"all on my mac" purpose in Address Book?

I still do not have my head around the changes w/r iCloud, MobileMe & Google syncing...
I have re-occuring iCal birthday dups coming from Address Book that I clear and that re-appear after a few days.
Anyone understand the purpose of "All on My Mac" in Address Book these days?  This category seems redundant?
If one's contacts are in iCloud, is there a reason to have any entries under "All on my Mac"?  This is where my iCal birthday dups are coming from - duplicate entries appearing under both iCloud and "AoMM"
On a related topic, I am not sure if syncing between Address Book and Google Contacts is done between Google and the "AoMM" contacts or the iCloud contacts or both.

You can't delete the All On My Mac as it is an automatic group to display all of the contacts that are stored "On My Mac." You can delete all of the contacts that are in the ON MY MAC section by selecting All ON My Mac and then selecting all contacts. Press delete and approve the deletion. Then, select each group under ON My Mac and delete those individually.
Then, Make sure iCloud is set as the default account in the General Address Book Preferences.

  • How do I remove on my mac data from address book

I want to get rid of my on my mac data from address book locally on my imac and just use the icloud data to populate address book.  Someone else set up my other machines in the office that way, and I want to do it the same on this imac.  How can I do this?
    Thank you.

    Hi Csound1,
I am stogling with the same issue posted on this discussion.
Exchange2013 and raw contacts populated on my contacts as well as on the exchange server (I have seeing it using a PC and outlook).
You sugest to clean on My Mac contacts. Do not set on My Mac as a default account. Following is what I found:
There is no way to get out the on My Mac account from contacts.
There is no way set any default account on contacts>preferences>general
The on My Mac contacts list IS EMPTY and the '-' sign is hidden on the contacts>preferences>accounts.
When I turn on my Exchange Account on my contacts are downloaded from the server, however, I still not able to set ANY DEFAULT ACCOUNT at all.
If I leave like it is 2 days later I will have at least a dozen of those expurious emails on my contacts list.
    Thanks,
    Edson

  • Mac OS x Address Book

I have lost the ability to create New Groups in the Mac OS X Address Book. Clicking the + sign, using FILE 'Create Group', etc no longer work. Did I miss a Memo?

I think Address Book does that through Mobile Me.

  • IPhone Contacts vs Mac OS X Address Book

Why is it that the iPhone can connect to and sync with Exchange option and multiple Google Apps Contacts accounts, and the Mac OS X address book cannot?
Seems like it should be a simple upgrade?
Are we ever going to be able to have simultaneous sync of contacts with multiple Google accounts or not? Seems like people have only been asking for it forever...
Why no response from either Google or Apple?

I think Address Book does that through Mobile Me.

Not much more to add. I deleted the Mac OS X address book and now I cannot get it to show from within Thunderbird. It makes working within the program difficult. Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks.

  • HT204150 I have just set up icloud and all my contacts are duplicated from Address Book! My new iPhone is also showing duplicate contacts even though they are not duplicated in my address book on my computer. Please can you help

I have just set up icloud and all my contacts are duplicated from Address Book! My new iPhone is also showing duplicate contacts even though they are not duplicated in my address book on my computer. Please can you help?

Also, what are the source of your contacts? are they created on the phone, or you synced from yahoo/hotmail etc.
If thats the case, the circular arrow wont be visible but instead show "groups"
Contacts from different accounts are not synced to iCloud.

  • Macbook Air with Mac OS X Address book not syncing with iPhone 5s completely

I have just started ICloud syncing of my macbook air address book and my iphone. Some seemingly random contacts are not being transferred down to the iphone. I can't figure this out. How do you make this work correctly?

First of all, your post title refers to an iPhone 5S.  There is no such device being sold by Apple.
Aside from that, it sounds like your contacts are in more than one account on your Mac.  In Contacts on your Mac, you might try clicking the button closest to the plus side in the lower left of the display to hopefully show your various accounts.  You might also check Contacts > Preferences > Accounts.

  • Itunes sync erased ALL contacts from my phone and address book empty

So I must have chose something wrong when I ran a sync and it erased my address book from my iPhone.
What do I need to check or change before my next sync to make SURE all my address I re-entered on my iPhone are synced with address book on mac instead of mac overwriting my phone and wiping them all out again?
    Thanks in advance!!!
    Patrick

I am VERY dissappointed that the alleged 'smart' operation of iTunes sync would so nonchalantly and impulsively erase ALL the contacts on my iPhone.  Can't it at least WARN YOU... "Hey, I'm doing something that most likely 99.9% of people doing this don't want to do, but, screw you, I'm going to do it all the same" -- bye bye contacts.

  • Mac x Blackberry Address Book Sync

I did a 2-way sync of my contacts to Address Book and all of my Blackberry-based contacts disappeared. I have looked at the backup.xml, Contacts Out.xml, diff.xml and CRC_AB_RIM_CONTACTS.sync files and the contacts are not present in any of those documents. Is there anything I can do to retrieve my old Blackberry-based contacts?

    Hey,
so maybe one solution for you guys with the "day" problem: You need to activate in mac addressbook the "activate timezone support" option (or similar, since my mac os x is german).
What I usually do is taking care of my contacts on the mac and subscribing the birthday calender to my ical so all birthday addressbook entries are also in the addressbook as a separate birthday calender.
Then i sync both calenders to the bb. That works quite well with some minor/major issues:
in daylight saving all birthdays are not all day events, they are 1 hour late, so starting from 01:00 am going to next day 01:00 am
adding a contact in bb with a birthday, a reoccuring birthday date is setup in the bb calender, after syncing back to the mac i get a correct addressbook entry, but a double calender birthday entry: one from bb synced back to my normal calender and one coming from the mac addressbook through the subscribed addressbook birthday calender
I'm not sure if this happens when i add a birthday in bb in daylight saving time or not, but in some case I also get that day problem, since this is also an issue of daylight saving times, i guess ...
So it's weird and I wonder if so many people are just to dumb to use the sync correctly or if RIM is not able or willing to address the issue for months and years now .... ????
I don't want to be rude, but as a business user this is something you can spent hours in and i actually just want to have a phone that is working as it should work.
    Beep.

  • Dot Mac not Syncing Address Book

Syncing won't replace web version of my address book with that from my desktop. I've done the replace from System Preferences, I've even deleted my web based .Mac contacts and then synced, but the old Address Book appears. How do I get the new contacts into .Mac?

Also, when I delete emails "on mailbox & handheld" using my phone nothing changes.  I have to do it again on my PC.
Depending on circumstances, this may be WAD (Working as Designed). All reconciliation is between the BB and your email service...there is no reconciliation between the BB and your PC. See this KB for reference:
KB05133Email reconciliation features for the BlackBerry Internet Service
If your email service is capable of reconciling, from the BB (via BIS), deleted items, then it is a matter between your PC and your email service. You've not said how you are accessing your email from your PC -- webmail, email client (e.g., Outlook, etc.), etc...the answer to that will tell you if you are seeing things as WAD or if things are amiss (since most email clients, Outlook for sure, cannot reconcile items deleted at the server back down to themselves).
    Good luck!

  • IChat always adding contacts to "On My Mac" (cf. Address Book Server)

I've been trying an approach where I move everything out to our Mac OS X Server so I don't have to sync contacts, calendars and so on… I moved all my entries to the [Address Book Server] which worked fine but when I opened iChat… to edit the contacts, selecting the correct cards for all the contacts… it automatically adds that card to "On My Mac"… I've noticed that FaceTime.app only reads "On My Mac" cards as well…
    I added:
Encountering exactly the same issue here on the Snow Leopard Server and clients I set up at our office. When joining an iChat contact to a Contacts stored in an Address Book Server card a (slightly incomplete) copy of the Address Book Server card is created in the “On My Mac” location and it’s this new local card that iChat connects to.
I don’t want these duplicate cards in my Address Book. The ones stored on the Address Book Server should be enough.
This whole local vs server card access issue seems… unfinished (and at a lower API level, if indeed FaceTime exhibits the same issue). Is there a solution to keep these cards on the Address Book Server but still reference them in iChat, without ending up with a duplicate local copy of the cards? Do I need to log this in Radar as a bug?

I have the same issue, and it is quite annoying. It seems as though Apple got the CalDav, CardDav, Push Notification, and iChat servers working just well enough to release, but didn't really get them working well.
I would file a bug with Apple, as I have not found any way of preventing a local copy being made.

  • Sync Sun Messaging Server Address Book with Mac OS X Address Book

    Hello,
I am wondering whether there is a way to synchronise my address books inside Sun Message Server and on my Mac?
Does anybody know how do to this? I tried an VCF export of all my contacts from my Mac address book and imported it with the Web mailer interface Sun Java System Communications Express.
The import was done without any errors but all emails and phone data is gone so finally I got several empty contacts.
Is this a known problem? Is there a workaround or a fix available?
Does anybody know a better way for synchronization in both directions and without duplicating all records on a second import?
Thanks in advance and best regards
    Thorsten

You can try the demo site here:

Are you able to provide an example of a single exported contact that doesn't work (import into CE)?

  • Can two user accounts on the same mac share the Address Book

My wife and I have separate user accounts on the same Mac but we would like to share the same Address Book. I have searched the forums to no avail. It seems silly to use .mac to do so, and a needless expense when the information is already on the same computer.

That's not possible. you have to use Mobileme if you want to share the address book.

  • Mac Mail - rebuild address book

I've replaced the disk drive in my daughter's MacBook after a total disk crash and reinstalled OSX etc.
She had quite a lot of stuff backed up, but not her MacMail address book.
Fortunately our ISP has kept nearly 3000 emails she sent via webmail (when she didn't have the MacBook with her) over the past 2 years.
Reinstating the email account, we have downloaded all the folders from the ISP.
There are now 2 "Sent" folders. One, created by MacMail with the paper aeroplane icon, contains the emails she has sent since the crash, the other, with an ordinary "folder" icon contains the 3000 recovered emails from the ISP server.
We can add the sent email addresses from the MacMail "Sent" folder to the address book via "smart addresses" and "previous recipients", but this is only a few.
I then tried selecting the ISP "Sent" folder and told MacMail to use this as its "Sent". Sure enough the two folders swapped icons, but "smart addresses" and "previous recipients" still only knew about the few emails in the original MacMail "Sent" folder, they don't pick up the 3000 or so.
    1) Can I make SA and PR recognise these emails?
    2) Failing that, could I copy or cut and paste the 3000 emails from one folder to the other and get it to work? I don't really want to do this but I will if it's the only way.
    3) Is there any way of similarly trawling through the received emails (of which there are over 1000 we've managed to recover) and extracting the senders' addresses into the address book?
We could identify each unique email in both folders and, with smart addressing turned on, add them to the address book one at a time, but this would be a long and tedious process.

I then tried selecting the ISP "Sent" folder and told MacMail to use this as its "Sent".
Is this a POP or IMAP account? Who is the email provider?
    1) Can I make SA and PR recognise these emails?
What exactly is 'SA' and 'PR'?
    2) Failing that, could I copy or cut and paste the 3000 emails from one folder to the other and get it to work?
Maybe. You would only need to move them all at once from one folder to the other; copying them to the other folder would create an additional problem. But you may also need to rebuild your Mail index before they would be recognized.
    3) Is there any way of similarly trawling through the received emails (of which there are over 1000 we've managed to recover) and extracting the senders' addresses into the address book?
Yes. Check out this Contextual Menu plugin Mail CM (free trial, but very low cost so there's no point in not paying for it).
