All permissions lost on a folder in a library

Hi,
I accidentally deleted all permission to a folder in a library of document. I wanted to delete acces to everyone except me, but I forgot to uncheck my name... This folder was working with unique permissions and I am the only administrator. How can I access
the folder again?

Have you tried adding yourself to the list, otherwise you need to contact your SharePoint Site collection administrator to add you again to the list.
or else inherit the permission again from the parent, and break inheritance with unique permission, then add users as required.

I wanted to change permissions on a fiie in my root Library (not Home Library) and clicked apply to enclosed items for the entire Library folder. Once I realized what happened (after the fact) I tried to repair permissions but things aren't working right obviously. I have a backup of the Library on my Time Machine drive that is before the snafu.
Is is possible to restore just this Library folder, and if I restored just this folder using Time Machine would it also restore the permissions as they were before I screwed up.
I'm backing up the altered Library folder to another drive just to be safe if I do need to restore.

no, that's not possible because many of those items are in use while you are booted normally. you need to do a full system restore from TM from before you did this. from your last post you seem to be doing just that. and in the future NEVER ever use "apply to enclosed items" on ANY system created folders. that applies btw to things like your home folder, the library in your home folder, your desktop folder etc. use it only on folders you made yourself. apart from messing up permissions on system files like those in the root library, many system created folders like your home folder have hidden ACLs and using 'apply to enclosed items" propagates those ACLs to everything inside.
I'm backing up the altered Library folder to another drive just to be safe if I do need to restore.

I have lost my Profiles folder in Applications Library, and cannot open Safari now?

I attempted to uninstall and reinstall Firefox due to experiencing extreme slow/freezing problems. However I restarted my computer in the middle of Firefox reinstalling all my Profile details (as I thought again, it had frozen). Now I have no Profile folder in Applications Library, so Firefox won't even open.

Back saving to MIF should work, but it’s probably faster to just retrieve a backup of the FM8 files & books and restore them over your botched FM12 versions. Then take a copy of that backup and put it on the trial machine to play away without impacting anything else.

System Folder errors after I changed all permissions on HD to read & write

Two things may have caused probs on my new 2010 iMac (Snow Leopard), and Applecare is shut so I would really appreciate some help as I have urgent work.
1) INCORRECT PERMISSIONS
I have been stupid. I clicked on Macintosh HD and changed all permissions to read & write because I wanted to be sure I could open and edit all documents on other computers.
I ran Disk Utility Repair Permissions from the install disc, but I am still getting system error messages, and my HP printer won't work.
The first message, in Repair Permissions, said: Warning: SUID file System/Library/Cores has been modified and will not be repaired. I have read a support doc on this which says no need to worry but I don't like it and would like to fix this.
More importantly, my HP printer won't work, displays error beside the document in print dialogue box.
Deleting the printer and readding it didn't work, so I downloaded new drivers and tried to install them, which is when I got the second system error message: System extension System/Library/Extensions/BJUSBLoad.kext was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it or contact product's vendor for an update.
I checked the permissions on the file and they were still wrong despite Repair Permissions, allowing everyone to read & write. So I have now clicked on the entire System folder and changed the permissions to: System read & write, admin read only, everyone read only.
Will this fix it or do I need to do something else, such as check ownership, to make sure all permissions on the computer are now correct?
2) MEMORY STICK SHUT DOWN MY IMAC
Additionally (though I don't think this had anything to do with my problems), I inserted a Sandisk USB memory stick the other day and it immediately shut down the computer. When I inserted it into my Macbook it initially rejected it and gave me a message saying the device wanted too much power so it had ejected it to prevent damage to my computer. When I tried again it was OK. I totally reformatted the stick in case there was something harmful on it, but should I now bin the stick as faulty? Scared to use it again.
3) IS IT BEST TO REINSTALL ENTIRE SOFTWARE?
If I do a reinstall of all the software from the install disc, will it wipe out all my data, such as Mail, documents, bookmarks and other apps?
I would back-up, but if I try and back up files on my external drive it will automatically do a Time Machine back-up and I don't want to do that in case it backs-up all the corrupted files. Otherwise, I wouldn't mind starting again just to be sure all is well.
Expert advice would be very much appreciated.

Oh, silly really. I was in a hurry and working on docs that I needed to take to the office and open on another computer there.
But when I checked the permissions on the doc it said I could read & write but everyone else was read only.
I thought if I opened it on another machine I'd be stuck with read only access and not be able to work on there. I think I couldn't change it, so I thought to avoid any future problems like that I would change everything on machine!

Have two users one is a test one is mine all the sudden mine lost the applications folder and now when i open my user it opens but wont respond to anything and i have to power it down and restart any clues

I have two users one is mine, one is a test i set up with apple care. Everything was working fine then i lost my applications folder icon on my user. I have been using the Finder to open applications, now when i open my user the mouse travels but i'm not able to get a respond from anything ,it's almost like its frozen. I have power off and restart and use the test user. Anyone have a clue or any ideas?

You can find the serial number either in About this Mc in the Menu bar under the , or it should be on a sticker under the foot of the machine.
If you have the install discs, try booting from them, holding down the c key and then using Disk Utility to check the drive.
You can also boot into Safe mode
To start up into Safe Mode (to "Safe Boot"), do this:
   1. Be sure the computer is shut down.
   2. Press the power button.
   3. Immediately after you hear the startup tone, press and hold the Shift key.
      Tip: The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone but not before.
   4. Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple and progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During the startup in Mac OS X 10.2 through 10.3.9, you will see "Safe Boot" on the Mac OS X startup screen.
During the startup in Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you will see "Safe Boot" on the login window, which appears even if you normally log in automatically.
Please post back with results,
To leave Safe Mode in any version of Mac OS X, restart the computer normally, without holding any keys during startup.

File Explorer crash after Try Again regarding permissions when cut/paste folder

This happens for me every time I've tried it.
File Explorer crashes when performing a cut/paste operation from a
network shared folder that doesn't have permissions to delete the
folder/files.
In a homegroup sharing situation, with a folder tree shared for the
homegroup members to read, if I use File Explorer to cut/paste a
sub-folder of the remote shared folder to a local drive, I initially
get a prompt to Try Again
"Folder Access Denied
You need permission to perform this action
You require permission from machinename\username to make changes to
this folder
FolderName
Type: File folder
Date modified: the modified date
Try Again/Cancel
...and when I choose try again, Explorer crashes.
Can anyone else repro this?

After Exchange 2010 SP3 upgrade, UAG publised OWA is throwing a "You do not have permissions to view this folder or page" error

We have an issue with our OWA page. We are currently publishing OWA via UAG.
We recently upgraded to Exchange 2010 SP3 and then SP3 Rollup7. Since the upgrade, we are keep getting the following error after entering our credentials on the login page. I've tried with every possible browser.
You do not have permissions to view this folder or page
Strangely enough, the mobile phones are sending and receiving emails just fine, the phones use the same OWA link, so it's not an authentication issue, the phones login into the UAG servers with no issues. I can see this on the Active Sessions screen
on Web Monitor.
I've attempted to connect to the OWA by bypassing the UAG server, so putting in the local OWA address of one of my Exchange servers, it works... so the OWA page is up and running.
No error logs get generated on Web Monitor when we receive the permission error, I think this is because it's past authentication, it's on the Exchange layer.
Any insight would be helpful? I'm assuming something changed on the Exchange side after the upgrade.
Just in case, I've upgraded the UAG and TMG servers to the latest SP and Rollup packets.
UAG > SP4
TMG > SP2 Rollup 5

I've found a solution; UAG requires Basic Authentication over OWA. For some reason Integrated Windows Authentication got turned on after the SP3 upgrade.

Turning Integrated Windows Authentication off via the Client Access OWA settings resolved the issue. Though beware, you
have do this on all your Client Access servers.

It should be in the Users/ Shared folder.
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Note the option to check and repair Library Permissions

iDevices are not and have never been backup devices.
Authorizing a computer does not cause media to magically appear.
Media is only where the user puts it.
Copy the ENTIRE iTunes folder from the old computer to the new computer.

Can I set new shared folders to inherit permissions from the parent folder?

Am running file sharing on an OS 10.9.5 machine. This is not an OS-X Server.
9 users connect to this machine. They create folders and store files on it. All the users who connect are in a group which has read and write permissions on the volume in which they store files. But when they create new folders, the permissions on the new folder is 755. I have changed the umask to 002 and this works for users who might create a folder locally but does not work for network connected users. All users are AFP and, if it matters, are on 10.8.5. The OS versions are held back for good reason.
Is there a way to enable Inherited Permissions for new network created folders on the standard client OS?
If not, can I do so on the server OS? I have several older OS-X Server machines where this is a possibility.
(Sorry if this is a duplicate but most posts like this seem to concern locally created files and folders and not network shared folders.)

It can be done more easily with OS X Server, but you can do it anyway if you're familiar with the shell. See the section headed "ACL MANIPULATION OPTIONS" in the chmod(1) man page.

I Lost My Application Folder and I Can't Get It Back With It's Previous Features

I lost my application folder!! I have tried dragging it from my hard drive but all I have left over is my skype. when i was trying to change the size of my screen's window i accidently picked up the applications folder and when i let go of my mouse it disappeared and now I cant get it back with everything in it. (front row, screen grab, etc)

First of all don't empty the Trash.
Second, it is unlikely the folder is gone, you just dragged it someplace else. Here is one easy way to find it:
Go to Spotlight and type in the name of one of the programs that you had in that folder. Click on the program when it finds it. When the program launches, click and hold its icon in the Dock until you get the pop up menu. Choose "options > show in Finder".
That will open the enclosing folder and select the program. While you are there drag the folder back to where you want it.

MBP - lost Junk mail folder, how to get it back?

Not certain, but this can fix myriad Mail problems...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move this folder & file to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
Reboot.
If that doesn't do it and you can afford to redo all your Rules, try these & reboot...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist.backup
Note, in 10.5 & up /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/ does not exist.

What are the correct permissions for the Home folder?

Since buying my first mac (G4 iMac) I've since bought 2 other macs & transferred my home folder from the older computer each time. Since then I've messed around with the permissions of the Home folder a few times to try share files & folders between my Windows PCs. So the permissions of the Home folder on all computers could be messed up a little.
I want to set up permissions how they should be set up as default.
I created another user account with admin priveliges & it looks like the Home folder should be set up as follows:
Owner: 'my name'
Access: Read & Write
Group: admin or 'my name'
Access: Read only
Others: Read only
And the sub folders (Documents, Pictures etc.) should be set up as follows:
Owner: 'my name'
Access: Read & Write
Group: admin or 'my name'
Access: No access
Others: No accesss
Is this correct, & if so shall I just set permissions on my Home folder exactly the same as the new account I set up?
Or is there some way of resetting permissions for the Home folder?
(I know repairing permissions with Disk Utility doesn't do this).

Altered Permissions in users home folder

Help! I seem to have screwed up my friend's installation of 10.3.9 by messing up file/folder access privileges in her home folder. I was helping her to get some work done and now I have created a monster...
Briefly
Access permissions on her whole Home Folder (the Admin account) seem to all be set to another user's permissions (not Admin) and I haven't been able to reset them all recursively using Get Info. I have had partial success but some things refuse to run.
Before I run BatchMod on her whole home folder, is there anything I should beware of? I have seen similar but not identical problems here. More details below:
What Happened
In order to run some Leopard-only Apps on her TiBook G4 I booted from my external drive running 10.4.9 and all went smoothly until I needed to access files on her user account's Desktop (located at MacHD/Users/Her_Username/desktop) but didn't have permission. So I altered permissions for the desktop folder (and applied to underlying folders) with Get Info as the Admin running 10.4 from the Firewire drive...
So far, so good, but when it came to restoring her access permissions, I coudn't see her Account name on the dropdown menu as it is not a user on the system I was running via the Firewire drive. So I restarted from her hard drive and, so far as I am aware, restored the Ownership and Permissions for her desktop and all files on it back to her Username.
However...
After restarting, her whole Home folder (i.e. not just the desktop folder) seems to belong to the other user account on her Laptop even though it still sits in her User folder. Loads of Apps have problems or won't run at all because they cannot access caches, plists and other data in her Library.
Spookily, the trash is empty and stays that way - anything I trash vanishes for ever after a warning dialogue. Also, many apps think they are running for the first time, even though I have restored permissions within preferences. And Firefox refuses to run because it says there is another copy already running on the machine - which there isn't.
The good news is that the System folder and other users are unaffected, though it is a mystery how the permissions got changed in her whole home folder (right the way down) to the name of another user. I'm not normally that stupid - and if I can do it one way, why can't I redo it the other way? Could I have provoked the system into throwing a tantrum?
I have manually restored lots of things but have now decided on Batch Mod to save time (and sanity). I presume there will be invisible files that need changing to allow access to the trash and various registration data etc - can I do this with BatchMod and can I safely apply BatchMod to the whole Home Folder?

I shall do that as soon as I get the chance (after backing up what I can just to be safe).
FWIW I no longer think I am the responsible for all the changed access permissions because preferences (eg Dock), favourites and cookies seem to have been copied from the other user account too! For instance, the BBC homepage thinks she lives in a different part of England (as per the other User Account)!
This is weird; I suspect the software that apparently caused freezes and hangs - and some permissions error messages - under 10.3.9 (hence my booting from the firewire drive in 10.4) is actually responsible for messing things up.
Makes me feel kinda better but it's still me thats gotta sort it out...
