get more and they all disappeared from the folder iTunes Music. I didn't tell her to do this she did it on her own.
The iPhoto Library is totally empty though. Does anyone know why this happened and how to fix it?
    Thanks in advance.

    PM G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Okay it's fixed now. All he did was change the old names back to the way they were, recreate "Katie", and it all came back. He had to reload the libraries for iPhoto and iTunes but that was it. All other prefs are fine. But the weird part is that now the files that were in Chris are now in Katie. Thanks for your help.

  • I just backed up my 3gs iphone using itunes.  All my photos and contacts have disappeared from my phone.  I am unable to locate them on my computer.  HELP!!!

I just backed up my 3gs iphone using itunes.  All my photos and contacts have disappeared from my phone.  I am unable to locate them on my computer.  HELP!!!

OK, I understand.  Try this ... it's much safer.  It will simply restore your backup, but not do anything to your iOS:
While your iPhone is plugged in to iTunes, right click on the iPhone icon on the left side of the iTunes display.
Choose "Restore from backup ..." from the pop-up menu that appears.
Again, what this will do is place that backup back on your iPhone without changing iOS.  So you should be very confident in the backup contents before doing this.

How can I transfer my iPhoto photos and iTunes library to my new iMac?

If the Migration Assistant won't do it, move them over as you would any other folder; they're located in the Pictures and Music folders of your home folder by default. The iPhoto library needs to be transferred via a drive, partition, or disk image formatted as Mac OS Extended or through an AFP network share.

  • Ever since the last iTunes update, my cloud movies and TV purchases all vanished from my iTunes library.

Ever since the last iTunes update, my cloud movies and TV purchases all vanished from my iTunes library.  I go to Settings>Store>Show Cloud Purchases, but Show Cloud Purchases isn't there.  So, I go to the store, then click on purchases, and I download anything from my iTunes account.  Now, I go to Settings>Store>Show Cloud Purchases, and it is back.  I check the box, and my cloud purchases are again back in iTunes.
OK, I wouldn't bother posting this, but a day or so later, it all happens again.  Cloud purchases gone, no option to fix in the Settings>Store menu until I go to the store and download something again.
How do I get iTunes for Windows to keep showing my cloud purchases without having to do this silly work-around every day or two?

Audiobooks are not avaiable for redownload from iTunes, though I suspect you may find they are still on your computer even if not currently listed in your library. This may help...
    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping.  Note that in iTunes 11 an "empty" library may show your past purchases with links to stream or download them.
In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
Would you mind telling me which anti-virus package you use? It may be that it is disturbing iTunes when it tries to write out the fresh database, as it does after almost any activity with your library. I'm noticing more of this type of problem than usual and trying to see if there is any pattern. It may help to prevent a repeat of the problem if you look at the advanced options for your AV package and see if you can find a way to exclude the iTunes folder from any real-time scanning process.

Restoring a backup is specific to the backup program you are using to do your daily backups - consult it's manual, help file or author's support site
Back up your iPhoto library, Depress the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library starting with the first option and trying others until you are succesful

  • I have put my iPhoto library and iTunes library to an external drive to free up space on my Mac.  How do I back up these libraries that are on my external drive?

I believe that Time Machine will only back up my Mac hard drive and will not know that my libraries are on an external drive.
I essentially have my Mac, 1 external for time machine back ups, and 1 external dedicated to my iPhoto and iTunes libraries.
I want to be able to have a back-up of my iPhoto and iTunes libraries that are on my external drive.  I don't believe Time Machine will know to back up those files.  Am I right?  What is the solution?

    It is that simple?
So you can have Time Machine backup several drives as long as it is not in the exclusions list?

  • Manually migrating iPhoto and iTunes from Snow Leopard to Lion..

    Hi all,
I received a shiny new iMac yesterday and in my haste to get it up and running, I began to run the migration assistant on wi-fi.  Unfortunately, my 2006 macbook model is so old that my firewire cables don't actually fit the firewire port on the back of the iMac!!
11 hours later, there was still 40 hours left to go.  At this point I manually quit the migration assistant. Partly because I have to work and to work I need to use a computer and partly because I realised that I don't want all the old crud from my previous system.. all I want is my iTunes (songs, apps, playlists etc) and my iPhoto to migrate.
The original admin account that the migration assistant was going to replace was still there.  Everything seems to be working fine... I did a quick repair of disk permissions and all seems fine.   So, I think I flirted with danger by quiting the migration assistant, but danger doesn't seem to have flirted back.
I've searched high and low on the web and I can't find any advice on migrating just your iPhoto and iTunes from Snow Leopard to Lion.  I did read a post somewhere (relating to a migration to Leopard) where someone wrote that, for iPhoto, you simply had to replace your iPhoto Library in your pictures folder on the destination machine and then simply start iPhoto.  iPhoto would upgrade the databases etc and all would be fine in the world.  I cannot find a post online that suggests that this is also the case for Lion.
Can anyone here give me some hints on how to manually migrate the iPhoto and iTunes libraries over (and still preserve playlists in iTunes, albums/events in iPhoto etc)?
I figure that I cannot be the only person in the world who wants a "fresh start" on their machine, with the exception of iPhoto and iTunes.

Resident apple gurus at work have advised me to use the migration assistant and plug an ethernet cable between machines.
I'll give this a go and then go through the process of removing and cleaning up whatever old data I can.. but if someone posts a response to this question for me, I'll happily roll back in time-machine and go again in a cleaner way. :-)

  • When I downloaded the newest version of iTunes, my previously downloaded music in iTunes library disappeared on my computer?  There was no warning of this happening.  What do I do?

Ok, so I downloaded the newest version of iTunes on my home PC, and the previously downloaded music in my iTunes library disappeared on my computer.  What happened?  I can sync my iPod but I am not sure how long ago I synced it so I may be missing some music downloads.  Why did this happen, and more importantly, why didn't iTunes warn me it could happen and advise me to sync with another device before the download?  I am not very happy about this and it's a huge issue for iTunes if this is happening.  It makes me very wary of iTunes.

  • IMovie, Garageband, iPhoto and iTunes no longer working together.

I have seen several variations of this issue but NO solutions.
I work with iMovie almost every day; up until a month ago, all four (iMovie, Garage Band, iPhoto and iTunes) worked together perfectly.
iMovie no longer asks to make thumbnails of the videos in iPhoto when opening iMovie.
When opening the iphoto media browser, I am told to open iPhoto..
When opening the itunes media browser in iMovie, I get the same message "open itunes..."
I have opened those apps and iMovie is not recognizing that they are open.
    Garageband no longer recognizes iTunes - again, I am getting the message to "open iTunes";
Last night I discovered that iTunes no longer offers me the option of syncing selected iPhoto albums to my iPhone and iPad; the only option I have is to sych my entire iPhoto Library file.
I have posted these issues in iMovie and iPhoto forums and always am given a workaround but no solution; or I am told to ask the quesiton in another forum. I am posting THIS in all of the forums, so please do not suggest that I need to go to another forum.
I have searched all similar threads and found others who are having the same issue but seem to never be given a solution.
I have found temporary work arounds (exporting photos from iPhoto as slideshows and then importing them into iMovie; creating a Loop in Garageband which I export to iTunes to my "playlist" which is THEN recognized by Garageband and can be used in iMovie.
Any help for this will be greatly appreciated.

    Try the following:
Delete the following two preference files from your Home/Library/Preferences folder:
    com.apple.iApps.plist
    com.apple.iApps.lockfile
Launch iPhoto and then iMovie and check the Media Browser again.
NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and press the Return key - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

  • How to transfer iphoto and itunes libraries from NAS back to MacBook Pro

I recently upgraded my MBP hard drive, and decided I'd like to move my iphoto and itunes libraries back to my local drive from my Synology NAS. I thought this would be easily achieved by copying the libraries from the NAS and pasting them in the desired locations in the MBP, as I did to get them to the NAS in the first place. This will not work.
First off, when I try a simple copy and paste through finder, the transfer gets about half way through and suddenly stops with  "You can't copy "iPhoto Library" because it has the same name as another item in the destination volume, and that volume doesn't distinguish between upper- and lowercase letters in filenames".
This occurs even if there is no Iphoto directory currently on the MBP.
I contacted Synology, and they attempted to have me use a windows transfer protocol to transfer the libraries, but when transferring this way I am stopped half way through with an "Error -8084" code.
I am aware that the MBP is formatted with MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and that the NAS is formatted differently, but there must be some way to get this back.
My itunes library contains all my family's ipad, and iphone back ups, in addition to around 35 gb of music. Additionally, I don't want to lose Event info in Iphoto.
    Please help!
    Thank you
